Okay. This is getting absurd. I think Python is broken...

how did you manage that?

No idea >.<
Literally it seems to be getting stuck on a print statement somehow...

btw, I'm not actually angry, I just thought that demotivator was hilarious and sort of fit the discussion.
@RPiAwesomeness did you make your own __str__ somewhere that's hanging?

I don't believe so...
Nope

sorry about the multiple pings. i was cleaning up formatting.

12:17 AM
:)
Aha
I think I may have found something
Not sure why it never cropped up before though...

kos
@Serg No problem, we'll talk about that in a better moment ;) however yes, it was just to explain why I didn't accept it yet
Enjoy!

Huh...apparently Python updated, wonder if that changed something?

o.O wat
Why so many changes?
I feel like something is broken.
Wait. Atom PPA.
Would that have changed Python things?

12:36 AM
no
Atom is built on Node.js not python.

That's what I thought...
Apparently something changed, and now Python hangs when it tries to print or compare a variable that has nothing in it.

I have no idea how you managed that, but if you say so.

That's so weird...
Why didn't throw an error?

Maybe it's a bug..

jrg
12:38 AM
Have you tried rebooting?
(Hoping you have a backup, and a live USB handy)

Yes, I did.
And I do have a Live USB, but not a too recent backup :P
Okay...for some reason Python is suppressing the NameError error...

jrg
Have you opened a new python session and tried that?

@jrg What do you mean? Close the terminal & open it again? I'm running a python file.

jrg
Open a new terminal
run 'python'
it'll open the repl
run something to see if it nameerrors.

Ah, I see. Well, I ran this:
if var1 == 'None':
	print ('test')
And it NameErrored.
Sooooo...somehow my script is suppressing the error I guess.
Except I have no except statements anywhere...
Probably should have some, but I don't.

jrg
12:45 AM
version?
well of course

jrg
var1 is undefined

Obviously

jrg
it is supposed to nameerror

That's exactly what's going on in my code, only it's not name-erroring.
	print ('Reach checkCMD()')

	print ('msg:\t',msg)

	"""
	This loop goes through the message. If there is a link in the message, then it will show up every second
	part of the message.

	When there *is* a link, it won't have any text for the current part of the message, so use the "data" key
	of the current part of the message.
	"""

	for i in range(0, len(msg['message'])):
		if i % 2:		# Every 2 messages
			curItem += msg['message'][i]['text']
		else:
			curItem += msg['message'][i]['data']

	if len(curItem) >= 1:	# Just make sure it's an actual message

jrg
12:46 AM
wait, you're saying that you're doing something, and it should be name erroring?

Well, that's what I thought it would do because I hadn't properly implemented it yet
^^ Is the code (ignore the horrible-ness) of it
And it won't run, needs a lot of files

jrg
maybe it got stuck before it got to that part

/me shrugs

jrg
in a loop, perhaps.
i've seen that happen.

Yeah...

12:48 AM
forget an i+=1 anywhere? that happens... more than you would expect

heh, ikr. No, I don't think that's it - there aren't any of those types of loops being used here.
I added a goingToReturn = '' and it works now....
Apparently it just wanted the variable to be declared?

also, print() debugging lines for the win. i do it all the time. if i committed every time i put a print("Got here") every time I used it, you would hate to read a commit history on anything I touched

jrg
heh

@hbdgaf I do that, but I know where the issue is happening - just not why it's happening like it is.
I figured it would NameError, but it isn't, which is making debugging a pain

3.4 does nameerror on print an undefined variable.

12:51 AM
Yeah...don't know why it isn't for me
But those all seem to be networking things
Bizarre. Well, I figured out how to fix it. Dunno why it's getting stuck...

jrg
I think that you updated your python package while the program was running, right?
if you did that, then it will error. naturally.
you just changed the runtime underneath it!
nothing will really like that...

^ that could be it

@jrg Ooooh...that might've been it...

jrg
and with that, I need to run.
The craizes just show up at the coffeeshop i'm at.

