Does anyone know why GUI updating has recently been "buggered" this way? I observed it too when customizing Live-CDs for the bounty question -- on both the ISOs and the host VM I was using to build them:

behnam mohammadiI don't know what packages i have installed that i no longer can get and install packages in terminal. e.g. when trying to install Prozgui, i got this error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/add-apt-repository", line 60, in <module> sp = SoftwareProperties() Fil...

proxy bug.

@msPeachy Cool. I've close-voted this as a duplicate of this.

we have a couple of dupes of that.

@jokerdino Any that still need close-votes?

izx
@jokerdino And apt-get still works fine?

izx
OK, it's an lsb-release issue as I suspected. Thanks @jokerdino, I'll edit the answer to Karthick's question to explain.

@izx Is there a bug reported?

hi all

Hi @fossfreedom.

heya @foss. sorry for keeping you too busy. i was a little lazy to comment everywhere

1:03 PM
@EliahKagan thanks, now I've earned the privilege to create a chat room...:P

izx
Hello hello @foss

@EliahKagan let me check
@izx yeah. just the add-apt-repo IIRC

@jokerdino ... too lazy ... what is the opposite of a star then :P
... thanks for the cleanup guys ... very useful flags.

izx
@EliahKagan I don't know in general, but it needs to be reported to the Ubuntu Builder folks -- their "customization" messes up lsb-release so that this error is triggered and sw-props-gtk and sw-center no longer work

@izx If you've reproduced the bug, you may want to report it.

1:05 PM
@fossfreedom :p digging up and reading the answers was taxing enough.

Does anyone know if we already have a question about how to make Wubi.exe use an existing .iso image rather than downloading a new one?
1
Q: How to install ubuntu inside windows

Ieyasu SawadaI have this iso file ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso and then I downloaded the corresponding wubi installer for this version. That sounds like something someone would have already asked.

@fossfreedom i couldn't empty my flag quota :(

@izx Cool. Thx.

1:07 PM
You know, that "I can't move my Shirts in Chrome" guy was prescient...

@EliahKagan the question title does not match the question itself

@izx Hmm

@msPeachy Why not?

@EliahKagan it has to do with they doing something funny with wubi

izx
@msPeachy Better? "How do I get the Wubi installer to use a pre-downloaded ISO?" FTFY.

1:09 PM
let me hook up something.

technically it does not, the question title says How to install ubuntu inside windows but his question was about downloading the iso or wubi?

@msPeachy fixed it dudette!

izx
Killing this thread.... :P

what happened to all the q's with 3 or more close votes? they seem to have been disappeared.
only 1 and 2 is remaining :?

it isn't actually clear what he/she wants, "instead of making use of the iso file it ignores it and goes ahead with downloading another one", but in the first statement, he/she said that the iso and wubi has already been downloaded

1:12 PM
the already downloaded iso downloads another iso.
#iso-ception. Happy?

@jokerdino Right, or Wubi.exe downloads another ISO.

@jokerdino :P

@EliahKagan hmm that strikes me. wubi.exe always downloads ISO on its own.
i never really played with wubi much though.

@jokerdino Are you sure? I mean, it at least doesn't download a new ISO when it's run from a CD/DVD/USB/mounted-image that already has all the files, right? If you insert a CD and install with Wubi, it doesn't download another ISO of the same CD.

the OP is from the Philippines

1:15 PM
@EliahKagan now i know why i hated wubi. thanks for demystifying.
usually, i just download the wubi.exe and let it do its job.
and that happened about three years ago.

does mods have the privilege of viewing who vote-up or vote-down posts?

@msPeachy no. only devs can

voted blindly

what are devs?

actually no.

1:18 PM
@msPeachy stack exchange developers.

A: How do I get the Wubi installer to use a pre-downloaded ISO?

izxYou must download the desktop CD version of the ISO and place it in the same directory as wubi.exe before running wubi.exe Alternate/server ISOs are not supported DVD ISOs are not supported except for Edubuntu The downloaded architecture (32/64-bit, or i386/amd64) must match your Windows versio...

@izx, I suppose the OP already said that, the iso was in the same folder.

@jokerdino thanks

izx
@AnwarShah Please read additional caveats in answer.

@izx Are you sure the architecture has to match the Windows version?

1:21 PM
poking holes until you go insane.

izx
@EliahKagan I believe that is how Wubi does architecture detection - based on the host Windows platform. It doesn't do low-level CPU capability detection.
I'll test it right now, I created a mini-library of supported release ISOs for that "how many max CPUs supported" question ;)

No more close votes for the day. Nada.

@izx Well, the source you linked to seems to suggest the opposite.

izx
@EliahKagan Sorting it out....

should i feel guilty in down voting a question? :(

1:28 PM
it depends on the question.

it depends on the question

jrg
@msPeachy no. if it's a bad question, then no.

i'll not be a crackpot.

jrg
@jokerdino haha

izx
Is this a simple 10.04 vs 10.04-POINT-FOUR problem? Publicly available wubi.exes are for the latter only, OP suggests he got the original LTS release ISO...

