12:00 AM
Should be as simple as this:
cout <<"Data received: "<<(int)memblock<<"."<<endl;

I can't do that..
My compiler say: the conversion from char to int loses precision*

Wait ... what?
Aaaah, yeh, I was right, the chat just didn't like char * :P

yes.. It is the first time that I see that phrase.. loses precision

Losing precision on a char * is ... interesting :P

@FEichinger I must go for a few minutes..
see you later

12:04 AM
Uhm, basically, to get the 5 printed, you gotta do (int)memblock[?] where [?] corresponds to the actual char containing the bitvalue.
Or just typecast & save every single memblock element until you hit the EOT char and then print them

Everybody is familiar with The IT Crowd I assume?
5

Everyone on the "should-be-asleep" side of the pond should be, yeh. :P

recall the famous "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" part and then watch this:
user image
2
it's like... what?

I love how the error has "4.2" in it.
But that's HP. Their stuff works doesn't work like that.

@FEichinger no it's not working anymore because of this. hehe

12:15 AM
No, one less asterisk.
Or, two actually ...

come back..
@FEichinger I have analysed the memblock array and still no luck..

Hmmm ...
Weird.

It show me 97 at [0] and then hundred of ceros 000000....

Weeeeeeeeeird.

weird? that is nothing
Also at [24], [25], and [26] I get -111, -19 and 1, respectively. and then a lot of ceros 0000000...
so, simple, it doesn't work..

12:26 AM
And you are sure you're still within the memblock?
I mean, you're sure it hasn't ended yet?

I make a FOR from 0 to 350!!
I think it is enough hahaha

... You should only read the variable until you hit the termination character, you know? :P

yeh, yeh, is the same..
I can't believe this situation! With C I could write and read the entirely Bible without problems! :P
But with C++, I can't process even a single INT! haha

Well, my last idea was that perhaps it crashes because you split the int into multiple chars.
But even then it should never ever get 97 as a value. Anywhere.
Ever.
So, I'm at a loss.

and what do you tell me about the char[24] and 25 & 26, that is weird

12:34 AM
Nah.
That's clutter in your memory.
The variable should've ended waaay earlier.
So, whatever's at memblock+24 is not part of memblock.

I don't know why isn't anybody that could tell me "I had wrote thousand of times with C++"
overflow..

Yeh, SO.
yesterday, by FEichinger
I just avoid SO ... It's ... crowded. I don't like crowds.
All I'm sayin' :P

I am noticing that what you say (me too) was wrong..

Hm?

I must pay attention in the read statement:
arc.read(memblock,sizeof(int));
as you can see on my code, after that line I get a fail() error
so is the format in that line what is wrong..
see this documentation:
fail()
Returns true in the same cases as bad(), but also in the case that a format error happens, like when an alphabetical character is extracted when we are trying to read an integer number.

12:45 AM
But doesn't the second arc.fail() return 0?

NO
my comment is wrong hehe
Fully upside
the first fail() returns 0 and the second one returns 1

Well then we gotta choose a whole different angle! :P

sorry

But that requires more in-depth knowledge of arc ... Which I don't have, 'cause I haven't dealt with C++ in ages.
So ... SO!

knowledge of arc no, knowledge of the parameters for the read() function

12:52 AM
**How to read int from binary file?**

I have [this code]. I'm trying to write `DATA` to the binary file, then read the binary file, to test this. However, `arc.fail()` returns `true` after my attempt to read from the file into my `memblock` variable. What am I doing wrong here?

ok..
It seems that all roads lead to the same destination..

1:12 AM
question about ubu-phone. is there a base package list that will be available for libraries?
@JorgeCastro - if there's anyone you know that I can ask about this ^^

@FEichinger Thanks, thanks, thanks!!
It worked

Wait what?
I thought I was wrong?

well, actually you was wrong
NO, I'm kidding!!
you was right!!
Here is the code that really work
As I said, the problem was in the read() function
I modified it to this:
int aux;
arc.read((char*)&aux,sizeof(int));

was i harsh or just -- you're doing it wrong, but here's a link: askubuntu.com/questions/240156/… ?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I'm not sure I agree it's always better to install it through jockey-gtk. But I don't think there's anything wrong with the way you've expressed this (reasonable) view. However, unless you plan to VTC, I recommend expanding it into a (probably short) answer.

1:24 AM
@Lucio So ... my idea was right, but you got the code right. Yay

yes:
it work like this:
buffer.read(var_to_save,sizeof(TYPE));
and if TYPE is different that char, you must put (char*)var_to_save
After sweet SIX 6 hours I discovered how to read a binary file..

cprogramming.com ^^

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Nop.. www.cplusplus.com

cprogramming dot com has ++ examples/tutorials as well. not as targeted, but i like it being in one place

yeah, I know, that is a good site also..
i like it being in one place Agree.. (AskUbuntu) ;)

1:37 AM
@EliahKagan that's fair. my point with don't apt-get it is that installation issues for the version from repo were probably sorted out by the jockey/additional hardware team. if you have to use a binary installer/build steps to get things working, then it's still not apt-get. hence my perspective.

