Ask Ubuntu General Room

I compiled a kernel as .deb packages and installed them but when I try to boot the kernel it does nothing other than my boot manager showing the command line. What could I be doing wrong ? Using elementary OS Loki (based on Ubuntu 16.04) on HP Pavilion g7 2269wm

when I type ls -al in my folder I see "." and ".." on the list. What do they mean? Are they just "." = current dir and ".." directory above?

There were a couple short blackouts (lasting anywhere between 5 minutes to a max of 2 hours) two days ago but it has been generally infrequent this year.

And this is not a blackout. The lights in my room are not working and so I thought I may take a break from being online.

@Serg: I see that you have now got a PPA, it's been a while since I've built a deb file though I remember it being relatively easy to do for a PPA (an absolute nightmare if you want to get it into the Debian repositories). I'm looking into making my own PPA, do you know any good guides for making deb files?
