12:10 AM
@ParanoidPanda Have a great night! =)

@Zacharee1 - so some cached game-state was corrupt and it was borking the plugin?
o/ @Mateo

Hi @hbdgaf
Anything intresting?
<!-- hidden message --!>
Nope, no fun stuff in chat @HeatherBrown ;p

12:36 AM
@Mateo Decided to stop on the webapp "part" of the card game thing for a bit and move over to the back end. So, I have a dummy dbus server/client and I'm working on turning the CLI standalone into a client and server pieces. That way, I can run "test games" against the dbus server/game logic separately from the flask app

hiya Lucio

Everything goody there Andrew?

Generally stuff is going well.

cool

12:44 AM
And for your daily dose of humor... meanwhile the Oregon militia:

@Lucio how goes it with you?

@hbdgaf I wish so hard to understand that
@hbdgaf I'm in a only body mood. My mind is set for the next challenge so everything is going fast.
but good

@Lucio Oregon trail game from old. You have run out of "resource XYZ". In Oregon, some local self proclaimed "militia" occupied a bird sanctuary, and ran out of food. Their demands to the negotiator started with snacks...

ha ha
@Seth we are rocking out there!
@hbdgaf and that reminds me that I stored snacks somewhere in the kitchen..
I don't know if I've already told you this, so bear on me. I'm going to Europe this year

From Brazil to Europe? iirc Brazil.

Mmmm..
Oh
No, but don't worry. You're not too much wrong.

12:53 AM
We've had that conversation before, I just don't remember.

So yeah, Europe, that place where I never been and still I hope to be there a lot.

I went to Europe for a short time in HS. Didn't get to do a multi-country tour. Just Italy. Would be nice to just go backpacking across Europe or around NZ.

Nice, I enjoyed Italy, went there once for a class

@hbdgaf ikr
I am going to retire from computer for a time, start with a new language in a new community in a new etc.

@Mateo was interesting for me. I have a little piece of the sistine chapel somewhere. They were doing a reno, and I picked up a piece of cracked rock/plaster that fell out of one of the walls.
@Lucio I don't want to start over again. It would just be nice to get a couple years ahead on my meager bills (very low) and just take a year long sabbatical.

12:57 AM
That sounds so awesome, there is so many history
@hbdgaf How was the people alike to you there? for you too Mateo

I'ld like to do 6 months in Europe and 6 months in Asia/India

Yeah, quite a place

@Lucio The only thing I didn't like was the lack up public toilets and the prevalence of pickpockets/gypsies.

I here there is a good Ubuntu community there

Otherwise, it was quite nice.

12:59 AM
@hbdgaf oh, yeah had to go on the street once...

@Mateo My body didn't adjust to local bacteria well, and I couldn't aim at the pipe, so I had to pay double for a ladies toilet

lol, sorry that's funny

It is quite funny. Don't be sorry. I can laugh at it now, but it the moment, I was quite horrified.

@hbdgaf I don't get completely that idea. Do you mean that you would save some money and do it later or you mean if younger..

@Lucio I would still do it when I can.

1:02 AM
Ok

Ha, I remember one train station had a automatic pay toilet - put coins in and open the door, was decked out like a shower, didn't think about it till exiting, one the door closed again it started cleqning its self like a dishwsher

@Lucio is glad he's not married or has children

xD
@Mateo that sounds tricky, crazy idea

@Mateo Yeah, I was more off the beaten path. Just pipes sticking up from the floor unless you were using the ladies room. That had a proper throne. I won't make a mess I wouldn't want to clean up... or have to buy new pants.
Funny story. Some of the people that came with us tried a little off the tour sight seeing, fell asleep on the train, and woke up in Austria.

haaaaa
That's one of the reasons I'm going. You have the chance to meet so many places so easily once there. It blows my mind

1:07 AM
Yeah, cultural differences are so spread out in the US, it's hard or expensive to get from one to another. It's a much faster transition in other places.

@hbdgaf I think something was corrupt, but I think it was something with the directory itself, since I had deleted all the configs before and it didn't work. I also just copied back in what I had copied out.

