Q: Conky colors wont show up

ccramaI am running Gnome 3 and am trying to get conky to work. When I just installed and ran conky in terminal, this showed up. So I googled how to make it look better and I found Conky Colors. I followed this guide and when I ran it, nothing showed up on the screen but conky shows up in the system ...

Looks better now.
@jrg o/

Ignore the titlebar - it shows up as Y-Chat on my machine.

jrg
9:04 PM
oh its xchat.
argh. broke my 150 day visit streak this weekend. :(

You only need 100 for enthusiast though, right?

jrg
oh well, one more day and i'll have visited 365 days.
@GeorgeEdison i was trying to go for a 365 day streak. :P
I know, unrealistic, but still.

it can be done ;)

@jrg oh noes

jrg
@htorque Indeed. Have to start over.

9:07 PM
@Takkat is trying to get the 1000 day streak :P

jrg
wow, the reddit community is much easier to please then the hacker news crowd.

First to come will be 500 in 27 days
3

@jrg Missed mine because of the UDS in Budapest. :D

We should send you a cake!

jrg
@OctavianDamiean Thats a valid reason though...

9:08 PM
There is no reason for missing a single day here...

(I almost did when we had no Internet on vacation)

get him t3h starrs

I would be wlling to set up a SE Slime Volley server if someone can find me the files I need to put in the root directory.
Any intrest?

@William SE Slime Volley?

9:09 PM
Mmmhmm

You want to set up one of the SE clones?

blobby volley clone?

jrg
Y U SET UP SE CLONE?!

OSQA is probably your best bet.

no, set up a slime volley server
apt-get install slime-volley
that game

9:10 PM
Oh... that's a game then.

there are no servers for it anywhere on the internet.

the original

@GeorgeEdison Does the concept of this thing called "game" sound foriegn to you?

@William Charm it!

What?

9:11 PM
The Slim Volley server.

I don't know what you mean\
there are no servers outthere
and no instructions on how to set up one

@htorque That just crashed my DisplayLink driver :P
...and Chrome :)

if i can get the files i need to put in the root directory id be happy to host one
@OctavianDamiean What do you mean?

I meant that you should create a Juju charm for it. :)

@GeorgeEdison flash?
flash should die
3

9:14 PM
What is Juju anyway?

immediately. instantly.

@htorque The whole display went down.

no one likes flash

cool

It wasn't just Chrome.

9:14 PM
report it!

flash should die a painful dath

That game should be fairly easy to rewrite in JS/HTML5 canvas.

html5 will rule the world

@OctavianDamiean you have two hours! :P

Aye aye Sir!

9:15 PM
Anyone know what files i need to put in te root directory of the server?
this must be sme sort of record day for starred messages

@OctavianDamiean wrong answer! you should have said: "aye, i'll do it in one!" :D

If you are a sucker, star this message (that means you, @htorque)
lol

I'm just going to write a question on Stack Overflow. Hai all, I want this Slim Volley game in JS/HTML5 canvas. Can I haz teh codez pl0x?

@William sucker-punch :P

OUCH!
curses @htorque under his breath

9:18 PM
@OctavianDamiean first few comments: "we won't do your homework.", ten minutes later someone will post teh code!

post teh code!
or else!

Actually it is like this:
1. After about two minutes someone posts only a link to a blog describing something totally different in poor English
2. Another three minutes later someone else will post some horribly formatted code
3. A comment will be posted that they won't do my homework for me
4. Someone flags the question
5. It'll get posted in the Meta.SO chat
6. It is closed

So, looks like the slime voley idea is a bad one.
any other games i could host?

@William FreeCiv!

9:25 PM
ok
can you get me the files and ill put them in the server's root directory

You should just be able to:
sudo apt-get install freeciv-server

Luckily I'm one of the guy that sits in the Meta.SO chat waiting for such questions. :D

Umm... hat can i put on the server itself
im refering to a ftp server
i dont have acess to it's gui

How can you start programs on the server?

I don't thiink I can.
All I have is ftp access

9:34 PM
Then you won't be able to start the server.

yeah.
So m y options are sorta limited.

There aren't many game servers you can use without starting them.

I am off for today - cu

@GeorgeEdison That almost sounded like the cake is a lie!

But it is a lie.
(The cake, that is.)

9:43 PM
ANy that you know of?

It would have to be written in a scripting language like PHP or Perl.

Yes.

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo any progress on the wubi issue?

@jrg yo I found a bucket oh things that need close votes, they're in the UR room

jrg
@JorgeCastro k lemme hop in

9:47 PM
good night all

gnight unbeliever
:)
Sience Iost that 30 reputation, I'm at the bottom of page 2 for month. :(

10:12 PM
Aka, @jrg

jrg
well, if i'm the alien, and Jorge is the robot, then...
2

@JorgeCastrotheRobot

10:36 PM
Boom! Just killed two bugs in Stack.PHP.

YAY!
Oh! Me shiny new gravatar is now in effect!

Cool!

Sad kitty.

jrg
This is crazy. My laptop will not move an inch, and ubuntu will get perfect wifi reception, then I reboot into windows and it can't keep a solid connection for five minutes.

Other pehpole findz thad kitteh's memes mean. sniff sniff
@jrg Haven't you figured it out already? Penguins have over twice the brain capacity of Windows!

10:41 PM
@jrg Maybe the Windows driver is using less power or something.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison No idea.

Yea, it is probably using different default settings.

In all seriousness, it's probably a driver issue, and if you really need strong wifi on windows, if you need windows at all, try super user.

@jrg I was at a restaurant a while ago and Ubuntu connected to their hotspot in a couple seconds...

