Oli
@MarcoCeppi Where's the fun in playing with settings without upsetting anyone?
@MarcoCeppi lol
I was just trying to get a twitter feed in here. Doesn't appear to work in either mode though.

@Oli Oh, you need to grab the RSS feed - and it'll only work for new posts since you added the feed.

I tried to add the Ubuntu Planet feed once and it made everyone upset

Oli
1:05 PM
Added that to a feed in here to post as a ticker (rather than full posts because it's crazy-high-volume)

the AskUbuntu twitter feed would be nice I think

Oli
Eep, there it is

since it always picks the crap questions it could be a reminder for us to fix them. :)

RSS Attack! :D

Oli
1:06 PM
Yeah we could have the AU twitter feed as a full post, it's fairly low volume IIRC

oh boo to that!

Oli
haha, okay

(the rss thing popup I mean)
the twitter thing ++

Oli
Headshot, it's dead

@Oli Yeah, about one post every 4-5 hours

Oli
1:10 PM
Hmm whose leg does one have to hump to find a RSS link on twitter?

Oli
Right that's done. Thanks @MarcoCeppi. The first post might be a bit major but it should slow down after that.

Q: Installing on a Lenovo S10-3

Søren HaubergI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition on my Lenovo S10-3. According to the release notes, there is a bug in the kernel that forces me to add intel_idle.max_cstate=0 to the kernel parameters. I did this when booting the install CD and I was able to install Ubuntu. During the insta...

this just hit 2500 views, the answers could use editing/formatting love for anyone looking for edits
hey wait
@Oli did our Accept Rate just go UP a percentage point?
I could have sworn we were at 86% yesterday
we seem to swap with Gaming daily on traffic ranking.

Oli
@JorgeCastro yeah that's possible - We have had a lot of accepted answers today

getting close to 13k users too
it "feels" like we've had a bunch of new users the past two weeks

hehe

Oli
Not sure how much I can say before I'm told off but traffic has been steadily increasing with a peak yesterday. New user sign-ups have been fairly constant

1:30 PM
Waits for the SE teams wrath to fall upon @Oli :P

Oli
Yeah traffic yesterday was the highest since launch (where I assume the mobs of SO, etc all came over to have a look)

1:46 PM
good, so the beta is having an effect on us (I hope)

My two cents: It's the beta.

we have the best Unity content on the web, period.
this hard work will pay off. :)

good chating room!
oh yeah.

2:21 PM
@Oli so I started bookmarking: askubuntu.com/?tab=interesting instead
@Oli anyway I was wondering if that would help our rate or not. I have no way to measure that.

guys I'm needing some help compiling php with odbc and dbase options in linux, does anyone know about this or should I ask on SO?

@Oli or maybe it only works past a certain question threshold
@sadmicrowave that sounds more SOish

thanks

2:39 PM
SO for compiling questions? That sounds More U&L maybe AU

2:49 PM
@JorgeCastro hi! sorry, somehow missed your message :)

What can you do when the user files gets killed?

what do you mean by that?

Must i reinstall it or can i correct it by using the install cd?
My servers filesystem krashed i cleaned it up and the files were corrected but my log in files were deleted

3:06 PM
I'm not sure. I've never had my users files go AWOL.

@htorque hey I just remembered
there's a bunch of stuff in dconf-editor that can be configged if you're looking for something to add to the config unity answer

hm, which question/answer would that be?

Bash script to start and then shutdown/restart various processes http://bit.ly/dPpta7 #bash

@AskUbuntuTwitter, what's up? you got a lot of questions!

@JorgeCastro will do

@htorque Don't we all? :P

@YiJiang so many questions, so few answers ;D

3:45 PM
Trying to do something...different in Awk
I want to format a CSV file to create a new one, using elements of the CSV. So I have a three col CSV = ID, NAME, COUNT, I want to create URL, COUNT where URL is a standard format composed of ?id=ID wrapped around the NAME element

@MarcoCeppi Volley Brawl! :D

@OctavianDamiean No Ubuntu machine at work :(

@MarcoCeppi later then :)

@OctavianDamiean Definitely!

I'm upgrading my Natty install YAY!

3:49 PM
@MarcoCeppi something like awk '{print $1 $2 $3}' doesn't work?

