4:04 PM
thomad how do i do a gdb backtrace of lets say VLC to backtrace a segfault when playing certain video formats?
never used gdb

i assume you were trying to ping me :p

no tneccesarily but yes i was asking you but delibratly not pinged

in theory, gdb vlc, then run within the gdb shell.
but that presumes that you have the code available and debugging symbols for it installed
otherwise it might not be the most useful.

4:16 PM
yeah no debugging symbols found
they asked me on the VLC ticket page to provde a backtrace
but the launchpad videolan team page fro daily master does not provide a -dbg package
all i know that i cant play mkv videos anymore since todays update
but well they build daily tho

@Videonauth yeah it should give you a backtrace
but I'm not sure how useful it'll be.

yep i just have no clue how to gdb vlc and then produce the bug?

@Videonauth Are you drunk?

@dessert lol ? no

4:34 PM
@Videonauth s/delibratly/deliberately/
@Videonauth s/no tneccessarily/not necessarily/

well i not spell checked this message

@Videonauth s/thomad/Thomas/

happens when i hop between chats and other pages
pff we got rid of them many years ago :p

s/i/I/g ;)

lol

4:36 PM
funny thing is, vlc does not crash when i run it through GDB lol

Try through GBL, I bet it crashes.

try through IAmEvilDebugger - it'll always crash :p

@terdon Dead Greeks: One for you?

Fabby !!!!
btw this is the best bug ticket I ever seen --> trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/35

4:56 PM
@Fabby :)

5:41 PM
wohoo again closing in on the 200 reputation :)

5:57 PM
I am trying to run sudo apt-get install libweston-3-0 but am getting an error that the package wasn't found. Yet I see it on here: packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=weston
How do I get this package?

what version are you using?
Oh i only see this"
sudo apt-cache search libweston
libweston-1-0 - reference implementation of a wayland compositor (shared libs)
libweston-1-dev - reference implementation of a wayland compositor (shared libs)
@user1770201 only in Bionic ... you aint using 18.04 it seems ;-)

So I have to build this package from source?
How do I see which version of Ubuntu I'm running?

well i would not run bionic yet on bare metal
@user1770201 lsb_release -a

I'm running 16.04

@user1770201 I would start with trying the DEB from bionic or from debian
if you REALLLLLLLLLLY need it

6:04 PM
yep thats when you do a packet search then xenial

I do need it

do it in a vbox install 1st
test it 1st before you install it in your OS

I know what I'm getting myself into :)
How can I install this on my OS?

@Rinzwind coughs packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/libweston-3-0 have you seen all the dependencies?
this surely will be an adventure

@Videonauth yeah I saw that >:-D
and debian is sid unstable

6:06 PM
not sure if this will work only by downloading the deb file

@user1770201 I soooo would not want to need it if I was you :-D

@user1770201 well you can start by downloading all the deb files, means the weston.deb file plus all its dependencies, plus their dependencies and then you start with dpkg -i weston.deb and see if it fails to install, if yes dpkg -r weston.deb and dpkg -i dependenciy.deb and rinse and repeat
But thats quite a change you do on your system and its quite unstable and may break everything

rinz and repeat :=)
@Videonauth I would install vbox, Ubuntu in it and then start messing around with that.

@user1770201 ^this

..... and since you can backup a vbox instance and just put it back to continue from where it all worked

6:18 PM
thats how I try to recreate the OPs bugs when trying to answer questions ;) no way I'm messing around with my actual installation.
just checked about half of the dependencies, on 17.10 you might be able to install it with gdebi
but that might be because 17.10 is actual not very different from 18.04 were only a few days after feature definition freeze
and alpha1 is still 29 days in the future

Q: There are active mods here?

John DoeI've requested my profile deletion a couple of months ago and I didn't receive any response from staff. I've tried through "other topic" and no response. Is there any reason to don't let me delete my profile here?

to be honest i rather would go and grab the upstream source and build it

@terdon ^^

@dessert EEEEKS your pointing at me :P

6:42 PM
@Videonauth one ^ is pointing on the last post, two ^^ on the next-to-last I'd say – or not?

^^ will always be an emoticon to me

@dessert Well you havn't seen me in real life, there you would need at least ^^^^^^^^ to point at something behind me
:P

@Videonauth lol!

@dessert Yes?

@terdon Wanted to point you to meta.askubuntu.com/questions/17505/there-are-active-mods-here/…, but now I answered it myself… have a look

6:51 PM
@dessert Mods are notified of all meta posts. There's no need to ping us in chat, thanks.
Don't really know what to tell that user anyway. It's an SE thing. We don't handle thee requests.

@terdon Wow, and you're a multimod – don't you drown in this flood of pings and messages?

@Videonauth Sorry, I was away visiting mum in the hospital...
CC @Terdon...

@dessert Why do you think I've often asked people not to ping me when they're just referring to me or just to say hi etc? :)
Yo Fabby!

