Yes, proper case.

Trying to install amdgpu driver.

Boo!

bug

arch linux failure!

At least I'm four kernel releases ahead of you all right now :P

3:26 AM
moo
oh? i have kernel 4.8 now too

Does kernel 4.8 make that much difference over 4.4?

it comes with predictive intelligence. it runs commands before you type them

:D

@KazWolfe It hasn't been released yet. You've been tricked!
Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha >:)

of course not.
that's why I got the Release Candidate
infact @NathanOsman, what RC are you running?

3:33 AM
I am going to try the RC3 version of them.

bleeding edge or no edge m8

Sounds good to me! =)

RC5 is out now

OK, downloading RC5

lol

3:36 AM
wait no not bleeding edge enough
download the latest source from the latest development branch

does torvalds just throw everything into the master branch?

3:38 AM
Downloading now . . . . . . .

woah. the kernel has infinite contributors
so... how does torvalds do any work on only one branch?

Darn! Errors with the module. =(
vboxhost

github.com/torvalds/linux heh, infinite number of contributors

Hello
Could someone help here?

with?

3:43 AM
I run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and its taking time to install applications after download.
30 minutes has already passed and that image in terminal is not yet changing.

huh, that's a problem i haven't seen before

and i will soon be a member of the Linux Foundation! yay!
3

@edwinksl Can you help me?

@KazWolfe wow! (suprised they allow uefi fans) HAHA

They allow anyone who throws money at them.
Or are a student.

3:47 AM
@Ralf17 no, i hesitate to recommend anything because i don't want to break your system :P

Yeah, you're in a weird place right now.
Just wait a bit longer...

@edwinksl ...so I really have to wait until it stops?

WOAH WTF. Linux Foundation members get employee pricing at Lenovo/Dell/etc?!
I can get all the pro-grade hardware that comes with all the benefits of proper UEFI!

I read some posts here and there online, they recommend to delete some stuffs but do so with caution.

wb @ByteCommander. Do you ever sleep?

3:51 AM
@KazWolfe nice i just submitted application

@KazWolfe I tried to, honestly.
But then I got haunted by a nasty mosquito...
Not sure if I managed to swat it yet.

also god damn tech certs are expensive

I did follow on of them i.e. if ps -e | grep -e apt -e adept | grep -v grep prints nothing

if you want to risk it ralf, there may be a way

Interesting...
So the headers are incorrect...

3:54 AM
@NathanOsman How so?

The 4.7 headers are in /include but I am running a 4.8rc5 kernel.
So modules that depend on 4.8 features won't build.

Hmmm

Reinstalling...

Mine are 4.8. Interesting that you got 4.7

so i'd need to take A+, Server+, Network+, Security+, Linux Sysadmin, and maybe Linux Engineer
god, that's easily over $1k

3:58 AM
Well, I'll try to get some more hours... night o/

it's gonna be day soon lol

@ByteCommander Goodnight!

@KazWolfe Do I look as if I would care about that? ;)

has anyone in this chat taken the LFCS/LFCE?

@KazWolfe Then sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

4:02 AM
I'd say Ctrl-C out of the process, clean apt, and dpkg-reconfigure.

and sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
@KazWolfe Would that ruin my system?

potentially.

I mean your suggestion

welcome to apt.

lol

4:04 AM
What does your syslog say?
Anything about why snapd would fail to start/stop?

I actually have done the steps that I was describing a while ago because s -e | grep -e apt -e adept | grep -v grep
and then I tried installing sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client

you're not looking for adept though, you're looking for snapd iteslf.
basically apt is waiting on the process that handles setting up snapd to finish doing something

after deleted /var/cache/apt/archives/lock and sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

It is obviously not finishing anything, and this is typically stopping and starting services.
Also that is how to break things.
those locks are there for a reason

When I typed in sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client the terminal throws E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
Did I broke my system our something by following that the thread is : askubuntu.com/questions/15433/…
It is the answer of karthick87.

