How can I run more that one command in custom shortcut ?
I want to launch both chromium-bowser and firefox with a shortcut key. I tried also ';' semicolon between them but didn't work. Is it possible? or any workaround? Thanks

1:57 PM
@KasiyA create a script and execute the script?

Yes, For Execution by direct command this is helpful and thanks @Rinzwind for your "/usr/local/bin" recommendation

2:22 PM
@Pandya i hate that downvoter :=)

2:33 PM
@Rinzwind Thanks about that but why it IS not possible to run directly there?
And Is there a way to call my another shortcut key command with a shortcut key? I mean create a shortcut key to call my another shortcut key.
One shortcut key call another shortcut

@KasiyA Because that runs a command and not a shell. The && is a shell construct. The run dialog presumably uses Gnome Shell (or whatever the unity equivalent) which is not a shell like bash despite the name and its Gnome Shell that launches the command.
@KasiyA What's a "shortcut" for you?
Oh, one of those. OK, you need to write a little script as rincewind told you.

@terdon ahum! ce? z!
weeee another silver badge :=)

@terdon @Rinzwind thank you both.
then also this 'gnome-terminal -e "first command" ; "next command"' is not possible too?

2:53 PM
@Rinzwind Damn, sorry!
@KasiyA Yup, for the same reason. ; is also a shell operator.

Then I can run just and just one command via custom shortcut? yes

Im getting this message: N: Unable to locate package xdg-open
when running apt-cache policy xdg-open
any ideas why?

@KasiyA No, you can run as many as you like, just put them in a script and have the shortcut run your script.

It seems that the program is already installed. I guess it's installed by default and not in repository

xdg-open should come default.

3:02 PM
It does but why does apt-cache policy not know about it

I'm not sure it is a package itself.

$ dpkg -S xdg-open
xdg-utils: /usr/bin/xdg-open
xdg-utils: /usr/share/man/man1/xdg-open.1.gz

There we go :-)

@JohnMerlino look for xdg-utils instead.

Yes it recognizes xdg-utils
So dpkg is more broad than apt-cache policy

3:06 PM
Apt-cache policy only works with what you give it.

@JohnMerlino No, that particular command returns the name of any packages that include the pattern passed.

You gave it a non existent package.

Try apt-cache policy *xdg*

Or apt-cache search xdg-utils

^^

3:17 PM
@terdon thank you +=much ;) I mean run command directly not in script.

@KasiyA No, because of the shell issue. But it's trivial to make a script work. Just create a file called ~/run_browsers.sh with these two lines in it:
chromium-browser &
firefox &
Then, make a shortcut that runs bash /home/yourname/run_browsers.sh

@terdon Thanks for the edit ;-) askubuntu.com/questions/534494/…

@Rmano No problem, I know how annoying it is to get your languages mixed up :)
That was a very clever trick by the way.

@terdon Thankx do you have time I ask you one question more?

@terdon thanks. Used ages ago on raw images from a very old scanning electron microscope...

3:34 PM
morning
oh, seth is gone
:(

By default 'sudo' prompt me to input my user password for three time if I input wrong password. Then how can I change it to unlimited times(?); then that ask me my pass until I enter correct password. thank you.
@terdon

@hbdgaf I can't confirm whether it is working due MTU or heuristic effects, but for that I thank you
I also learned a new thing :)
@LuisAlvarado around?
Beside the fact that this should be killed with fire, a @mod should remove the comments there. Remember to remove mine too

3:55 PM
user killed it himself.

@KasiyA Don't know off the top of my head. That might be configurable in sudoers. Why not post a question?

