@IanC Windows has a pagefile.sys (Win NT) or swapfile.sys (Win 10) - not sure at which release they changed the name - in the root directory of a selectable drive, normally C:\

@ByteCommander I was not sure about recent windows versions, I only read older ones had a file on C:/ by default to be used for swapping. To be honest, the most recent version of windows I used was Vista, then I downgraded to XP until they dropped support for it

@IanC I'm proud of you :)

don't really miss windows at all, specially now that I'm learning so much about linux :)
man, the guys who wrote RealTimeKit were trolling when they decided to name the process rtkit-daemon? haha
I mean, I know that breaks the concept of a rootkit
but still

Smells like ham-werk

yurp

@Seth thing is... can we tweet it without the link? I'm not sure how the attribution thing works... or if a single sentence being quoted falls under that or not.

@NathanOsman oh, fair enough.
honestly I had neglected the license terms..
gr.

I'll try to get more of the code fixed up tonight, including the custom tweet form.
And the settings page.
Anyway, lunch is almost over. I'll be back later.

Hi, can anyone help on this question? The OP can't access the files in their /home but all permissions seem to be good, IDK what to tell them, any ideas? askubuntu.com/questions/831300/…

he ran chmod 700 and can't access files?

@ianC Yep

is joe really his user name? that's a bit odd
I just noticed the command you gave him had $USER instead of joe

@ianC I had them run it a few times and chown, using his user name and $USER, he said that user name was fine. Do you think it would make a difference to use absolute paths?

@IanC $USER evaluates to the username who runs it.

7:36 PM
yeah, that's what I meant @ByteCommander, means his username is really joe

@MarkKirby Looks like permissions are fine. If he can't see some files in there, they are not there, I guess. Testdisk data recovery?
It's probably more likely he ran a command that deleted files accidentally than one that modifies extended attributes or ACLs...

@ByteCommander That is how it looks to me too. I will get him to check form a live usb if any files actually exist in the folders.

That's a reasonable idea.
And he should stop writing to the disk, in case the files really got deleted!

@Zacharee1 poke

@Serg ekop

7:48 PM
who even pokes anyone in 2016

@Zacharee1 so , i haz two indicator icon orders. Just let me know when you're free to discuz them

@Zacharee1 wat

They flagged a question asked in chat as inappropriate because they thought it better to include it on Main
@Serg sure, just gimme maybe 10 mins

user136984
Anyone got any ideas for this or willing to put a bounty on it? :)

Q: Does NetBeans have a standard area for plugin configuration files?

Paranoid PandaI am developing a plugin for NetBeans IDE 8.1 and I need to store persistent preferences to a file on disk, is there a standard location in NetBeans to store configuration files for plugins? And if there is such a place then what's the easiest way of defining it (as the NetBeans could be installe...

I don't have that many points on SE that I would spend them for stuff I'm not personally interested in...
And no, no idea about beans. Sorry.

user136984
Ok, that's fine. :)

@Zacharee1 not 10k, can't see em flags :p

haw haw

@ParanoidPanda I don't use Stack Overflow, so if I can, I can offer up my 100 rep association bonus, it is not a massive bounty but it may help, if you don't get a better offer.

user136984
7:55 PM
@MarkKirby: If you'd be willing then that would be great! :)

@Zacharee1 how does a 17k user not know what chat flags do

probably new to chat

Sure :) I don't need it, you might as well use it.

OK, I think i got one set of icons figured out

user136984
@MarkKirby: Thanks! :)

7:57 PM
@ParanoidPanda Any thing you want me to put in the custom message box?

user136984
@MarkKirby: No, I don't think so...

@ParanoidPanda OK done.

user136984
@MarkKirby: Great! Thanks!! :)

@ParanoidPanda why wouldn't you put a bounty on it yourself?

user136984
@edwinksl: Because I ideally don't want to lose all the few privileges I've got there.