Actually, that's what it probably is. But would that cause things to break like this?

jrg
12:55 AM
and by crazies, i mean apple watch wearers with the new macbooks.

I already rebooted once.
lol

jrg
k later
(20-30 minutes)

But why is it just broken for this one script...that's the weird thing
Reinstall Python?

remove your pyc files... or make an edit to get them to kick to interpret or fix the problem. i don't think python is the problem...

Nope, that didn't do it.
So, it has to do with variables being none
But why...

1:01 AM
@hbdgaf I've accidentally committed plenty of those types of statements to version control before.
They are immediately followed by a "Removed accidental debug statements." commit message.

heh :)

:)
Hey... I should create a pre-commit hook to check for those...

There's something about this script that's freezing when a print() or len() statement is printing or comparing a variable equals ''...
I am so confused

@NathanOsman I more meant if there were one commit for each "Got here", "Got there", "A little further", "Where the actual!!!", "Maybe here", then the commit messages while hilarious would be quite irritating and superfluous.

1:05 AM
Yup. Definitely found what's going wrong.
Does Python store settings for every individual script it runs somewhere?
Because I get the feeling that something may be cached or something incorrectly and is broken...

No... unless .pyc files count.
But that's just bytecode.

Okay. Yeah...
I'm totally confused by this.

The last run/compile is stored in the pyc file header. If you have a ,pyrc in some folder, it might get interpreted if you run in that folder.

I have a __pycache__ folder...

That's just a pile of pyc files and the like. Not relevant.

1:06 AM
Yeah

Also... Python 3 uses something else... I think a __pyc__ directory or something.

Otherwise, no .pyc files
@NathanOsman Is that system-wide?

It's in the same directory as the source files, I believe.
AFK.

k, nothing then

in other news, why did hulu think they needed to get a more Denny's like logo?

1:10 AM
Well...sudo apt-get install --reinstall python3.4 python3.4-dev didn't help :P
Let's try another reboot
That didn't help. Crap.
I think I broke my Python for this script somehow.
Ah, whatever. I'm going for a run.

@Helio That will fail on filenames with newlines or backslashes. Use %P\0 and while IFS= read -r -d '' file to fix it.

@terdon: Smokedetector se equivocó, no? O me equivoqué yo. En la respuesta de Droidstan no he visto nada ofensivo.

Well, it works good. :)

@Terrance: I know that works ;-) but I want a opinion about styling/simplification.

@Helio You could use bc like

echo "obase=2; $number" | bc
read -p "Number to convert: " number
echo "obase=2; $number" | bc

@Terrance: But this uses bc ;-)

I'm trying to improve my answer to kos's question on reliable methods of tracking last known connection to the internet
with other strings it didn't work, this seems to be right
@A.B. how's this > awk '/dhclient: bound/ ' /var/log/syslog

@Serg: What is the problem?

@Serg this is the output I got:

Jun 26 11:01:42 terrance-Linux dhclient: bound to 10.238.97.138 -- renewal in 159320 seconds.

@Helio basically kos wants to know what is the most reliable way to check last time the machine has connected to the internet. If you get that message dhcp boud to ipaddress, it means you got interwebs :)
I have an answer already, but i don't like that it's related to NetworkManager. What if somebody is using wicd ?

Q: How can I reliably check which is the last time an Ubuntu machine has been connected to the internet?

kosHow can I reliably check which is the last time an Ubuntu machine has been connected to the internet? In case this is not possible, a way to check the last time an Ubuntu machine has been connected to a network would be good enough.

@Serg I really like this answer here, as that was the time that the DHCP Client obtained it's IP address from the server makes enough sense to me. The only problem I can see is if they have static IPs, then this will not show that time.

6:06 PM
Very true
It would be great if someone with static ip tested some of the solutions.

