lol

surely it is a q&a :P

yeah quick Edwin, write me a python script I can copypasta here

i am deciding between sleeping and reading r/nosleep :P

6:05 AM
hehe
should we vtc since he's using mint? ;)

@HenryWHHackv2.0 RIP I2P

@Zanna since you are clearly a bibliophile of the highest order, this might interest you

Yesssssssssssss I have solved it!!!

seems to be a dupe actually askubuntu.com/questions/14487/…
although gconf is no more
nope, I lied...

@Zanna i think github.com/Anthony25/… will still reset all colors back to original

6:08 AM
@edwinksl this is cool

@edwinksl quick answer it!!

@Jodamo117 yeah i don't read stories much at all but that held my interest the whole time

@edwinksl thanks I'll read later

Im a non-fiction reader but youre right, this is good

@Zanna but i don't know how to reset a particular palette color

6:10 AM
@andrew.46 awesome! I already upvoted
@edwinksl oh well, let him have his easy rep then

@Zanna or maybe this is a genuine question :P

@edwinksl not impossible

@Jodamo117 yeah the one i posted is the first series (with 8 parts lol). i am deciding between binge-reading series 2 and sleeping

@edwinksl "Boredom can lead to... technology that disrupts a monopoly"
@edwinksl reminds me of Linux

lol
don't spoil it here for people who might want to read it :)

6:17 AM
@Zanna Thanks :). I will not admit to how many hours I have been flailing away at that particular question.....

roger that

@Zanna i feel like editing out the linux mint part and just calling it Gnome terminal in case the question does get VTCed for being minty

@edwinksl that would be the nice thing to do yes... is the default terminal in Mint gnome-terminal?
@andrew.46 there's no need to do that ;)

yeah i googled and it does appear mint uses gnome terminal by default like ubuntu

I am a little slow unfortunately and getting slower as I get older :)

6:21 AM
I think slow, very slow sometimes, but given enough time, I sometimes think well

@Zanna underestimating yourself like a true brit

British? Perhaps a cup of tea and a cucmber sandwich might help?

haha not at all, I thought I was blowing my own trumpet there

Cannot think of any more stereotypes at the moment...

I have neither cucumber nor bread, but a cup of liquorice and peppermint tea has set me right
gah I need to get going

afternoon..

it is morning for me though, so thank you :)

6:32 AM
@edwinksl that vlc thing is a bug i think
oh..

@Anwar yeah i agree it is a bug. still not fixed in master branch of the vlc git repo too

i can give a workaround

but i am sick of vlc... i gonna try a different player

oh. why?

i have no idea why vlc still doesn't let me play a single frame in reverse

6:34 AM
never tried that thing

i actually need to watch some things frame by frame :P

in reverse?

it can go forward one frame
but not in reverse

hmm... just for fun ?

no, for work

6:35 AM
hahahhahaa

oh. what other players you tried?

my colleague uses mpv and recommends it, so i will try that out

we sometimes do that for fun. better when you loop a small portion of a video...
too much fun sometimes :D

@edwinksl theres 8 parts and a series 2. Might need a redbull for your binge read. Part 1 was awesome though. Bookmarked for future reading.

6:49 AM
@Rinzwind heh, thanks, i will take a look

there is an addon it seems but it needs a password :Z

@Jodamo117 glad you liked it :P

Q: Custom compiled kernel does nothing when booted

Suici DogaI compiled a kernel as .deb packages and installed them but when I try to boot the kernel it does nothing other than my boot manager showing the command line. What could I be doing wrong ? Using elementary OS Loki (based on Ubuntu 16.04) on HP Pavilion g7 2269wm

@Anwar indeed
I'm stuck supervising an exam for 5 hours with my laptop but no wifi password... this is the only situation where I can expect to get any "work" done

@Zanna pssssst! wifi password is ************

How does this star thing work? My password is password123
Hey it doesn't work for me!

Does ubuntu 16.04 include a jre by default?

I don't think so

9:54 AM
Thanks :)
I don't remember installing openjdk after purging oracle jdk so I assumed it was Just There

@Zanna Maybe you got it as dependency of something.
Good morning guys and girl and bot! :)

@SmokeDetector Are you a bot?

@Zanna yes. it does include openjdk-8-jre by default

@Zanna cookie.jar lol. nice names you give.

@ByteCommander yeah maybe :) morning || afternoon || evening

10:03 AM

@Anwar heh, nice but i am too lazy, so i just rely on jonathonf

@Anwar it's a mean facebook trick ;)

10:04 AM
@edwinksl couldn't resist Hehe although I should probably use a real jar...

