in general
idk about that one

I have not had any issues with compatibility in Ubuntu and my NVIDIA cards.

@Zanna we all Linux and Nvidia are always iffy, but at least there's support

@Zacharee1 Yeah, good luck taking Apple or Samsung to court.

@terdon well here's the thing
I don't have to prove to them rooting didn't cause the problem
they have to prove that it did
which means I can void KNOX and keep my warranty as long as what I do doesn't cause issues
cool

5:04 PM
@Zacharee1 That sounds wonderful and is probably absolutely true. However, they'll just say that your warranty is void and the only way to get them to change their minds would be to take them to court.

hmm

I've been told that my rooting voided the warranty. Short of taking the certified technician to court, I don't see how I could have changed anything.

you could point them to the federal law
because they probably don't know about it

Then just hire a lawyer that doesn't collect fees unless you win.

@Zacharee1 you could certainly try :)

5:07 PM
well
> “They have to show that the jailbreak caused the failure. If yes, they can void your claim (not your whole warranty—just the things which flowed from your mod),” Steve Lehto, a lemon law attorney in Michigan, told me in an email. “If not, then they can’t.”

I wish you the best of luck with it but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Remember that you'll just be talking to a clerk whose primary objective is to get you to pay for stuff.
They don't care about the law since their job is to apply company policy. If the policy is illegal, you'll have to prove it in a court of law.

This article is making me think they have no policy
they just try to make it seem like they won't accept rooted phones and hope no one tests it
> The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, passed by Congress in 1975, notes that “a warrantor cannot, as a matter of law, avoid liability under a written warranty where a defect is unrelated to the use by a consumer of ‘unauthorized’ articles or service.”

"How to install Lubuntu on Windows 98SE" wow windows 98

This copyright.gov/1201/2015/fedreg-publicinspectionFR.pdf Actually says that you can Jailbreak or root your device. =)

5:11 PM
So I just woke up to this:

@NathanOsman Hello!

Q: Badge Notification Repeats

HaemEternalNot sure if someone else has already raised this - I've got eleven notifications that I've received a Caucus badge on English Language Learners. Perhaps one notification for each community that I'm a member of? I am a member of the community, and did visit the election. Also, the badge hasn't be...

@NathanOsman lol
wish I could wake up to +65..

It's a bug.

What's worse, the notification keeps coming in but the badge isn't awarded.
@fedorqui yeah, I noticed that after posting this and left a comment to that effect on the dupe. I have now received yet another notification, but no badge. I'm starting to think there's something like if(!$badgeAwarded){awardBadge(); notifyUser} and there's a bug in awardBadge so it's stuck in a loop. — terdon 7 hours ago

5:18 PM
the joke trolls are here

> I get a 404 on the new link
someone thought it might have been a real link

@Zanna lol

lmao dat troll

Leawo Video Converter comes up a lot in audits

@karthick87 The only other way is selective sed approaches, and that's very painful.

5:28 PM
haha I know nothing

@karthick87 Consider that json.dump() only works if you provide a full JSON object. Also consider that when the file is opened in append mode, anything you try and write to the file is added to the end of the file

it won't overwrite or change existing content

@ThomasWard yep that makes sense :)

@karthick87 that leads to a broken file, or rather something you aren't expecting when it comes to JSON objects in your approach. So, either two files, one with master content and one with manipulated content, or overwrite the file. I would add try-except statements as well
because there's a large # of potential blowups here
and runtime exception breakages
my two cents :p

5:30 PM
@ThomasWard its one the way :)

@ThomasWard or more hint or help if you can.. Any checking is possible is here? like if the same input is already available in the JSON file it should give a message that it is already there and it should not overwrite the file.

@karthick87 I would also make sure that user input is adequately cleaned, esp. for filename path input. Since you're not using hardcoded filepaths or config files for it, you need to make sure the specified paths are valid for the distro or such
@karthick87 'checking' is vague
perhaps we should make a separate channel?

wait what
> I have many intrests, hating linux - oh wait i mean Linux, and windows, and nitroshare, and etc.

@Zacharee1 you on a rampage today eh

5:36 PM
heheheh

@Zacharee1 That's @ƎpᴉʇʎXD. Were you expecting sense?

@terdon true
I think

Q: I have a ms dos laptop and i want to dual boot it with windows 10 and ubuntu.What are the common errors to avoid?

akshit gattaniIm a newbie to linux(using windows since 5..!) and ive read so many opinions for selectiong uefi or enabling secure boot and about legacy boot that I can't understand for the love of my life what settings to have for problem free dual booting.I would truly be gratefull if someone would simplify a...