I would love to, but at work they won't let me. :(

Another log message that i've found is Jun 26 15:51:13 anaconda NetworkManager[877]: <info> (usb0): DHCPv4 state changed preinit -> bound
nope, also not reliable
i found multiple messages like that

6:24 PM
@Serg: I'll beat my privacy: I'll post syslog ;-)

what ?
@Helio it's alright, we can always cross check ideas in the chat

I can't sent the full syslog, how can i use xclip?

i'm starting to think there's really not reliable way
forget it, @Helio, it's alright
dhcp lease must be renewed every now and then, so there's plenty of dhcp messages there in the logs.
the nework-manager way i posted in my answer, depends on network-manager

I can't send

@Serg Yep, you're right, there is no reliable then.

Q: Ubuntu ugrade to 15.04 grub2 bash

jd943bdI had Ubuntu 14.04.2LTS and, today, I decided to execute the big update to Ubuntu version 15.04. I opened up the terminal and I typed: do-release-upgrade. Ubuntu started upgrading and, during the unpacking of a package, it suddenly rebooted and I saw the grub2 bash line. Why this happened and ho...

@Serg just showing that mine returned:

grep -iR "link is up" /var/log/kern.log

Jun 26 12:34:50 terrance-Linux kernel: [ 5.440518] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None
I just rebooted my system to test that.

@Terrance Awh. I'll just dive in the documentation

@blade19899 I might still remember some things about it.

@Terrance I got the new yosemite server app?

@blade19899 My macbook is at home right now. I can install that later.
It is running Yosemite on it.

@Terrance Yaay. I need to be somewhat knowledgeable about Mac Os X server!
Thanks you!

@blade19899 when I worked at the movie studio, that is all they had were XServers running Mac OS X Server. They worked well and were actually quite easy to configure.

7:23 PM
@blade19899: I don't know nothing about it. Sorry.
@Serg: Did you got any good result from my syslog?

@Helio not really.

dhcp is also not quite useful
Pretty old article, from April , but hot-dang, Windows thinks about making its own Linux distro ? mind = blown

I have a partition 20GB in-which I install Ubuntu..... I want more space for Ubuntu.... I want clone or something better than clone. I want clone as well as increase capacity of drive. what I do? I use dd cp commands. but not works.(when source>destination). Also can it possible make copy data if (source>destination) [source contain data <Destination size] Ex. source 20 gb ..contain data 5gb destination 15 gb fresh partition. can I make clone of or copy of data source into destination.
plz help me

7:39 PM
well, technically you can. I've head some people use dd to clone partitions. But I don't understand why do you need to clone it, if all you wanna do is resize the existing thing

I unable to resize it ... so i think make clone and format old drive if clone successful..
and i want try it both way.... source<destination>source

@Fabby what are your thoughts on this ^

Q: How to clone Ubuntu into same machine with new partion?

Madhav NikamIn my computer, I want more space for Ubuntu. And for it don't like to format my Ubuntu. How can I copy everything from present Ubuntu and copy everything with user settings etc into other drive? copy everything but i want change drive space. Also I don't want clone entire hard-disk I want clone ...

@Serg: This is a delicate thing ;-/
What about copying all the files on the home (even hidden ones) to the new partition (once the new installation is ready)

If that was me, I'd do in two steps. Clone the drive first, resize later

7:47 PM
@Serg: Good point
I resized the boot partition on a LVM 13.04 in a 1TB disk
Broke up LVM
No backup
Data lost
Oh my!
20GB of comics ;-)
Rescued with R-Linux

@Helio data is data... mo matter how big or small

@MadhavNikam: Do you have a external HDD?

Now that I think of it, I've been playing dangerously with my laptop. I've installed ubuntu without doing any backups, then resized it, again - no backup. Good thing now i have spare hard drives, so i can dd if i need to

only 1 laptop and nothing

What sda do you want to enlarge?

@Terrance As how I have heard it from my co-workers, its not easy anymore, plus the damn thing crashed a couple times.

actually 80 gb for ubuntu
I can delete scienfic linux for ubuntu
and one more drive also delete

@MadhavNikam: What partition (sdaX) do you want to enlarge?

80gb
sda10 ubuntu14

Open GParted
Delete SL (SDA13)

7:58 PM
ok
del
1 min i also want share littel
one more thing....