@edwinksl that will be accepted I hope.
the good thing is that vlc answer got accepted! \o/

Nice :)

@edwinksl in this message I meant your answer. I didn't know it was already accepted

when I type ls -al in my folder I see "." and ".." on the list. What do they mean? Are they just "." = current dir and ".." directory above?

@OliverSchöning yeah that's correct

10:16 AM
Cool, thx

if you don't want to see them, you can do ls -Al instead

Alright :) Nah I was just curious ^^

@HenryWHHackv2.0 The only fun when programming in Scratch is that you can spin around cats...

Scratch is a programming language for babies and n00bs don't use it if your older than 12 and a half.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Had to use it at school in grade 10...

11:16 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Why not play with it if it's fun? :)

However, it's again a very special and advanced challenge to program something useful with its limited features.

Hehe
I don't know a kid who doesn't love it, I wish that had been around when I was in school

I programmed some kind of space invaders with it once.

@Zanna .........

@HenryWHHackv2.0 I actually like some of the concepts, like visual programming

11:27 AM
@jokerdino hiya :)
@ByteCommander awesome! My friend wrote some great games in high school, he ruined his classmates' concentration...

Oh, and I have Minesweeper, Connect 4 and Battleships on my CASIO Graphical Calculator :D

@Zanna you say some things just for the giggles, don't you?

Many, yes, but not at all what I said earlier, that your message replied to
That was entirely serious

Say that with a straight face.
Actually, don't do it. I liked the earlier message. Don't want to hear the truth.

Now you're making me laugh! But I swear I was being serious there ! I can't see what would be jokey about it!
Apart from the word swaggery, which may or may not be a real word...

11:37 AM
@jokerdino She can't say anything with a straight face, her avatar is laughing.
Smiling anyway

@Zanna I thought it was a sweet + jaggery
@terdon gonna have to make her pass the straight face test everything she says something.

@terdon my avatar is truthful, I am a smiler

@Zanna Don't worry, nobody's perfect.

@jokerdino yum :)
@terdon haha
It gets me into trouble for sure...

not a fan of pink hair though.

11:43 AM
that looks red to me

Selfie from right now
Pink, guilty as charged I'm afraid

@Zanna no thumbs up?

Hmm I must not be in an approving mood, but I'm not taking another one...

:(

@Zanna and blue

11:56 AM
Well spotted
@jokerdino Haha too much public exposure already

And you're teaching kids with that hair @Zanna? Cool! :D

Thanks... it changes a lot. Mostly they like it, but funniest is when a <10y/o looks at me in disgust

It's good thing that you train them to face hardships in life early on.

I'm a punk only deep inside, not daring to let it out...

12:08 PM
buries head.
@Zanna just send a thumbs up separately next month.
Gah, no lighting in the room today. Probs won't be around for later.

@jokerdino >_<
@jokerdino maybe not in the mail...
@ByteCommander I didn't bring any headphones...

Who cares, turn it loud! ;-D

My student is trying to write an essay...

or save it for later
what topic?

He wants to rewrite it in Python, that's a good thing.

"My answers were silently deleted without warning" - Sure. let me record me yelling. Just turn the volume up to 11....

12:30 PM
lol
Why are people people?

because they are not unpeople? And some have a certificate proving they are people?

What!? I need a certificate?
Damn!

:p
@terdon if you don't have one then you were never born
which means o_O.... you don't exist!

Ugh. No metaphysics on Sunday, please.

what is with all these questions? give SE social media features, make downvotes public, pay money for rep, pay money for bounties

They're classics. They come up every now and then.

good morning

morning! :)
whoop I got the wifi password

Hi all :D

askubuntu.com/q/823614/61218 We now need to know if Kali includes apt-add-repository by default if we try to pretend they are actually using Ubuntu

we close?

I voted to close
It seems, Kali provides apt-add-repository via python-software-properties package, while Ubuntu uses software-properties-common

then we should close as it's not helpful to Ubuntu users?

I voted to close as off-topic as Kali is off-topic on AU

Now I'm going through the people who want "urgent" tags and such

1:30 PM
what do you do to them?

Reading :p
someone can't handle opposing opinions
Shog is always so blunt in his answers meta.stackexchange.com/questions/203643/…

@Anwar on both of them

but why?!!

because they can't seem to handle differing opinons
you saw the question right? It's a proposal without any support

i think they wanted to remove the question...

@Anwar they're not getting out of it that easily :p

2:33 PM
Haha
I vote no repro or doea it deserve an answer? askubuntu.com/questions/823633/…

VTCed and DVed

Why DV? It's going to be closed anyway.

Don't DV
They don't want an answer now I see

Fine, no DV...

It's nicer... innocent mistake
Uh oh I'm late...

2:57 PM
Bellissim icon theme is great

3:10 PM
@jokerdino you need an electrician?

