Q: How to correctly pronunciate Xenial Xerus?

luchonachoWhen referring to the latest Ubuntu 16.04 to friends, I often struggle about the pronunciation of "Xenial Xerus". Is there a universal pronunciation form? If so, which is? If not, how to determine the pronunciation in my native non-English language? Note: I am aware of a related question about...

The better question is: How to correctly pronunciate Yakkety Yak.

that is equally easy

@Zanna your link for xenial actually points to xerus

thanks... I will fix

Watch the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito Film, Twins. Arnie singing Yakkety Yak is a highlight!

phew I owe you one there @edwinksl!

9:15 AM
:D

Very much agree with you on this on @Zanna askubuntu.com/questions/807970/…

She will get eaten there if she doesn't take that advice haha

Friendly old SO!

yeah easily -10 in 1 minute

/'jækıti:'jæk/
IPA for Yakkety Yak^

9:19 AM
My mind says 'Don't talk back' every time I read it!

hahaha ^_^
you have a poetic turn then

It's driving me a little bit bonkers, might have to leave AU when it's released.

I wish someone would answer this question for me so I could find my IPA chars faster askubuntu.com/questions/805693/…

such a nice song though

Hi there

Hi Andrea, how are you?

very fine, thank you.

@AndreaLazzarotto Hello! :)

@Arronical omg governator

Fine, thank you. What about you?
BTW there is a user who posted a dupe question, then commented "no it's not a dupe", he even edited the question to write that, except for the fact that his own self-answer is a duplicate of one answer there... should I rollback? can someone have a look? askubuntu.com/posts/806570/revisions

9:28 AM
hmm never thought i would see a gentoo question here

@AndreaLazzarotto maybe he only tried the accepted answer.
@andrea, have it closed as a dupe of this maybe?

it seems so from the last comment, nevertheless isn't it a dupe anyway?
at that's also possible

I'm following your suggestion @jokerdino :)

I took the other one because the text of the Q looked more similar

Every question leads to that master one.
@Zanna thank you for confirming I am not insane.

9:33 AM
(I'm well @AndreaLazzarotto but a bit sleep deprived, as demonstrated by my inability to post correct links without help from @edwinksl)
@jokerdino <3

Who isn't sleep deprived these days? :D

funny you say that because I am sure Edwin is on a long stretch of sleepless nights.
@AndreaLazzarotto I sleep well thank you.

in that case my excuse failed... I must just be stupid hahahaha

@jokerdino i do sleep, unlike you :P

heh, No.
@edwinksl I sleep in classes :P

9:36 AM
I am glad to hear folks are sleeping well somewhere ^_^

I wish my tutors agree with you.

@edwinksl the secret of effective moderation is to somehow avoid being pinged when you sleep, while convincing your users you never sleep.

I think @edwinksl suggested reading man pages as a sleeping aid. I find man ps especially soporific

@JourneymanGeek i swear the mods here read chat all the time and take action without the rest of us noticing
@Zanna man ps is the quite the work of art...

@Zanna ROTFL

9:41 AM
@edwinksl (:

indeed, three cheers for mods :)

i am installing ubuntu on a new internal hard disk
can i choose use LVM with the new Ubuntu instllation ?
later on i will add another 500 G disk

morning

I would love to ask the question (which would immediately be closed) "what's your favourite thing to do with ps?"

to the same machine
@Zanna @ByteCommander can you help me ?

9:44 AM
morning Byte :)

i have two options currently
Erase disk and install Ubuntu(but this is a brand new disk)
use LVM with the new Ubuntu instllation
can I choose that as well ?
can somebody help me ???

I don't know about LVM @gansub :(

@Rinzwind - can you help eme ?
@Serg you there ?
@Oli
@jokerdino

@edwinksl which is good

@JourneymanGeek can you help me ?

9:47 AM
@gansub eh. Don't ping everyone.

yea yea i know but just give me a clue here
oK ?

Its a choice between LVM and No LVM

so should i choose it ?

LVM is good if you want to use more than one disk for your system.

yes i have more than one disk

9:48 AM
If you have no clue just pick erase disk
and pick the right disk

@JourneymanGeek i picked erase disk
and LVM is that OK ?

LVM won't hurt

thanks @JourneymanGeek

i appreciate your input very much

9:49 AM
@gansub Personally I tend to just do it. At worst I nuke everything

I slept for 8 hours 9 mins

IMO LVM is much more complex to administrate than ordinary partitions.
I always do it the old-skool way.

