if you do lscpu | grep -i model do you get the model of your processor? I'm just checking it's not different for everyone

$ lscpu | grep -i model
Model:                 42
Model name:            Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz
42!

hehehe thanks :)

seen a couple of vaguely similar ones the last few days I think?

hmm i don't recall seeing them. the ones related to hwe upgrades that i saw are people getting notifications asking them to upgrade and they were wondering if they should :P

8:20 AM
Welp, at least i got an upvote , so my stupidity wasn't entirely pointless

OP: "$ grep -i shut /var/syslog turns up nothing." <--- funny that

where is this
ah found it
i was going to say the same thing you did

I don't think it will help them tbh though...

the last time i had my machine freeze and then shut itself down was in windows

ditto, Linux has never done that to me

Q: How to show a difference between the usage of '*' , '+' and '?' in grep?

luforkI understand that '*' : The preceding item will be matched zero or more times. '?' : The preceding item is optional and will be matched, at most, once. '+' : The preceding item will be matched one or more items Can anyone give me an example of when there would be a difference while using grep?...

this guy
i can't tell if he is stooped or what
i posted examples on his previous question a few hours ago

or she sigh

ok, they. . . .

yes that is really a silly question... should we close it?

Oh hey, go team @Zanna!

@edwinksl you helped a lot i think
@KazWolfe it seems your question is reopened :D
@Zanna That's too fast! congrats!

Lol I was on the tube while that happened! Thank you @edwinksl @terdon @Rinzwind @Anwar for all the support <3 <3 <3 <3
You guys are the best :..)

Yay 10k \o/

Omg haha

Hi all :)

hi tux

hello :D
Whats up ?

Just chilling out.

@SeverusTux Hi! :)

:D :D

11:34 AM
@Zanna thanks :) Also, I see you've passed 10k , congrats !
That youtube channel is basically webcams form around Jackson Hole resort

@Zanna Congratulations to 10k. I needed over a year for that :)

Thanks! Couldn't have done it without you of course & that goes for everyone here

However, the next 10k were faster although I had to earn half of them twice.

Also , at the same time with that question , I've cleared the 30k mark \ o/
I think i can now rest in peace . . . and not in that way . . .

Congratulations @Serg - wow!

11:37 AM
@Zanna Congratulations :D

@Zanna @Serg Congrats! :)

Thanks @SeverusTux @HenryWHHackv2.0 :)

@ByteCommander heh , we're pretty much pro's by now - regaining 10k twice (also command-line tag badge, my babyyyyyy)

Oh man, I'm slow on the spam at the moment.

You and me both

You can get the bot to ping you if a spam is reported on a specific site. (It does not work in this room)

Wow! I got a nice info page for debating with my Windows loving friends : awesome-unexpected-things-powered-linux

@Serg only 6.6k twice for me and only silver tag badge... :-/
@HenryWHHackv2.0 It does.
I had it set up once, but it got too annoying as the majority of spam arrives while I'm still asleep and then only lands uselessly in my inbox.
@Serg I found a cake for you!

I hope that cake is not from GladOS

O_o

I GIMPed it a bit to add the "k" :)

Q: Should this CW post be renamed?

luchonachoI have encountered several questions that ask for "desktop recording tools". The most recent is here. There is already a CW answer, here, but it comes under the name of "screencast", which personally, as a non-native English speaker - and having lived in the UK for 5 years - is an unknown word to...

@SeverusTux they should have just said, pretty much any media streaming box or router!

#IApproveThisMessage @ByteCommander

11:49 AM
@Serg So that you don't have to run after the girls that much...
The original cake is from cdn.cakecentral.com/4/45/45c3dd4b_gallery32441320555278.jpeg btw, just for completeness sake.
I just found that the most funny 30 years cake ;D

@ByteCommander oh, i don't really run after girls that much. I'm a "in-relatioship" guy now, and don't chase tails anymore. Although , I still will stare at a pretty girl if i see one , because habits :) Also because nothing wrong with admiring physical beauty

You think this one will last longer than the previous ones?

Ouch!

Oh, definitely. She's a law major, and will sue me if I leave XD ( That's a joke, by the way)

@Arronical This was a neutral question, not implying any expectations.

11:54 AM
Isn't is sad that on the internet we need to add (that's a joke) part ?

shrug

@ByteCommander sorry, I missed the nuance of your friendship, without that it seems brutally direct!

@ByteCommander seriously speaking, my ex would have lasted much longer too. It was me who broke up. Still feel bad about it

There's a German saying "Liebe vergeht, Hektar besteht" (love vanishes, hectare stays) - make sure you marry someone you can get profit out, even if you won't love them any more after a while... However, nowadays it seems the other way round - if they stop liking you, they take everything.

