@DavidCole-GrammarPolice There was a post one time where the OP just went on a rant about why Ubuntu was stupid, and he threatened to go back to Windows if the devs didn't step up their game.

Current AMD Version: 4.1

@Zacharee1 One of the first proper Intel CPUs for PCs was the 8086 chip (16 bit) from 1978. Its successor was the 80186, then came 80286, then 80386 SX and 80386 DX, then 80486 and then they realized they can't have trademark rights on a number, so they called the 80586 Pentium ("penta"=5) instead.

Available Version: 9.0
Me: WTF

That's where the x86 comes from.
The basic architecture is still the same.

@ByteCommander OK. You can edit that in if you want. I just typed x86 into Google to make sure what I remembered was right :p
and then was vague on purpose

Q: Have Grub on a 3rd drive?

David Cole - Grammar PoliceWhat I am trying to do is dual-boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 16.04. I have both installed on 2 different hard drives. The process of having to choose between Ubuntu and Windows in BIOS is rather annoying, so I would like to install Grub on my 3rd drive (A 50GB solid state.) How would I go about doi...

Are grub questions on topic?

course!

9:46 PM
This update is take so long!! JFC
^ I say as it finished
brb, restart

you are upgrading to 16.04?
@Zanna someone hunting questions with c-state bug

it's me
I'm searching by processor
I compiled some info paste.ubuntu.com/23150351

@terdon what's the policy to deal with someone who downvotes all answers on a question ? i think we hot exactly that on this post unix.stackexchange.com/a/308815/85039
mine and another guy's answer got downvote without explanation

@edwinksl that could be a typo

@Zacharee1 it is apparently a thing
i had to read up on it

9:55 PM
@edwinksl that's a new trend in computing, since 32 bit is obsolete, trimming down it by one bit makes it more efficient XD

@edwinksl wai tho
@Serg or, you know, up by 32

Hmm... I signed up to linux foundation, but I think I won't fill out the students verification form. They want too much personal data.

@ByteCommander give them BND's address

31 bit? Did you eat the last one or what happened to it? There should be 32 of them... ;-) — Byte Commander 15 secs ago

but OP is right
In computer architecture, 31-bit integers, memory addresses, or other data units are those that are 31 bits wide. In 1983, IBM introduced 31-bit addressing in the System/370-XA mainframe architecture as an upgrade to the 24-bit physical and virtual, and transitional 24-bit-virtual/26-bit physical, addressing of earlier models. This enhancement allowed address spaces to be 128 times larger, permitting programs to address memory above 16 MiB (referred to as "above the line"). == Architecture == In the System/360 and early System/370 architectures, the general purpose registers were 32 bits wide,...

9:58 PM
o.O

scroll down to the linux/390 section

Why...

@edwinksl I highly doubt Ubuntu has a package for a 1980s arch

well, they're running some old hardware then . . . .

gave me some interesting history to read up on though, lol

10:02 PM
who asked me things?

no one . . . .but i see you asked an interesting question about data deletion

@ByteCommander The Linux Foundation is like the organization that owns the name Linux and does a lot of OSS funding

I know

@edwinksl TIL!

mkay, shower . . . .
@ByteCommander what did you sign up for ?
online classes ?

oh. didn't see that
@ByteCommander eh, it's Linus and Friends.
unless you're Panda, I doubt they're gonna be evil.
i really wanna get into a scam tech support call...
but they want those payment plans before they do any "work"

there is a youtube channel dedicated to that

yeah but i wanna set one up because i have a few ideas

remember to film it too and upload it somewhere

as in, set up a linux env that behaves just like windows functionally
By looking at the GUI, it's impossible to see it's not windows

10:12 PM
the windos-10-themes package gets you pretty far
and will probably fool too many people

get a PS1 to make terminal look like cmd

@KazWolfe I still don't want to give them my real name (which I unfortunately already did), phone number, full home address, my school, etc.

fair enough.

10:27 PM
@SmokeDetector lol

@KazWolfe as soon as you make a typo or forget to elevate privileges it will be obvious it's Linux since you'll get some at least friendly if not helpful message explaining you screwed up and suggesting how to fix it instead of Ilegal command

i can fix

evening!

10:43 PM
Goodnight! :)

thought good night was when you were about to go sleep, and good evening when you were greeting people at night

yes, correct

is it so?
oh, he was going to sleep haha

it is :)
he's in the UK and it's almost midnight here

@Zanna set "Defaults insults" in /etc/sudoers and then mistype your sudo password :)

10:46 PM
tech support scam idea: expel 100% of my knowledge at them and see what happens

@Zanna thought UK was on GMT +0, isn't it 22:50 there?

we are on BST (British Summer Time, GMT+1) it goes back to +0 in Winter

ooh, forgot it's summer there! :p

how are you @KazWolfe

okay.
meta is up in arms against me lol

10:54 PM
why? because you like uefi? haha

no, because i'm a rep farmer
and that's frowned upon because it de-values virtual internet points

@ByteCommander that is awesome, you made my day xD

hmm

@KazWolfe your MSE question is apparently hated

all of my meta posts are hated

10:57 PM
oh wait you have a +9 in MSE though

and -3 because the site hates me

@Zanna nice that you like it :)

<3
sleep time :)

Good night then
I'll leave soon as well probably

must be very late for you

Q: Change fonts everywhere in OS

brijsI am using elementary OS which is based on Ubuntu Linux. I would like to change my fonts everywhere text is displayed on OS. Is there a way to do it, or am I too hopeful?

and -1k because you love uefi

anyone here uses screen?

I don't use it, but what's your question?

Q: Install mdadm without postfix in ubuntu trusty because box doesn't have network connectivity

Hugh McCurdyMy question is similar to but not a duplicate of Install mdadm without postfix in ubuntu trusty. I'm building a box which amounts to an embedded appliance. When operational, it won't have network capability and it won't have a console. There won't be a way to transmit the e-mail to a human, ev...

was just wondering if it's worth using, I wanted to make it easier to run multiple terminals at once since I frequently need to, but after finding out Ctrl+Shift+T opens a new terminal tab, I'm wondering if screen is worth it
I think the attach feature is good though, in case I started something on a new terminal (instead of a new tab) I wouldn't be able to merge it with the original terminal without screen
I think I'll try it and just find out

11:38 PM
aye or nei ?
@IanC if you need multiple terminals, look into terminator. Also byobu

"brb restart" Doesn't come back for 2 hours
I hate upgrades
they always seem to fail for me
This damn computer has been unpacking shit for 2 hours
And it STILL isn't done

@Serg I'll take a look at those, but they are terminal simulators right?

Screen is annoying
tbh

11:54 PM
I guess learning to use screen would be good because it works on many terminal simulators I guess. maybe even on VTs?

s/simulators/emulators/

idk actually
thats a good question

I'll try it later

Why 2 hours into an upgrade is Ubuntu just updating software packages
OMG ITS DONE

11:55 PM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice only if you don't know how to use it or don't use it every day

yes

yep
Anyone know if there's any even semi stable AMD drivers for 16 as we speak?

I've been using it for communicating with raspberry and my microcontroller board. So useful !

TBH Ill take beta
alpha
Anything

11:59 PM
I'll try screen on VT
what are the shortcuts again?
Ctrl+Alt [F1-F6]?
