12:03 AM
Alright. All together know. You know how it goes: "2017 is the year of the Linux desktop."
Likes and retweets appreciated.
:)
@NathanOsman I can't support you... I'm saying 2017 is the year of the Linux Laptop :p
Good luck with that. Hope you can wake your laptop from suspend >:)
(I'm sure you can but that was low hanging fruit :P)
or have it not do anything when closing the lid ;)
I have a script just for that :)
12:22 AM
is this on-topic (optimal BIOS settings)? askubuntu.com/q/865207/367990 I'd say it could be closed both as not Ubuntu or opinion based, but it's a grey zone
12:45 AM
I dunno... Seems lately that if Windows 8.1 is shutdown then powered on to grub and Ubuntu versus Windows 8.1 restarted and going to grub and then Ubuntu... things seem to change but maybe I"m being superstitious here. Anyway I think BIOS is just as on topic as S.M.A.R.T. for HDDs or TRIM for SSDs.
1:26 AM
I ended up CV'ing that one as answers would be too broad.
@NathanOsman well we just need a good office suite and more games.
and to lose the reputation for "terminal nerd mode"
@ThomasWard wat ? askubuntu.com/q/865219
abusing mod powers, are we, @ThomasWard?
wow is eliah kagan back
1:32 AM
@Serg Smokey testing. Necessary, because I think I broke deletion of alerts xD
@KazWolfe For all of ten minutes. Gotta test things :)
we needed a junk post to report on Smokey
mods get to guinea pig their site live? wat.
i thought that was what MetaSE is for.
:P
@KazWolfe Yeah, I know, right? :P
so i can do tests on this site?
@KazWolfe Once in an eternity, yes :)
@ThomasWard but i'm technically a moderator. after all, the site is modded by the community, right?
>:D
1:35 AM
Sort of yes, officially no, according to rules maybe
shrugs
I have a christmas question for you guys
Furry important
You know those holographic projector thingies that display slide show on a house ?
What are those called ?
yes. they're called projectors
that's it ?
yes.
they're run of the mill projectors.
1:38 AM
@ThomasWard you're supposed to do it when no one is looking :P
@Seth :P
@Seth true statement, but that's never ;)
Or maybe post a giant freakin warning in the chat THIS IS JUST A TEST and follow up with that annoying buzz sound
@NathanOsman all together know?
@ThomasWard no one noticed me do it :P
yeah. letting us know before we go all panic mode would be nice.
this is only a test of the test testing test. Do not panic. We're testing the test tester
1:46 AM
so you're testing JUnit?
@Seth huh?
OH DANG.
( ._.)
A typo in the tweet.
I hate that you can't edit it.
Twiiiiittttteeeeerrrrr.....
Argh.
throws sticks at Twitter
3
@ThomasWard you need to throw birbs.
1:49 AM
what if I want to throw firebombs
throw firebirbs.
no i'll throw firebombs...
firebombs... FROM SPACE!!!
lazers?
I still don't understand twitter. I sort of get it, but i still don't
Wow. MPEG2 encoding is much faster than h264 on this machine.
I mean, yes, that makes sense. But the difference is quite impressive.
2:10 AM
DVD+RW drive is giving me issues...
when does dvdrw not give people issues
@KazWolfe who tests the test testing test? Who tests the test testing test tester?
@JourneymanGeek it tests itself.
It cannot test itself. ._.
ITS TESTS ALLLLL THE WAY DOWN! TESSSSSSSTS!
manual tests.
2:16 AM
WITH THEIR HARD SHELLS AND BEEDY EYES AND SLIGHTLY TOXIC DIETS!
problem solved.
but how do we know the testers are doing it right?
we test the testers.
OP updated his question about BIOS saying it's for compatability with Ubuntu: askubuntu.com/q/865207/295286 Reopen or nah ?
@Serg POB
And we're gonna get into a BIOS v. UEFI argument.
2:21 AM
throws an overweight pigeon at @JourneymanGeek
@ThomasWard so a chicken?
@ThomasWard not a test. Seems more like a packet transport media.
@KazWolfe what's POB ?
Also, bit of a messy audit trail.
2:22 AM
@KazWolfe That is not a chicken.
@ThomasWard pretty sure its just fluffed up
@Serg Primarily Opinion Based
That pigeon isn't overweight, just slightly . . . feathery
@ThomasWard a fat pigeon is basically a chicken.

