hi

afternoon @AhmedAl-attar :)

are questions about issues with the installation of a specific applications in wine on topic?

@Zanna how was your day ?
@DavidFoerster hi

@Zanna yeah i guess it should be reopened since answers in dupe target apparently didn't work
you are also the in-house steam expert, so we are relying on you

@AhmedAl-attar for me it's 0913 so not much to speak of yet, breakfast was good :) But I'm feeling kind of unwell, maybe I'm getting the 'flu or something
@edwinksl haha their problem is dpkg/APT I think, not Steam
I voted to reopen
@AhmedAl-attar how about you?

8:05 AM
ouh, cheer up , eat extra orange and candy :P

good idea, thanks :)

just wokeup , drinking coffee and still am feeling sleepy

ahh so it is morning for you too?

its 11:00 am

8:07 AM

thank you hahaha

From the UK
and still in the UK

timezone is so funny hahaha

what a stick in the mud

please can you exchange region ? :P
i love cloudy days.

@AhmedAl-attar I enjoy the mix of timezones here :)
@AhmedAl-attar depends what you've got, cloudy is definitely not my bag - are you offering sunshine and vegan food? if so, it's a deal...

8:09 AM
yeah exaclty what am offering lol

I'll take it, when can we arrange this?

its up to you :)
last time i came to uk , its was like 6 years ago

OK :) I'm not very organised though

I used to live near to greenford
you were there before me though!
I moved to London in 2012

8:11 AM
last time i wokeup early , and i saw the mist and freenish cloudy weather i was like wt...
like a child seeing a large balloon lol
my little sister lives in uk , with her husband

heh last time i was in london, i was staying near blackfriars station

@AhmedAl-attar ah nice :) I hope?

i recall walking past tate modern

@zanna
yes lol

what were you doing in London @edwinksl ?

8:14 AM
traveling
sadly i probably spent a grand total of 36 hours in london

@edwinksl whats your feedback ? :P

a significant portion of which was spent in heathrow
eh, i personally like london
i am a big city kind of person

Heathrow is not very nice. Schiphol is the best airport I've visited...

your a happy person , cool lol

anyway i wouldn't say i have visited london at all; it was a transit for me and my friends to continental europe...

8:18 AM
I am a big city person, but any big city nibbles away at your soul at times, I think

my all-time big city favorite is tokyo though :)

@edwinksl where are you from ?

it truly has tons of people
singapore

sigh I really want to go to Japan

8:20 AM
so me and UK go way back

me too , i want to go there

@edwinksl my apologies...

i want to try saky :P

@Zanna eh, UK overall did more good than harm to singapore

spelling check :P

8:21 AM
their greatest sin is probably not actually defending us against the japanese in WWII
or rather they did a piss poor job at that

your talking about singapore , in WW2 ?

yeah

History would consider the capture of the Malayan Peninsula and Singapore among the Japanese Army’s greatest wartime achievements. For Churchill it was among Britain’s worst Far Eastern defeats. Without a doubt, the tragic loss of Singapore in 1942 remained in Churchill’s memory for years to come.
that said, churchill is one hell of a controversial figure

I hate that guy

8:26 AM
yeah he was extremely racist even by the standards of his day

arch racist

agree
apparently he is still voted the greatest briton? bbc.com/news/magazine-29701767

smh yeah I am so ashamed

he had many important achievements as a statesman despite his shortcomings
so i'd understand him being voted "among the greatest", but the greatest? surely there are better candidates.

@DavidFoerster name one ;p
He just happened to be in the right place, at the right time, and had a great PR team, and extreme stubborness

8:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek you got me. i have to pass.

and no one remembers your defeats as long as you win at the end
(or your victories, if you lose, and someone else writes the history books)

saying churchill was the greatest briton seems similar to me like when someone told me helmut kohl was the greatest german.

@DavidFoerster What does greatest even mean tho?

sure, they had a tremendous (positive) influence on the recent history of their respective countries, but "greatest"… i don't know

What defines greatness?

8:40 AM
Our history education is outrageously jingoistic.

yeah, exacytly

@Zanna its true in most places.
also as far as ww2 and singapore went...
the japanese were seriously underestimated, and the brits were prepared for ww1, Greatcoats in the tropics and all
The japanese made VERY good use of carrier base assets.

@JourneymanGeek That may be, but especially inexcusable in our case I think

They also pissed off the americans, which was dumb...
@Zanna but the point of history education isn't to educate, its quite heavily to indoctrinate ;p

@JourneymanGeek oh absolutely

8:43 AM
I mean, what's the point of the average person being forced to learn history?