@htorque it does, I'm trying to do this:
5,"Name of place",14
7,"Name of palace",2
This is what I came up with
cat file.csv | awk -F',' '{ print "\"<a href=http://URLURL/?sellerId="$1">" system("echo "$2" | sed s/\\\"//") "</a>\","$3 }'
That way it'll output into a 2 col CSV - but the system just pipes back to the shell - instead of inserting it into the stream
Not sure how to strip the "" from the second field

i see. hmm, not being an awk guru doesn't help.

Actually - I'm being stupid. I'll just strip them prior to processing. It'll break if there is a , in the CSV regardless of the ""
I should probably parse the CSV out into an array then process down. Anyways

^- that

Arugh! it still didnt' work. I wanted the CSV import into OpenOffice convert the URLs to clickable links :(

4:04 PM
uh got outvoted by Jon Skeets awesomeness :D

A: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException

Octavian DamieanIt means that you are trying to access an index of an array which is not valid as it is not in between the bounds. For example this would initialize a primitive integer array with the upper bound 4. int intArray[] = new int[5]; Programmers count from zero. So this for example would throw an A...

Is it normal for xorg's memory usage to creep upwards slowly?

@YiJiang you're the second one I hear with that problem, it really seems to leak memory

leaks can happen. here it's 62mb after three days uptime.

@htorque well due to the nature of leaks it also depends on the usage I guess. :)
@htorque ew thanks for the nice edit! :)

@OctavianDamiean That was me complaining about it a few hours ago
Its now back up to somewhere around 30% again

@OctavianDamiean Nothing, I just don't use it was just lamenting over that SO question
Now I'm going to get into a fist fight with Wordpress because it's preserving my indents or code structure for this code example :(

@MarcoCeppi oh :D
my new C book should be here tomorrow, YAY for diving into C

@OctavianDamiean yw ;)

4:39 PM
[Sigh... can't format as NTFS.]

@GeorgeEdison What about?

Hello

Ohh, you got an article published - nice!

@MarcoCeppi Look at the author.

if anyone can help me out; I've got a joystick that's configured and working smoothly unfortunately it acts as my mouse
and I can't get it to stop
so when I play a game that does use joystick input I get random clicks all over the screen
and sometimes it crash the program :(
googling reveals that this is an old problem that has been fixed, but it's still doing it for me
something about xorg automatically assigning joysticks as mouse input or some such
trying to play spiral knight like this is impossible; impossible I say!

4:45 PM
OH WOW. Ubuntu one's come a lonnnnggg way since I last used it. :O

[Patiently formatting as NTFS...]

@Shazzner hilarious. that's a pretty stupid bug. you should post it as a question

@djeikyb ok will do

@GeorgeEdison hey! so you finally got vista up, eh?

Yeah :P

4:52 PM
I was hoping it was something simple and stupid :/

It... was... interesting.
Thanks for updating the question with chat info.

@Shazzner the answer prolly is simple and stupid. unfortunately for you, it's also obscure.

@djeikyb It's formatting as NTFS right now.

@GeorgeEdison oh, i didn't update the question, i just made an answer with the stuff we went through. i left you to update the question as you saw fit

I see.
Thanks.

Q: Joystick acts as mouse; won't stop

ShazznerJoystick acts as a mouse, even when I'm playing a game that uses a joystick so I get random mouse events going on. I plugged a joystick in to play Spiral Knights, also installed joystick and jcalibrate. Everything is working good, except by default the joystick moves the mouse around and the but...

it wouldn't let me add a joystick tag :9
surprised there wasn't one already

@Shazzner There's one now

@MarcoCeppi Gratci! :)

if I run ubuntu 9 and I do apt-get dist-upgrade, will I then be running ubuntu 10 or 11?

@JoshuaRobison you mean dist-upgrade ? Also which version 9.04 or 9.10 ?

right, ... actually I don't know how to check which version I am running?

5:17 PM
lsb-release

don't do a manual upgrade, use the update manager

I want to install nautilus elementasdfdsfa and it's telling me to run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade in the terminal
I just am wondering if that will put me at the newest version of ubuntu or not

@JoshuaRobison dist-upgrade (the upgrade manager thing (i think)) will update to the next version unless you're running and LTS and choose to do LTS -> LTS. So if you have 9.04 - dist-upgrade will put you at 9.10. Running it again will get you 10.04 - running it an additional time will put you at 10.10

those instructions are likely wrong
but you can't skip releases
you have to go from one to the next one
unless you're doing LTS to LTS, so if you're on 8.04 you could go 10.04

win

5:21 PM
hmm. that is confusing

It's simple @JoshuaRobison upgrade goes to each next version. Doesn't jump to the most recent. So you have to upgrade in order of releases

i just want to install nautilus elemental
elementary

what instructions are you reading?

ok and what version of ubuntu are you on?