yes. AUGR is used to the spam.
@KazWolfe SPEAKING OF SPAM... you're spamming ;)
@ThomasWard You missed it while I was gone, no?
o/ @angussidney
@KazWolfe Actually I found it kinda pleasant that I was able to mess with Smokey's code without being interrupted by noise :)
\o, fancy meeting you here :P
but then I kinda pulled a power cable and had alarms all over the place so...
@angussidney :P
to answer your question, yes you still need a bootloader.
Something needs to load Linux.
2:26 AM
@angussidney ^ that - you need a bootloader to load Linux.
That doesn't mean your bootloader needs to be responsible for Windows, too. If you have UEFI, that can take care of the division. But you'd need GRUB no matter what.
Oh, true
hell, even windows has a low-level bootloader, technically.
@KazWolfe I've never seen that setup on a single drive
2:27 AM
but it's just easier (usually) to let GRUB manage everything. no buttons during boot, etc.
2 secs, let me unplug unneccessary hard drives and restart the installer
and grub will (by default) take over the entire boot procedure, because it can.
wow, okay, I'm at +230 rep since my single answer on Ask Ubuntu earlier today xD
@JourneymanGeek I use it to get into OSX (occasionally)
I typically do do seperate drives per OS tho
2:28 AM
you're not on a laptop
even of oddly, my current dualboot is haiku + disposable lubuntu liveusb
Haiku still exists ? O_o
@ThomasWard oh new UTC day has started, time to activate my sockpuppets to upvote you again
@edwinksl and I will torpedo your socks
Enjoy the flaming wrath from above
Back now. Okay, so here is what I want to do: I have an SSD which has windows installed on it, and a spare 320GB hard drive which I'm going to install 16.04 on. My original plan was to leave my SSD as the default boot device, and use the F11 key at startup to override the boot order temporarily to select the hard drive with ubuntu on it.
However, you are suggesting that I use GRUB to select windows or Ubuntu at startup?
2:39 AM
@angussidney yank out the SSD, install directly to the hard drive, then your BIOS selection will still work
put the SSD back in, choose primary drive in firmware, might work right (probably will)
god this instant coffee is crap...
how do people drink this sludge...
@ThomasWard hahahahahhahahahahahahahahhhahahahahahhahahahaha
However using grub does seem like a better way to do it, so how should I go about setting it up? I'm currently at the custom installation page.
just leaving this here for posterity
lol
okay i need to sleep, my body is screaming for rest... good night.
Just found a quite convincing impersonator of one of the channels i follow on youtube. Wouldn't even notice till it clicked - there's no verified mark on the channel name, and it's spelled oddly
2:47 AM
am kil
What's interesting is that it came up in my recommended feed, lol
too bad you can't third-party report for violation anymore
You can. I just did
Jackceptlceye lol
@Serg what??
that's new-new
zach = nub
2:49 AM
Go to channel's about tab and there's a flag button. Flag for impersonation
@edwinksl ur mam == nub
flaggggggggggggg
@edwinksl also wrong qualifier nub
@Serg yeah it used to be that you'd have to be the person who's being impersonated
I tried it a few times and it never worked
weird
let us all join forces and smash some CVs
2:50 AM
Well, since recently youtube implemented moderation by community , which has its drawbacks, but is kinda useful
I guess that was more recentlt than me trying to report :p
By draw backs, I mean someone falsely flagging a video for copyright violation of they don't like a youtuber or disagree with what they say
I second Byte's comment... turning off error diagnostics is as bad as unplugging a smoke detector that is too sensitive. — WinEunuuchs2Unix 2 hours ago
@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's a great analogy ^
@Zacharee1 rip in pepperoni
isn't pepperoni already plural?
wouldn't a singular one be pepperonus or pepperona?
2:54 AM
not sure tbh
who cares, it's tasty anyway

i think you are right
@Zacharee1 error diagnostics doesn't save you from anything
it's already happened
Hi, I'd like a salamus sandwich, please. "You mean salami?" No, just a single salamus. "Um ok, anything else on that?" Yes, one pepperonus.

