YeY! My portuguese seems good :)

Am I like the only person that actually likes the look of swing?

lol, yeah
@hbdgaf that remains me the film of Chaplin xD
Lol, this is pretty funny:

@terdon Wait so that's our problem? :P

12:22 AM
@Seth No, the "you" was not "you AU people", it was "you U&L people".

Q: Creating Menu list and Executing the Task

YanI was given the the Task to create a menu in Linux but it appears it's not coming out great. When I select something I want to be able to perform that task than go back to the main menu when I finish. Sorry I'm a newbie so please forgive me !/bin/bash PS3='What do you want to do day: ' options=...

@terdon I fixed it for you ;)
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L OKEY, what we were talking about?

@Braiam You're too slow apparently :)

Awesomesauce.

1:53 AM
BOOM!
o/ eric

hey ho. what's going on tonight?

Here? Solving academic issues

such as?

Not able to pass a subject

academic as in doesn't really matter or as in I'm being graded on this so I gotta get it right?

1:57 AM
academic == my college

ouch. what subject?

Advanced programming

?! you're an advanced coder.

lol
coder != programmer ;)

lol. guess you're right.

1:59 AM
@Lucio This is true.

Email solved problem, hurray
Admin personal is.. stupid. No matter what industry or complexity of tasks, they're slow

and the more they computerize, the worse it gets ;) It's all those advanced coders.

this is a lack of computerization issue
they need to put a cron job running on a server write a trigger so I don't need to write a delayed email
@chaskes how were/are your college days like?

Well, I majored in philosophy and didn't use anything but a typewriter until graduate school.
and if the library closed before I was finished researching, I was done researching.

haha
Well, that sounds like a major feat to me.
It's crazy to be able to learn something new at any time using your cellphone.

2:12 AM
cell phone? we had phones on the wall and on the table. Only millionaires had phones in their pockets.

hah, right

things are pretty awesome now. I didn't really get into programming until I could look up syntax online and the editor had highlighting. finding the missing semi-colon before that was brutal.

ouch, I didn't think about that

@chaskes uhhhh. yeah.

@Seth it's all true. @nathan-osman knows what I'm talking about (I think).

2:19 AM
> I set up my server manually and am pretty happy with it. It's been a job of months
O_O

awesome.

what does he mean by "manually"?

what kind of server?

Don't even him knows it
LAMP

Q: Is there a way to set up zPanel or webmin without uninstalling LAMP first?

felwitheI set up my server manually and am pretty happy with it. It's been a job of months, chipping away at it every day, and at this point I don't want to reinstall LAMP. But all server management software that I've looked into, like zPanel and webmin, require a fresh install of everything-- apache, my...

@chaskes I started out just using notepad.. Bugs were awwwwwwwwwwful.

2:20 AM
NOTEPAD?! ARE YOU KIDDING?!

@Seth oh, yeah, me too. notepad for C, notepad for Java. I made a huge Java app only in notepad.

oh my lord, my ears are hurting

then I found out about notepad++. Then I switched to Linux :)

@Lucio Ok, I get it now.

2:24 AM
@Seth I remember reading a newspaper article that a new company named Redhat was forming around Linux. I still kick myself for not getting involved with Linux then.

and you mean physical newspaper ;)

@Lucio LOL. yes!

newspapers are something I could never read digitally.
I even prefer real books.

yeah, but a book remains useful after 1 week

I like book books and e-books equally well based on the use case. but when reading an e-book, I really insist on e-ink, not a tablet, for fiction.

2:29 AM
I have nothing against ebooks, but I prefer real books. Especially when it comes to programming.

oh gosh

yeah, ebooks are not as good for programming. and I have a huge amount of real books, btw.

Great, so Google Drive don't let you use 100% functionality if not Chrom* ¬¬

@Lucio that's why I'm getting fed up with google apps.

2:33 AM
hi there nat

What's up?

huh, I was just pinging you ;)

@NathanOsman Blue sky down here.

It's painfully hot up here.

Still 28.5 here :-/

2:35 AM
We have two AC units at the office and running both trips the overcurrent protection.

No AC here :(

(What some might refer to as "blowing a fuse.")

oh, you're on summer

It's still 25 degrees when I go to bed at ~10:00/10:30, which is painfully hot around here.
@Lucio oh you're in the southern hemisphere aren't you?

Hey it's 36° C in here right now. And humid.
Stop complaining :P

2:37 AM
:( I miss the hot sun

@NathanOsman Yikes! Somehow I knew you would have it worse :P

@NathanOsman argh, worst case scenario to wake up from bed

Oh it cools off a lot overnight.
It's not bad in the morning.

What is "cooled off" up there?

Ok, I found a C/F converter...

2:39 AM
@Seth Maybe 26° :)

@NathanOsman Seriously? Ouch.

You get used to it.

hehe, the only time I've been able to get used to it was when I was in California and it was 43 outside. Then 28 felt cool.

xD
AMD computers don't survive there

@Lucio So it's not safe to install in legacy mode there? (see psusi's comment on askubuntu.com/questions/498805/…) :)

@chaskes lol
great statement

@Seth I've been indoors when it hit 40°. Not fun.

@NathanOsman Indeed!

@Seth good tip, thanks.

or I guess vice versa in this case.
I always make sure my temps are in C when I post them in global places like this, even though I don't think Celcius makes any sense.

2:49 AM
Yeah, everyone knows Kelvin is superior.

It's true we're the non-metric minority, but I like the greater range of F

Greater range?

