ehm
how do I chmod something to rwxrwsr-x
7x5
how the s? :P

2775
4775 would be rwsrwxr-x
1775 would be rwxrwxr-s

@Rinzwind lol heroic effort

I put that in your comment @Rinzwind

found it
g+s :)

That works too

9:09 PM
@Rinzwind but you listed only the directories right, and these directories may have inner directories and files. do I need to go to each file one by one, there may be thousands of files. — Indu Pillai 12 secs ago
lol that's right OP

^Agreed!

@edwinksl the whole of /usr/local is EMPTY dirs

Mine shows 4839 files in my /usr/local folder
terrance@terrance-Linux:/usr/local$ find . -type f | wc -l
4839

i think some user installed programs go to /usr/local right?
my /usr/local has a lot of stuff

750 folders

9:16 PM
$ find . -type f | wc -l
531309
:p

LOL, You win @edwinksl
=)

sorry
wtf did you do to /usr/local?

so yeah, chmod -R 777 would have destroyed me

Indeed

/usr/local$ pwd
/usr/local
rinzwind@schijfwereld:/usr/local$ find . -mindepth 1 -type d | wc -l
29

9:16 PM
-R is what kills!

:P

clean system :P

always >:)

195 dirs and 620 files for me.

mine is so dirty

9:17 PM
Mine is getting there. Need to see what apps I can remove. ;)

Struggling with my Android VM.
Can't get my USB webcam to work in the guest.
Anybody having experience in that area?

Not I. :(

(Qemu/KVM and Android_x86)

I need to set something up like that. =) Sounds fun to mess around with.

I need to submit a bug to the maintainer of 'overlayroot'. How do find out where the maintainers page or bug page is for that Ubuntu software?

9:20 PM
should I remove my answer :P
I can never help him fix his own files in /usr/local :D

OP would be better off reinstalling right now. They can try to run it the way it is, but apps might start complaining about permissions when they run them.

(From apt show overlayroot, "homepage")

Cool. thanks. How did you find that?

@Rinzwind that was a heroic effort nonetheless

almost done

9:27 PM
/tip toes through AU room

@edwinksl O_O

@Zanna jk, we wouldn't stop upvoting

done :D
yay accepted \o/
what a lot of work for 15 rep :P

not worth :p

@edwinksl :D
Off to sleep, long journey to friend's wedding tomorrow, later all xxx

9:38 PM

weekend so no sleep for me :=)

Anybody an idea?

Q: Lock screen after period of inactivity, but not on closing the lid

Byte CommanderRunning Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity, I want that when I leave my laptop untouched for 5 minutes, turn the screen off 1 minute after turning the screen off for inactivity, lock the screen. when I close the laptop lid, do NOT immediately lock the screen, but act like if the lid was still open and loc...

@ByteCommander what is the host computer?

@TheXed Always Ubuntu, of course.

and the client?

Android x86

9:42 PM
@ByteCommander so basically you want to have delayed locking for lid closing ?

Android x86 5.1.1 to be exact
@Serg Yes, one could also describe it that way.

@ByteCommander no sorry can't help.

np, thanks for attempting to try :)

OK, will see what I can do

9:56 PM
@ByteCommander Do you have /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/ folder ?

@Serg Yup, containing one file.
$ cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
state:      open

Perfect

I thought all the answers to the question "How do I start nautilus as root" were obsolete. So I added a new answer. Check out my new answer: askubuntu.com/questions/156998/how-do-i-start-nautilus-as-root/…

@user68186 nice answer! =)

Thanks @Terrance

10:11 PM
It works well. =)

@Rinzwind nice answer to the chmod question.

OK.... whew! Now I can see again. Computer glasses are back on. =)

:) @Terrance I can't see without my computer glasses :(

My normal glasses are OK for everyday stuff, but the new computer glasses my dr gave me are awesome! Screens loook sooo clear! =D

Cool! Next time I see my eye dr I will ask for those. :D

10:18 PM
What are you asking for?

They are soooo worth it! =D

what is?

Computer glasses
Mine have the blue blockers in them, but they are not yellow like the other pairs you see out there.

@Terrance oh yeah...I have a eye doctors apt. I am asking for a pair of those if I have to get upgrades for my eyes..

They really do wonders for my eyes. Just don't drive with them. :P

10:23 PM
Yeah my sister in law has them, she says they are amazing...

Since I am far sighted in one eye and near sighted in the other, I have quite the prescription. But the computer lenses are not bi-focals and are made for optimal viewing distance of about 2 1/2 feet. Sooo worth it! :)

I wanted to get some of those yellow computer glasses for a while now.

@user68186 thanks :)

Those yellow ones help a TON!
My friend has a pair of these Gunnars: gunnars.com/how-they-work

@Rinzwind you went the extra mile to write out all the chmod commands one by one. You are welcome.