8:01 PM
@ParanoidPanda and somehow asking someone else to do it is better?

user136984
Well, if there is somebody to whom their rep on the site matters less then wouldn't it better be suited to them?

user136984
I'd probably do it if nobody came back to me, but I just wanted to ask around first...

user136984
Or actually, I probably wouldn't have put a bounty on it, but I do need the answer quite soon.

user136984
I don't know, I guess it would depend upon how desperate I got for an answer.

Since OP isn't going to do it: askubuntu.com/questions/831321/…

8:04 PM
I think I'll put a bounty here serverfault.com/questions/796788/…
what happens if it doesn't get answered anyways?
bounty goes to space?

@edwinksl It is fine :) I don't do much programming and don't need my privileges there. I will offer my association bonus to anyone who wants it, on any site I don't use.

@IanC It will enter the nirvana of wasted points.

@ParanoidPanda are you on any private chat programs? Like Skype, Discord, Slack or Tox?

@IanC More or less, it is 50% auto awarded to the highest voted answer, if non is accepted but you can't get it back.

user136984
@Zacharee1: Yes, though I don't really use them very much at the moment. Why?

user136984
8:06 PM
In fact I only have access at the moment to one of those you listed.

better not be Skype :p

user136984
Nope

user136984
Anyway, why do you ask?

good, because the US has full access to messages sent there

@MarkKirby that's nice of you, not sure if there are many people as generous as you are :)

8:08 PM
@edwinksl If I don't use it, what good is it to me :) Better it goes to helping someone, rather than just sitting there.

@ParanoidPanda sorry hang on

@Zacharee1 as if that would be news...

@ByteCommander it's not like it's illicit either. Skype literally gave them permission

@IanC Do you need that answering? I can stick my association bonus in a bounty for you too, if you want.

@ParanoidPanda alright, which platform are you on? Tox?

8:12 PM
@MarkKirby, it's alright, I might add it later (don't use server fault too, no use to that 100 rep :p), but thanks for offering man!

@IanC No worries.

@ParanoidPanda where'd you go
Just because:
@Zanna is awesome
2

This video is so beautifully hilarious! xD

@ByteCommander Have you seen the whole film? I thought it was great, one of my favourite comedy’s :)

No, unfortunately not.

8:17 PM
@ByteCommander No GEMA on that?

But I saw enough to know how the name "Tenacious D" was made and how the two got together ^_^
@Zacharee1 No. They block totally unrelated stuff like Japanese bands instead though.

@ByteCommander It is worth a watch, it is silly but hilarious, I have their CD's too.

lol

a long f time ago in a town named kickapooo

that movie is cool :)

8:20 PM
@Zacharee1 Haha it's impossible not to feel good with this going on!

:p

@Zanna This is getting the room's running joke...

what happened tp panda?
@ByteCommander but it's not a joke

@edwinksl news to me... nice tr answer btw!

8:25 PM
Yeah, not joke as in it is not true, but just implying that it's funny...
Not sure how to word it?

@Zacharee1 dark theme!!! community.skype.com/t5/Linux/…

yay!

@Zanna rare use of tr...

@ByteCommander you could ask on English Language & Usage but I don't think there is a way

:/ Icon size problems

8:36 PM
oh yeah
what do you need

Basically , rectangles that show usage . . .

uh
what intervals?

@ByteCommander How to word what? English is my first language, so perhaps I can help.

problem is that the freakin function for setting those icons in gtk . . .doesn't play nicely.
i can't set icon to be vertical

Q: Ubuntu 16.04 64bit Install

Aurélie JeanI boot Ubuntu on my laptop (Asus x553M) and I choose "Install Ubuntu" (uefi boot). Then a page loads with the logo Ubuntu with 5 dots underneath, but it gets stuck on it! How can I fix this?

