@Zacharee1 How come you're always sleepy in the afternoon?
Don't you get enough sleep during the night???µ

@Fabby on average I get 7 hours of sleep a night. However, I also have insomnia. Add that to the headaches, huge amount of homework, misophonia, and the walking around a large campus to different classes, and you get fatigue of no other kind

Go see your physician: you should get 10h of sleep at your age!

@Fabby oh, and anxiety
I could get something like 8, but I feel like something would go wrong if I slept to 7

@Zacharee1 GO ... SEE ... A ... DOCTOR!
(I'm not a doctor, but I can see someone needing one!)
Teens should be able to sleep 10h/day.
You need it to grow!

@Fabby For which? I've seen one for the headaches, no one knows why. Misophonia: no real treatment. Walking can't be avoided. Anxiety -- I don't know

12:11 AM
@Zacharee1 Start with a Psychiatrist...
My dad used to have really bad migraines and he went to see one because our GP told him to and he delayed it for years "because he wasn't crazy" and the first thing the Psychiatrist told him was: I'm a brain doctor, not a brain surgeon!
He hasn't had any migraines for the last 30 years or so...

er

user139252
I sleep about 6 hours a night

user139252
@Zacharee1 migraines or headaches?

@TheBrownOne dunno
frequent though

@Zacharee1 Go see a Psychiatrist and tell him that an old fart in a chat room told you to go see a psychiatrist because of his even older dad and his migraines and that Psychiatrists aren't just there for crazy people but they know more than any other doctor about brain chemistry!

12:23 AM
hmm
That'll probably have to happen over the summer or something :/

Why not on Saturday?
Why not tomorrow?

Boarding school

So if you get appendicitis you have to wait until summer???
Good luck in that school! You're going to need it!!!

I am confused by this line in a book: "operating system passes all of your shell's environment variables to programs that the shell runs, whereas shell variables are not accessible by the commands that you run."

that.. is confusing.

how are you programs and commands different here

12:33 AM
@Zacharee1 It's an obscure Babylon-5 reference...

Wow, it is windy!
@daBoss wat

12:38 AM
Okay I have ./speedtest-cli-extra
can I use crontab to make it run every 30 mins?

@Fabby Anenvironment variable is like a shell variable, but is not specific to the shell. All programs on Unix
systems have environment variable storage. The difference that you will notice is that the operating
system passes all of your shell's environment variables to programs that the shell runs, whereas shell
variables are not accessible by the commands that you run. Some programs use environment variables for
configuration and options. For example, you can put your favorite less command-line options in the LESS

@AbhishekBhatia reading...
@AbhishekBhatia OK, so an environment variable would be something like $PATH and a shell variable would be anything set in a shell config...
so a shell variable in a bash shell would only be readable by the bash shell and a ksh variable would only be readable by the ksh, whereas an environment variable would be readable by both... (cc @Seth)
Makes more sense now? @AbhishekBhatia

hmm, I have a verizon GSIII now.

Galaxy S3?

1:31 AM
seems unlockable but not necessarily ROM'able.
@Zacharee1 ya

Bootloader unlock you mean?

yeah

yeah, the BL is the easy part.
Finding a ROM that will run from 4.4.2 seems like it will be trickier.

CyanogenMod

1:36 AM
Apparently the VZW version has a qfuse that blows if the device upgrades past 4.2.2 that causes issues.

lol

@Zacharee1 CyanogenMod specifically will not work.

ugh

ugh indeed.

1:50 AM
@Seth Is it on 4.4?

how do I fix permission denied on an .sh script?

@Zacharee1 yeah
4.4.2 to be exact.

@daBoss chmod 777 :p
@Seth Then you're stuck as far as I've read
@daBoss or sudo script.sh

I hate VZW.

okay tha tworked

1:52 AM
huh, that's strange,
a guy voted on both the scope and webapp - really good for the webapp, poor for the scope says "use the real one" :/ totally missed the point - and a webapp certainly isn't "real"...

@Seth Agreed
@daBoss which one?

chmod 777

@Zacharee1 yeah I was looking at the one earlier
what makes you think it will actually work?