@Zanna could be blackouts

:(
more than anything, I need electricity. I need it for my dreams

(I have family in the state. When I visit, I er... manage)
I actually find not having a working fan worse than anything else.
(which is amusing since I'm online and in airconditioning a good chunk of my waking hours...)

3:29 PM
In London it's happened to me too sometimes... maybe 4 times in 4 years, and the water 7 or 8, that's much worse.

@Serg Oh, another indicator I've wanted for a while. A UTC clock.

@Zanna Wow. I think in my whole life there has not been a single water supply outage here.
Maybe once for a minute or so, but nothing serious...

Yeah people tell me everything works in Germany :)

At least the water works :)

I heard that a German company was commissioned to make some trains for use here, and to test them they had to deliberately beat up some tracks to reproduce UK conditions

3:39 PM
I'd guess Germany is the place with the world's best water supply.

Water is the most important thing I think
Unless you're a robot

3:56 PM
anyone knows what options are supported in udisksctl's -o parameters?
the man page is not helpful at all about this

4:18 PM
Sooooo many of these MetaSE questions are from people who had something happen to them they didn't like, who then applied the situation to everything

over-generalization

yes
dunno why they think that
These people also seem to really hate the idea of voting (up or down)

ranked #3 in voter list askubuntu.com/users?tab=voters
nice to see two mods in the list

Nice to see myself in the list :)

jokerdino increased his votes I see
Nice to see gnat on the list

4:30 PM
@Anwar I don't and I can't find any good documentation either. I use it for mounting /unmounting and seeing dev info but my attempts to explore other options haven't gone well... on mobile now

Thanks for the reply. I was looking for specifying the mount-point actually

how you're doing man?

@Zanna earlier you told me not to downvote... :)

Why DV? It's going to be closed anyway.
3 hours ago, by Zanna
Don't DV

@IanC @Anwar hi guys. doing fine, having my coffee. And you ?

5:40 PM
goo too, just waiting the washing machine, once it's done I'll take a nap before work
it will probably take 2 hours to finish so I'm looking for something to read haha
maybe a bit of Ruby, or the network protocols book

@Serg good day. Just finished dinner
I had some ideas for Unity. but I forgot them now

I have to read bunch of control systems stuff today. like a true engineering student, nothing is more motivating than due date tomorrow

exams week?

nope, just homework
I'm behind om schedule too, so have to catch up
I think this fall i won't be posting that many new answers

@Serg So true! xD

5:48 PM
@Zanna Yeah I guess I could use one.

how frequent are these blackouts there?

There were a couple short blackouts (lasting anywhere between 5 minutes to a max of 2 hours) two days ago but it has been generally infrequent this year.
And this is not a blackout. The lights in my room are not working and so I thought I may take a break from being online.

oh.

6:05 PM
@ByteCommander I didn't downvote, nor was I recommending that to others, I got a downvote and was sighing about it

Oh.

Right

looks like my linked question has little info on cursor customization :(

This question (askubuntu.com/questions/67128/…) recommends distributing source code for any applications targeting Ubuntu or other versions of Linux. What is recommended for closed source applications?
I can't just statically link because I need to use -lGL

@jokerdino o.0

6:32 PM
@Zanna Now, if you may permit, I shall head to bed.

oh ok, just this once I will allow ;)

Very kind of you.

agh
I kinda don't want to say it, but some of these people on Meta are idiots

shrug

who's forcing you to say it? if you don't want to say it then why? it is not a nice thing to say...

6:38 PM
@Zanna I don't want to say it because it's not nice, but I also feel like it really needs to be said
@Zanna read through the last three pages of "most upvoted" and you'll see what I mean
Now here's a question
Is (-3)^0 still 1 or is it -1?

I will happily take your word for it that there are many foolish things said there. But why does it need to be said that people are "idiots"? Who does it help to say that here?

1
@Zanna The Meta posts. They do things to your brain O_o
:p
@Zanna Some of them are innocent, like the requests for PMs, and others are kind of foolish, as you say, because they ask to end downvoting and such, but then there are the people who can't seem to grasp that those rules are there because they work: the same ones who tend to apply their experience in one singular instance to everyone everytime

I believe you, but I still don't think you "need" to say such things :)

@Zanna I never said I need to. I said I feel like I need to :p

I'll leave it to you to seek the difference there ;)

6:46 PM
@Zanna need is objective, feel the need is subjective

user136984
@Serg: I see that you have now got a PPA, it's been a while since I've built a deb file though I remember it being relatively easy to do for a PPA (an absolute nightmare if you want to get it into the Debian repositories). I'm looking into making my own PPA, do you know any good guides for making deb files?