@FEichinger I really appreciate for your time, thanks.. If there is anything that I could help, you know..

like if the binary driver in repo doesn't work for his card, jocket team may have taken it off the list of matching or whatever. then he knows he has to build a driver instead of booting to a black screen and raging

@AbrahamVanHelpsing no clue
all I know is it's due to be pushed in end of Feb/early March

okay, thanks for checking in anyway.

@gertvdijk One day machines will be able to turn themselves off and on again. They will control their own destinies. We will become them. And they will become us.

@EliahKagan :)

oops, wrong link.
well anyway, there are reports of it turning itself on.
@RolandiXor Hi!

@iSeth HI!

Got your websites going?

Can someone fill me in on this sudden furore about Java?
@iSeth not yet

2:12 AM
@RolandiXor what about Java?

it's bad for you. period.

Q: Is this Perl-related question being closed too hastily?

Eliah KaganThis question is about to be closed: Perl doesn't include directory That's too bad, since: Perl scripting is a standard system administration technique and it doesn't make much sense to reject Perl questions unless there's reason to think they're not relevant to that. We keep bash scrip...

@iSeth seems to be some kind of 0-day freak out

@RolandiXor I haven't noticed a thing about Java in here today... there was an extended discussion about C++ though.

Hi @GeorgeEdison

@gertvdijk thanks
@GeorgeEdison hey

@RolandiXor ah, now I see what you mean :D
I was just wondering that myself...
@Mochan o/

@iSeth Hello

2:35 AM
:D

brb luncheon time n__n

lol
sigh

My troubleshooter is about to undergo a modification.

Like what?

I'm going to start using QtScript - so now the troubleshooting steps will actually be mini-JavaScript files.
That will make the tool much more flexible.

2:38 AM
I'm not sure I understand this change...

Cool, sounds very nice. Efficient, too.

I tried to make the packaging files for it, but I think I failed...

QtScript does ship by default on the Live CD / DVD, right?

what is going to become JS files?

@iSeth The steps

2:39 AM
Well the way it is now, there's just some code that creates a list of commands to run.
Now instead there will be a script that runs the commands.

hi @Mochan

ok, I think I get it now.

@RolandiXor o/

Then anyone can help write the diagnostic scripts without installing the Qt development files and CMake, etc.

sounds good

2:41 AM
@mateo_salta: Thanks for the Debian branch!
I'll take a look at it - I appreciate you taking the time to try your hand at it.

I can't get the recipe to work...
fails at the qmake step I think.

Ah, that's it then.
The troubleshooter uses CMake.

ah, so the rules file needs to change, and the dependency.

Correct - I can do that for you if you'd like.

that would be awesome, do I need to add you to the branch somehow?

2:44 AM
Hmmm...
Why don't I create a team on LP.
Then I'll add you to it, push the code to a team branch, and then everyone on the team can commit.

sounds good, then I can get the recipe going again once you make changes

I can reassign the recipe to the team as well.
^--- There's the team.

so, do you add members, or is there a sign up area

@GeorgeEdison team of 1 sounds like me not you
and it's because i'm obtuse...a lot

There should be a "join" button.
@mateo_salta: Never mind - I added you.

2:50 AM
you have it on "restricted" , oh ok

There's a team Debian branch now.
No wait.
I think I uploaded the wrong code.
2

so, now I push to the team branch, or ?

Just a sec.
Ah, there we go.
You can safely delete your branch now.
But you'll want to edit the recipe first.
I don't see the recipe.

I deleted it
I'll make it again, that wasn't the hard part
plus we want to make a dev ppa first right?

Sup?

3:01 AM
Probably we only need one PPA.
But we could even just use the AU Tools PPA.

@GeorgeEdison does this look right "# bzr-builder format 0.3 deb-version {debupstream}-0~{time}
lp:autroubleshooter
nest packaging lp:~autroubleshooter-dev/autroubleshooter/debian debian"

hm, I get a forbidden error, maybe because the other branch is still under you?
I've got an idea hold on.
nope, didn't work.

3:20 AM
Can I have a link to the recipe.

it won't let me make it... unless I link it to my ppa
i'll do that then send a link, then you can do a team ppa, hopefully
I think I'm making a mess of things... I've got to go now, later @GeorgeEdison let me know if there is anything you need me to do.

jrg
ok, all invoicing applications suck.
all project management tools suck (other than trello)

that almost seems like spam @Mochan

@iSeth ._.
I only did it once.

it doesn't have to be done twice to be spam
but I know you, so I understood it the way you wanted :)

Does that remove the spaminess?
Because I'm recommending it instead of advertising it?

