Q: Choose gcc and g++ version

NilsSo I have installed gcc-4.4 and gcc-4.3 (same for g++). Now as far as I remember there is a tool in Ubuntu which sets the symlinks for you if you just tell it which version you want. However it does not seem to work in the newest version, which I find disappointing. root@nexus:~# update-alternat...

9:59 AM
Hey, I got a question that I must be solved.
I got 2 files:
all_test.txt contain:
test1
test2
test3
....

yes...

completed_test.txt contain:
test1 Failed
test3 Passed
test5 Passed
....

why don't you ask a question on the site? More fun that way...

i want to combine lines but without dupplicate
i try to use
sort file1 file2 | uniq

none of the lines are the same so far in your sample...

10:02 AM
but it gives me duplicates lines like:
CtsVoiceSettingsTestCases
CtsVoiceSettingsTestCases Passed
CtsVrTestCases
CtsVrTestCases Passed
CtsWebkitTestCases
CtsWebkitTestCases Failed
yes ;/
i want to regards only to the column1
in the uniq

uniq is a bit stupid, but you can make it ignore the first n fields...
or only compare the first n characters

:D how please ?

I feel like you should ask a question on the site with some real samples. I'm a bit confused about what exactly you're dealing with and the desired output?

i don't like to post a new question for this ;/ but i will show u exactly the desired output
$ cat all_test.txt
test1
test2
test3
test4
test5

$ cat completed_tests.txt
test1 Failed
test2 Passed
test5 Passed

I need to make a new file with the result of
test1 Failed
test2 Passed
test3
test4
test5 Passed
so the new file contain all the test with the correct result Passed or Failed or Nothing yet

so this is what you don't want:
CtsVoiceSettingsTestCases
CtsVoiceSettingsTestCases Passed

10:13 AM
yes because is the same test

I get it :)

:D

(sorry I had to answer the door)
is there any text common to the first column?
does it always say test?

the real files are:
it's 152 test so is a bit span to post here,
but
CtsAadbHostTestCases
CtsAbiOverrideHostTestCases
CtsAccelerationTestCases
CtsAccessibilityServiceTestCases
CtsAccessibilityTestCases
CtsAccountManagerTestCases
CtsAdminTestCases
CtsAlarmClockTestCases
CtsAndroidAppTestCases
CtsAnimationTestCases
CtsAppSecurityHostTestCases
CtsAppTestCases
CtsAppUsageHostTestCases

just first few lines

10:16 AM
......
CtsVrTestCases
CtsWebkitTestCases
CtsWidgetTestCases
vm-tests-tf

I think you can do it only with sort...
hmm maybe not

sort gives duplicates lines like u ask me before :)
CtsVoiceSettingsTestCases
CtsVoiceSettingsTestCases Passed
....
You think I should post a new question for this ?

yeah!
@Benny use join
join -a 1 all_test.txt completed_test.txt
(works if they are both already sorted)
seems this is exactly what join is best at :)
going to dance around my living room for no reason

10:41 AM
hmm
have we pushed @Zanna over the edge?

@Benny Why not? Chat isn't for answering questions. If you ask here:
i) nobody else is helped, just you; if you ask on the main site everyone is helped.
ii) nobody is rewarded for helping you. Part of the fun of the site is the reputation system, here you are asking people to help you and you're not even willing to offer useless internet points.

this ^

iii) it is hard to answer you and much more work for us. You are asking for help, so you should be doing the work. If you ask a question, you will have to explain everything clearly in the question, show examples data etc. It is very annoying and tiring to have to ask you to provide everything bit by bit as Zanna was doing.

Q: Sort and Merge 2 files without duplicate lines according to the first column only

BennyI got a file with all the tests name: $ cat all_tests.txt test1 test2 test3 test4 test5 test6 And another file containing the test names and the associated result: $ cat completed_tests.txt test1 Passed test3 Failed test5 Passed test6 Passed How to create a new file containing all the test ...

@Benny You mention that you want to avoid duplicates but there are no duplicates in your example. Please edit your question and modify your example so it also has these possible duplicates. That way, we can test our solutions and make sure they do what you need.

@Benny You're not using what I posted: you switched the order of the files
You want what is in my answer:
     awk 'NR==FNR{a[$1]=$2; next}{ print $1,a[$1]} ' completed_tests.txt all_tests.txt
You used this instead:
    awk 'NR==FNR{a[$1]=$2; next}{ print $1,a[$1]} ' all_tests.txt completed_tests.txt
Which file is 1st and which file is 2nd is important here. Just copy/paste the command from my answer exactly.

hi everyone

hi @Zanna

how's it going?

@Zanna great,
really great,

awesome! that's wonderful to hear

12:04 PM
@Zanna it happens when you get your internet back :P

absolutely true

@Zanna I couldn't stand manjaro for another sec
it's not bad but adapta wasn't working on it

manjaro/arch is nice.

