can't get any better/matching icon theme
@jrg: so for documentation I suppose all I need to provide is sources and color changes for conky right?

jrg
@wisemonkey something like that.
afk, cya guys

k will be done by end of the day :)

When does the American Civil War II start?

12:23 AM
grr
and should avoid PPAs and blogs we can't update.
you guys are killing me with these PPAs and scripts from random websites!

what if there is no other gui tool available?

ok so let's pretend this question is the canonical answer on the entire internet
and it's "the way" to do this.
you've given that guy root access to all those computers.
(which is fine)

12:38 AM
I agree with you, a ppa can break and go away + 4 command lines are easy to use compared with adding a ppa, installing a tool, running it and with luck it wont do any harm and will work nicely. But I did ask and 100% of the voters said "both". :P

it just needs to be separated so people understand there are risks
AND FOR ME TO DOWNVOTE.
:p

sexy: got "Revival" :D
@JorgeCastro To tell you the truth its only in Ubuntu that you see so many ppl whining about "no gui = hard", maybe its Ubuntu's own fault and those those sh*t blogs out there. Everyone has their own way and tool come out for something that 3 commands do the same job.
I laughed when my introduction to arch linux was "there is a global configuration tool for all your needs: nano". I don't anymore. I know its not everything, you should not do everything by hand, but ffs, 3 or 4 commands vs install a tool? I'll use the commands faster then one can remember the PPA's name.

sure
but the right way to do it is to encourage people who make these tools to get them in the archive and supported instead of making users install PPAs
that tool could be submitted to the software center

/me nods

anyway, it's not our fault it's not easy to install, Oracle chose to make it that way
there's not much we can do about it

12:52 AM
@MarcoCeppi: Are you around?
I'm sorry for the delay in catching up with you... I came down with a terrible case of the flu.

well, its not oracle's fault also if users want to be that specific in what to install, most of these posts starts with: "I heard its faster", has: "dont know how to install it" in the middle and ends with: "oh, I managed to install it and its as fast, anyone knows why?"
Everyone whats it as easy as possible, Ubuntu wants it as easy and secure as possible. sometimes its hard to merge the 2 ;)

right
that's all good
until random PPA guy decides to crush thousands of machines.

lol
yeah, thats the part the user fails to understand

1:33 AM
@jrg: Speaking of turbo boost... we used to have a button on the front of an old 486 that actually had a button labelled "turbo boost".

8:05 AM
@MarcoCeppi I just have. I have already posted my own view on the topic as a response, and I'm sure plenty here would back it.

@WarriorIng64 I think the actual answer is decent enough
it doesn't provide any link to actual adult content, or show any images. it merely mentions the existence of it. that should be okay, no?

No, for the reasons I have listed
My apologies, but this is obviously a controversial topic I feel strongly on...just making sure my voice is heard

yeah, it should be discussed obviously - no need to apologise for that

Where I come from, the subject itself is kind of implied to be taboo, for one thing

I have two points to make on it, one, I can't really relate to the offensiveness of the content. given it's this abstract
two, we should think about how much 'offence' is okay

8:16 AM
For me, it's kind of like running face-first into some adult ad while surfing the Web
...

right. but it isn't actually adult content

I just had a flashback to what HedgeMage said about list questions being community ads when I said that
Depends on your definition of "adult content". There are those of us who still think even mentioning it is just not right, regardless of the detail one goes into on it

that's more interesting. I don't really think being offended is a good argument, but I'll reconsider if I'm convinced it casts a bad light on our community
there's another point: if we decide that any mention of adult content should be deleted, would that not lead to other kinds of posts having to be deleted as well?

It is really just a technical interface to adult content. There was not adult content displayed or advertised.

for instance, what if someone asks about software to read the quran, and that deeply offends someone or other
for this reason, I think "it offends people" isn't a valid argument

8:20 AM
Which means that if we delete such a question we should delete every browser related question just because someone can potentially browser for adult content with his browser.

That's not what I'm trying to get across here...

that's where the argument goes though
if we decide to delete content for moral or ethical reasons, we have to define what that means exactly

@StefanoPalazzo i don't think we can draw a direct analogy between someone being offended by someone else asking questions about software intended for a religious purpose and those asking how to access adult content...I think the latter is something more people would be squeamish about

Bounty offered: What is the current state of apple device (iPhone, iPod, etc.) support? http://askubuntu.com/questions/83484/what-is-the-current-state-of-apple-device-iphone-ipod-etc-support #sync

Adult content is offensive in that some of us regard it as, frankly, vulgar and disgusting, which I think is different from being offended that others hold different religious views

8:23 AM
@WarriorIng64 I know a couple of Americans that could get offended.

And hey, I just happen to be one!

@WarriorIng64 The flip side is that others don't.