@Mochan, Mochan, it was fine.
but that is a bit better

3:42 AM
:D
@iSeth, I don't get this:

okay, what do you not understand?
and where is that?

Meta

link?

Sorry. Cleaning my keyboard

okay, so that means
Marco Ceppi posted that, made it community wiki and made two revisions to it.

3:49 AM
Why did he make it Com. Wiki?

just a min

ok

A: Installing MS office in Ubuntu without CD-ROM

KayA better choice is imo: SoftMaker FreeOffice for Linux for free. http://www.freeoffice.com/

sigh

I love the comment response.
My response is good, precise and relevant. Go and patronize your kids... — Kay 13 mins ago

ikr
that actually could be flagged as offensive

Meh. I agree insofar as the bit about "SMS language" was a tad jumpy.
Kay's comment was hostile and inappropriate, but I wouldn't flag it. Neither the answer, for that matter. It's a low-quality answer by all means, but both salvagable and more or less answers the question - if it's viable, why not go for something easier to do?

@FEichinger no, it should be flagged as NAA
it does not address the OP's question/problem at all.
it could be posted as a comment however
but since Kay doesn't have enough rep he can't
and in cases like this I ask: "If you don't have enough rep to comment, how important is your comment to the OP?"
in this case, worthless IMO.

"While Microsoft Office has certain advantages over other solutions - file compatibility for instance, and perhaps even your personal preference in UI and the such - the LibreOffice suite included with the Ubuntu install, as well as SoftMaker Free Office for Linux are in many cases just as viable as replacements, as these run natively, as opposed to the Microsoft Office Suite."

4:36 AM
@FEichinger no. Its still NAA.
it does not address the OP's problem.
again, it could be a comment though.

An answer is not a place for opinions, it is a place for evidence, facts and most importantly answering the problem. Your answer fails to do that. Please edit it to answer the problem, revoke it yourself or wait until it is flagged for closure. In Ask Ubuntu, attitude and nastiness are scrictly not accepted. I can understand why you may be offended, but acting in such a way is not appropriate. Thanks. — Mochan 38 secs ago

Awesome @Mochan!

@iSeth ty

that will go on my pro forma list

XD

4:38 AM
It does adress the problem: It provides an Office Suite that is likely much easier installed than this. It's a case of an answer that offers a simpler alternative route.

sigh

@FEichinger But the OP doesn't want an alternative. He said nothing about this and just wants to do crap in WINE.

If the OP wanted an alternative, he'd use Google.

+1

4:39 AM
Can I flag it?

I voted to delete.

Good boy pats on head

@Mochan I did, go for it.

ty

@Mochan That is something that should be cleared up with a commented question beforehand, yes. But in such a case I give the benefit of the doubt.

4:41 AM
@Mochan why thank you :)

We have so many genuinely naive users recently, who don't even know that alternatives exist, because they have barely used anything else. I wouldn't rule out such an option immediately.

@FEichinger Exactly. The OP probably should have politely told the answerer that he wasn't looking for an alternative beforehand (is that what you mean?).

Its a comment. period.

@FEichinger We've had an influx of new users. It's frustrating and good at the same time XD
@iSeth Agreed.

I know it sounds harsh, but that's the way the site is run.
2
and has to be run.

4:42 AM
@Mochan Either Kay should've asked whether MSOffice is required rather than a different, more compatible option, or Anu should've responded with "I need MSOffice" or something along those lines, or best case: Included that in the question.

@FEichinger +1

And I rather give the benefit of the doubt, until it's cleared up. Downvote, salvage it (or if the poster is that hostile, just watch it unfold), deal with it once it's cleared up.

@FEichinger But because he said nothing about "I would be open to suggestions for other, more compatible word processors" it can be assumed that he didn't want that. Also, even if the OP did say he was open to it, it was still be low-quality because all it is is a link.
@FEichinger XD

@Mochan Which I fully agree on. It is low-quality. But, as I wrote above, easily salvaged in this case - provided the asker is open to alternatives.

@FEichinger we aren't saying the OP was perfectly clear. But we are saying the Kay's answer and subsequent comment do not belong in their current place.

4:47 AM
@iSeth And I'm saying: The answer could be perfectly fitting, especially for other users who might not know that (often more viable) other options exist, depending on what is the reasoning behind the question to begin with.

Well, we'll see what the mods say when they check @iSeth and my flags, shall we?
I think we need @jrg. He's pretty level-headed. I agree with pretty much all of you, though.

@FEichinger I disagree. That question is not the place for anything other than a direct answer to the OP's original question. There are other places for suggested alternatives. I am going to let it rest at that.

Anyone tested Raring Ringtail yet? Changes the subject

@FEichinger I don't show my computer to others .__. except for my uncle, who did say "nice wallpaper". I said "it's default ._."