@Avery it's nice
it even felt faster, but i think i'm just a beginner

see there's your problem
you think
don't think

12:09 PM
my arch setup boots in 4 seconds and is much faster.

thinking is bad for your health
much better to blindly follow random U&L questions

that's what I do \o/

the old SO copypaste

i'll stop thinking
i still have manjaro installed, but i'm kinda setting up Ubuntu Gnome right now
I liked it, but it felt a little unfamiliar

Ubuntu is much easier to setup and maintain and it has decent support.
I keep installing random stuff (like openbsd arch etc) just to get them working.
I guess you could say that I'm a tech masochist.

12:19 PM
<-- thinks - for me GNOME aways was a bit clumsy... two clicks too many to get anywhere.
Hi all btw

12:39 PM
@Seth Good point! Thanks. The same goes for Ask Fedora. I changed the sentence:
There are also a StackExchange sites specifically for, elementary OS (beta) and Raspberry Pi and something akin for Debian and Fedora.

@Avery could you try installing adapta gtk theme for me, on Arch / manjaro, because I'm unable to do it from AUR!

12:54 PM
@muru: Your answer is a very nice way to tell OP to RTFM.

@DavidFoerster in the past couple of years, a surprising number of my answers just go "from the manual:..."

Man pages should be more intresting #LazyReader

They are... But they're picky about who they're interesting to. :P

@muru well said! :p

@SumeetDeshmukh currently kinda messing with something. Maybe later.

1:01 PM
Just paraphrasing that quote about Unix/Linux and friends :)

@Avery maybe I should read manuals for that too :p, instead of telling others to do my work

man pages mean nothing to me until I try to do something with the program

Which aur helper do you use?

"kinaesthetic learner" is maybe the nice way to put it XD

@Avery i don't know what you're saying (yet) but if you mean which GUI app to handle AUR, then the default one that comes with Manjaro

1:04 PM
Oh you use gui?
I do everything on cli

@Zanna kinaesthetic is maybe the hard way to put it!

Q: Grub2 Update to Show Opensuse + Ubuntu + Windows 8.1

Cristiano Xavier do Nascimentoeveryone. I've just signed up this forum. I've tried to triple boot windows 8.1, Opensuse and Lubuntu (they were installed in this order).But I wanted Lubuntu's entry in Opensuse's Grub. How do I do this?

@Avery askubuntu.com/users/665251/sumeet-deshmukh?tab= profile read the second point

Oh I see whats wrong

@Avery on the profile tab, I don't know why that wasn't picked up in the URL

Oh? Why is that?

It's on community now

@SumeetDeshmukh the hard way to spell it at least...

So just drop to shell and run sudo pacman -Sy adapta-gtk-theme

I used the normal repository that came with Manjaro too, non AUR (maybe I'm not terminologically correct)

1:07 PM
S is ok too but Sy updates repos first

@Avery I'll try that! Thanks for the help

<3 pacman

@Zanna I'm not good at spelling || if you remember the weather / whether mess i made

@SumeetDeshmukh that article seems...
most points are "not easy for new users"

@SumeetDeshmukh is English your L1 (first language)?

1:10 PM
@Zanna pacman is great

^

@Zanna no, it's marathi, (it's similar to Hindi)

@SumeetDeshmukh then, you are superb at spelling
English is an awful language to spell

@Avery exactly, but antergos and manjaro are pretty beginner friendly

And that article claims that scripting gui stuff is easier than cli
@Zanna ikr
English isn't my l1 either.

1:12 PM
@Avery if you're talking about that cli vs gui article then I have not read it :p
@Zanna glad to hear that

@SumeetDeshmukh yeah I am

English is my one and only L, so y'all are doing a hell of a lot better than me
(And I still can't spell it)
@SumeetDeshmukh do you write it in Devanagari?

@Zanna no i can't do that
My education is all in English

Ahh
me too

@Zanna that's kinda obvious, isn't it

1:18 PM
What DE does Manjaro come with? (assuming it comes with one)
@SumeetDeshmukh yeah I was just being silly

@Zanna it has choices, I installed gnome

oh... I'm wondering because I saw someone who uses Manjaro and the DE was really cool, but I didn't have a chance to ask what it was. Pretty sure it wasn't GNOME though

Kde probs

maybe... it had indicators similar to lxle

@Zanna Normal non-Ubuntu distributions aren't so tied to a DE. As far as I know, Ubuntu is the only mainstream distribution that has this bug feature.

1:24 PM
lol
why doesn't Ubuntu trust users not to be totally flummoxed (sp?) by a choice of DE?
is that even a word?

Two m, I think
Yep

thanks haha

And no idea. I certainly am flummoxed by how hard Ubuntu has made it to switch DEs.
Maybe just a marketing gimmic to make people think there are many different products instead of just one wearing different makeup.