@Zacharee1 ah, the one true motivator
/me goes back to his homework.

@ThomasWard Thanks for pointing out that feature freeze has passed (already?!?) - I don't think it's worth an exception for NitroShare since no "major" changes were included. The only really big change was support for TLS being added.
I'll probably wait for 17.04 then.
And hopefully version 0.4 will be ready by then.

when in doubt, check the release sched.
FeatureFreeze was August 18th

5:43 PM
I would have checked had we been in September but I never would have dreamed it was so early.
For some reason I had it in my mind that feature freeze happened like a month in advance of release.
Anyone who wants the latest release is using the PPA anyway.

Hi, I just got an HP Envy x360 but it has an Intel 7265d
And I cannot make it work on Gnome Ubuntu, I was in Fedora and I was not able to make it work :s
I typed dmesg and it says while loading the driver Unsopported splx structure, I have no idea how to proceed, thanks in advance.

Hi, I did try to load them from there, same issue, Splx structure, apparently ubuntu has the right driver, but the wifi doesn't turn on.

Oh, I see. Hmm...
We used to have someone in here who was really good at troubleshooting wireless issues.
@chili555 if you have a minute, @Haguilar91 is in need of assistance with an Intel wifi card.

Thanks for your help Nathan, I have weeks trying to solve it, no luck :s

5:55 PM
I wish I could help but I am not too familiar with Intel cards.

I think this question is a duplicate of this one one

@Haguilar91 have you asked a question on the main site? That's the best way to get help

I've seen 3 posts, no answers in any of them.
And I've been looking for a solution for weeks, nothing :( Fedora has the same issue with it, No luck also, Thanks, and since this laptop has no Ethernet is hard for me to use it without wifi.

@Haguilar91 OK. Ask your own. You need to tell us: i) the exact model of your network card (show the output of lspci -nn | grep 0280); ii) the exact symptoms you are experiencing (the card is not seen by the system; the card is seen but you can't see any networks; you can see networks but can't connect etc); iii) the things you've tried and how they failed.

If you can't get it working, there are really cheap USB adapters you can get that have working Linux drivers, if that's an option for you.

6:00 PM
You should also have a look at wireless.wiki.kernel.org fr more information

But please do ask a question on the site in case we can get yours working.
@terdon Already did.

Whoops, so you did.

@NathanOsman We have a final freeze right before release. FeatureFreeze is usually a while before that, so we don't have substantial changes and can gun for Beta / RC testing
some things have exceptions during FeatureFreeze

Right.

bug-fix-only things, not introducing features, etc.
I got in an nginx-config-update during Xenial FeatureFreeze that didn't need an FFe for inclusion
the merges after the fact and new versions after that needed FFe review
but the TB had some influence and background
so the same guy always reviewed
(the config update was for php7.0 path changes)

6:03 PM
Yeah, I was able to get a bugfix exception for StackApplet for 15.04 IIRC.
The API URLs needed to be moved.

@NathanOsman bugfixes are easily accepted.
new features will not.

@ThomasWard I think it was about a day before final freeze :D

:P
crit fixes are FinalFreeze exceptions as well
so are Security fixes
at least, if I remember right.

@Rinzwind @Serg just sloooowwwwly starting up after summer break :)

hello

6:13 PM
@JamesTobin hi.

how are you @nathan

Good, thanks. And you?

not bad :)

not good, not bad, not ugly?

haha. I am doing very well :) was working on a tune on musescore a bit ago
does anyone know if a bug causing skype to malfunction on video calls is known on 16.04?

6:29 PM
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD Please add ALL errors to your question.
We may be missing valuable information.

ok
first of all it zooms in bigtime. Next, if I switch to another app the video stays on top of stuff but the window doe snot
@KazWolfe Sometimes it will even make blue flashes on my screen like a police car

wait, what?

oh, that message wasn't meant for you, my apologies
skype on video calls... What version of Skype are you running, and what graphics drivers do you have (if any) installed?

sorry about that. The skype version is the latest on their website (NOT the alpha)
my graphic drivers are Intel... I forgot the command to get detailed information

6:34 PM
intel is good enough for the path i was going down

(Y)

this is why i hate skype so much. um...
does this happen with any other video playback?

yeah... it didnt do this on Chalet OS 16.04 though
no it does not.
I use FB messenger for video chats and it behaves well
I tried reinstalling
and even installing an older version
there's an older version on the 16.04 repositories and I got that one. Still bonks.