Now move SDA11 and SDA12 to the RIGHT (the end of the disk)
So is there ONE big unallocated disk space amount

I was try DD and CP commands just for experiment ... I try to make clone of SL sda13 into sda14 but it fails. because sda13>sda14

Once finished the moving, RESIZE the SDA10 to fill the FREE space
Once made this, you should be done.
If works, please tell me it

one more thing sda14 contains current OS
how to resize

8:06 PM
@blade19899 I will take a look at mine later and see what they have done with it.

@Helio Gedit? xD I stopped using that ages ago!
I write my website by hand! Gedit can't compete with Sublime Text

@blade19899: I don't stopped, now it's great, at least for me.
What features has Sublime that Gedit hasn't

Vi for me

@Helio It has been years since i last used gedit, will give it a try soon.
@Helio D:
Did You just seriously asked that?

@Terrance: I like nano more, i can't handle the vi shortcuts.
@blade19899: I never used Sublime

8:15 PM

@Helio I started with Nano. I have nothing against it. I have learned all the vi shortcuts and just love it now. It is my editor of choice.

@Helio if i delete 10 GB — 9.9 GB free (3.1% full) /dsa12 which is exact near s/da10 20 GB — 1.1 GB free (94.5% full) then problem solve?

Its shows off some of its features

@MadhavNikam: Didn't understood
@blade19899: Not opensource, I'm a purist.

@Helio ITs an awesome tekst editor nonetheless
But, did you get the Gedit Dashboard to work?

It is not working since for ever

@MadhavNikam: Please post GParted screenshot, is more clear

@MadhavNikam: Gparted is not disk utility, search it in the dash from a live USB/CD
I'll go now and return in 1/4 hour approx and then view your messages, respond if possible and go to sleep.

@Helio FIX for gedit-dash: askubuntu.com/a/120414/36315

not fount gparrted

@MadhavNikam: In LIVE USB/CD it must be installed, if not, install it.
@blade19899: Thanks.

8:23 PM
how?

@Helio Fix is not working for me :(

@blade19899 I think that one is to make gedit run from the dash. Not get the dashboard running in gedit.

@Terrance I'm an idiot.
I gotta start reading before I paste commands in to my terminal XD

@blade19899 No you're not. I think there is a misunderstanding here.

@Terrance Thinks so too.
LOL Asked about this 3 years ago, and it is still not working xD

Q: gedit-dash not working anymore

blade19899I followed this tutorial on getting Gedit dash installed but for some reason it doesn't work anymore. I wrote a silent script that does everything automatically: cd /tmp sudo apt-get -y install python-pygments wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7162902/gedit-dash.tar.gz mkdir -p ~/.local/share/gedit/p...

Completely forgot about this xD

8:28 PM
Looks like the file is no longer available to get the gedit-dash working. :(

Now I remember, the guy just copy/paste from my own blog post: eurobytes.nl/tutorials/…

@Helio sorry i make mistake during screenshot

I was very interested in that gedit-dash, but the plugin can't be downloaded. :(

@Terrance gedit-plugins
install that!

8:37 PM
@blade19899 OK, installed. Looking for the plugin to copy now.

@Terrance No need to copy anything.
Just go to preference -> plugins

@blade19899 Hmmmmm, mine still looks the same. Maybe I am missing something.

and enable dashboard
You have to enable the plugins,
And, the dashboard plugin is not working.
Gonna compile the latest gedit to see if it works then

@blade19899 go for it and let me know. :)

@Terrance cool

8:44 PM
@blade19899 I found it on mine, and it is not working either. So, yeah, I am looking forward to see if you get it working. :)

@Terrance I'm running 14.04, don't have the latest library to compile gedit, but gonna try it out on my 15.04 under virtualbox

@blade19899 OK

@ByteCommander: OP has an answer to his question... ;)
@MadhavNikam Isn't the answer you got on your Q good enough?
(if not: leave a comment there)

@MadhavNikam: You need to make a puzzle to put sda10 just beside at the left of the big free space, and then resize it.
BE CAREFUL All your data is pending of a thread ;-)