5:23 PM
im actually running mint 9.xx but feel embarrassed because im chatting in a ubuntu room.

im actually trying to install this theme jurialmunkey.deviantart.com/#/d316eqx
I actually had it working nicely before but I did a system reinstall
and I cant find my instructions for how I installed nautilus elementary the last time

maybe ask on unix.se how to install it on linux mint?

so I already installed it once using the apt-get dist-upgrade command
but just wondering if that will put me at 10.0 or not

doooood, the new twitter page is weird

5:28 PM
that shouldn't move you a major version

Q: How to configure an usb ddr dance pad for Stepmania on linux ???

Ubuntu documentation seem outdated for lucid lynx 10.04 LTS, I have Stepmania running but my official ddr dance pad from ddr universe 2 ...

Would you like this question migrated to AU after I clean it up?

@failbadp yeah, post cleanup should be okay.
We probably don't want it, but it might get a better response on AU

@MarcoCeppi Well I doubt we can answer it either

I actually have a DDR pad I think. Maybe I can take a stab at this tonight

awesome, now i have no idea which answer should get the bounty

Q: Disable resize gripper in windows?

A Hylian HumanIs it possible to disable the the new resize gripper that shows up in Ubuntu Natty/11.04?

5:33 PM
@MarcoCeppi Is it any better now?

@failbadp Yeah, looks better
We'll retag it when it makes it over here

Okay, I'll retag and send it over then.

Or that works too <3

Whoops, I forgot to kill that comment
I'll mention that we received that untouched from Super User :P
I'm too nice for my own good.

@htorque a nice problem to have

5:44 PM
plus, it's not my worst problem :D

crystal method ftw

@lazyPower Probably going to watch that movie tonight

@MarcoCeppi have you not seen it yet?

hey, any of you programmer types want to recommend a database to a perl newbie such as myself? i'll search the so site, just thought i'd ask here

5:48 PM
The previous message would indicate that's correct. I have not
@djeikyb Database software - or documentation/tutorials?

@MarcoCeppi a database i can store food recipes in, and interact with

@djeikyb I would recommend MySQL personally

@MarcoCeppi Excellent. THe movie is awesome, turn up the sound system when you watch it, very epic.

Will do!

@djeikyb you can also take a look at sqlite for smaller projects

5:53 PM
@MarcoCeppi any particular reason? i've heard of mysql, couchdb, a few others.. looking to get a feel for what/why people use them.

@djeikyb I'm a php/web developer. MySQL is by far the most popular in php PHP development (It's the M in LAMP) CouchDB is definitely more Destkop oriented and SQLite is a great alternative because you don't require a running database server (either local or external).

@djeikyb the biggest thing behind database usage is strictly preferences. 90% of most applications wont realy see the "advanced" features of its DB backed. and the issues related to each. The presense of a DB server in itself makes the app kind of limited, when you can go with something like SQLite that is portable. YMMV with each ofcourse.

ah, intriguing. so if a webhost has php but not mysql, then i use sqlite instead and can just upload the sqlite file and continue working?
hm. well this gets me started, thanks guys!

yawn
how's things people

@EvilPhoenix they go.

i hate outlook so much

@MarcoCeppi some noise flags from the gnome 3 answer incoming

@JorgeCastro readies

@djeikyb: You around?

6:57 PM
@MarcoCeppi what happens if two people flag one post - do both flag weights increase?

@htorque Weights don't really matter to us - we only have at most 15 flags in the queue at anyone time. If more people flag though - it shows all the flags. So if 5 people flag "offtopic" I'm not really going to second guess it
But yes, it gets a weight increase

no, i meant do both people get an increase (if the flagging was correct)?

^--- No errors.

@htorque Yes, you both do but I think it's the same amount as if you were the only one to flag

7:02 PM
@GeorgeEdison to be expected, after badblocks didn't show any errors
@MarcoCeppi ok, thanks :)

Yup.
In Disk Utilities.

could be permissions of the disk? I'm not sure

Hmmm.

usually I only get errors like that if there are problems with reading/writing
I had a similar error once with a flash drive that was failing