Is your actual system up to date?

I think so
maybe I disabled it. Not sure. I have had a lot of grief with updates killing my computer

6:37 PM
Run sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade on your machine.

like the wifi will suddenly not work etc

It shouldn't do anything harmful-ish

hope not
I have had many bad experiences with updates
on 2 machines
one was Ubntu unity and then later Ubuntu MATE on same machine. Other was another UBuntu MATE on a desktop
I'll hope for the best :|

Skype 4.3 and Ubuntu 16.04 don't play nicely

@KazWolfe you finally got rid of your apt-get habit

6:39 PM
I've been trying hard

@edwinksl @KazWolfe YEAH!!! I HATE apt-get lol I always use apt

Still do it in a terminal semi often
In reality there's no difference lol

apt gives me a status bar
I hope I dont kill my system :|
/me shakes and shudders

If you do, we can probably unbreak it

yeah what if I cant boot or lose my internet lol

6:41 PM
Cell phone?

will just have to use my desktop

There are very few things that you can do to linux to permanently kill it

@KazWolfe I'll just go to the store and buy an old used modem for my windows 3.1 and upgrade it to 3.11 for workgroups yet lol

what store near you has modems?

dunno. I'm kidding anyway

6:42 PM
because i need to pay that a visit for a project.

if I do, please ping my ip haha
what, getting ancient computer online?
ethernet drivers and converters for 3.11 do exist

no, PBX related junk

Generally I use windows98 for internet on old stuff lol
my 3.1 just stays offline and is still my fastest computer

i wish it were as easy as getting 3.1 online with a GigE connection. But PBXes are worse.

If I get it online I'll probably do it through DOS
it's 6.00 but I can upgrade to .22

6:44 PM
here's a fun project for you.

I'm considering putting breadbox ensemble on allongside Windows

go from original dos all the way up to 10 on real hardware

original dos wont support ps/2 keyboard and I do not have serial

well then start at the lowest dos you can :P

my computer, for being a 1991 model, is actually very high end for it's day. most 1991's were 3 mb of ram and 32 mb hard drive. this one runs 8 mb ram and 2 dual 512 mb hard drives
it's a 386
DOS 5 itself may even get a headache on 512 mb hard drives

6:46 PM
Nice!

play some wolfenstein on every revision going up

HAHA

Here's another project: try installing Linux (probably not Ubuntu) on it. Arch might work.

arch? what is this, AskNoobs General Room?

I have a 1998 version of red hat

6:47 PM
LFS OR NOTHING
LINUX 1.0

lol

@KazWolfe WOOOT

the 1998 red hat is much eiaser to install then the old versions of Debian

does anyone have a PDP11?

man alive.. I gave up on Debian after a while. I got pretty far though, but the post install setup took me off

6:48 PM
LFS would probably be the safest bet, at that.

I want to try doing some things to it, now...

@KazWolfe Here is a project for you. Try to install the oldest version of Debian
I spent hours on it b4 I finally gave up
and set it up WITH networking lo
*lol

that's why we have Ubuntu

give me an ubutnu that works on 8 mb ram haha

so debian buzz?

6:50 PM
if It is that old and Linux I either go for some stripped version of corel Linux or else an old version of redhat

or debian 0.91?

old version of redhat was not very hard to install

oh god not again

I think I tried 2 and that was impossible
maybe it was buzz
cant remember

6:51 PM
@KazWolfe muahahahahaha

yeah it was buzz

:)
you'll be spending all day on that. just a warning lol
that's simply crazy. If I were in those days I'd just use DOS and windows 3.1. They were easier to install than most modern OS's today.

@KazWolfe I'll try it too.
"For science."

problem was DOS wasnt as powerful and the 3.1 terminal was nuts
@NathanOsman nice

6:55 PM
FOR ENGINEERING

@nathan rather for history lol

FOR WASTING PROCESSING POWER

FOR FAMILY AND COUNTRY!

for EXPERIMENTATIONALISMEITIONSNESSEALITIES

@NathanOsman that means something else on Imgur

6:56 PM
FOR FATHER LINUS

hehe

FOR A WORLD FREE FROM THE TYRANNY OF MICROSOFT AND APPLE

microsnack and dapple

ok now i need to go do things
i'll keep working on this when i get back

6:59 PM
Here we go...