8:38 PM
well I can just make them vertical @Serg

Intervals . . . lets do multiples of ten.
@Zacharee1 let's play with the 75% one first

ok
but multiples of 10 doesn't include 75

@MarkKirby how to describe the "Zanna is awesome" stuff happening in this room

8x16

wat

8:43 PM
If it's larger than 16x16 , the image looks too wide

WOW! Go to lunch for a bit, come back and there is 106 new messages in here. Active today, aren't we? :)

@NathanOsman cool, i will have to try what port does it use

@Serg - Wouldn't this be on-topic if the mention of 14.10 was removed? Should I edit? askubuntu.com/questions/831338/a-quirky-issue-with-guake

@Serg well I can easily do 8x16 and make 17 icons (emtpy-full)

@Terrance quite the crowd we have today

8:45 PM
Looks like it! And a good crowd! :)

Guys, 50 rep until @MarkKirby gets 10k!

@Terrance I leave chat open overnight on the weekends. Usually 500 new, but I've seen up to 1200 :p

@Zacharee1 he is capped for 3 more hours

nooo
taking off my upvote until it will give him rep
@everyone I'm going to spam a bunch of questions to CV in the Ubuntu Regulators room. Join if you want to help close them

8:49 PM
@ByteCommander I don't really understand the joke but running joke is quite appropriate as joke has two meanings. See this definition it fits macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/british/running-joke you could use the word gag if you did not want to imply the statement was not true, a gag is a joke but without the second meaning.
@Zacharee1 Aw thanks, I might be 10k in the morning, only took four years :)

@MarkKirby just wait till 8PM EDT
That's the new day

@AndroidDev that's more like a bug report, so it probably is off-topic, but not due to version
@Zacharee1 sigh . . . sure, make them 8x16 icons. I'll need to figure out sizing first

@Serg Well I already edited it... we'll see what happens

I can wait if you need me to

Q: admin concern about macchanger approach to our guest wifi

Mr hodgeswe have a guest wifi in our public areas that we though was protected by assigning a guest user and password, which only worked for 10 times in a month and had to be used at least once in a 48 hour period or it expired. Q: Name for distros based on other distros

time to start the bount

user136984
@Zacharee1 I was, but I currently don't have access to it. Though I am on Slack as a part of an Ubuntu team.

@ParanoidPanda do you have some way I and Kaz can talk to you? Maybe IRC?

user136984
@Zacharee1: Maybe, why?

I think Kaz wants this to be private, so I'm going to keep it that way

user136984
9:15 PM
Ok, how urgent is it?

not terribly

goodbye 50 rep, hopefully you will bring me some answers :p

but it'd be nice to do it tonight since we're available

well, gotta go buy some food

user136984
Ok, uhm, I'll see what I can do...

user136984
9:19 PM
@Zacharee1: Could you recommend me a good IRC client, just don't seem to have one installed and the one I would like to have does not seem to be available on Xenial.

the web?
freenode or whatever

@NathanOsman don't see it - is it a beta or dev run only? on arm?

user136984
@Zacharee1: No, I mean like an actual client, unless I can do it through my browser?

user136984
I thought you needed a specialised client?

user136984
I don't do very much on IRC.

9:20 PM
you don't
I don't use it much either :p
do you maybe have Discord?

user136984
No, I haven't heard of that actually.

or could you get one in the next 20 minutes or so? I need to go to dinner
@ParanoidPanda it's an open source gaming chat client

user136984
Yes, I hopefully should have it sorted by then.

replacement for Skype, just no video chat

@Zacharee1 what is happening? are you guys scheming against the world?

9:21 PM
@edwinksl mebeh

tsk tsk

heard about X-chat but I never used IRC, wanted to learn how it works

@ParanoidPanda so download Discord or use the web client. Just ping me your username and I'll get it set up.

user136984
@Zacharee1: Ok, I have logged onto Freenode under the username of arthur-dent.

user136984
@Zacharee1: You there? :)

9:30 PM
@ParanoidPanda - What does it mean if startx gives the error "Cannot open /dev/tty0 (No such file or directory)"?

user136984
@AndroidDev: Sorry, never had that problem before, I don't know...

@ParanoidPanda I broke my entire gui by simply xkilling Nautilus. How can I reinstall the ENTIRE gui system? (As in, if I were installing the gui for the first time on Ubuntu server)

ack.