Finer granularity?

Q: When selecting from the Menu not able to Perform task?

KrupIs there a way to automatically create users, delete users, create groups and delete groups once I selected a task? Also Why im not able to perform any of those task once I select the task I want to perform but instead I'm getting prompt to enter your selection when I choose a task? !/bin/bash ...

@chaskes Exactly. I like most of the metric system, just not celcius.

2:50 AM
It's the most confusing scale there is :)

@NathanOsman cough seeing as I invented it cough. ;)

I saw that coming...
I spent the second half of today trying to set up a VPN at work.
Man, I didn't realize that most VPN solutions are highly centralized.

<3 Cº

@NathanOsman plus, we were always taught C stops at 100. :)

north people flagging that comment

3:09 AM
@chaskes That's just the temperature water boils at sea level.

@NathanOsman Yeah, was a joke about how we don't really learn Celsius.

I can make jokes about how can't I get Fareng(h)eits
finally this 8º revision will be final...
Why do I always think that it will be working at the first try?

@NathanOsman Ok, finer granularity without needing a decimal mark...

In fact, Celcius decimal is not counted
and as a normal person you don't need granularity :)
5º is exactly the same than 6º

lol. (still trying to salvage the above comments) exactly. we like to think we can feel the difference between 5 and 6 or 72 and 73.

3:21 AM
haha, yeah

man, package for package, opensuse seems to always take forever to upgrade.

I never user it :\

This issue has been making me rethink using it.

why did you started using it?

just cause it's a major distro and to feel even more geeky.

3:27 AM
heh, I take the second choice

maybe I need to find a different mirror. I think they must throttle the main one.

what about yumi fedora?

I've come to really like Fedora, most of the time. Sometimes it's a little rough around the edges and the forums/AskFedora are kinda mean.

Q: Why is getattr() throwing an exception when an attribute doesn't exist?

Nathan OsmanThis one has me baffled. Consider the following Django models - representing zookeepers and the cages at the zoo that they are responsible for cleaning: class Zookeeper(moodels.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=40) class Cage(models.Model): zookeeper = models.ForeignKey(Zookeep...

Weird enough to warrant a question on Stack Overflow.

@NathanOsman add the python and django version
I think am going to sleep
can't find a reason not to by now :S

Q: please migrate this question

lionI think this question should be in this stack. is it?

Hey is anyone on?

kinda

@NoTime How are you good with BIOS settings and stuff like that, and kernals?

BIOS I am fine with. Are you asking about terminal? Kernel I am unsure what you mean

Linux Kernel

4:44 AM
I mean what are you doing with it?
Like changing it?

Well I have a laptop where the touch pad doen't work with Linux after I did the updates

That might be system specific and the best thing may be to check forums for the model you have. It could be drivers as well. Most likely not BIOS

Well It is my sister... My brother did something to the BIOS to get it working on Windows....

I'm guessing that would be UEFI because there are sometimes more settings there.

It is UEFI
I say BIOS out of the habbit when it is UEFI...

4:49 AM
Yeah. Just at the point where they are both kinda common

Yea I like BIOS more

You might be able to check the model and see the settings available with an online manual.

For me it is eazyer to use. and I don't need to worry about miss clicking on something because there is no mouse support in it.
Yea

Its provably a pain but google the model of computer or write down the UEFI version
I would say forums would probably help I gotta go though

Yea my sister is using it with Win 8 right now and hate it but she doen't want to stop what she is doing...

Rhythmbox just won't die! I tried every kill command I could find. Not even kill DASH NINE

@Dan ?? you are trying to close rhythmbox - have you got some music playing before clicking the x button?

Oli
IME when a media player won't die, it's stuck in a uninterruptable state waiting for IO

Dan
lol :P it froze as soon as I opened it. The music didn't even manage to load in the library let alone play.
so i closed and I got the "force quit" dialog
now the process is sitting around and it's parent process is init
so relogging/rebooting is my only option?

logging out and logging should be enough - kill -9 PID or sudo kill -9 PID ?

Dan
@fossfreedom did not work
@Oli ah crap thanks!
I unmounted a connected iPod, it stopped by itself
but why kill -9 won't work?

Oli
1:32 PM
Woot.
That's what uninterruptable means. It won't listen to anything until it's done its IO.

Dan
Awesome, thanks
Thought it was some kind of super zombie process, I should read more about all this stuff

I was going to upgrade from 12.0.4 32-bit to 14.0.4 64-bit but based on what I read online it's better to do a clean install

@JohnMerlino No, he's right. The names are used interchangeably, amd64 basically means x86-64.
x86-64 (also known as x64, x86_64 and AMD64) is the 64-bit version of the x86 instruction set. It supports vastly larger amounts of virtual memory and physical memory than is possible on its predecessors, allowing programs to store larger amounts of data in memory. x86-64 also provides 64-bit general purpose registers and numerous other enhancements. The original specification was created by AMD, and has been implemented by AMD, Intel, VIA, and others. It is fully backwards compatible with 16-bit and 32-bit x86 code. Because the full x86 16-bit and 32-bit instruction sets remain imple...

Oli
@JohnMerlino Yeah don't try cross-arch upgrades. You'll end up with a server in flames. Plus it's a good opportunity to take stock of what's running (and whether that's still the best way to do it) on a server and redeploy.

user3776671Why can I access to my C: or D: drives from Ubuntu when I install Ubuntu 14.04. Why does this happen? Thanks