I couldn't install with LVM on my device... but it's a very recalcitrant machine

^ learned a new vocable :)

@Zanna do you run your messages through a thesaurus?

9:51 AM
Man, this is a good first answer askubuntu.com/a/807981/271

@Zanna I like how I can understand many of the most complicated English word because they come from latin and are similar to the Italian ones :P

Just a question for mac user (I know) is there a counter indication of rm -rf/var/macports ?

@Baldráni better luck here, I guess chat.stackexchange.com/…

@jokerdino @AndreaLazzarotto I just read a lot, I don't even realise I'm using obscure words >_< sorry!

9:53 AM
@AndreaLazzarotto With a total of 0 user... I'm not sure

but those are 0 Mac users... :D sorry I didn't check the number of users

@ByteCommander I'll give go ty :)

@Zanna no need to be sorry because you speak proper English :)
BTW guys, I recently discovered that the Gorgia browser extension works on AU as well... I don't know about you, but I am very excited that now I don't have to type the same things again and again (like "Welcome to Ask Ubuntu!"... which I didn't type here :D but inserted through the shortcut I created)

@Zanna i am sure you use recalcitrant to describe your students

9:56 AM
So I write auTab and "Welcome to Ask Ubuntu!" appears

yes but one should sedulously eschew obfuscatory hyperverbosity and prolixity ;)

banned

rofl

obfuscatory and prolixity sound understandable :D

hahaha @edwinksl I find a lot of uses for 'recalcitrant'

9:58 AM
googles words to see to see if @Zanna's vocabulistics are good

hahaha ^_^

user136984
And Firefox 48 still isn't here! :(

@JourneymanGeek the words check out

anyway, the English vocabulary is a bit inconsistent because it mixes words from latin and words that are not latin to express the same things

Wildly inconsistent... English is a sponge language

10:00 AM
from what I understood, it was 'one should carefully and slowly say obscure over-your-head words and that p-word that I have no idea about'.

@ParanoidPanda blimey! it is indeed still 47 for me

haha it was a quote from here github.com/Droogans/unmaintainable-code my translation would be 'avoid using language than nobody understands'

feels like no
tho. SiS? 0_0

10:05 AM
@AndreaLazzarotto there was a script that lets you insert canned comments.

per forma comments script?

yeah

user136984
Why is Firefox 46 in 16.10 but not 47?

don't know but I am on 48.

user136984
Seems a little weird... And they've got 48 waiting in proposed...

user136984
10:07 AM
Really?

user136984
@jokerdino: Where did you get it from?

user136984
I'm guessing not the repositories...

Fedora bodhi

user136984
Ah...

user136984
Yes, I'm now a bit jealous of a friend of mine who has Fedora and always gets the latest updates straight away.

10:12 AM
Tell you what?
I'm updating to Firefox 49 now.

user136984
:D

And finished.
Runs fine.
ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next
^ official PPA for stable beta Firefox releases
I use thunderbird-next as well.

user136984
Oh no... There's been a potential terrorist attack in London... :(

10:28 AM
:(

@Zanna the Hyperverbosity reminds me of Blackadder - "Allow me to be the first to offer Dr. Johnson my most sincere contrafibularities! I am anaspeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused him such pericombobulation."

too lazy to look every second word up n a dictionary now

my graphical UI does not seem to store my static IP address properly
is there a way to edit it manually ?

Time to make use of my regained 20k powers in the review queue. back laterz

I love Blackadder @Arronical :)
@ByteCommander no need to look, none of those are real words :)

10:35 AM
They're so nearly real words as to be truly brilliant.

maybe compunctuous is a word... adjective of compunction? hahaha

i googled "contrafibularities" and the first hit is a post in english SE lol

@Zanna Have you hit 20k yet? :)

No, but I got the Marshal badge today so 3 gold :) and hit 5k :)

Nice, congratulations. :)

10:41 AM
Thanks ^_^

5k... What powers do you get then...?

I suspect that you are unstoppable Zanna :)

Aww, that's a boring privilege. Only editing and voting on tag wikis. askubuntu.com/help/privileges/approve-tag-wiki-edits
10k will be cool again

And congrats for the 5k + gold...