@Fabby Hope she will be well soon :)

@Fabby Oh, wow. Serious?

6:53 PM
We don't know what's wrong, that's the problem...

Ouch.
My Dad went through something like that a few years ago. It's no fun.

... she's weak and cannot eat.

I'm sorry to read that - I hope they determine what's going on quickly

Yeah, well, I hope it's not dementia...
Anyway, I have to go back to work: meeting in 6 minutes. TTYL8R

take care fabby

6:56 PM
Hang in there!

Q: How can I create a custom conky bar for diskio in Linux?

GregStefI am using conky 1.10.3 (conky-all) in Ubuntu 16.10 (x86-64), kernel 4.8.0-59-generic, Cinnamon 3.0.7. How can I create a bar for diskio (actually, one for diskio_read and another for diskio_write)? Conky has diskio (which gives a number) and diskiograph - no bars. I tried, but could not find a...

@NathanOsman Beautiful! How long took the rendering? ;)

7:27 PM
@ThomasWard I asked if you'ld used or were familiar at all with an nginx+sanic/japronto+asyncpg stack

@NathanOsman nice, you should definetively look more into PBR materials for rendering

Nope.
That's the good news...

Wonderful example of "How to handle your question the worst possible way" --> askubuntu.com/q/983208/522934

They wanted us to keep the DR system alive until the 2nd of Jan.
Which is a no-go.

DR? digital rescue?

9:41 PM
Disaster Recovery.

lol that would be a big disaster if you need it so long ;)

Europe, Middle East, Africa.
We ave people from Dubai to Hamburg.

well talk bout that next weekend, i have no clue what i could apply for (in home office)

and from UK to 30 Km from the Czech republic.
All of the above. (except System Architect: he has to drive to customers)

@Fabby that would be a propblem since i have ni drivers license

Good night! I've had it for today!!!!

We also need DCOps, but they're in the UK only and they don't have Home Office jobs.

@TheWanderer woot ?
how ? its running very stable on my machine

I can't open ANY system monitors
my AVD just froze and I can't close it
ps freezes the terminal
top freezes the tetminal
killall freezes the terminal

[Ctrl][Alt][F1] kill -9

9:57 PM
Chrome freezes for about 2 minutes when I first open it
I can't reboot or shut down

A: How do I switch between console mode and GUI in 17.10?

VideonauthThe actual used tty consoles have changed around with the introduction of Wayland and 17.10. Now tty1 always contains the login screen, and tty2 contains your actual loaded session. So use Ctrl+Alt+F3 up to Ctrl+Alt+F7 for getting to an actual unused tty and use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go back to GUI. F...

2

And now my GUI is frozen
I can't even switch TTYs without everything freezing

9:59 PM
Wayland or Xorg?

Whatever kde uses

thats really weird i have for sure the oldest pc of all people in this room and on my machine it works flawlessly

by default they all use Wayland

however REISUB always works

So does holding down the power button

10:01 PM
that is hard wired behavior
yepp but holding down power is not the way to go if you use a journaled file system

@Videonauth Starred! I didn;t know!!!

py.checkio.org really is a great example of gamification, and a fun way to learn python :>

@Fabby that is at least for ubuntu-vanilla-gnome and ubuntu

/shrug
Good night! shuting down NOW!

10:23 PM
Back on my Ubuntu machine.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Hey, your askubuntu.com/q/739654/295286 script doesn't seem to work...
How do I debug it?
(running on 16.04)

what does not work on it?
does it simply have no effect or does it throw an error?

it doesn't save the brightness.
if I run it in a terminal,
it doesn't work neither...
Lemme turn on debugging first.
(why didn't I think of that???)
(too tired)

ah as a user it doesn't work.
Lemme try root
ah!
Lemme change ownership of the save file!

Q: System halts after Apache crash

krrishI have Apache web server running on AWS instance which is just serving static files. Few days back the web server stopped responding. I tried to SSH, but that also din't work. In kernel log I can see these lines Nov 29 13:10:38 ip-172-31-11-153 kernel: [2346146.571433] apache2[25729]: segfaul...

I feel like it's some sort of long-forgotten primal instinct to slow way down in narrow spaces
Seriously people, they're the worst place to slow down in crowded areas

>:-)
You're not a sheep, you're a wolf!

Thought you were sleeping

he is, its his superficial AI using his computer right now ;)

@TheWanderer Nah, I'm now on my private machine running Ubuntu...

@Fabby Hey, there. Looks like you got it resolved already, right?

10:43 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy how are you ?