10:27 PM
:D

good evening!

Good evening @IanC

yo @IanC

@IanC Good evening!

how are you guys doing tonight?

10:31 PM
@Terrance I have -10.25 in my left eye :P
@IanC tired.

@Rinzwind WOW!

@Terrance what does world of warcraft have to do with that? >:-D

LOL

lol

@Rinzwind me too, just got back from another double shift, at least next months salary is probably going to be better :)
any Java coder knows some good free book or tutorials for raw beginners? (a friend of mine is learning it)

10:32 PM
Hey, they make gaming glasses! =D gunnar.com/product-category/gaming-eyewear

Just submitted the order for my new computer :-D

Cool @TheXed

@TheXed alienware next-gen octa core?

@IanC no....

what specs?

10:33 PM
Custom built I7-7700
32gbs of ram
512gb m.2 ssd
gtx 1050 ti

building it for gaming?

and asus prime z270m-plus

that's a lot of RAM :p

@IanC it will be use for VM's

10:35 PM
I could use some more RAM here though, 4GB and I get my system trashing often when manipulating huge files

it should be screaming!

I need to add sysctl -w vm.swappiness=20 on my boot scripts

@IanC I currently have 8gbs

but was too lazy so far to do that

oh and I came in under my budget ;-D

10:37 PM
I need Gunnar glasses with these lenses in them: enchroma.com/cx-lens-guide

@TheXed For VMs 32gb will be great, are you using them for servers?

@TheXed Very nice!

I can't really expect much RAM from a notebook, if I was building a desktop I could aim a bit higher

@IanC don't know yet...

I got a new machine last summer with 32GB RAM. I thought I will never need to swap again. Then I needed to add 20+ GB swap for some data crunching.

10:38 PM
I just threw in the extra ram because I could afford it...
had to spend it on something to get it closer to my budget...

you never know when you will need the extra RAM.

you mind me asking what your budget was? @TheXed

$8.4k...
Just joking. $850.00

daaaamn
oh, 850 is not that much for those specs, but I don't think I could build the same desktop here in my country with that money
850 is around 2400 Reais maybe, not sure how much is the dollar at the moment

@IanC I got a lot of "good customer" discounts...

10:42 PM
notebooks and computers parts are also way cheaper on the states
just for comparison, I'll look how much is a I7-7700 here

paying at cost prices, and 50% off on the SSD...
CPU is 315 on newegg. I am paying 298

R$1640 which is around $509
it's almost $200 higher than the price you got there without discount
I didn't research much though, maybe I could find it a bit cheaper

ssd is 178.92...paying 89.37 for it.

SSDs are worth it. I paid roughly $40 a piece for my 2x240GB SSDs

things are overpriced around here, and I didn't even get started on cars..

10:46 PM
do NOT skim out on SSD. Make sure it has a very good read/write speed.

we manufacture a car here, and people buy it cheaper on a neighbor country (Argentina) than we can buy it here

can't find a retail price for the GPU...

Also, make sure that your Mobo is SATA 3 as well as the SSDs

@Terrance m.2

Mine are SATA 2 since my board is older, but they perform OK:
/dev/sde:
Timing cached reads: 7358 MB in 2.00 seconds = 3686.96 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 410 MB in 3.01 seconds = 136.44 MB/sec

10:50 PM
:OOOOO

@Terrance
M.2 (pronounced M dot two), formerly known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors. It replaces the mSATA standard, which uses the PCI Express Mini Card physical card layout and connectors. M.2's more flexible physical specification allows different module widths and lengths, and, paired with the availability of more advanced interfacing features, makes the M.2 more suitable than mSATA for solid-state storage applications in general and particularly for the use in small devices such as ultrabooks or...
@Terrance theoretically 32gbs/sec

Cool!

HD should not be a bottle neck...

But the wallet will be

As cool as it all is, my system still does exactly what I need and no need to improve on it right now. =)

10:54 PM
@Terrance well yeah...that too...but one of my sata ports died, and two of my USB ports died...
and it doesn't play the games I want to play anymore.

@TheXed That is a good enough reason to do it. =)

Ugh, do they not make 2.5" 1TB SSDs?
I can only find SSHD

So top is 960GB?

@Zacharee1 that sounds about right

10:57 PM
It's $245 on Amazon o_O

@Zacharee1 that actually isn't a bad price...

@Terrance, I wrote that function we were discussing about yesterday, want it for your .vimrc?

@TheXed it's $400 on bestbuy was my point

Oh...