@Seth and so has the fire, but knowing about it can help you mitigate further damage

@Rand0mAcc3ss @nixcraft I assume that emacs was the gateway drug that led to the creation of systemd. That, and a love of svchost.exe
Ha. ha. hahaha. hahahaha. hahahahahahahahaha xD
Lolololol.
4:30 AM
Ooooo, that makes so much sense now, svchost.exe . . . systemd . . . illuminati confirmed
5
Funny enough, both have 8 chars in their name ( minus the .exe part )
DIR:/xieerqi|21:31|skolodya@ubuntu:
$ wc -c <<< "svchost"
8

DIR:/xieerqi|21:32|skolodya@ubuntu:

8
( 7 chars plus newline given by bash's here string )

5:16 AM
@IanC hi ! SSD started working again by itself. I don't think it's SSD problem. badblocks command didn't report anything. Something else may have happened, and I don't know what could have been the issue. But I'm back to working on my laptop as usual.
nice!
I used to think it was bad connection with the pins, but . . .it seems too good to be true
maybe it was software related?
Well, if it was software problem, it would re-occur more frequently, i think.
Could the RTC battery in the motherboard be cause of this ?
i don't think so?
5:19 AM
If I remove laptop battery and plug it back in, the laptop often complains about RTC battery being low
SSDs aren't RTC dependent, i think.
Well, like I said, at this point I don't think it's SSD issue. It's something else
try re-seating it?

got into the chapter on vim scripts @Serg, I think after some reading I'll come up with a nice .vimrc file for different programming environments, maybe if it's useful for you I can send you it
@IanC that'd be great :D
I need to advance my vim skills
I guess the hardest part is to memorize all the commands and options, the scripting syntax is a bit intuitive for who already code

5:34 AM
Yeah, but still . . .time flies
this year went by quite fast indeed
Good thing it's almost over though. It's been sort of hectic
I'm not sure if it's our impression of it, but it did feel like a heavy year..
Well, with new year, I think we should leave behind the impressions and be more positive and active
At least that's what I hope to do
5:51 AM
gotta admit I've been feeling a little negative lately, could use some change of perspective too @Serg :p
:D Yep, so maybe we should try to change perspective in 2017

A: file is visible on my desktop but not via the ls command

Kaz WolfeThis problem is not related to Java. Instead, it can probably be blamed on desktop caching. Namely, the files themselves were actually deleted, but the file manager (for whatever reason) did not respond to the fact that the files vanished, and keeps your "ghost" icon around. You can fix this by ...

how did i get the bounty here?
@KazWolfe your answer is highest voted, and since OP didn't award bounty to anyone, highest voted answer gets half the bounty value
@Serg then i'm blind, because another answer has 3 votes, no?
i mean, i don't think i'm going crazy, yet.
@KazWolfe Indeed there is, and that's . . . peculiar . . . But a good question for Meta !
@Serg gulp

Q: I got a bounty I didn't deserve -- why?

user208574Recently, I received an automatic bounty for this question on AskUbuntu, but there's no way I could have deserved the award. As per the help center: If you do not award your bounty within 7 days (plus the grace period), the highest voted answer created after the bounty started with a minimum...

i mean i usually wouldn't complain, but hats.
ah...
> If you do not award your bounty within 7 days (plus the grace period), the highest voted answer created after the bounty started with a minimum score of 2 will be awarded half the bounty amount (or the full amount, if the answer is also accepted). If two or more eligible answers have the same score (their scores are tied), the oldest answer is chosen. If there's no answer meeting those criteria, no bounty is awarded to anyone.
8:37 AM
rip hat
That makes sense , apparently
also, unexpected random hatter xD
i mean, i'm not going to complain, but hat... meh.
+25?
Mystery solved, bounty is legit, Force is still strong with AU
i mean, you came back because of hats. i say hat > +25
i didn't come back because of just hats.
i was bored.
and zanna just flew past me to 20k.
8:39 AM
did you expect to beat her to 20k?
god no.
but that kinda kickstarted me back into AU.
sad that this is the overall value
still 200 to go on AU
pretty close to seeing the graveyard of deleted posts
well its the overall network value
9783 on AU
8:41 AM
take a free +20
this is fine is an annoying hat.
i need to write a good answer, but not so good that it gets the bounty.
i have a bounty open atm :) for one particular question
just not yet sure to whom to award it to
I usually don't get no bounties. The questions are either to complex for me or OP favors someone else . . . or both
@Videonauth tell you what, i answer under the condition that i don't get the bounty.
well there are two good answers till now