@Seth It's for the Verizon GS3, so I'm just guessing. Also, it looks like you only soft-brick your phone if something goes wrong, so you can always flash back to stock if it doesn't work

2:03 AM
@Zacharee1 the BL wasn't locked until 4.3 so anyone before that could have flashed a custom bl/recovery/whatever, hence the reason a few ROMs do exist.

@Seth hmm. I figured that maybe it'd also work for 4.4
doing some more research
Gah
There's no info

user139252

@Zacharee1 in 10 mins we shall see if all this works...

@daBoss what?
Someone visited my site from IE O_o

my internet speed monitor...

ah
Ugh
of course my header blur doesn't work in IE..

2:22 AM
If someone is stupid enough to use IE then they don't deserve to see the blur...

Edge broke everything
Doesn't show...
But Edge caused huge graphical glitches near anything that moved, even through other windows

Edge sucks...
except it is the fastest mobile browser I have ever used...

Windows 10 is so unstable.
Explorer broke, so I killed it, but when I tried to start it again, it wouldn't. This is recent
The second part that is
Auot hide has broken countless times

Are you in the fast ring?

Nope

2:27 AM
Oh...that is why...
The current fast ring build is very stable...

Maybe I should join

Or at least it is for me...
In about 4 minutes we should see another result pop up.

@NathanOsman Sup?

I'm trying to decide what to work on next.

2:31 AM
SWEET!
it worked!

I'm leaning towards NitroShare for Android...
I've had lots of people bugging me for that.

Now I have a pi-hole/internet speed monitor!
woot!

With graphs?

Yup
click the link and you will see it.

The spreadsheet?

2:32 AM
Yeah with the graph

I'm not seeing a graph...

Oh?

Oh...now I see it.
I just have a slow connection >.<
Now you will know when your provider short-changes you :D

Which they are...I pay for 50 down and 10 up

Though I certainly wouldn't complain about 30 down and 6 up.

everyone just closed their tabs all at the same time...lol
all the little icons went away at the same time...

@TheBrownOne hehe, i hope they have bacon pizza. Ukrainian pizza without bacon isn't sounding right

@Serg for some reason I'm thinking that's pizza with lard

@Zacharee1 bye
I'm a bit bothered by my microcontroller board
I couldn't connect to it with serial
Tty ACM0 shows up but screen is empty

@Serg what kind of microcontroller?

2:56 AM
@daBoss pic18
Actually there's two on the board. Pic18f87 j11 and pic18 f8722
That sucker costs 200$ but whatever i can do to get a passing grade, you know

that seems a little price for a printed circuit board...
@Serg did you see my link?

Hmm... Apple doesn't bundle Java anymore?

@NathanOsman does Safari even support java?

I don't know about Safari - I need it for Android Studio.
(The JDK, that is.)

Oh...I have no idea...

3:05 AM
Well, it seems like they don't.

@daBoss what link

@Serg
my latest invention.

Ping stats ? Im spreadsheet format ?
6 ms for upload ? Nice

ping stats, and download/upload stats
my rpi2 runs a speedtest automagically, and publishes it to the google spreed sheet every hour.

@daBoss let me guess . . . Python ?
By the way, that is def cool

3:15 AM
it is a script that uses speedtest-cli

and IFTTT

@daboss how are your adventures with Windows phone ?

Other then no Google support, I really like it.
fastest smart phone I have ever used.

Lol, rival companies :)

Oh and the random restarts and app crashes make me feel right at home on Windows.

Meanwhile I'm taking 4 classes, one Python, one microcontroller interacting, control system analysis, and computer architecture
@daBoss lol, if only they also had cmd for Windows phone
By the way that was an April's fool day joke last year

3:24 AM
@daBoss Even BSOD?

Holy balls ! Maybe windows are better with phones than PCs
Em.... Microsoft
Windows is the os...
I don't brain well

Granted the CMD is fairly limited...
No BSODs...just random restarts...

PowerShell to the rescue!

@NathanOsman you mean the shell that has couple of unix like commands and lengthy commands which are impossible to remember ?

3:26 AM
Yeah, that's the one :D
Hosting NitroShare's downloads on Launchpad has saved me nearly 1.5 TB of bandwidth.