I hardly dare edit tag wikis... so far I've edited 2, one with a painfully obvious typo (GIU instead of GUI) and one that didn't exist yet
thank you @andrew.46 I will soon be congratulating you I can see ^_^

10:45 AM
I have 3 days off now so I am hoping to lay down some quality answers. Groundwork for the move to 10k :)

I didn't do much tag wiki stuff either yet.

Three days off. Very nice :) I hope there are some nice questions for you

I need to spend some time also with abcde --> cli ripper. A small mountain of bug reports have appeared

Firefox 49's search suggestions look nice.
(using BlackFox V2 theme)

11:00 AM
nice theme

@jokerdino but I guess the script is specific to SE? I use Gorgias on all kind of sites.... it was born for Gmail (and rich snippets including HTML) but works on any textarea

Q: AutoReviewComments - Pro-forma comments for SE

@ByteCommander ooh nice theme :)

@ByteCommander fine now stop twitching my arm. Ill install it :O

@JourneymanGeek nice, thank you

wait why does it offer 48 to me/

@Rinzwind o.O?

11:27 AM

Iwant 49 though not 48
ah found it

ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next

no tar.gz for me ;-)
using /opt/ ofcourse

Ah. Well, as you wish :)

oh I hear you doubting me?
almost there :-)
there

Why should I doubt?
I'm just too lazy to install from source.
Videoey!
Hmm... That sounds weird.
Nauthy!

11:38 AM
it's a bit more snappy from 1st glance :)

yeah, nothing to complain about so far

Hi
Just sent @JacobVlijm an email. Really excited to hear what he thinks :D

argh mothers :P

@Rinzwind I feel u xD

she bought an mp3 player and now -I- have to stuff it with classical music
yeah YOU do the illegal stuff for me :=)

11:45 AM
I agree with the OP that this question should stay open and this older but less detailed and less viewed question be closed as duplicate

i haven't heard of anyone buying a mp3 player for a while until now

Countries that have officially adopted the metric system - https://t.co/rw6g3x4Ymd
Aka "why you risk to burn your food in the oven if you read american recipes"
:D

i fight with the americans constantly on this

@AndreaLazzarotto Yup. STILL using imperial over here >.<

they fail to see the light at the end of the imperial tunnel

11:49 AM
@edwinksl The way you phrased that, you make it seem like Metric is a bad thing

the same as they fail to understand that the concept of "hawaii pizza" 1. is not pizza 2. is offending :P :D

Generally the phrase, "light at the end of the tunnel" is referring to something better at the end ;)

my bad, typo

Perfect :)

Most commonly used in the UK whenever someone needs to accurately measure things. Normally cm and mm. If you've ever tried to use a metric/imperial spanner or allen key for the wrong kind of fixing, it can be a nightmare!

11:51 AM
I fail to see how anyone can think that something base not 10 makes sense.

I still think hours and minutes make sense

I mean, that makes sense, because there's only one standard
But for measurement of distance

ah ok :D
time for lunch now, I'll be back after eating my pasta :) see you

5280 feet in a mile? Sure why not! But only 12 inches per foot? Makes perfect sense! Oh, you want 3 feet per yard? YOLO!
>.<
And that's not even involving the obscure units like nails and sticks

gallon is pretty obnoxious; there is no unique gallon, you always need to qualify just exactly what kind of gallon you are talking about

11:59 AM
@AndreaLazzarotto they do when you consider it was invented by people that used base 12 and not base 10
and base 12 is far more convenient than base 10
(12 divides by 1,2,3,4,6, 10 just by 1,2,5)

@edwinksl and a normal gallon is 8 pints :=)
user image

I can do images too @StefanoPalazzo

well done
:P

:D

user136984
12:15 PM
@Rinzwind: There is very bad grammar in that image. :P

i am glad that it says "you're" instead of "your"

user136984
There are lots of missing apostrophes in there. "Youre" should be "You're" and "Lets" should be "Let's".

user136984
@edwinksl: I thought you said you were going to change your avatar?

damn you are right

fuck you met je engels you dont rul the inaer word — peter van huffel 1 min ago

I flagged it up as being "rude or offensive" and it got removed.

translate: leer dan ook één nederland het is echt geen chinees hoor en er zijn al heel goede vertaal sits
(from Dutch) learn one Netherlands it really is no hear Chinese and there are already very good translation sits
ah I see.

user136984
And what's the translation of the rude message to me?

user136984
It looks almost like he saying we don't rule the world... :D

translate: met je engels you dont rul the inaer word
(from English) met je engels you dont rul the inaer word
apparently, that one is English.