That's where I've gone wrong, I've definitely not made any profit from past relationships!

Q: How to make a window pointer phobic?

Hemant YadavI mean the window should move around whenever I try to move the pointer on it. I have a "Analog Clock screenlet" and "file progress dialog box" which I tweaked to stay "Always on Top" of other windows with CCSM but sometimes they come in the way of doing things. If that's not possible than may be...

@Serg Something for you ^

and i just wanted to get some sleep

They need a compiz-wizard

I'll look into it later, if Jacob haven't tackled it by then

@Serg Is Jacob still here btw?
I mean, he reset his name and icon, is he still active or did he quit?
Haven't seen him around for a while now.

@ByteCommander he is still quite active. For whatever reason he keeps his username generic . On other sites, he's still "Jacob Vlijm" but not here

12:05 PM
How stooped...

I have a few thoughts on that, but probably i am wrong
anyway . . .need sleep

ARGV!
This frigging touchpad!
It thinks every little piece of dust or fingerprint is a finger.

typical touchpad
anyway
bye guys

good night

Hmm one of our hackers (I mean who have same device as me) thinks some current kernel development might be the starting point for getting support for our audio card... exciting :)

12:14 PM
What device do you have?

Does anybody happen to know how get modprobe to work with xz-compressed kernel modules in Trusty? I already backported the kmod package from Xenial and enabled the --with-xz option.

Q: Stop touchpad from treating dust or fingerprints as finger

Byte CommanderSeems like my touchpad is a bit oversensitive, every piece of dust or barely visible old fingerprint stains sometimes get treated as additional finger, which means it becomes unusable until I disabled, scrubbed and enabled it again. Lately this happens multiple times a day and is very annoying. ...

It just happened again.
I can't even see any stain on the touchpad.

modinfo accepts compressed modules specified by absolute path, but it can't find them just by name (even though there's a .ko.xz file in the right location).

I want to move the pointer and it starts scrolling because it thinks there's another ghost finger on it...

Voila! Got selected for internships.. Yay : )

Do you have a lot of hardware issues?

12:46 PM
Yup, although a lot of issues get automagickally fixed by a script I run on the iso before I write it to usb, saves a lot of faff. Still no audio drivers though, Realtek never released the spec afaik so v difficult to write

Q: Make Recording a synonym of record

Mark KirbyWe have two tags, one called recording and one called record, I propose recording become a synonym of record. Recording has a few question but no description or anything, while record is more fleshed out, I don't see a need for both these tags.

@ByteCommander I liked the pop references.

I like the "Yo, Lucy!" :D

damn... got home and on my laptop for 10 minutes & now instead of the little orange box with ~1 or ~3 or at most ~10 suggested edits in need of review, now I have the number 309!! No doubt I have to do something new o.0
Ah it's just ALL the things to review...

@reversiblean That's what the CC ("carbon copy") and BCC ("blind carbon copy") fields in email clients are for.

@Zanna Does the script modify the iso? Or do you insert a script into the iso? I'm trying to figure out a simple solution for this askubuntu.com/questions/822872/… and modifying the iso is one method. It just sounds scary!

the script modifies the iso

Ah pants. I'm going to have to think for myself aren't I?

1:17 PM
@Arronical have you tried booting into the live session and simply changing /etc/apt/sources.list to point to your local repo? I assume the installation process just reads the sources.list file anyway. That way you don't actually need to modify the ISO in any way.

I should probably have specified that it's a server installation so no live session option.

@Arronical Ah. Yes, you should have.

Editing...

I haven't run one of those in a while. Can't you get to a shell before starting the installation process? How about starting it but at the first prompt (language choice, I think) change to a different tty (Ctrl+Alt+F2) edit /etc/apt/sources.list and then continue the installation?
Not sure if you'll have multiple ttys at that point though.

@terdon it's definitely worth a try, thanks!

1:21 PM
Good luck!

@Anwar why wouldn't you want to close a specific question as a dupe of a general one if the general one also answers the specific question?

because general one can't include all answers.
though sometimes they might include some ...
for example, we have a canonical question on Unity customization and we aren't closing every unity configuration question as a dupe to it.

@Rinzwind - Why did you delete your answer? askubuntu.com/questions/822925/…

and as far as I understand the SE model, it wants specific question. those are always preferred than generic one.

@AndroidDev cuz it did not work :=)
why? you wanted to downvote?

@AndroidDev there was someone who gave you 0 points because you made them do more work than they would have wanted. Also, they asked a Windows question.
@Rinzwind missed it

Mohit VellankiI created a bridge using the following guide on my Ubuntu 14.04 server. http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Networking#Public_Bridge Now I would like to assign a static public IP to my virtual machine. How do I do it?

