Assistance! I can't set the CPU fan speed!
Does anyone know how to do this?

@GeorgeEdison Did you try fancontrol?

@DavidRando No, how do I invoke it?

@GeorgeEdison Forget that ;-) run sudo pwnconfig and see if you have any control of your CPU fan speed there (you should have lm-sensors installed first)
@GeorgeEdison sorry, sudo pwmconfig

@DavidRando Tried that I'm afraid.
> /usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
Output of 'sensors':
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +52.0°C

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +70.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0001
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 1: +68.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

@GeorgeEdison yeah, the problem is lm-sensors doesn't have the module loaded for the sensor chip from your motherboard (or the module doesn't exists for it)

3:34 AM
@DavidRando How can I find out what chipset I have?
That might help.

@GeorgeEdison run sudo sensors-detect, it should tell what sensor do you have and the current module loaded

anyone use libreoffice?

@DavidRando I did that.
@JoshuaRobison Yup.
@DavidRando After I ran that it added 2 more entries to the output of sensors.
Before it was only showing the output of 'acpitz-virtual-0 '.

@GeorgeEdison alright, so you already know what are the sensors module needed. Check out here: lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices and see how the support is on them ;-)

@GeorgeEdison Hi, George. I just started using it and can not find the option to remove the space around the edge of documents. I want to zoom page width but even after zooming page width there is still about a 1cm space around the edge of my document. I don't mean the text boundaries or margins. I mean the gutter area. Is it possible to remove that gutter?

3:39 AM
I'm off, cya ;-)

@JoshuaRobison Lemme try to reproduce that.
Yup, it does that all right. I have no idea how to change that I'm afraid.
You could always find out the current zoom level and make it slightly higher.

@GeorgeEdison, lol that's one idea. thanks
abiword has no gutter.

I may be in luck... there's a BIOS update for my chipset.
Gotta reboot. Be back in a few minutes.

3:59 AM
On Windows now...
Here we go...
BIOS update successful... system booted... fans running...
Well, seems to be working so far.

partclone vs. clonezilla - any suggestions? normally i just backup whole partitions, but i'm short on backup disk space and only want to store used blocks instead of sector-by-sector
closing questions is great :P

@Rinzwind so let's close the pinta dupe then?

Q: Is there a Paint.NET alternative?

jumpnettDoes anyone know of a simple Image Editor, with functionality comparable to Paint.NET, for Ubuntu? I've always found GIMP to be overkill and too complicated for what I want to do.

at least the answer would be the same

@htorque eh no suggestions. Both do their job (but I am more of a dd man myself (I got space to waste))
ah @Cas! nice :)

i used the predecessor of partclone (partimage), so i guess i'll try this one first

ha! killed the competion \o LOL
insert evil grin

9:44 AM
partclone seems to work fine :-)

good :D

partition size 56 gb, backed up only 20 gb in use
now i can cross my fingers and update the ssd's firmware :D
i don't like that you don't really know that your ssd is about to fail unless it fails to boot or just holds no data anymore. with rotational drives i could at least check for failing sectors or hear some clicks (ok, probably too late to do anything about it, but you KNOW that it's about to fail)

hmmm is their some sort of "smart" for sdd?

smartmontools works with ssds, but i'm not sure how useful the values for failing sectors are

There is so little documentation for pulseaudio.

10:00 AM
just ask lennart

dunno, i have only one sink :P

oh I have 4 to 5 but use only two switching with my app.
stopped working from 10.04 :'(

I am lost >:D do I flag a q that's a bug or do I choose close? >:D

Q: How can I use Alltray in Unity?

suduraisI've been using alltray with teamviewer to make to system tray. With 11.04 unity interface its not working. I know, Unity have deprecated some of the tray features. How can I get teamviewer to move to tray and not to be placed in unity place holder all the time. ?.

its been asnwered

10:26 AM
@Alaukik cuz the bounty isn't awarded yet? >:D the bounty issuer needs to accept it ;)
or... bounty issuer is lazy >:D

that was answered on april 14

yes and the bounty seems to be set a few days ago (maybe he just wanted the badge ;) )

@Alaukik copy your answer there?

