Tom BrossmanHard to come up with a shorter or clearer title, sorry. 'Cannot Upgrade my Ubuntu' was closed as a dupe, and it is. The issue is that the wrong duplicate was chosen by mistake (with possibly none of the other close-voters noticing?). I edited the question after it was closed, so that it now poi...

Q: Linux mint install problem

5spaceI am trying to install Linux Mint (Cinnamon) from a cd. It will act like it is loading for a while, the cd drive will make a ton of noise for a while, and then everything just freezes (the cd drive will go silent). I tried this a few times and then started in "compatibility mode." Everytime, I ge...

@JorgeCastro: so, two things with the vagrant images.
1st, awesome.
2nd, is there some way to get some sort of zsync for the rebuilds?
(that'd require building zsync into vagrant, probably. but it'd be nice.)

Q: A Call to uphold accessibility by not shortening links to "here" when editing a post

guntbertAs far as I see there has been some discussion about the shortening of links. While keeping the complete URL visible in the post can clearly be distracting (especially when used inline), I want to warn against making it too drastic (e.g. "here"). Remember that visually handicapped people often us...

Q: VMWare Unity Mode with Ubunty 12.10

NickThis is a very difficult thing to search for, and find an answer to because of the unfortunate choice VMWare and Ubuntu both having something called "Unity". Q: Blank screen if kids yell too much

Leonid VolnitskyMy kids (4 and 5) yell a lot when playing games on computer. I found an effective cure for this. I ssh into game computer and do: chvt 3; sleep 15; chvt 7 when I hear loud noises. This will turn off screen for 15 seconds on linux. I've told them that computer don't like loud noises. They to...

esp.
One suggestion would be to just program the kids directly. However, some people prefer the indirect route through the computer, which does provide a convenient pre-existing portal. — Carl 21 hours ago

jrg
Kids have to learn to be seen and not heard. I'd dial it down so if the cat meowed or a chair creaked, the screen would go off. — BryanH 22 hours ago

I have one question in the Ubuntu Reg room..

answered.

@Seth I see your comment ;)
the first one

hehe

@Seth I was wandering that for future cases..

I don't think it is a big deal.
it shouldn't be a big deal, in other words.
@Lucio people shouldn't be offended just because someone doesn't like Asus products.

8:34 PM
@Seth haha, agree

stuff like "I HATE ASUS!!!" should go
because that's a rant
though "I HATE APPLE!!!" should be fine :P
jk

@Seth disagree
jk

@Lucio if you're going to kill a whole chunk of text, you should add a reason beyond "Improved Formatting"
@Lucio lol, well, remember that you have the perfect right to disagree with me ;)

@Seth sorry, shrug, If I was going to make a real summary for that, it will be of 3billions of characters :)

You could just say like "removed recursive text" or (I use) "removed unnecessary next" etc

8:42 PM
yeah, I know, I'll remember that for the next time. Thanks for remember me that

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing awesome!

yeah, they had the full "raspi starter kit" by Make for 125. i was all "i'ld be buying a breadboard or breakoutboard for 20 anyway...and i need a power cable...and some batteries". didn't make sense not to get them both

jrg
:D

yeah, I got the one with a basic case, power cord, and pre-made SD card with debian, from MCM

10:09 PM
i was all...wth when they told me they stock arduino in the "gaming" section

what games? like dos style games...

no, like mw3. it made sense when i saw "diy rockets and sumo robots" next to them. it just threw me for a sec

rockets, and robots, this store sounds familiar...

by the way. the make kit case is brilliantly designed for tool-less assembly and efficiency, but you have to be an octopus to put it together by yourself

this is the case I have so far, It's not real sophisticated (ordering a different one) mcmelectronics.com/product/83-14272

10:26 PM
oh i like this case fine, it's just all interlocking parts...so it's a but like trying to assemble a bed frame by yoursef...balance balance click yay...or thump...try again

10:36 PM
@gertvdijk I have a really difficult time following his Q & As, to be honest since they change so much

@maggotbrain yes, I've told him a few times he shouldn't change questions. He was about to change it this time as well... "it doesn't work with PDF files!" yeah.. well.. you asked about text files!
I was ready to hit the rollback button, but he didn't change it this time :)

but not this way you just tried to explain, but not that way either...