Or there might be some sort of driver configuration utility.

jrg
10:42 PM
Well, sad thing is I trust you guys more than I trust the SU guys. Even with windows. :P

...and I spent 20 minutes in Window's Device Manager before I could connect :)

I feel trusted!
Not that I'm trustworthy...
AND THE ROOM GOES SILENT!
This always happens!
It drives teh kitty crazy!

jrg
A HUSH FALLS OVER THE CROWD

Wating for someone brave enough to break the silence...

10:55 PM
@OctavianDamiean Consider the silence enjoyed by your'es truly.
Cool! When you ignore someone they get all tiny

@GeorgeEdison, the Clear chat user script is awesome. I wonder why I didn't come up with something like that. All I did was making Trollface cursor icons for my chat room. :D

What script?

2
Q: Clear Chat - Clears all of the messages in the chat window.

George Edison Screenshot About Ever wish you could simply clear all of the messages from the chat window (similar to a terminal)? Well now you can with this UserScript! Simply install it using the link below and click the clear button - and that's it! License MIT License Download Get it here: http:...

@OctavianDamiean Thanks :)

jrg
@William So I take it i'm still ignored. ;D

11:02 PM
No.
I'm not that mean.

jrg
oh.

Or, I'm not that prickly...

jrg
i was going to insult you, monty python style. :P

lol
respect mr. python
he is awesome
@GeorgeEdison and so is your script :)
Now I can get rid of that annoying spinner I posted a while ago

I love the chat clear button
@jrg i still <3 you

jrg
11:09 PM
heh

brb

see ya
me is gonna go eat talk to y'all later

I should have set the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+L :)

@jrg no luck so far - these windows commands didn't do anything
the laptop is out of commission for the time being, so I'll be a bit slow to respond to new answers.

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo :(

11:18 PM
I'm hopeful :) that bounty should get some eyballs on the question. there's no hurry

@StefanoPalazzo what seems to be the issue? Is there a question i can reference? Maybe I can be of assistance.

1
Q: Wubi's root.disk is missing, but you can still log in as a guest - where is the data?

Stefano PalazzoThis laptop is running Windows 7 and Ubuntu, which was installed via Wubi. Ubuntu boots perfectly fine, but you can only log in as a guest. So in order to recover the files, we now need to find root.disk so we can mount it and recover the data using ecryptfs-utils. The file is supposed to be in...

but I can't debug anything now :)
(it's not my laptop)

I'm looking at this -- seems like the provided answer is what I would have said. NTFS corrupted the image.. but if you can log in as guest thats a no-go for the answer.
Wow.. how'd you manage to get this to happen?

jrg
I'm still sadface.
because i wasn't able to come up with a backdoor over this weekend

@jrg beautiful use of gist btw

jrg
11:27 PM
@lazyPower <3 the markdown option for gist. :D

I just discovered a service i can enable on my gapps domain that auto-imports GIST inline into yoru email a-la stack exchange chat style.

jrg
my gist account has... tons of markdown

Talk about making developer reviews dead simple to do

jrg
as in, more markdown then "real code".

Nothing wrong with that

jrg
11:28 PM
true fact.
i use it a lot because i have more control over things there then i do on say, paste.u.c or a normal pastebin
git powered pastebins FTW!

@lazyPower yeah indeed. it's completely messed up

Oh yeah, i'm a big supporter of the Github toolchain.
I have tons of people chastise me for using it over a public service - but i ignore their ignorant whims... mostly because github IS a public service...
I'm kind of sad you cant get private google code repositories though. That would have been nice to roll our entire company up into the google cloud. #firstworldproblems

Bounty offered: Gnome 3.2 problems in the shell http://askubuntu.com/questions/73615/gnome-3-2-problems-in-the-shell #ati

^ this bounty needs to be removed, user opened a new question was was helped on it.

jrg
@lazyPower didn't you warn me about apt-get -y ?

11:40 PM
yes - its a no no. "Lets let apt make all the decisions for us, even when it thinks it knows best"

jrg
thats what i thought

you relogin and suddenly discover you've installed KDE as your primary desktop -- oh snap -- of course thats the lighter side of it.

jrg
i'm probably going to edit it with a warning
unless you know of a better tool to use.

Well.. he answered the users question. He covered it pretty well from the man page. It's going to assume you know what you're doing. You should resolve questions manually unless you've done a pilot and this is for a mass system deployment of subsequent machines in a paralell environment.
@jrg want to do me a solid and preview this presentation i have coming up on monday?

jrg
@lazyPower sure, whats the topic?

11:52 PM
Service Migration, why we did it, how it benefit you, and how to work like a rockstar in a browser

jrg
email it, or send it via GDocs or something. VIA THE CLOUD MAN. THE CLOUD.

i made it in gdocs :P

jrg
ooohhh... we could make this so meta. ;P

jrg@gee-fail.com?

jrg
"Service Migration: AKA, move to the cloud, how you can do it, and how it should work for you"
@lazyPower james@jamesrgifford.com
i know, repetitive.

11:53 PM
sent
actually, it will stick in peoples minds - there was a study on lifehacker somewhere that stated "people remember names before email addresses. Make your email the same and people will remember it" - thats the bane of my name, its entirely too common.

jrg
Gotten.
blasted Gdocs.
it keeps trying to capitalize it to "James@$domain", not "james@$domain"
f...
2

hmm... it sure did
let me re-edit and resend the share link

jrg
Why google thinks it needs to be capitalized is beyond me...

weird its still doing it
its strange sometimes... for sure

jrg
must be something on my end
let me look at my gapps settings
weird.
let me try now, i think i figured it out
YAYIT WORKS

11:59 PM
huzzahh