@Alaukik askubuntu.com/questions/38026/… for your libreofice q :)

@Rinzwind that is for "will there be an update in the default repo"

10:32 AM
no
it has a ppa in it and that will get you the latest version

@Rinzwind it does not have the 3.4 version

it doesn't!?
weird cuz that ppa should have the latest :X
3.3 is the latest (?) even the libreoffice.org page does not mention 3.4 yet :)

so where is the 3.4 deb or tag.gz on their site? ;)

these packages are available in the ppa

10:42 AM
TAR.GZ install:
tar xvzf LO_x.x.x-_Linux_x86_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz
cd /Downloads/en-US
rpm -ivh *rpm
cd /Downloads/en-US/RPMS/desktop-integration
rpm -ivh *rpm
(with en-US language)

there are debs also

in Natty when you download a deb USC will take over. Tried that?

no
i was hoping for a ppa
plus there will be multiple debs

that would be ppa:libreoffice/ppa but if that still shows 3.3.... :D

if they follow the lo3.3 stlye
@Rinzwind ironically it has the following packages

10:46 AM
do we have an eta for doomsday today?

@htorque yes 24:01

> According to the 89-year-old Camping, the end of the world will begin today, and the actual end will come on Oct. 21, with the total destruction of the world.
at least we'll see 11.10 released :D

so you don't want to be raptured ?

nah, i think i'll just skip that event
i don't need to be part of everything :P

I like doomsday. Exciting times \o/

10:58 AM
ironically the packages in libreoffice repo ;)

you took a screen shot of taking a screen shot?

@trampster it is called a shuttering lag ;)

11:13 AM

BenI'm lazy and i know it... but I am looking for either a debian package or a set of terminal commands that will: Download kinect drivers enable me to control the mouse with Kinect Is there any one out there that knows if this has been done or can do it?

I want to comment this with "I do but I am just as lazy as you" :D

Ill get the 32 rep I need elsewhere ;-)
and +1 for you; the q does not deserve a +1 :=)

12:49 PM
oh my word @Rinzwind, you can cast close votes!

yes sir!

awesome :D
and in 21 days, that's pretty bloody impressive

I wish someone upvoted two of my 9 upvoted answers though >:D
@StefanoPalazzo nah I even had 4 days with less than 20 rep :D

on that note
user image

12:51 PM
tsk

thats a 148.76 rep per day !!

If I wasn't lazy it'd be 200 rep a day :=D
w00t!
You've earned the "Nice Answer" badge for I can't install Thunderbird.

well you have 11 hours left

@StefanoPalazzo he is talking about rep per day

ah, I misread that.
got it

12:53 PM
14 bounties open - he can still make up for his lazy days ;)

it is incredibly difficult for him now to raise that to 200

I found a nice way for the other one:I am just going to keep on editing twitter accounts in until it's on 10 \o
@Alaukik bounties :=D
but most of the bounties have either no answer or have a good answer already :D

@StefanoPalazzo will schumacher win in his last season?

@htorque he will not even get close ...
Vettel \o/

@htorque heh

12:55 PM
oooooooooooh Webber \o/ pole

ah I knew that was going top happen
@Rinzwind I watch f1 on mondays
:P

@StefanoPalazzo are you still accepting very awesome and cool feauturerequests?
oops

@Rinzwind enjoy your 200 rep ;)

wrong person to ask:D

@StefanoPalazzo nothing set in stone - qualifying still going on
let's shut up then :P

12:56 PM
Oh right, nice!

anyways, i think he won't win - maybe will get a podium

@Alaukik I am on 198 now (there's a -2 answer I deleted this morning ;) )

(that could have even been a lie, I'd be just as happy about it :P)

but i'm certain he won't be there next season

Schumi on the track with hard tires :\

12:58 PM
@Rinzwind sshhh, let's not spoil the party for @StefanoPalazzo ;)

@htorque I don't think it reflects on his talent too much. Look at how jensen lingered around in the mid-field for years, then got won the championship out of the blue

@htorque ok :( snif

thank you guys :)

@StefanoPalazzo sure, put him in a red bull an he'll win - im 100% positive he's still one of the best drivers on the track

righto
just as with Kobayashi :)

1:00 PM
naaaah :P
i'm afraid we'll never know

Kobayashi is awesome, he's sporting and brutal

lol

slightly disturbing (:

talking 'bout disturbing
"you know it's weekend when there are no updates for ubuntu+1" :P

1:39 PM
@Rinzwind quick question
in javascript, do you put a space before a function's argument list?
i.e. "function () {" or "function() {"

1:55 PM
no space!