"omg what is a desktop environment? I'm just gonna give up this installing Ubuntu madness and go back to Windows right now"
@terdon makes sense

@Zanna exactly, I felt safe while downloading ubuntu gnome iso to try it out, but I wasn't sure if i wanted gnome de on normal ubuntu

1:28 PM
@Zanna And that's fair enough, really. Ubuntu is aimed at novices and people who just want a working computer, not a hobby to tinker with. Nothing wrong with that.

sure :)
but seems they could make a user-friendly option in ubiquity or something

@terdon you need to leave kubuntu out of that argument, :p

@SumeetDeshmukh yeah I would be scared to try that too, since there are so many questions about how it broke everything!

@SumeetDeshmukh ?

"how do I fix my * after installing * DE?"

1:30 PM
@terdon you said ubuntu is something simple but i think kubuntu isn't, you should mostly ignore me, I make little sense
@Zanna exactly

@SumeetDeshmukh No, I said there is no real difference between the various Ubuntus. They're the same thing with a different face. In "normal" Linux distributions, the DE is just another package you can install. I've always had multiple ones installed on pretty much all systems I've ever used.

@SumeetDeshmukh haha I agree with you, I was "fighting the GUI" so much when I installed Plasma desktop

I just have never understood why Ubuntu makes it hard to do this.

really beautiful, but couldn't be bothered to spend ages trying to understand how the config for every little thing worked

I liked kubuntu initially, but thr are just too many options
And chance of breaking things is more!

1:36 PM
hahaha I like simple DEs. Fancy stuff is not for me

@Zanna yes that's why I use gnome! (lxde and xfce is too boring in my completely ignorant opinion)
judging from screenshots

I like Xfce, it's nicer than it looks at first glance imho. I mostly use MATE, which apparently makes me a hippy...

@Zanna I want to try out mate

well MATE is all about maintaining a traditional desktop metaphor while keeping pace with development under the hood - so it will probably be very much the same as it is now whenever you find the time to check it out :)

@Zanna I do have a lot of time until 16 july

1:53 PM
what's happening then?
that's the opposite of me. I'm going to be really busy from this weekend until about 16th July
Shog's dig at Ubuntu made me lol this morning

@Zanna game of thrones is happening, and i'm also getting a new job on 1 july, it's just training for a month though.

@Zanna what dig?

@Zanna same question! but i'll read the answer later, got to run (literally)

let me find it
@SumeetDeshmukh take care :)

Q: Lock Usb Flash-Drive on Ubuntu Linux

@Seth poof
wait wtf

3:26 PM
you're a frog
dangit you messed it up :P

they removed Remote Desktop from Home?

@TheWanderer wat

it's not here apparently

well, you probably shouldn't use their software anyway

AS on Linux is annoying
and thanks to MSI I have a proprietary audio thing on this so sound is terrible on Linux

3:38 PM
@TheWanderer I know of an OS
that's faster
more customizable

and doesn't support MS Office
or good sound

supports libreoffice natively
and msoffice through a magical fairy called wine
and actually sounds good, as an audiophile

have you actually tried installing MS Office?
Avery, my computer has this stupid proprietary audio mix so audio from Linux is way to loud on the mids
I've tried Pulse EQ but it does some stupid distortion things on the low frequencies

Hello everybody :)

oh yeah
mics are terrible

3:45 PM
not mics
sound

oh, mids

yes
it sounds horrible no matter what I do

@TheWanderer That sounds like an artefact of bad equaliser parameters. Of course it could just be a limitation of the EQ algorithm or the audio hardware/driver altoghether.

if I boost the lower frequencies even a tiny bit, there's some pretty bad distortion
sounds like I'm in a dubstep club
well I can do a ton of EQ in Windows just fine

Then you may need to set a negative pre-amplification value.

3:51 PM
how

Some EQ algorithms need you to set one.

Pulse EQ isn't exactly great

I'd have to look it up…

people have been complaining about this problem with it

Is the chat available via IRC or only on web?

3:51 PM
I know. You may be better off with manual parametrization of the PA module or an LADSPA module with a different EQ.

what

Also, I thought you want to boost the mid-range frequencies, not low-range.

@takatakatek Only on web, this isn't an IRC chat. IRC is a completely different beast.

no in a flat EQ the mid range is way too strong

@terdon thank you

3:53 PM
PulseAudio Equalizer is a front-end to configure a PulseAudio module. There may be more parameters than you can control with the front-end.

well I have no idea how

It may also be that the module uses a poor (or poorly implemented) EQ algorithm and it would be better to choose a different EQ module. I'm not aware of any other "native" EQ module for PA, but there's a PA module that lets you include arbitrary LADSPA filters, a generic standard interface for audio filters.

David I have no idea what you're saying

EQ = equalizer, PA = PulseAudio – if that's any help for starters.

3:58 PM
Do you have a general idea of PulseAudio's architecture, i. e. how it uses audio sinks and sink-inputs to route audio signals from their producer to some destination, possibly through filter modules etc.?