1:29 PM
@jrg no, you didn't read that. ;)

izx
starts up XP VM to avoid Wubi f'ups to live system

jrg
@izx it might be.

We'll know in a bit...

Welcome to the club of the downvoters.

you can't until you have 125 rep anyway :P

oh i thought that if i can up vote i can down vote as well
:P

yes you did. and you forgot to memorize the /privileges like I did.

jrg
i'm going to aim to be the first 100 rep mod.
Just for kicks, and to completely screw up /privileges

please don't.

1:43 PM
he he

Why? aren't you mod now?

jrg
I am, but I really want to screw up /privileges sometime.

sometimes me, too.

@EliahKagan, I didn't know that

anyway, I gave 6 downvotes yesterday

@AnwarShah good job

I feel that, I must downvote bad answers , If i want the site to be more useful

jrg
@AnwarShah And rightly so.

1:50 PM
@msPeachy yea but during that whole "his brother smokes pot" thing or w/e he was just whiny and annoying. not unlike Charlie from the last 2 seasons of Party of five.

Hah, done it for you all.

@jokerdino nice one

@jokerdino, good job. nice Q/A

Maybe the wording wasn't solid enough.

@rlemon never cared much about party of five :P

1:52 PM
Another point, jrg can't be a 100 rep mod. He must have at least have 101 meta.islam.stackexchange.com/users/8/aarthi

@msPeachy really? man back in the 90's it was all about Saved by the bell, party of five, and 90210

Is it correct?

jrg
@AnwarShah No, she's a SE employee. Different situation.

aww that looked like the bat symbol

clooney? kilmer? or keaton?

izx
@EliahKagan OK, definitively answered. Point-versions and architecture of the ISO do not matter; but Wubi will say "downloading..." for a short but variable period of time (depending on computer "speed") while it pre-processes the downloaded ISO, which may be confusing.

Is it batman, or Batsman?

@izx thanks, now i get it

@msPeachy it's Christian Bale

who mentioned dino and batman?
it's joker and batman reference actually.

bale is the current batman

Adam West was the only batman.

1:59 PM
bale? not Gale?

the rest just try to be him (then dark night and it all went to hell)

@izx, Take from me an upvote

@AnwarShah yes it's bale

Quick: any way to eat CPU on a vanilla WinXP install?

izx
2:14 PM
A masterpiece, if I may say so meself:

Step 1) take CPU out of the mobo
Step 2) prepare with lots of butter on a skillet @ medium to high heat
Step 3) Salt for seasoning
Now let this simmer on the skillet for about half an hour.
Sit to cool for 5 minutes.
Enjoy!

@izx, yes, very good one.

:5225158 I'm the only one here that's not on that list ...:P

what list?

that one you just posted and removed :P
anyway, does anyone here knows how to install wammu?

2:22 PM
sudo apt-get install wammu

that simple? didn't think it'd be in the repos, i've download a tar.bz2 file instead
when i pressed tab after typing wamm it became wammu u?

It is always good to check the official repo first

You can search the official repositories here for any software you're wondering about. (Or run apt-cache policy PACKAGENAME or search in Software Center or Synaptic.)

@EliahKagan, can you look at this

Q: Change device name

Victor SI would like to change my "Device name" as shown in the settings panel. How do I do this?

@AnwarShah It makes sense he wants to change the device name. victor-System-Product-Name is not a very useful name.

2:30 PM
got the point

Is "device name" is just your hostname?
If so, it shouldn't be hard to change, and I'm sure we already have questions about that.

mine is that, hostname

@AnwarShah I'm on a Lubuntu system right now, so I don't have the System Settings utility to check.

I checked, in my system it is same as hostname.

:5225414 Since your system has that interface, and you checked, I figured you'd give the answer. But if you prefer, I can post an answer.

2:37 PM
@EliahKagan Honestly speaking, I will be happy to give the answer

@AnwarShah Cool, thx.

@EliahKagan, thanks.

@JorgeCastro: a few questions on untagging 12.04 when you have a moment...

3:33 PM
@izk yo

Q: Why did this command ":(){ :|: & };:" make my system lag so bad I had to reboot?

blade19899 Danger! Do not run this command to "test" it unless you are prepared for a crash and/or force-rebooting your system I was in my Virtualbox running 12.04 trying to compile an app, and while waiting I happened to chance upon a forum where a comment said: Try :(){ :|: & };: Fun, too, and...

Jeff Atwood has his presence registered.

izx
@JorgeCastro OK, let me know the sort/URL you're using so I know the "other end" to start working from; also, do we enforce strict untagging for non-hardware questions unless mentioned that "oh but it worked in 11.10..."? And finally, do you have any tips for a faster workflow than dozens of tabs :)

ooh, Jeff actually replied to my tweet.

izx
jokerdino tingles all over :P

I was mocking him.. so didn't expect him to reply.
@codinghorror Why are you running havoc in that poor fork bomb question on @AskUbuntu? Leave it already..

3:43 PM
@izx is everywhere, in chat, in site..

izx
@AnwarShah Blame the Shirts in my Firefox!