A: How to install Virtualbox from command line?

Warren HillOpen a terminal and execute: sudo apt-get install virtualbox which should work. Once you have installed it you probably want to install guest additions in the guest OS. Also you probably want the extension pack which you can get from here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads Make s...

It was a simple change that showed that you could simply run apt install to install the proprietary addon

@kush It adds something completely different. This should have been posted as comment, I think.

@kush I didn't see the edit, but I'm guessing it was around the virtualbox-ext-pack package. That only exists in Ubuntu version after 15.10, so not applicable to all versions.

@kush It's tricky to update another person's answer, maybe write your own answer that has the main installation from repo instructions, and the extension pack from repo, explaining that it only works on version after 15.10.

3:54 PM
^^

@kush yes, and your edit was good as far as I can tell. The only problem I can see is that you didn't make it very clear that you were only giving a command to install the extension pack and not one that installs virtualbox itself.
This is what the reviewers saw:

I'm not sure that I'd have rejected the edit myself @kush but I'm not 100% knowledgeable on the ins and outs of edits. I'd certainly upvote a complete current answer.

As you can see, that's just the title and your edit. They couldn't have seen that just above your edit, the OP was discussing how to install the extension pack. That could have made the reviewers think your edit wasn't helpful.

@terdon I thought it was clear from the context

@kush It is, but I only saw the context when I looked at the original answer. I couldn't see it when checking what reviewers saw in the queue.

3:57 PM
I thought it would be one fewer thing for someone to have to check because I think when you use apt you don't have to worry about getting the correct version of the extension

@Anwar Because it doesn't answer all questions, as you said. So if I ask a question about a customization not mentioned there, it shouldn't be closed. If, however, I ask one whose answer is there on the dupe, why not close it?

I guess the meta on ask ubuntu is different. Why would I want to write another answer? Shouldn't there be one Canonical (heh) answer?

@Rinzwind Would you expect that to work? I thought of suggesting it but couldn't think of any reason why it would make a difference. What am I missing?
@kush No, you most certainly shouldn't write another answer just to add a different way of getting the extension pack.

Oh well, I thought it would help some poor soul from juggling around having 1. to find out the version number of virtualbox they installed 2. going to the website to find the correct extension 3. downloading it ... and so on but oh well

@kush And you're quite right. As I said before, your edit seemed perfectly good to me. I was just explaining why the people who reviewed it might have thought it wasn't helpful.

4:01 PM
@kush It's definitely information that ought to be in there somewhere.

@terdon yeah maybe someone else will do a better job (:

@kush Are you Israeli, by any chance?
Just wondering about the (:

@Arronical I am actually quite relieved to know that ask ubuntu is a mess as well. I used to think that the Wiki was an exception

Is your native language written right to left?

@terdon no sir (: why do you ask?
would love to visit though

4:04 PM
@kush Because of the smiley :) I had to look at it twice to figure out that it was a happy, and not sad face. So I thought your native tongue might be one that's written right to left, so that smiley looks more natural to you.
I probably read too much into it :)

ah, maybe it was influenced from my friends in Florida (who I never met in person and only talked over chat and irc)
never thought about it being from a rtl language

@kush Any site with contributions from a wide user base will have stylistic differences and areas which need to be cleaned up, that's one of the jobs of the review queues. You could probably redo your edit, and make it clear that it's just to install the extpack, and it'll be approved.
Do it... Do it!

Ok I will

Can sudo apt-get purge -y --force-yes grub* shim-signed linux-signed* do anything useful at all?
Seems like a prank command to me askubuntu.com/q/822956/367990

@ByteCommander I guess it's one way to do it. Presumably, you'd first run that to remove grub and then reinstall grub. That's what the OP from the question (the original one mentioned in the one you pasted) is doing.
Dunno what the *signed stuff would be though.

4:11 PM
@Arronical we will see whether the review gods will like it
Oh, it went through

@terdon but the reinstall is missing, isn't it?

oh you did that @terdon thank you!

Interview Worth watching --> youtube.com/watch?v=NtHmKLHtZvg

@terdon No offense intended for our friend the OP, but this just keeps growing. Can we do something about it? askubuntu.com/questions/822800/…

@chaskes Oh crud. I hadn't seen that. Now I understand a meta.se post I was reading.
Don't see much I could do. There is a question buried in there (although I had to read it three times to understand what it is since the last sentence contradicts the rest). I can protect it, but none of the answers posted were from new users. I can close it, but the main question (how can I quickly destroy my system) is actually on topic. . .

Can we at least remove the theoretical meta tag?

that question and its answers hurt to read