@Zacharee1: I would like to get to bed soon as I am very tired and have had some long nights with little sleep so I would appreciate it if this good be reasonably quick. Preferably if it at least starts within the next 10 minutes. :)

@KazWolfe Can you help me? I've tried reinstalling lightdm, unity, ubuntu-desktop... nothing works. I can't easily reinstall because I don't have a separate /home partition :(

user136984
Just I'm falling asleep at my keyboard here.

@AndroidDev cp -R /home/* /media/BACKUPS/

@KazWolfe Copying 700GB would take a looong time.

@AndroidDev okay then. what is wrong?

9:40 PM
@AndroidDev Seems you would need to reinstall the X server? sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg IDK if it will work but looking around it might. Do you have a full error to give?

@ParanoidPanda then there isn't any particular urgent rush, really.

@AndroidDev The other night I kept reinstalling 14.04 over itself by accident and it worked. I don't have separate /home partition. I did finally format it though because I installed KDE, but I like Xfce4 more.

yeah, i think if you reinstall, your /home isn't nuked.
i'd check in a VM first, but...

I just had to remember not to choose format /

@KazWolfe Well, yesterday I apt-get upgraded, and then I attempted to mount a network share in Nautilus. It froze, so I xkilled it. Then everything went bonkers, so I sudo rebooted form tty1. On reboot, lightdm was completely messed up (not showing the desktop background) and there was no bar with the time and wifi at the top. If I try to log in, it does log me in, and then crashes and dumps me back after about 10 seconds.

user136984
9:42 PM
@KazWolfe: Ok, well, I should be online for another 10-15 minutes or so so if @Zacharee1 does come back and you guys do want to talk then I should be under the username I gave on Freenode. :)

@AndroidDev that... should not be caused by a simple xkill.
can you join ##tcn-5820481?

@KazWolfe And the one time I got it to let me stay logged in (there was no Unity BTW) it simply gave me a terminal that looked like it was from the GNOME days. What can I say?
On a black background

um...

user136984
@KazWolfe Are you talking to me?

@ParanoidPanda yes

9:44 PM
@KazWolfe Something is seriously messed up.

user136984
Right, ok, one moment. :)

does unity break before or after you log in?

@KazWolfe It isn't even there at all.

@AndroidDev let me rephrase. Is the login screen okay, or is it toast?

user136984
@KazWolfe: Two hashes or just the one?

9:45 PM
@KazWolfe Toast

@ParanoidPanda two

@KazWolfe It's toast

@AndroidDev okay let me think

user136984
@KazWolfe: Oh, well I joined one with just the one! :D

user136984
Don't think there was anyone there though, would it appear as just an empty channel if it didn't exist yet?

9:47 PM
good enough
no, i should be there
@ParanoidPanda same username, i assume you do see me.

user136984
@KazWolfe: Yes, I seem to be in the right room now.

@ParanoidPanda @KazWolfe I was at dinner
Almost back now

user136984
@Zacharee1: It's fine. :)

@Zacharee1 ping me when you're ready to enter and i'll -i the room

What's the room

9:51 PM
@KazWolfe - Login screen ^^^
@KazWolfe - Will be back in a bit. Please let me know if you can think of anything!

@KazWolfe OK I'm back at my computer
can you Slack me the server and such?

user136984

@ByteCommander that's a big question.
i expect at least 250 :P

lol
hmm

@ByteCommander when do you want it to be activated ? set brightness upon loging-in or at the login screen ?

reviews seem to be set to reset at UTC 2300 instead of 0000

10:06 PM
@KazWolfe If you start bargaining, I'll add some more requirements...

That is cool!

@Serg as early as possible please.

@ByteCommander OK, working

@ByteCommander I would test and build you an answer for that one, but I am still at work and not near my laptop that I use for testing things like that. :(

@ByteCommander Up"goat"? :)

running gag.
@AndroidDev Those are upgoats:

@ByteCommander lol

There's also an UPGOAT App

@ByteCommander Ummm.... okay....