user136984
12:47 PM
He is obviously not a fan of globalization... :P

your english you do not rule the innerworld

user136984
"inner"?

no clue, probably meant whole

If I can hazard a guess
Is it something like "Just learn dutch! It's not Chinese, and there are very good translation sites"?

yeah, we got that one deciphered.

user136984
12:50 PM
This guy needs to be taught some manners though, we don't need people like him around here.

user136984
Telling me f off is not productive.

yes yes I got it now

user136984
Why did I have to be the one to comment? I knew this would happen after reading the title... :D

@ParanoidPanda Toch bedankt. Ik heb ze verteld dat hun gedrag is niet in orde :-)
echt niet in orde...

Q: Is it okay to ask the OP inside your answer to accept and upvote it?

Android DevTitle says it all. See this answer. I have bolded the questionable part of the quote. Burn Ubuntu to a DVD and you won't have any trouble booting it... glad that worked for you. Please rate and accept my answer.

user136984
12:56 PM
@StefanoPalazzo: Ah, good, and the first time Google Translate has given me a translation which is correct in grammar... :D

1:25 PM
@ParanoidPanda if a comment contains one of certain set of words, it will be deleted when a single flag is raised against it.
Generally, a comment requires 3+ flags. The above case is an exception.

user136984
@jokerdino: Ah... And is a mod notified as well or something?

No

user136984
2:00 PM
@jokerdino: So it's not logged anywhere at all that a user has just done something bad? If so, that's not good.

good evening

user136984
Good afternoon. ;P

Recently I saw many questions flagged as off-topic with reason being EOL release, but when those are asked, the dist release wasn't EOL. I don't see how these flag is acceptable!
@ParanoidPanda good afternoon
one such example is this question askubuntu.com/questions/729738/…

user136984
@AnwarShah: The community is a bit divided over this matter, I think the more official of the mods way is it leave it open. But I think it would actually be better if we closed old EOL questions, because we would close them if they were posted after the date of it going EOL, and we can't provide any more help than we can if they had posted it now so I don't think that the posting time makes any difference, and when a release is no longer supported, we shouldn't still support it.

user136984
Like there are questions from years back about now EOL releases, we really can't help them because the problems are being caused by the fact that the releases are EOL, like the problems have been fixed in later releases but because they don't upgrade they don't get the fixes. So what's the point in keeping the question open?

user136984
2:09 PM
Ooh... My hands smell of Hamsters! :D

well, we can protect or lock the questions to restrict activity on it. But closing is not seems most logical to me

user136984
Why not? We'd close it if it were posted now. Why should the time make the difference? Shouldn't it be the contents?

user136984
We should close it for the contents, not the time. The time now makes no difference.

user136984
Maybe they should have a system where they "archive" old questions like that or something so that it's not quite like closing, but I don't think that they should still stay open. What's the point? Maybe we should allow new EOL questions then with the same contents as the old.

I can see your reasons, but It doesn't feel most logical to me. anyway, we both agree that activity should be restricted
No, I am not saying new activity should be allowed. but closing sounds something negative about a question. which is not the case with questions asked within EOL period

2:15 PM
^Sorry about that.^

what was that? ^

Q: What is largest value of priority in limits.conf?

plongWhat is the largest value one may set the priority limit to in limits.conf? I came across a script that adds the entry, admin hard priority 50, but this simply results in the nice being set to 19. From googling, I found references to both 19 and 20 being the largest value. Is there any authoritat...

user136984
Well, closing is the only current official means for it, the other ways do restrict activity but are not the official for doing this sort of thing. Maybe questions should be frozen and given the 'close' reason "Expired" or something, but don't just leave them 'open'.
2

I agree with the "closed because it's expired" thing
like a supermarket, you remove blue cheese if it's been there for 5 years... even though it was a very good and valuable product while it was fresh :P

user136984
@AndreaLazzarotto: I love that example! :D

Q: Why downvote questions that will be closed anyway?

Jacob VlijmIt occurs to me that often questions of new users are downvoted for no other reason than to "let OP know he did a bad thing". Many times the question is not bad at all, but simply does not fit in the concept of AU. A single line to explain, and a close vote, will do the job. Nevertheless these q...

another one and it seems people like downvoting these question without looking at the asked date askubuntu.com/questions/720467/…
still voting to close though

3:03 PM
Hi

@ParanoidPanda Who said it's not logged? Mods are just not bugged about it. Otherwise, our inboxes will be flooded with inane things.