@mateo_salta ? sorry, don't get that

his edits... they keep excluding answers

@mateo_salta yes, exactly.

10:40 PM
this is getting really bad...

The first thing he did with his 2000 rep was editing my answer btw.

It seems like he enjoys having an edit war with himself. It's now kind of funny to me

I guess..

what you mean like that "i want to forward traffic" that turned in to "how do i configure squid, but not like that"

heh

@AbrahamVanHelpsing ah yeah that one. :)

Your question changed from a routing/networking question to a Squid HTTP proxy question. This is totally different. I think you'll need a bit more basic IPv4 knowledge here. :) — gertvdijk Jan 24 at 12:48

should we remove prompts from questions/answers?
They tend to just confuse people.

sounds like he's a "tproxy dev"(read rename squid) that doesn't know some things about transparent proxying and nat to me. or some guy they(tproxy) hired to write documentation that decided ubuntu community should write it for him

(first hand experience :P)

the $ sign sutff?

yeah, or #

10:47 PM
Whenever I mix command with output I tend to keep it
otherwise I like to have it GONE

# is to comment out code

yes, # is confusing

@mateo_salta it also stands for root

i wouldn't if it's disambiguation. # or $ can indicate priv level. irox@oryou#ls is probs a little unnecessary though

well, I usually edit them out.
they make my eyes bleed.
but if there where some serious problems with it, I wouldn't (like @gertvdijk mentions)

10:51 PM
yeah, if it if for the prompt remove it. but if you are quoting what the user should see that is a bit diffrrent

it's usually "I ran this, and it didn't work"

This is also a nice one. A guy setting up SNAT in his network of only private addresses!
You've set up Source NAT here. I fail to see why you need that. It's also a bad thing to NAT in private addresses as it's not needed to share IP addresses - you have enough space! You're making spaghetti of your network here. — gertvdijk 10 hours ago

yum, spaghetti.

@Seth You're in WA, aren't you? Can you bring me some? ;-P

lol
Yeah, I'm in WA ;)

11:02 PM
you just reminded me that I have some leftovers to take care of.

@Seth I wanna see Chuck Norris kick vim's butt.

AHG NATTING. WHY?
3
Why NAT when you can IPv6?
2

Because fuck IPv6.

hehe

I knew @FEichinger would say something... just not that :/

jrg
ROFL.

I would vote that answer up.

11:28 PM
@Seth Heheh. That was kinda easy to tell, though.

but really, "What address do I access my router with again?" "Uhm, 2607:f0d0:1002:0051:0000:0000:0000:0004" (random example addresss Google gave me)

jrg
DNS. router.home.jamesrgifford.com

well that's nice..

jrg
or devvm.work.my-employers-domain.tld

I've always used "192.168.100.1"
or 192.168.10.1

11:31 PM
Use the 10. Space. So much nicer and cleaner.

I'm never cleaning my keyboard again ... FFS, now the keys get sticky ...

@jrg I must admit, I really don't understand networking :(

Q: What is K? What is Gnome? What is KDE? What is Ubuntu? Why are some commands started with "k"?

beingalexOk, so I would love to use Ubuntu more. I know it is based on Linux and that is great. However, whenever I search for help regarding certain things for example "themes", I am faced with what I think is GUI questions - is it Gnome or is it KDE? What is Gnome what is KDE? What is the GUI that I am ...

lol?
(make sure you read the whole thing)

but really, how many of us qualify as "Mums and Dads" and how many of us qualify as "Developers"? XD
@FEichinger your links had to be translated from german ;)

I tried to give a comment-answer as humanely as I could ...
@Seth Seriously?
Changed the links.
Who the hell activated German Google here again? -.-
I really hate that. I'm even logged into my bloody Google account. And it still doesn't get it.
I mean, it gives English results for me, but it still uses the German site.