10:28 PM
@Zacharee1 Trump looks like Heino in this picture.

sorry mods, i am stupid
i did not realize there was a CW button in the edit tab.
I will take my 40 lashes now.

@KazWolfe - Did you see the picture of the login screen?

@AndroidDev I did, it looks relatively normal.

@KazWolfe Notice no background and no bar at the top...

@AndroidDev huh. have you tried purging/reinstalling lightdm?

10:33 PM
@KazWolfe Yes

@ByteCommander if you open this web page with replacing your zipcode, does it give you the sunr and suns tags: wxdata.weather.com/wxdata/weather/local/<zipcode>?cc=*&unit=f&dayf=1

@AndroidDev hmmm.
i would just reinstall.
your home folder shouldn't be purged.

@KazWolfe I'd have to see that in action with a VM before I'd risk it.

@Terrance uh... please fix link formatting. Or format the whole URL as ode so that I can copy it.

"http://wxdata.weather.com/wxdata/weather/local/<zipcode>?cc=*&unit=f&dayf=1"
That worked

10:34 PM
thx

np

@KazWolfe - Can you get Kubuntu 16.04 to look like 14.04? Contrary to some others, I like the Aero type graphics.

@AndroidDev i think you can through theming
or by installing KDE4

Methinks this is a dupe:

Q: How to create a local ubuntu repo?

MonkuIn my company we are planning to move from SuSE to Ubuntu as a distribution for development environment. Previously for Suse, we had a server hosting RPMs of our packages and a developer would download those RPMs using svn and install them. Now, I want to create ubuntu repo of those packages so ...

@Terrance how can I select country? I need Germany, but it defaults to US.

10:37 PM
@ByteCommander That's a good question. Let me do a little more research on this. I have been using for a prompt I have been working on to give me a quick weather report. :)

@ByteCommander "http://wxdata.weather.com/wxdata/weather/local/GMXX0087?cc=*&unit=f&dayf=1" defaults to the locale of US, but gives me the Weather for Germany. Does it look correct otherwise?

looks okay, but I don't see how to edit the zip code there?

It's this code that changes GMXX0087

But that's not a German zip code.

10:43 PM
@Terrance why not use curl wttr.in in the termnal? :p

I'm starving. And there's no food in the house.

Those are 5 digits like 12345.
@edwinksl oh wow, this is cool!
But it doesn't have sunset/rise times.

@edwinksl It doesn't have sunrise or sunset
That is why I am working with the other link.

@Terrance ah okay

lynx can dump the data from the other link to give me that information which can be used for sunrise and sunset times for each day.

10:46 PM
@ByteCommander his secret identity was finally revealed?

@Mateo Well, embarrassingly, Trump actually has German ancestors...

us politician by day, german singer by later in the day...

@Seth ramen?

@KazWolfe Family hates that stuff so they won't let me buy it :/
I suppose it is pretty bad for you..

@ByteCommander What do German zip codes look like?

10:48 PM
@Seth then udon noodles!
they're actually relatively healthy, cheap, and they're good.
oh, and fast.

@KazWolfe it's the seasoning more than the noodles themselves.

@Seth the seasoning sucks.
i buy ramen, throw away the seasoning, boil it, add some soy sauce, maybe some actual chicken...
pretty good for less than $1/meal + leftovers

any ideas for how i can improve this answer?

@KazWolfe not when I'm this hungry.

@Terrance 5 digits, like US ones, I suppose.

@Seth you seriously have no food?

10:53 PM
@ByteCommander OK, thanks. Looking more into it.

@KazWolfe Random bits of stuff that you can't eat together, sure.

do it.

@Seth like? i might have an idea
also lol trips

eh, I'll be fine ;)

@ByteCommander got it for you
go to weather.com and enter your ZIP Code
or no... here.
http://wxdata.weather.com/wxdata/weather/local/<german ZIP>:4:GM?cc=*&unit=f&dayf=1

10:56 PM
xmlstarlet can then be used to extract the data from it.

@KazWolfe yup, that works :-)