@izx, give me some tips. really!
I knew the galternatives but forgot at the moment of answering

izx
@AnwarShah Tips for what?

Good answers

@izx I'm using the review for now
but hmmm, let me think how this can be easy
@izx I don't think we should be like strict about it or anything, just common sense
Like, most simple things don't need to be version tagged

3:50 PM
are we talking about removing 12.04 tags?

and I think by reviewing the unanswerred ones first we'll at least give those questions another shot

Hello all

@jokerdino yeah, just cleaning some up
I think the problem is ....
when you ask a question
it has recommended tags in there
and the version ones are always popular
but whatever, we can clean out some since most of those questions are from new users anyway and need to be reviewed

izx
OK, good -- how do you use /review to get to 12.04 though? I have the usual (close first answers low quality first questions late answers suggested edits) options...

@izx click on the side tags
link here --^

3:52 PM
omg, I didn't know we could do that.
!!!
aha!
here we go

@jokerdino it was supposed to be my edit which polished it /sulks

one month's worth

@Sathya he edited almost everything. :p

if like, a few of us just review what we can from that link we'll be :ninja:

izx
Perfect! Thanks @jokerdino - I think a self Q/A meta may be handy to explain these little-known features!

3:53 PM
@jokerdino I should put up /s more prominently..

just review 12.04 because they are recent. makes sense!
@Sathya hehehe

Also .... my new best friend to dupe things to:

Q: What should I do when Ubuntu freezes?

ændrükAll operating systems freeze sometimes, and Ubuntu is no exception. What should I do to regain control when... just one program stops responding? nothing at all responds to mouse clicks or key presses? the mouse stops moving entirely? In what order should I try various solutions before decidi...

bookmarks it

k, why are we removing from q's again?

because it is a meta tag
remove where it is not really useful. i think.

3:55 PM
how's a meta tag?

izx
It's a poor abused victimized tag. Not "meta".

lets the stalwarts explain.

I mean I can understand removing it when a question doesn't pertain to

Ok, what are we doing now
I'm confused

izx
@Sathya It is only being removed where it's superfluous.
Just because someone is running 12.04 doesn't mean their question necessarily relates to it
e.g. Jeff Atwood untagged 12.04 from the fork bomb question ;)

3:57 PM
that makes sense.

should have kept my mouth shut. I would have looked smarter that way :P

Hi all

izx
@jokerdino So that's how your namesake dino died off way back when, no meteorite or whatever :P

@Sathya it's more generalizing for questions that aren't version specific

@Takkat Heya :)

3:59 PM
heh :P

so basically what happens is we usually have a nice set of generalized questions

@JorgeCastro right, which is what I assumed it would be, but the conversation above confused me

then a bunch of new users show up at release and ask a bunch of questions that usually apply to everything
and then just as we finish tidying up a new ubuntu comes out, etc.

time to get some sleep. sneaks out

actually, I am finding that the newest version tag is usually full of dupes of things we have anyway, heh

4:00 PM
Version tags should be on answers rather than on questions anyway

Hi All

I don't see any real solution to versioned questions
Separate "how do I do foo in version X" and "How do I do foo in version Y" would be an even worse problem I think

For those who weren't here 8 hours ago

It would be worse than worse to have a different question for any version.

izx
ok, who resurrected this abomination (JRGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRR!)

4:05 PM
For those who weren't here 8 hours ago

@izx is it supposed to be drivers or driver or neither?

izx
@JorgeCastro driver (drivers, additional-driver(s) should be synonyms of it)

it looks like its the other way around?

izx
4:23 PM
@JorgeCastro Sorry, so it is...I wonder why the numbers are so warped though?

Does anyone know if there's a performance hit (in terms of disk I/O) when running an O.S. a smaller disk partition ?

izx
@blong A smaller partition? Only the normal variation you see in spinning HDD transfers from outside to inside, depending on where this partition is positioned on the disk.

agree. the only times when i saw increased i/o was when the system needed to swap out memory. smaller partition sizes for the root fs didn't seem to cause troubles.

@izx Awesome, thanks izx & @htorque

Jorge CastroI would like to set up two factor authentication for machines I am login into via SSH. How can I do this?

Hey, that's neat.

sure is, but i only have a dumb-phone not a smartphone

Same here (at least until the outcome of the contest is known :P).

pretty sure you'll do well

jrg
@JorgeCastro I can't check right now, but it seems sane based off of what I've done in the past.

10:28 PM
@aking1012 How is your project coming?

I switched to a dumb-phone myself recently.

@GeorgeEdison decided to sit out appshowdown, but it's done-ish

Oh, okay.

oddity, gtkvncviewer from repo doesn't have an icon...

I decided against pipes / D-bus or anything fancy like that for IPC - I think I'll go with shared memory.

10:39 PM
oh, well that works too

Then when a script wants to do something with NitroShare, they invoke the command with arguments.
The program sees the arguments and sends them to the currently running instance.

that's probably simpler in one way and more complex in another

That might not be a long-term solution... but it will (hopefully) be enough to implement Nautilus integration.
I just hope it works.

i don't see why it wouldn't