4:09 AM
Run that command
sudo dpkg --configure -a

I did and I am now back to the never ending setting up of snapd

oh...

That was the earlier story now I said everything on what I did let's go back to the present and discuss if my system is already broken, how would I know?

Q: apt-get stuck on 'Setting up blueman'

ChrisI installed xubuntu-desktop to give XFCE a try, and during that process it got stuck installing a few packages. It got stuck on setting up blueman, hddtemp, or lm-sensors. I eventually ended up skipping these packages as I didn't need the services they provide. However, now if I ever try to run ...

linux is resilient to breakage. Try what the answer there says.

@ParanoidPanda still there?
morning everyone (or noon or evening)

4:13 AM
@KazWolfe Okay so I will control+C first to stop sudo dpkg --configure -a then I sudo apt-get clean, sudo apt-get install -f and again sudo dpkg --configure -a

basically
yay @linux.com address :D

someone lost ownership of ~/.local folder and they're asking why some themes didn't appear in list!
they were even doing sudo to copy at that place.

4:28 AM
@Anwar oh that theme question
how did OP's .local even get owned by root in the first place

That only God knows!!
they tend to not disclose these secret details!

i fear darker secrets lurk in OP's ~

W10's mail app is simultaneously amazing and terrible.
And I hate that.

ha ha. but that's not my problem. @edwinksl
but I wonder if you ever sleep!

secret

4:32 AM
he takes catnaps

i may or may not be omnipresent

let me count seconds

@KazWolfe That solve the problem, thanks! I think snapd is broken that is why the set up is taking to install so I purge snapd and do those three steps (1) sudo apt-get clean (2) sudo apt-get install -f and (3) sudo dpkg --configure -a. I can now a make installation sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client

well if it works...

Saurashtra is a region of western India, located on the Arabian Sea coast of Gujarat state. It consists of 11 districts of Gujarat, including Rajkot District. == Location == Saurashtra peninsula is bounded on the south and south-west by the Arabian sea, on the north-west by the Gulf of Kutch, and on the east by the Gulf of Khambhat. 4:43 AM
@Anwar OP of that perl question replied with a dropbox link lol

@edwinksl saw it :D added to the question

@Anwar i should have warned him not to manually install the deb, although that can be easily reversed

yes. agree with you

i have an au question idea
but it may get closed as PoB or too broad.
so i'm sad

what's the question?

4:45 AM
"What is the fastest way to destroy my system in order to infuriate IT?"

@Anwar so i think maybe we can ask him to dpkg -r that perl package and then fix the broken dependencies from scratch again

@edwinksl I think yes
@KazWolfe it will be off-topic I think. but interesting ... :D

yeah...
so how do i make it not off topic

@Anwar i will let you handle that since you are already on it :)
@KazWolfe say you want to specifically destroy a ubuntu system

i will

4:49 AM
but that would still be pob or too broad

not pob... I want as fast as possible

still too broad
i think

well i can try

no harm trying. you have enough rep to tank the downvotes

and i can just nuke it

4:51 AM
destroy in what way? I think most answers will say rm -rf /

there is a similar question here askubuntu.com/questions/641944/…

and I asked a question how to crash unity
what about deleting everything from /boot folder and reboot?

how would i tag this...

command-line

:P

Q: I need to destroy my Ubuntu install as fast as possible. How?

Kaz WolfeSo, I got into really hot water with my IT department, and they're on my way down to my desk right now. Turns out they hate free and open source software with a firey passion. Fortunately, they're not too bright. Either way, I need to get rid of my working Ubuntu right this second to avoid their ...

are there better ways than the usual ones? i am curious... time to google

@KazWolfe rm -rf /*

post an answer!

nice 1984 reference
@KazWolfe 1 CV. that didn't take long

bootsect is really quick.

5:11 AM
i like it, but partition analysis...

you need to boot into windows and use the command. There will be no sign of Ubuntu after reboot
that tag

we'll see how this goes
i'm going to be blackballed from question-asking in the future lol

at least you are not lord kife

true.
i have a positive impact on this site lol

@edwinksl You really meant lord troll.