10:58 PM
@Terrance well it is pcie and nvme

@IanC Sure.
@Zacharee1 When I show that, it is to only show the product, and not the prices

@Terrance I don't think it'd fit in my laptop :p

" The function below is supposed to be a way to paste code without messing up the indentation.
" It will first set the paste option (to disable automatic indenting), start a 1 second timer
" (probably enough for the pasting process) that will disable the paste option and finally put
" the clipboard buffer after the cursor position. It will only be enabled if the vim version
" being used was compiled with +clipboard feature.
if has('clipboard') == 1
        function PreparePaste()
                set paste
@Terrance
@Serg (if you find that useful too!)

@IanC Thank you!!! :D

you're welcome :)
I mapped it to vv, you just type two v's on insert mode and it will paste
but without recalculating indentation

11:00 PM
@Zacharee1 What won't fit in your laptop?
@IanC Good choice for the mapping.

ACK

@Terrance that pcie ssd

@Zacharee1 why wouldn't a 2.5" HD fit in your laptop?

@Serg KCA

SYN seq=1337 @Serg

11:01 PM
@TheXed the pcie SSD, not the sata

@Zacharee1 That PCIe is for a desktop

OH!

@Zacharee1 KEK

QAP
is Q code used there in the states?

QR code ? Yeah, somewhat

11:03 PM
@Zacharee1 I guess it might fit a laptop if it was designed for it.

I can use it at work to call in support tickets for my copiers but I never do...
I rather call the service center and talk to a human

OK, I didn't think I was that color blind. :( enchroma.com/test/result/total-deutan/…

> I have to shout down the pc
also one more CV needed because Mint

Done! :)

11:21 PM
Everybody knows, the louder you shout at your PC, the faster it shuts down

@Serg and the harder you kick it the faster it performs.

Is a reformat necessary to change inode size?
The Ubuntu that I'm on atm currently has 256 for it's inode size and GRUB only seems to work with 128

man, I wish I was not so tired so I could code a bit
but I'll have to crash
good night folks!

@HarrisR considered reinstalling grub ? I don't quite see the potential issue you're having, but it's possible to change inode size without reformatting (by which I assume you mean changing filesystem type ) unix.stackexchange.com/q/174334/85039

@Serg

11:26 PM
@Serg did you see my build up there?

Thanks for the response, I'm a new Ubuntu user so I may not be as knowledgable as I need to yet

@TheXed Yeah, I saw the specs. Sounds pretty smexy :D Also, good price on SSD

Yup.

@IanC Have a good one! =)

I was like "cool"

11:27 PM
When I run sudo grub-install /dev/sda3, I'm getting

"sudo grub-install /dev/sda3
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly."
I looked into it and supposedly it has to do with inode size
since I know that the file is there

Thanks @Terrance, you too! :)

file /boot/grub/stage1
/boot/grub/stage1: DOS/MBR boot sector; GRand Unified Bootloader, stage1 version 0x3

@HarrisR somehow I doubt it has to do with inode. I have inode size of 256, but has been running Ubuntu on this SSD perfectly fine for more than a year

I don't know what else it could be. I'm a new user and following the errors let me to believe that GRUB has an issue with anything above 128. :/ What should I check

I don't think you can install grub to a partition. I thought it was only supposed to be installed to the drive itself?

11:37 PM
It's possible, although I've never done so myself
@HarrisR Post a question on the main site. I don't have a definitive solution/suggestion, only couple guesses.

I installed ubuntu yesterday.
My grub and installations had some hd0 read errors (that were a bit sporadic) even after I set root, prefix, and insmod. Sometimes it even led to a kernal panic. I was going to use a boot repair live cd but today when I booted it up GRUB and ubuntu worked fine.

I've never done it either. I know the libraries go to the installation of Linux, but I am not sure if you can put the bootloader in a partition.

I was just updating grub and making sure to run the install again as suggested by a previous answer
when I came across the grub error

@HarrisR I would check smart and see if your hard drive is failing...
also bad ram can cause seemingly random HD errors...

That too ^

11:41 PM
It's an isolated issue though. Since I've had this PC for 2+ years and never once had issues with the hdd or ram. I booted up windows earlier and nothing was out of the norm

@HarrisR doesn't mean it cant start today

How would I check that though?
If it only occurs when using Ubuntu & Grub

memtest...and you can run a disk check on your disc...
I think WD makes a utility you can use...

Sorry if any of my questions seem beyond stupid

@HarrisR that is what we are here for, to make you feel stupid :-P

11:46 PM
the WD utility is only windows based. I'll boot that up, but I'm worried that I won't be able to boot back up to Ubuntu again, especially with the issues i had last night

@HarrisR I guess we will find out eh?

I guess so, I'll be back eventually
Thanks for the help

11:59 PM
Here we are. 2017. Ubuntu 16.04 has been out for 9 months. Do we have support for Southern Island cards in the amdgpu driver yet?
Because my patience is starting to wear.
