12:00 AM
Yay - I have XML-RPC working. I can use Python to invoke methods in the application.
(Only methods that are exposed, of course.)

that sounds like a challenge ;)
@bob it's working fine in unity2d, let me enable 3d for vbox and see what happens

bob
you mean the iptables rule ?

no i mean vnc
via ssh connection only

bob
oh

yep, works fine on 3d too

bob
12:15 AM
from where
from 3d to gnome?

both 3d and 2d to gnome. see my answer and screenshot

bob
:(
then what's wrong with my conf

is the far end user logged in?

bob
yes

if my exact steps didn't work i'm not really sure what to tell you. i tested it and it works peachy for me

bob
12:25 AM
I don't have much time to talk about it, we'll do it at a later time, it's already 2.30am here.
but to make things short, i tried it and it doesn't work

okay...i've got screenshots of it working. sorry it didn't fix your problem

bob
yeah I know
i have two questions: the first command, ssh -t 192.168.1.1 'x11vnc -localhost -display :0', does it not just run x11vnc remotely ?

yep...and binds it to the far localhost

bob
in other words, the vnc connection won't go through the ssh tunnel

the second command handles that part

bob
12:27 AM
vnc is not safe, it should go through the ssh tunnel
xvncviewer does ssh ?

that's what the -via flag does

bob
but via is the IP of B, right ?

yes

bob
the public IP of B

meaning create an ssh connection to B and then through that connection handle vnc. otherwise you would have seen 5900 in the list of connections instead of 22 twice
or 5901 or whatever

bob
12:30 AM
yeah it's 5900 I think
okay so that was my first question

that's what the grep verified (it can be anything you want...if you start more than one, they bump up incrementally)

bob
and my second question is

...

bob
how could I modify your command if instead of having B's IP, I have its hostname
meaning, I access it with 'ssh B'

just swap it in
it should just work

bob
12:32 AM
would it be 'xvnc4viewer -via B 127.0.0.1:0'

yep
if it works by ip but not by hostname it's time for a little shell script to resolve the ip and stuff it in there

bob
well in any case the text returned on A is:
xvnc4viewer -via B 127.0.0.1:0

i don't have time for much more, sorry
its time to go to bed
thanks for your help.

Now to write a Nautilus extension.

bob
you can always edit your question if you find a way, i'll be checking the question now and then. Otherwise i'll probably be back in this chat tomorrow

well, it should only disconnect if you modified options (you shouldn't need auth rfb for a vnc session running on 127.0.0.1 on desktop)
@bob it's working here. unless you changed something it should just work there. i don't have an image of both your systems to play with

bob
12:38 AM
I'm sorry too late to think :)
yeah I know
it's okay if you don't find an answer, I'll just do without
it's sad though
I plusOned your answer
good night

nite

Another dilemma: should I bundle the Nautilus extension with the package, or should it be separate?
The advantage to bundling it is obvious - but then it adds a dependency on Nautilus itself.
(Which won't thrill KDE users.)

It wouldn't thrill xfce users either (thunar), but it would thrill kde users even less

Hmm... what to do...
Maybe I need to ask a question for this.

Your choices are easiest or best your call
I think that simplifies it down as far as it can be

12:52 AM
Another consideration though... if packaged separately, I doubt the Nautilus extension will count for the contest.
...and anyone who wants it will have to add my PPA.
So having it bundled would be nice.

Get up with Jono on the reddit. He'll have a definitive answer (just post it as a question on the reddit...I'm pretty sure he reads it daily)
OH.MY.GOD.

I see how it could be constructive-ish, but it would need to be very carefully framed. That being haphazard makes it look like a complaint

o/ @RolandTaylor

@aking1012 hey
procrastinating
not feeling 100%
so just looking for fun/stuff/things/etc

we all procrastinate. isn't it on the sysadmin virtues list?
2
no that was laziness. i was confused

lol yes
procrastination is for artists and writers like myself

writer's block...a convenient excuse

nah - it's more than that
but not going into detail

1:22 AM
kk don't need to press. it was an attempt at lightening your seemingly consistently down mood

sorry...
not good I know
I'm sorry

not a problem. i'm in kind of a low swing myself, hence trying to provide levity

@RolandTaylor Hello.

1:47 AM
Hmm... I've sort of solved the problem.

well that's good

Can you answer this? .desktop and /bin files are included in /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/<pa... http://askubuntu.com/questions/158986/desktop-and-bin-files-are-included-in-opt-extras-ubuntu-com-package-with-qu?atw=1 #applicationdevelopment

So I just include the file (it seems) in a certain location and it only works if the user has Nautilus installed. Otherwise it does nothing.
But it's not quite that simple.

anything worthwhile never is

It still won't work even if the user has Nautilus installed unless they have the python-nautilus package installed.

1:51 AM
Have you considered throwing a dialog asking the user if they want nautilus integration and just gksudoing a command line as a subprocess?

Hmm... that's an excellent idea.
Thank you.

no problem

2:04 AM
@GeorgeEdison hi

ever feel out of place?

I think the meerkat on the left is the most out of place.

Does gparted come with a default installation?

2:16 AM
Nope.
It is on the LiveCD though, IIRC.

cool thanks @GeorgeEdison

No problem.

@GeorgeEdison yeah too tall
Must be one of the Nephilim

Lol... I guess it could be... didn't they get wiped out in the flood though?

yes, but their spirits lived on
and Gen 6 says "in those days and afterward"
Maybe, this is one of the Rephaim or Anakim

2:21 AM
Oh right. So that's one of them then.

Where do you guys get these cat pictures...???

Google+ for me :P
(for the dogs)

And more importantly, why do Python and Qt have a different idea of what a "list of strings" is?