The thing that makes it interesting for me is that some of Europe is so forward thinking, but with so much history, that it's like going forward and backward in time at the same time...
@Zacharee1 permissions then probably.

They were set to 777 (idc about security enough :p). Interestingly, the new folder was with default permissions (660?), and worked perfectly.

Well, +x to some ~/.xconfig area at one point used to hose the total X11 system, so more lenient permissions can sometimes screw things...

Hmm. Maybe, although the other servers are at 777 too. I guess it's always possible. Ubuntu does mess up in the strangest ways

1:17 AM
777 is overkill, no real reason to set it that

Not really an Ubuntu question, but how do I see the last 'n' messages posted to any SE site?

@Zacharee1 the +x bug was on fedora a long time ago...

1:35 AM
@Mateo what would you recommend instead? I need to be able to write to the files using SSH (so no GUI root).

Q: Why shouldn't /var/www have chmod 777

Luis AlvaradoWhen developing a page on a localhost, I sometimes get a "Permission denied" error which I can solve by running chmod -R 777 /var/www. However, people are telling me that this is a bad idea for security reasons. Why shouldn't /var/www have a chmod of 777?

o/
@Mateo If I understand your question correctly, yes.
It can will be able to pull directly from a Bazaar or Git repository.
It's all still an idea in my head with an "under construction" page :P

1:55 AM
@chili555 You around?

2:09 AM
@NathanOsman sweet, that would be epic

@NathanOsman UGH!
I hope that was a CSS error.

I'm betting it was.
The other text on the page is centered too.

I'm not really a fan of centring period.

Speaking of web design, can someone take a look at my site and give me some suggestions?
Wow
If you guys ever need the chat to slow down, just ask me to say something. People will stop posting for a while.

sorry. going to sleep :)

@kashish hi

@Ravan hello :)

my windows profile corrupted, idk how, I need to replace now
@kashish why ? o_O
"I don't think it that good for beginners"
not constructive
and opinion based

@Ravan giving so much downvotes to someone who has come first time on askubuntu is rude and the person is not likely to return.

@kashish this also opinion base ;p

5:19 AM
@Ravan the question should have been closed gracefully.
haha maybe

@Zacharee1 I'm back now.
What am I supposed to look at?

@NathanOsman hi

@NathanOsman can you think of some way by which I can start apache2 server on demand, like first request from browser with address 'localhost' rather than starting it on boot?

That's a very good question.

@NathanOsman hello

7:11 AM
@Mitch hello.

Do you have nitroshare for android?

Not yet :)

@NathanOsman is there anyway I can trigger some script when some specific url is entered in browser?

@edwardtorvalds Like a "mini" HTTP server?

@NathanOsman server? NO, because I want to start it on some action

7:12 AM
I'm afraid I don't know how to do that.

there must be some network component that handles it
OR what software redirect browsers url request?

@NathanOsman Any idea when?

@Mitch Afraid not.

k

@edwardtorvalds What is it exactly you are trying to do?

7:15 AM
start apache2 server when I enter localhost in browser :)

You might need to ask a question on the site for that one.

Q: start apache2 server (on demand) when I enter 'localhost' in browser

edward torvaldsHow can I start apache2 server on demand by entering localhost or local IP address (192.168.*) of my computer in my browser? This is opposed to starting it on boot. I am using Arch Linux, so I think maybe it is possible using with systemd's help? or any other ways is also welcomed...

@NathanOsman let me put it in another way... is there any software running background that knows what websites I am visiting?

It depends.
Your browser probably logs this information somewhere.
Using something external to your browser would allow you to intercept HTTP requests.
It wouldn't work for HTTPS though.

ok
NetworkManager has its own dns resolver or does it require dhcpcd or netclt?

8:01 AM
bye
@NathanOsman still here?
I guess no

Q: disabling the touchpad tapping to click on Ubuntu14.04

Kalamalka KidI have a Logitech keyboard that has a touchpad installed and want to disable mouse clicks with touchpad feature, as it seems to be over sensitive and keep opening up folders and links on its own. I'm wondering how to disable this feature in Ubuntu 14.04 ? Here is a list of things I have already ...

kos
Hi @edwardtorvalds o/. Sorry, no idea

@kos hi

@edwardtorvalds xinetd?

ok
@A.B. xinetd looks only for incoming connection right?