it's "or" i'd say

sorry for the delay;was watching xmen 7 _O-

heh
kthx :-)
goes to change hundreds of lines of code

well it seems you can do both :D
@StefanoPalazzo wait! \o
lol

the version without space is more common i'd say

1:58 PM
wait, so there isn't an official style-guide?

i only know about one for java and there it's without space for sure

if there is I don't use it @StefanoPalazzo :X
but w/o space is more common I agree with @htorque on that

I guess I better stick to the rules then. So that I won't acquire any bad habits as I'm learning the language

nice, very compact

2:01 PM
lol
oh use ternary when possible

heh, always :)

I find that to be a lot better to read than if then else (that takes up 7 lines with the {}'s)
My boss got angry at me for using them _O-

I'm used to python's ternary operator, which is value if condition else other_value

=> (a==true)?do_this():do_that;

can't you do "a?doThis():doThat();"?
as opposed to (a == true)

2:05 PM
ello

\o/

hello @OctavianDamiean @StefanoPalazzo (fell asleep all of a sudden)

yes @StefanoPalazzo but then I always do (a)?doThis();doThat;
don't know if it is habit or obligatory to use () :D
I call a bug on this one:

Q: Ignore "Bad: new and old password are too similar"

user999Hello I receive this message when trying to change my password: "Bad: new and old password are too similar" The passwords' "similarity" is irrelevant for my needs, so I'd like to bypass this. I tried sudo passwd $my_username I thought this had worked because and I got a message: passwd: pa...

now to find it on bugzilla >:D

changed it from asdf0 to asdf1? :D

2:10 PM
1234 -> 1235
>:D
wait... do you think he actually used $my_username

Cas
@StefanoPalazzo another pygtk q : ive got an item added to a menu but when i right-click the menu stays open but jumps away from the mouse

@Rinzwind i don't think so ;)

huh?!
you mean a GtkMenuBar?

Cas
hang on
its a gtkmenuitem on a gtkmenu i.imgur.com/k1A5m.png
you can see in that image how the orginal menu has jumped down
hmm I'm just thinking there might not be a glade entry, would that affect it?

@Cas I don't think so.
I have no clue what's going on there :)

2:24 PM
yay \o/ 2500 :)

Cas
no worries :)

@KaustubhP my congrats :)

@Takkat thanks a lot :) Although took a long time to reach there :p and a Nice Answer badge that gave me 2500, makes it only sweeter :)

but continuous :)

@KaustubhP awesome, now go create some tag synonyms ;)

2:29 PM
@Takkat yeah, and it only inspires to keep contri-ubunting cough to the site :D
@htorque wil be keeping an eye out now for synonyms. just read about it now.

Cas
@StefanoPalazzo i think the problem is the mix of append item in code with an existing glade menu layout

@Rinzwind maybe? Can't reproduce this here. Some bad passwd I guess

\o/ hit the 200rep cap again. Now for some free advice >:-D
and here comes another vox populi badge >:D

you do know that you can't trade rep points for money or spare time? :D

hmm so @Takkat lied to me? :-D

2:46 PM
maybe you can sell your account on ebay like those wow guys

mine can :D

I made a new UserScript for Ask Ubuntu!

@GeorgeEdison oh dude APT links!
awesome :D

apt links \o

It inserts a new button on the editing toolbar.
So now you just click the button, type the name of the package... and presto!

@GeorgeEdison that is so awesome!

Does it work?

5:03 PM
can we have a picture explanation? confuzzeld :D

yup
@Rinzwind in the question/answer field there is an icon like this one
just click it and enter a package name

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah _O-

@GeorgeEdison nice!

Someone wrote a bookmarklet earlier, but it had three flaws:
- It didn't update the preview
- It appended the text to the end of the answer and not where the cursor was
- It used JS's prompt() method instead of creating a dialog that matched the image-insert one

add it to the tools question on meta :)

5:06 PM
I most certainly will :)

I agree! :=D

@GeorgeEdison one tiny thing. Can you make it give focus to the textarea after clicking ok?

@StefanoPalazzo Sure, one sec...
@StefanoPalazzo Fixed!
Same link for the script.

awesome

cool now I need to learn the package names from memory :)

68 rep down the drain already :D

A: How to post links that install software via apt?

George EdisonSummary: I have now written a UserScript that adds a new button to the editing toolbar - this button enables you to insert the link to a package simply by clicking on it and typing the name of the package. Download: You can get the UserScript here: http://files.quickmediasolutions.com/userscript...