@JourneymanGeek Wasn't that pretty much unavoidable for Japan if it wanted to expand its Pacific influence? I always thought that the US was mainly holding off on a war with Japan because of lack of public support not because they weren't actutally that interested in the Pacific.

(as opposed to reading up due to interest, like I do)
@DavidFoerster Japan has far more soft power now than they did.
@DavidFoerster the japanese wanted dominion not influence tho
And many of their attitudes, especially towards the chinese was dumb

Just one particular kind of influence if you ask me
@JourneymanGeek That's what racist/nationalist attitudes are in general.

@JourneymanGeek I think history is important, but I agree with you totally that it's done to produce an obedient and nationalistic population in my country at least. Actually I blame my country for spreading the model of education-as-indoctrination too...

We have this thing called "national education"

8:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek hahaha i see where this is going

Basically one part of it is trying to indoctrinate into us a 'singaporean identity'
which works. Most xenophobia ... local chinese have issues with folk from the mainland, local indians have issues with....
but singaporeans stick together
The other aspect is trying to make people think of the government somewhat paternally...
@edwinksl the new citizen package is amusing... we were helping someone access it since he had no computer.

Hehe, I guess it helps having educational competence entirely on state level because that relieves the need to tell people about "The Great Nation" (i. e. currently a federation of states).

@DavidFoerster Well, it probably helps that I identify more in terms of a cultural tribe (geeks!) than racial or national identity

@JourneymanGeek I was referring to the education system not individual cultural identity.

@DavidFoerster I feel identity has to be innate
@DavidFoerster I was referring to the whole education as indoctrination thing.

8:52 AM
It doesn't have to be but innate identity removes a lot of dependency on more or less arbitrary outside groups and No True Scotsman arguments.

And states might not be any less jigotistic.

Difficult if the state doesn't have the power to declare or lead war.

Weird that he is using popen instead of subprocess.

hello you :)

Hi ?

hi

disputed ?
oh I get it

9:24 AM
I don't get it, what are you talking about?

@Zanna looks off-topic to me

@Edity yeah

:D

@edwinksl maybe but 5 votes needed for that :( I'd rather just upvote and move on

9:40 AM
@Zanna looks like your answer got unaccepted :(

what answer?
I never saw any accept
so no worry

the sed one
it happened right in front of my eyes lol
it was green on your answer
and then no more

shrug no worries:)
accept deserved by better answer :)
At least finally something I actually can answer arrived!

I don't know what to do now
Time to do stuff on the site now :)

@Zanna you can answer the one about PPA too

9:52 AM
@Serg umm.. i think someone is worshiping you...
ummmm
what should I do
I don't want worshipping users on my chat room

The simple solution is to RUN AWAAAAYYYYY

Or trash them >:D

@edwinksl I can? Maybe you can ;)

I'm confused now
Not only Henry's addicted to being a mod, he talks good about other users
I like it

user136984
There's been a delay, they will not be able to release Final Beta (2) until Monday.

9:59 AM
Huh? i hate delays!

user136984
And they like to do nothing on weekends. :P

what's delayed?
@ParanoidPanda what haz been delayed?

user136984
@Edity: The release of Final Beta (2).

user136984
As I said.

What Final Beta (2) ?

user136984
10:03 AM
How can you use Ubuntu and know nothing about how they release new releases?

OOOOOHHHH
I gets it.

user136984
@Edity: Here, have a look at this.

user136984
It should have been done on Thursday.

Lol
GR

On that note, I am so going for a walk

yeah the legs must mv

11:47 AM
@edwinksl whaaaaaaat?

@Zanna heh i left the chatroom and the trello board because i don't have time to do much with it yet. i will rejoin once i can find the time to actually help :p
@JourneymanGeek one of the comments from that pcworld article lol

@edwinksl that said, locking down bioses is lame, and IBM would have never done that

@JourneymanGeek you mean intel?

It's annoying when people copy-paste random stuff as answers

@edwinksl no worries :)

11:52 AM
@edwinksl I'm blaming lenovo... ;p
what if I don't want rst?

I need one more LQ to review to get 1000

This Lenovo thing is really annoying. The thinkpads were traditionally among the best, if not the best, Linux laptops. Since Lenovo bought out IBM's laptop division (or, rather, since Lenovo became independent rather than IBM's laptop division), they changed the best keyboard in the world and now they broke Linux support. Idiots.