@edwardtorvalds But what's your goal

11:23 AM
@A.B.
start apache2 server (on demand) when I enter 'localhost' in browser

@edwardtorvalds Yes, but why?

kos
Hi @Ravan o/

@A.B. I rarely need apache2 server but when I need it 'I really need it to be up', so I dont want it to be started on boot

Is there any reputation restrictions to cast reopen vote for own questions? @jokerdino

@edwardtorvalds The server consumes almost no resources.

11:25 AM
@Ravan Same as close votes

@A.B. yeah but I would like to play with it :)

@jokerdino 3k? so my comment is incorrect

For own questions, it should be around 800.

@edwardtorvalds xinetd and inetd doesn't work for Apache2, sorry. My bad

But editing a closed question sends it to reopen queue, doesn't it?

11:27 AM
idk tbh

@A.B. ? really? I thought it was used to start servers in past on demand?

first time I am hearing this, thank you :) @jokerdino

@edwardtorvalds I've never tried this, but Google says: No.

ok
@A.B. have you tried making any service for systemd?

@edwardtorvalds No

11:36 AM
ok
from docs: "Syst emd is a system and service manager for Linux operating systems." What does system mean here?

Q: What should we do when encountering wiki excerpt suggestions on useless tags?

guntbertIn review I got a suggestion for a wiki excerpt, the proposal in itself was not bad (https://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/511060) but the tag bible is quite useless, it has only one question and should be purged in my opinion. @Ravan I can't tell you how thanksfull I am. That login screen was really driving me crazy. I was just 1 step away to quit gnu/linux forever. I really appreciate man. Thanks a lot.

hi panda :)

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Hi! \o :)

@ParanoidPanda do some magic for this question too
@ParanoidPanda btw, I really liked Kung-fu panda, he is funny :D
@ParanoidPanda can you please reopen that question?

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Sorry, don't have enough rep on that site. :)

how much you have?
at 900 you can click on reopen

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Really, well, it seems I only have 101... :D

3:07 PM
ok
@ParanoidPanda but do you have any idea or answer for it?
@ParanoidPanda I liked the look of gnome 3.18 plus theme of firefox is gnome official :D

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Well, you could monitor when you are connecting to that IP, or localhost and then just start the server. There are many ways of doing that. A bit of a way round way would be a browser script, or you could just monitor it with a script in your system.

user136984
It depends really on how you want to do it.

@ParanoidPanda no browser script, I want to do it at system level by using some service,

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Well, then it depends on how you want to detect the connection.

@ParanoidPanda any incoming request it can be localhost or my computer local IP address (192.168.*) on port 80 should start apache2 server
@ParanoidPanda what all ideas you have?

user136984
3:19 PM
@edwardtorvalds: If you want to start it upon incoming requests, then you could monitor incoming packets and if you get any on port 80 then start it.

@ParanoidPanda how ? :'(

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Well, I know I definitely asked a question about packet monitoring a while ago so I'm just looking for that because it gives the program name you use (as I can't remember it)...

@ParanoidPanda some humour... what did touch command said to itself?

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: I don't know, what? :D

3:22 PM
@ParanoidPanda it says: "I cannot touch myself'
touch /bin/touch
touch: cannot touch ‘/bin/touch’: Permission denied

user136984
:D

Oh we have Isaac Newton here :D

:D

user136984
Right, sorry, @edwardtorvalds I have to do some work now, maybe @Seth can help you? :)

user136984
Sorry, something just came up.

3:25 PM
nope, I have to get work done and then run out of the house, sorry :/

3:39 PM
@Seth thank you.

4:07 PM
Hello guys!
quick question
If i want to install ubuntu onto my computer from a usb, do I have to partition it before I insert the usb?

@pingOfDoom if what you install it to already has an OS yes you need to partition before you start. Otherwise you can use the installer to format and partition

2 hours later…
5:39 PM
@pingOfDoom the installer should be able to partition
did you use a program to create a bootable USB?