@Seth o.o
ok,
thanks for look

@terdon ASKED as question askubuntu.com/questions/534868/…

@KasiyA I answered. I didn't know but all it took was a quick look through man sudoers.

what happens if you change it to 0 ;p

4:13 PM
@Mateo Huh, it completely breaks sudo! You run sudo foo and nothing happens. No prompt, no output.
Very glad I opened a root session before testing that :)

yikes, so it does as expected then

Yes :)
Don't try it at home and all that.
oops I changed it to passwd_tries= and now I can not open again sudo visudo even I can not run any commands with sudo or gksu and gksudo ;( — KasiyA 1 min ago
facepalm
@KasiyA you just royally screwed up your system. You need to boot into a live session, mount your disk, open the file manually and remove that line.
Never, ever, ever play with sudoers without having an open root session that will let you fix things again.

couldn't he reboot to runlevel 2 and fix it from there?

@Seth Yes, that too.

@KasiyA Follow the steps here to get a recovery shell: askubuntu.com/questions/24006/…
and then fix it from there.

4:28 PM
That is why I just live with just the up arrow

hm?

@Mateo That your sudo password?

Oh, for what it's worth, I meant runlevel 1 (I couldn't remember which was single user mode, so I just guessed ;P)
btw, saw this on zdnet, nice read: zdnet.com/…

@terdon Nah, to redo the command if I type wrong

@Seth Ubuntu has changed the default runlevel names. I never remember how they set it up.

4:44 PM
@terdon We only changed one thing, actually.
The term runlevel refers to a mode of operation in one of the computer operating systems that implement Unix System V-style initialization. Conventionally, seven runlevels exist, numbered from zero to six; though up to ten, from zero to nine, may be used. S is sometimes used as a synonym for one of the levels. Only one "runlevel" is executed on bootup - run levels are not executed sequentially, i.e. either runlevel 2 OR 3 OR 4 is executed, not 2 then 3 then 4. "Runlevel" defines the state of the machine after boot. Different runlevels are typically assigned to: single-user mode multi-user mode...
(clicking that will take you to the Debian/Ubuntu section)
ok, two things maybe.

I just remember things are different, not the details :)

haha, so do they all.

@terdon i'm gonna learn Perl. Could you recommend me a best book...

@AvinashRaj The O'reilly ones tend to be excellent. oreilly.com/perl
This one is the classic:
And the author is very active on both Stack Overflow and English Language & Usage.

4:59 PM
Who?

Two of the authors actually. On SO at least

5:01 PM
He has the annoying habit of being far, far more knowledgeable than I on two completely different subjects that I'm interested in :)

English and that other useless language.

@jokerdino Actually, his Spanish and French are probably better than mine too :)
Not to mention portuguese, latin or ancient greek.

yeah, let's not talk about all those things.

i own him at speaking dutch though :=)

I'm extremely good at wasting a helluva time.
@Rinzwind do you also speak german/swedish?

5:05 PM
@jokerdino dutch english german, did 3 years of french and I know a bit of japanese

Japanese for reading manga?

oh and swedish seemed pretty easy to me ... when I watched the dragon tattoo movies in the cinema I hardly used the subtitles.

japanese from anime and a crash course :=)

I probably would like to pick up another language or so.
@Rinzwind oh that dragon tattoo movie.

@jokerdino try chinese. speaking it is suppose to be easy and might be useful
@jokerdino I do not watch american remakes :=)

@Rinzwind lol. those chinese words have peculiar nuances on sounds. Too hard for me.
@Rinzwind I've heard about the swedish novels/movie.

5:09 PM
if you did not see the movies yet: the swedish ones are b r i l l i a n t.

Righto. Will add it to my todo list.

soooooo system is up and running with all software I need again :-)

@Lucio yeah.

It is... YOU!

5:14 PM

@Rinzwind Did not noticed. Between studying for the Linux Sysadmin certification, moving to another city, looking for work, and doing a course on python and javascript, who has time to cheat.. i mean beat you ^^
@Rinzwind may the best man win (Me obviously)

6:59 PM
I would add in a course in Ruby as well if I were you

Q: quick I need an answer

Nada TaherWrite a Bash shell script that will rename all the files in a directory. It will mostly be useful to rename digital picture files. The first argument is a base name, second argument is a file extension. If it is run as: $ renumber 1stBirtday jpg