5:18 AM
@KazWolfe you can't nuke a question after answers have been added i think

@Serg -_-

@Anwar are you going to make a chatroom for the perl guy
there are so many comments lol

Serg did it :p

@Serg hates fun.

oops, maybe command-line tag backfired...

5:21 AM
oooops!

sigh
It is a candidate for re-opening as the questions are fundamentally different.
that's asking for any, i'm asking for extremely fast methods.

Q: How to use Linux without any user and permissions

stormSorry for my strange question. I want to use Linux without any user. I mean. I want to use Linux system in way i run processes without any user, and freely edit any folder and any file without any permission entity. Yes, i additionally want that my system being totally unsecure. Maybe i need to u...

@edwinksl the system still hasn't given me the option
well the duplicate target is not valid imo

@Anwar huh, interesting, okay. let me know when it gets created. i am curious what broke OP's dependencies

ok. I'll let you know @edwinksl

5:24 AM

Q: Cannot access review queues

Kaz WolfeAs of 5:26 AM on September 9, 2016 (UTC), the review queues went down: This bug can be reproduced by attempting to visit any of the review queues on the site. Moderator Tools and flagging seems to be unaffected at this time.

i love how i'm hated on meta lol

A: /review/* failing on SE sites, but not SO

Jarrod DixonI pushed a bug that didn't manifest locally or on dev - a fix is going out now. Sorry!

culprit found

that guy is getting my MSE rep :(
and i actually need it. I keep getting murdered in all the meta sites
i'm down to 44 lol

what would be causing this?

sudo apt install virtualbox-5.0
return that pls

5:35 AM
heh
@KazWolfe I'm cracking up laughing lol
it's a joke
:P

meh! asked a question :)

@Anwar :)

@Anwar seems like a serg type of question

5:37 AM
brb getting question-banned on MSE

@edwinksl do we have a on AU?

you can create one :P but it will get burninated i am sure

welcome serg :)

@Serg Hello! o/ :)

5:40 AM
@KazWolfe I don't hate fun, i just did what other people would - closed a duplicate :)
Hello, chat ! o/

yet it's not a dupe...

It seems Nautilus doesn't let me to have even a real copy progress window on latest version. It just shows a progress pie.
@Serg o/
but that's not a dupe imo

@KazWolfe and what's your argument that it's not a dupe ?
@Anwar I've set the "Above" rule in ccsm , but the dialog now doesn't even show up XD

That question is looking for any/best way. I'm looking specifically for a quick and more-or-less irreversable method.
They're similar, yes, but the goals are ever slightly different.

@Serg what ??
lemme check
working fine here

Q: Why do we hate fun at StackExchange?

Kaz WolfeFun is Important™. Yet, we at StackExchange and our Lord and Savior Jeff Atwood tend to hate it, unless it's in "irrelevant" places like chat and the comments section. As long as it doesn't detract from the question at hand or otherwise impede the site's ability to function, why should we active...

I need ALL the downvotes!

@KazWolfe Arguably so. In either case, the end result requires irreversible destruction, and "best way" is a broad term, also implies efficiency and speed.
What does the chat think ?
Is Kaz's question a dupe ?
@Anwar welp, ain't working here for me

how. I edited a bit. you'll add type=Dialog

no VM for one :D
plus... that question really doesn't have any good, creative, out-of-the-box answers

A: How many hamsters power the StackExchange sites?

Nick CraverWe use 932 hampsters in rotating shifts of 212 for the web tier, they get 3 weeks of vacation time and all the carrots they want. Benefits also include medical and time off every 4th Tuesday and a bathroom break every 36 hours - we treat the help quite well here.

Some how I don't think SE hates fun that much

LOL

5:50 AM
can mod see voter?

Nobody but the system and Shog can see votes.

good.

They can, but the record is audited.
So they can't abuse it

I want to vote down a mod's answer. :P

@Anwar very hard to do, as most mods either stop producing answers after they become mods, or their sh*t is 1337 AF

5:55 AM
I need to go play in the sandbox.

yay halfway to modhood then!
(usually) 1337 answers, and always pestering existing mods

@Serg oh. anyway, did that work?