3:51 PM
What is the name of the small command in Ubuntu that can insert press of keyboard buttons?
I used it once to automate playing of Lord of Ultima but has forgotten its name.
Then, I had small JavaScript which needed those buttons/pressings.
To develop houses.
Any takers?

user136984
@Masi: No idea! But when you find out, let me know! Sounds great! :)

found - xdotool

user136984
Oh good! :)

4:24 PM
@Masi xdotool ?

4:34 PM
So Kentucky might be an understandable detour for the tablet, but it went all the way up to Connecticut last night.

haha took a wrong turning...

user136984
@Zacharee1: Shakespeare was right! The world really is a stage and we are all just actors! We're living in a comedy! ;D

@Masi xev is the command to show the keycodes

@Rinzwind Yes, thank you!

but xdotool works too >:)

4:42 PM
Yes

@ParanoidPanda sure but it was too prove I can post pixs here >:)

GNOME want to go completely Fedora focused and only give out flatpak (or whatever it's called) packages... What does that mean for Debian users? Or is the packaging for us more downstream?

ip route tells me something very strange
$ ip route
default via 192.168.0.1 dev wlan7 proto static metric 600
10.0.3.0/24 dev lxcbr0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.3.1
169.254.0.0/16 dev wlan7  scope link  metric 1000
Where did 169.254.0.0/16 come from ?

DHCP
wlan7 didnt get any IP from DHCP
30
Q: Why is Windows' default IP address 169.xx.xx.xx?

A.DonahueMy Windows system got an 169.xx.xx.xx IP address the other day, and I fixed the issue, but why did Microsoft chose this address as the default? Why not 1.xx.xx.xx or 255.xx.xx.xx? Did one guy at Microsoft say Hey, pick a number 1 to 255....who just said 169?! OK, we're going with that for...

4:58 PM
Zeroconf address , used when any dhcp client fails to get address
I use my laptop as gateway for my ethernet switch, so that makes sense

yeah.. something new learned today

5:23 PM
Is Chromium really lighter than Chrome? askubuntu.com/a/808112/367990
Not that this would answer the question at all anyway though...

ping loopback
PING loopback (198.105.254.23) 56(84) bytes of data.
um, what ???
@ByteCommander i'd say they're about the same

@ByteCommander none of the Google garbage.

Why got my NAA flag here declined? askubuntu.com/a/807991/367990

Seems like there's an attempt to answer, though very low quality

This NAA flagged answer also shows up in my declined flags. Why? It's clearly link only and therefore NAA (see that apple sign picture) askubuntu.com/a/802167/367990
And it's annoying that if you flag as NAA (e.g. because link only) and leave a comment, if the author edits their post to make it valid before the flag gets reviewed, my flag gets declined and ruins my flag weight.

5:29 PM
flag weight isn't a thing anymore.

sed 's/weight/score/'
and I get this annoying warning again.
Although all the recently 3 declined NAA flags were absolutely justified IMO at the time I cast them.

@ByteCommander good news by the way , i think i found a way to scroll with indicators ^($)_($)^

\m/
Great!

hmm

@ByteCommander And while I'm gonna be working on it, is there another idea that you have ? I can work in parallel on them

5:32 PM
on the one side I can see that it might be worrying because (apparently) it is easier to get flag banned now than when I was a flagger. On the other hand we're never going to catch all the instances of when someone edits an NAA into an actual answer, although we try.

@Serg xD No, currently not.
The flag review dialogue should show the revision at which the flag was raised as well as the current revision to prevent this probably? @Seth

hmm
I'm not sure how that would work, but little "badges" are shown for actions other moderators have already taken on a post. Maybe "OpEdited" should be one or something.

Btw, can you please check those 3 flags I got declined today and tell me why exactly I should not have flagged those? askubuntu.com/users/flag-summary/367990
I'm not going to nag about that they got declined, but this happens fairly often recently and I want to learn and avoid this annoying warning.

One of them you just got unlucky on. OP edited. Happens to everyone. Another I'm not sure. I will have to talk to the mod involved.

@ByteCommander I believe link only answers do not fall into 'NAA' type.

5:39 PM
This one is a bit of an edge case. There is information there besides the link, but it is more of a question. I would have probably converted it to a comment.
@AnwarShah they do.