@kos answered the alias q ;-) that last method made me giggle :+)

Don't you just love it when your website's favicon stops working?

5:55 PM
I hate muru @kos @Serg :=D

whoa there

6:10 PM
lol

kos
6:34 PM
@Rinzwind You said you had a solution to make that non circumventable but I have yet to see it :D

6:46 PM
Hi people, is it me or is it a boring day?

@kos that's why I posted the next comment >:)

@JacobVlijm of course it's you!
(why even bother asking???) :D :D :D ;-)
shutdown -h now
C U guys in an hour or so!

Hi @Fabby, going already? Like your avatar :)

Gonna Upgrade to the latest! and greatest? of Ubuntu...soon...
Naah, nvm. LTS is a better choice

user136984
How does one make a command be run on startup in systemd?

6:58 PM
@ParanoidPanda MAAAAAAAAAAGICCCCCC

user136984
@Zacharee1: Ok, and what are the magic words? :D

@ParanoidPanda idk
@blade19899 if you make soon be a few months, then the latest and greatest will be LTS :p
@blade19899 14.04 may be the better choice unless you have one of those 6th gen i7s.
Or whichever
@ParanoidPanda I actually would like to know this too. I have a startup script that executes certain commands to start stuff like TeamViewer and SSH, but it never works

user136984
@Zacharee1: Well, I've asked a question here on it.

user136984
:)

user136984
@Zacharee1: I can't believe that I'm the first to ask it though, there must have been someone before that I just didn't find. Either that, or just very strange because someone on AU should have done...

7:12 PM
I'll go star it

Quick question:
I installed CentOS minimal(server) in virtualbox, got Apache, PHP and such to work, but, how do I connect to that apache webpage from my current webbrowser?
When I installed apache on on my Ubuntu machine, I can go to localhost/127.0.0.1 and see the apache webpage

user136984
@blade19899: I don't know, you could perhaps do some clever folder sharing between the two systems?

How, can I view the apache webpage from CentOS in my virtualbox?
@ParanoidPanda :/
I am learning CentOS, I need it to be like an actual server, so that I can play with it

user136984
@A.B.: Any idea about this by the way? :)

Can someone explain to this guy that in command line password isnt shown ? I tried, he doesn't seem to get it

7:46 PM
@Serg maybe Russian better indeed! :D

@Fabby ^_^ ' ' ' I started with Russian , but that guy didn't acknowledge me

(or he gets a login loop)
yeah just noticed...

How are you today, by the way ? @Fabby

:) I'm OK...
Do you like the new facepalm avatar???
@JacobVlijm Thanks! When I saw that picture, I knew I'd found my new avatar!
@Serg and how is your health???

@Fabby you were un- ok? Your avatar is hilarious :)

7:51 PM
No, I wasn't...
Just had to drive to some friends to do cat-sitting...
so off-line in the car as I ran out of credit on my pre-paid phone...

@Fabby Frankly I do like it ! Besides, it has blue background , and blue is one of my fav colors :D

@Fabby so now flat cat :)

Next time I'm in the Tuilleries, I'm goind to find this statue and take my own pic!
@JacobVlijm :D :D :D

My health is . . .ok, i guess. My lower back has discomfort now because i was shoveling snow

Happy fat cat!
@Serg You've got snow?
We got some rain the day before yesterday...

7:53 PM
Yeah ^_^ Snowed yesterday and day before yesterday

It's been a very warm winter: warmest december since 1831 or so...

@Serg where are you?

@JacobVlijm the United States. More precisely, Denver, Colorado.

@Serg Isn't that like skiing territory???

@Fabby technically yes, there's a lot of skiiing resorts because of the Rocky Mountains . . .and in all the 8 years that I've been here, I have not ever gone skiing or snowboarding ^_^ ' ' '

7:57 PM
Have you ever skied? :)

Actually . . . it's 9 years already
no . . .actually, not . . .it will be 9 on the January 21st . . .And no, I've never skiid in my life

Ah, well, then let me tell you: it's boring...