@KazWolfe answered cause I am sure that will HNQ ;p

i hope to god it does
i really need MSE rep

5:57 AM
This duplicate thing actually is stupid : )) — reversiblean 25 mins ago

also, question closed
@KazWolfe I want to hit 10K so if someone complains about me, and it gets downvoted and closed so fast I miss it, I can see it ;p

@Anwar nope :/ I've set it exactly as you showed, type=Dialog. Even tried filtering by title. That bloody dialog ain't comming back

i want to get over 100 again
to make up for my little... "forum" incident
and that bounty on that annoying bug

strange! it worked here. @Serg

@KazWolfe that single post made you lose that much rep ._.

5:59 AM
@KazWolfe what incident and which bounty?

@edwinksl well, i lost 50 on a bounty after the Edity incident.
And the rest was because of that question

Q: Discussion Forums?

Kaz Wolfe(Reposted + Modified from AU Meta) One of the great things about the StackExchange network is the ability to ask a question and get it answered. No fluff, no frills, nobody saying "Me too." However, sometimes things need to be tested. Sometimes clarification is needed. Sometimes, the chit-chat ...

this is the "incident"

oops!
@edwinksl that perl user disappeared!

meta sites just hate me altogether.
i don't have good ideas

Guys, is this opinion based ? askubuntu.com/q/674441/295286 I don't think it is, OP had specific issue, but created poor title making it look like opinion based question. Do you think it's worth reopen vote ?

6:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek thanks for easy +2

i'll take it
i'm just gonna start editing like hell on MSE
1000 edits to 2k, right?

@KazWolfe meta.stackexchange.com/questions/221239/… this is my most upvoted question on MSE ._.

lmao, not worth

LOL
@Serg I think a universal thing is broad. and actually there is no universal way afaik

@Anwar OP did reply with the debs he installed

6:08 AM
does MSE just hate everyone?

@edwinksl I checked but didn't see it. thanks.
@KazWolfe I think new one

@KazWolfe nope

@KazWolfe so your question is now in the reopen queue. let's see what happens

brb voting for it

That said, for some reason, people like me on the internet

6:11 AM
AU main likes me.
AU meta hates me. MSE hates me.
It's just meta lol

@Anwar yup , universal thing is definitely broad, partially opinion based. But OP's issue was that he tried creating iso 3 times, and it failed. Oh, by the way, about your question just now - i think you can bring up zenity dialog, but the problem is that the "File Operations" dialog is nautilus child. For whatever reason, it hides once it looses focus. I was able to get it back only by restarting nautilus

@Serg hmm... nautilus in 16.04 doesn't show a copy dialog. I tested with thunar's

@Anwar by the way, i edited that question to ask "What is the proper way to create installation media from Ubuntu iso ?" How's that ? Less opinion/broad based ?

and from the question what I understand is, they actually succeeded, but options were different in three different methods. I saw different usb creators giving different boot-menu before. but those are irrelevant to main installations.

I love flagging spams and bad post.

6:20 AM
@Serg i need to go now. I'll check the question later and will ping you

Q: Is this rotating cube interface user-friendly?

Peter OlsonI'm working on a prototype for an innovative form interface, where different parts of the form are shown on different sides of a cube. The cube rotates, and the user can fill it out as the cube spins. Here is a working example: To me, it seems like a pretty robust solution to our problem (i.e....

@NathanOsman are you familiar with python Gdk stuff ?

@Zanna oh hi our next 10ker

7:04 AM
@Serg Not really, no.
I have my head buried deep in the drm section of the kernel right now.

Understandable. I've my head burried in Gdk now :) Day in the life of a programmer

huh, wasn't aware of this definition of gdk urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gdk

I just love all the features of 8.1. Just wish I could use an ubuntu package manager and core and linux kernel with it all

@edwinksl As Zachary would say , le wut ?