Could this be closed as not a real question? It's more like a statement by the OP

Voting to close as NARQ. Wait a minute...

someone was in room troubleshooting that last night
it was an issue with the dictionary iirc
@jokerdino when you get in look at the question a couple messages up

I don't think it's a question... but there might be one in there somewhere...

I think it's a lost in translation thing.
that look better?

Ta-da!

would have been better if i had edited in your screenshot
@GeorgeEdison congrats on getting it working

@aking1012 Thanks.

@nitstorm i think you meant subv3rsion's answer. rinzwind was an edit on that one

Oh ouch!
Sorry my bad..
Thanks for catching that :) Edited :)

you know what i'ld like to see? a game set in the serenity/firefly universe. that would be awesome

2:59 AM
@GeorgeEdison nice work :D

I have an update... one sec...
The Nautilus support is still very experimental.

jrg
@nitstorm welcome back!

jrg
@izx All hail the glorious windo- oh wait.

3:06 AM
@izx there's no shame in supporting users making the switch...if we only support command-line questions we'ld be UL not AU

Hmm... Nautilus integration isn't quite working right. It's sending URIs instead of absolute filenames.

izx
@jrg lol. so what's up with the driver/drivers tag thing?

Even worse, the XML RPC call is blocking Nautilus and the window stops responding.

izx
@aking1012 Agreed; dual-boot/interoperability is also an essential (intermediate step).

Oh wait... I can get around that with a queued connection (in Qt) instead of a direct connection on one of the signals.

izx
3:07 AM
We aren't AskRMS.com ;)

Back to the first problem.

jrg
@izx No clue.
I've got 6 hours left at home, and I intend to sleep sometime before I leave, so meh. Take it up on meta. :p

WHAT there's a cryengine3 sdk free for non-commercial use
no, i'm not kidding

jrg
@aking1012 dang

windows only though...which is less than optimal. it's not an OSS engine, just an sdk to hook in to their engine

3:20 AM
@jrg Thanks bro :) How's things?

izx
3:41 AM
Why is @joker taking the 4th of July off? I need him to unaccept that metaQ on driver/drivers so we can decide which is the original and which is the doppelganger.
I agree that "questions are about drivers", and it may be the correct form, but we aren't English.SE. Most folks have problems with a driver; the exception is mostly noobs who ask "Where do I get a Linux drivers CD for my motherboard, etc."

i think he was going by count as opposed to some standard naming convention

izx
By count, the synonym is 1200+ and the "original" is 19.
So I don't know if it's a simple swap mess-up, or there is a higher power at work ;)

fair point

4:01 AM
@izx hmm alright.
@aking1012 heh it just happened that i never used to watch star wars.
@aking1012 and i am on it. thanks for the ping.

@msPeachy :waves:
:rolleyes:

izx
Rote-learning ftw.....NOT ;)
Can you edit your q to explain my perspective (if you agree)?

4:09 AM
edit it away.

@jokerdino someone posted a spellcheck issue on libreoffice

yes. i got pinged as well.
and i just saw your comment. does that mean you have fixed your problem?

haven't opened libreoffice yet, i'm at school now and i'm using ms office here...

ah, alright then.

izx
Spellcheck is for wimps. Real men compare each word manually to the hardcover complete Oxford English Dictionary.

4:11 AM
@izx what about real women?
:P

... fair question...

izx
LOL. I hereby dub you an honorary man for purposes of spellcheck. :p

@izx who? jokerdino?

YOU are an honorary man.

gotta go eat lunch, i'll leave you two to sort out it :bye:

4:15 AM
bye
hmm lunch

izx
That's just peachy :p

so you got that question sorted-ish?
@izx you're killin me man

o0

izx
@aking1012 <fist bump> ;)

yup yup

izx
4:26 AM
Yes, looks like we'll have that sorted. I mean, it shouldn't matter -- people will pick up whatever's auto-suggested when tagging.

cool deal, it was picking up close-votes until i noted and edited

very wisely said.
Of course, you really do not need to make a back-up. You can resize your partitions without backing up first. It is your choice but if something goes wrong you must take responsibility for the loss of data that may happen. In the past I have resized my partitions and I have not needed to use the back-ups that I have made but it is still a wise thing to do. It is easier to back up your data than to recover corrupted data. We do not want your next question to be: "I lost all my files. How do I get them back?" — grahammechanical Dec 1 '11 at 18:42

Oh c'mon, Jokerdino... you know it can

@ChanHoSuh oh gawd. That was just too awesome.

oh darn, it got edited... go back to the original version :)
instead of "tab", it originally said "shurt"
OP spelled "shirt"(?) three different ways too

@aking1012 hahaha. i mean moving shirt was just too hilarious.

well i did just talk about RE-moving my shirt

oooh. now i get it

@jokerdino Thanks :) In earlier versions, this program had pre-built views and stuff right I mean we wouldn't need to open each log file with it and stuff right?

no idea.
i usually just cat the logs. so yeah.

@AnwarShah I don't know, because I don't know what question you're referring to. There were some edit suggestions in the queue to remove such links from questions by new users. None of them were your questions, nor (as far as I remember) were they your edits. When I came here I saw @Sathya had posted here about those links being considered spam. there's one more, but I can't link to that

@Sathya Yeah I'm not disagreeing it's spam. Posts that contain links there seem quite promotional (they are not worded like someone actually just happened to find a particular page on that site that they think might be useful), and there is no disclosure in the posts. I was just wondering if there's something people can put in edit summaries to make it clear to reviewers that removing them is right.
@Sathya Thx, that should do.
@Sathya I understand. Thx again.