So. . . .i got myself qemu this morning... now how do i do stuffs ?how do i install stuffs ?

qemu... wow, that's pretty intense.
I'd recommend starting with an amd64 virtual machine and once you are comfortable, moving to a foreign architecture, like ARM.

lol I couldn't figure out what was eating all the space on my 32gb microsd card on my pi2
I never ran raspi-config and expanded the filesystem...

Sure, I'll try to get amd64 of 16.04 first

Lol.

3:31 AM
it was 96% full...
now it is 4%

@Serg keep in mind that qemu does both KVM and full system emulation.
The former is similar to VirtualBox. The other will be about 20-40x slower.
(Okay, maybe not quite that much, but it will be much slower.)

I still don't know what to do with my second pi...

Buy a relay and use it to control an appliance.

auto keurig....
I could put some sort of sensor on it so i could get a text message when my coffee is done...
or I can just press the button, and and wait 30 seconds...

My ultimate goal for raspberry is coffee maker with ssh

user139252
3:42 AM
@Serg you Ukrainians are selfish

So far its just snappy Ubuntu, not really much going on there except for the docker.

user139252
Keeping delicious cashed all to yourselves

@TheBrownOne i know, that's why i prefer Chinese food, where everything is shared

@TheBrownOne not selfish if he gives us SSH access to his coffee maker :-D
or the coffee...

lol, I'll publish code for it, hows that ?

3:44 AM
NO! we want access to YOUR coffee maker!
I want to be able to flood your kitchen on demand!

Oo i doubt my mom will appreciate that

@Serg Good thing we are not asking her for permission :-D

Good point lol, that motivated me even more

Ooh. How about tea?

Drive time, will be back in 15mins or so

3:46 AM
@Serg where you driving to?

user139252
I had some cake thing that started with a P for dessert after dinner

@NathanOsman my wife likes tea...

Then it can return the "418 I'm a teapot" HTTP status code.
"Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol (HTCPCP/1.0)"
> "Coffee pots heat water using electronic mechanisms, so there is no fire. Thus, no firewalls are necessary, and firewall control policy is irrelevant. However, POST may be a trademark for coffee, and so the BREW method has been added. The BREW method may be used with other HTTP-based protocols (e.g., the Hyper Text Brewery Control Protocol)."
Lots of good humor in there.
> "Any attempt to brew coffee with a teapot should result in the error code "418 I'm a teapot". The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout."

@NathanOsman Stack Exchange returns 418 on occasion :D

> "Security Considerations Anyone who gets in between me and my morning coffee should be insecure."
Lol.

3:54 AM
@Seth looks like NYPD likes their Windows phones too...

interesting.

4:11 AM
@daBoss home . . .already there

@Serg oh where were you?

@daBoss so at the time i was chatting with you guys, i was taking train. It's 9:21 pm in Denver, my microcontroller class ends at 8 pm.
And i am on campus since 6:30 am.every day

5:01 AM
well I got root @Zacharee1, so that's a start.
I still need to take it apart and fix the button issue.

Hmmm , so I can connect to my microcontroller using actual serial port, but nothing shows up on the screen :/
I mean the cursor is rolling (it's supposed to be puking out HelloWorld in ascii )
but it's all invisible
I can cat -A it though and it kind of shows up right

@NathanOsman that screen shot of bandwidth usage is of server right (and not of desktop) ?

That's my desktop.

haha, nice

But I was only testing file transfers over the local network.
I have a gigabit router and apparently it works :D

if I want to bring answer to the top of list, will granting bounty work?

A raw TCP socket gets about 123 MB/s and NitroShare can get 112 MB/s. I'm not sure why it can't quite reach the same speed but who's really going to notice at those speeds :P

120MB/s is already huge
@NathanOsman passwd command is run a user with root privileges because of set uid bit?

Good question.
I'm not sure.

Good advice on my part, right?
Also, does Linux monitor server hardware on its own by default?

not by default
there's tools, but you need to have something monitoring it

10:43 AM
@NathanOsman Wow! GBit link? I always say that NitroShare is even faster then FTP... And they're using 2 ports and you're only using one!

@NathanOsman What's the speed of FTP on the same file? (look at the masters of all file transfer programs and apply the same optimisations they use)