@Videonauth I'm alright, but could use a bath. :)

Nope...
Doesn't seem to store stuff. now running it with bash -x
I've chmod ed the file so that everyone has RW access...
didn't make a difference
root@fab-ux-predator:/usr/local/bin
# bash -x keep-brightness restore
+ ARGV0=keep-brightness
+ ARGC=1
+ main restore
+ local DATAFILE=/usr/local/bin/.last_brightness
+ local SYSDIR=/sys/class/backlight
+ '[' 1 -ne 1 ']'
++ id -u
+ '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
+ '[' -f /usr/local/bin/.last_brightness ']'
+ '[' restore = restore ']'
+ restore /usr/local/bin/.last_brightness
+ MAX=11
+ LIMIT=1
+ VAL=5
+ '[' 5 -lt 1 ']'
+ echo 5

@Fabby alright. I'll debug it later tonight. Are you using lightdm btw ? Because it's meant to be used with that

I'm on Unity 16.04, so AFAIK, yes...

Ah, very well, same as what I use. OK, I'll figure out what's going on

10:49 PM
the only thing I did was copy it in /usr/local/bin instead of the local user's bin and it worked on my old machine...
# ls /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/
actual_brightness brightness max_brightness subsystem uevent
bl_power device power type
And I have nvidia driver...
/shrug.

Oop, found one bug

:D

if [ "$1" = restore ]
restore is a function
Should be using "$(restore)", I think

$ python -c "print(abs(-2.2-10.2))"
12.4
$ python3 -c "print(abs(-2.2-10.2))"
12.399999999999999
can anybody explain this weird behaviour?

Floating point error.

10:52 PM
rounding and no rounding and the usual float error

Means Python3 is more precise.
what he said ----^
Typical.
Always round when using floating point.

but round() doesn't help!
>>> print(round(abs(-2.2-10.2)))
12

print(round(abs(-2.2-10.2),1))
or decimal type...

913
Q: Limiting floats to two decimal points

kevinI want a to be rounded to 13.95. >>> a 13.949999999999999 >>> round(a, 2) 13.949999999999999 The round function does not work the way I expected.

10:57 PM
Djeez, python sounds like Microsoft basic!!!

nah its actually fine if you get the hang of it
those examples given in this answer are for python2 i guess

ok, thank you guys

@Fabby Except Python is still used and more readable
:p

print(f'{round(a,2)}')
^ @dessert for python 3.6
or down to one digit after the floating point

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy basic must still be used today.... Lemme get some stats...

11:01 PM
the only thing i cant yet so really get the hang of are the lidt etc initalizers

I'm sure it's still used somewhere. There's plenty of legacy systems around. Just poking fun
I had to take Visual Basic once as part of my engineering program. I know, go figure

Nov 2017 Nov 2016 Change Programming Language Ratings Change
1 1 Java 13.231% -5.52%
2 2 C 9.293% +0.09%
3 3 C++ 5.343% -0.07%
4 5 change Python 4.482% +0.91%
5 4 change C# 3.012% -0.65%
6 8 change JavaScript 2.972% +0.27%
7 6 change Visual Basic .NET 2.909% -0.26%

>>> data = [1 for x in range(8)]
>>> print(data)
[1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1]

Python only 1.5 percentage points more popular than BASIC!

i wonder where the rest of the 100 percent is in that ratings table :)

11:06 PM
COBOL, ADA, SMALLTALK, ...
Tons of languages out there taking very little

i wonder why c and c++ are not leading tho

but again with all that android crap java gets pushed

@Videonauth because they're specialized languages. C is now mostly used for OS and MCU stuff. Besides, it's easy to shoot yourself in the foot with those.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy so they are like linux ;)

11:09 PM
Well, Linux kernel is all C, so yes

There's a lot of assembly in there too.

Also assembly, yes
But I'll stay away from that. I had enough assembly in my MCU class
Maybe this winter break I'll go back to refresh my C knowledge. I am going to need it for next semester.

I'm outta here: in <8h alarm goes off!

G'night y'all! Unlike Fabby I actually am leaving. Enough python for one day. ,)

11:16 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy did you see that i rolled back this question? askubuntu.com/q/982302/522934

Oh
bad timing

happens :)

Sleep well, Fabby. Don't let the Vorlon bed bugs bite

Ah another douglas adams fan ;)

@Videonauth I saw that but deleted the comment only now. Thanks for the rollback

11:18 PM
i hope this answer stay like it is now

@Videonauth Fabby is. I'm not much of science fiction aficionado

Well it was my first Sci-fi book I have read in my life :)

To be fair, whoever is OP's teacher, they asked a kinda unreasonable thing to implement

yep, unless they actually teached all the knowledge before giving that assignment, but even then it is hard

11:23 PM
our chat is btw logged and observed by a bot
^ @NathanOsman
about one hour after i have out that file link up for you i got this in my logs:

whoever this company is, i dont like them
their bot dihonors robot rules

@Videonauth that's probably pun-scraper bot. It's a widely known fact this room is origin to the best puns on the internet

11:38 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy yep and it downloads all sorts of file, but well their webpage does not disclose for whom they scrape and its not following rules, so new server rule: if this ip shows up drop connection ;)

Probably a good idea

yep, they not even get a 403 served
well time for me to hit the pillow

Sleep well, buddy

8 am till neraly 1 am now on the site