I would be immensely offended by, say, a unity lens "bringing you all the latest news about racism" - I'd find it just as disgusting, if not more

@OctavianDamiean So does that mean it's wrong for us to be offended by it? I think that is a rather inconsiderate view to hold when it alienates us

@StefanoPalazzo To be fair that would be in violation with the CoC.

8:25 AM
but I'm still uncomfortable with deleting a post because someone is morally opposed to it
yes it would, good point

And I think I'm actually one of the less conservative ones over here...there will be issues

@WarriorIng64 No, I didn't say that. What I mean is that there are people that just don't feel like you about it.

further, me deleting such a post would be in violation of one of my rules - i.e. "don't make the rules"
unless there is an overwhelming consensus by the community

@OctavianDamiean I understand that, but all the same there is still a significant group of us who feel as I do. Look at the earlier chat with Amith KK and Roland Taylor, for example
@StefanoPalazzo Which is why making a Meta question is a good idea...to get the community involved in making a decision on this

8:28 AM
nods

I think I'll let that stand where it is for now...I'll be fine with whichever way the community decides on it, though I will disclose that I do hold a position on it

it doesn't violate the CoC, does it?

@StefanoPalazzo Nope.

I just want those who don't share my view to understand there are those of us who would be quite sensitive to it and this should be treated with care

mh.. I'm just thinking, maybe an overwhelming consensus isn't enough, even.
> Any decision we take will affect users and colleagues, and we should take those consequences into account when making decisions.
so, let's say tomorrow there's a great consensus on meta that we should ban any mention of politics or religion
I wouldn't agree to that, even if 20 people voted on the meta post (and reference the CoC to back that up)
can we get to moral standards by consensus (from a small vocal minority, remember, we have many hundreds of thousands of visitors, only tens of people posting on meta)?

8:34 AM
nods

I can understand allowing something if a small minority objects to it; I don't think religion or politics mentioned casually would set most people off
But I think adult content would
I don't know if it's the case in other countries, but like where I live we see religion and politics mentioned on the news ever so often and most people have no issue with that

I remember the tech press talking about "porn mode" in browsers when it was introduced

But you hardly ever see mentions of things that are more related to sex, again because people wouldn't want their children exposed to it, want themselves exposed to it, or want others to know they are exposed to it

nobody accused the browser vendors of anything in that case
okay that isn't the best analogy. in this case, the Scope is actually akin to porn mode in browsers, not our mention of it.

But in the case of "porn mode" for browsers, that's an individual's choice as to what content they want to see (likely in private, which is what it's made for)
That's different to posting information on it on a widely visible website

8:39 AM
isn't it the same here? it's our choice whether to install the lens or not - making it even harder to get at the adult content

On the contrary, it makes it easier

what would that policy actually look like?

I think one of Ask Ubuntu's purposes is to make information easier to get at for users, sometimes too easy

just "remove all mentions of pornographic or adult content"?

Well, we could look at something like what YouTube does and impose age restrictions

8:42 AM
I'll just take a minute to read up on the law

If enough people flag it as adult, it could be hidden by default unless someone of appropriate age explicitly tells the site they want to see it
I guess the issue isn't that we should outright ban the content, but make it "childproof", so to say

I'm pretty sure this answer doesn't in the least constitute "dissemination of pornography to a minor" - just to get the legal argument in
even the "over 18" warning in the answer itself is superfluous from a legal point of view
(not a lawyer, obviously)

@StefanoPalazzo Me neither (wish I was, then maybe I wouldn't be so paranoid over copyright and licensing, but I digress)

you understand, I have a big problem with deleting anything on moral grounds
I don't think I have any right to do that
I've signed the "code of conduct" and the "leadership code of conduct", both of which say nothing on the topic. Amending that with some (reasonably arbitrary) moral code doesn't seem right to me

Let me try asking a theoretical question: suppose someone posts an answer asking how to hack computers or program an actual virus, or posted an answer on how to do just that. Obviously that is not moral, but would that then be allowed if we're not taking that into account?

8:50 AM
accepting that, you could still make a case for an adult content filter that makes the user click a button saying he's over 18, like youtube does - of course.
even though it's unlikely that we'll get that (SE is always reluctant to implement new features, in general, unless the need for it is overwhelmingly obvious)
@WarriorIng64 I should point out that, unless it violates any actual laws that we subscribe to, I would not be against that either

I wonder if a checkbox could be implemented which allows a user to mark an answer or question as containing adult material and allow it to be filtered...this is also what Google Sites does (why do I keep bringing up Google?)
Building on that, anybody could mark their own content as such, but changing that label on others' content could only be done with fairly high rep

It's a solution, but in my mind a solution to a problem that doesn't exist

Anyways, I have a final exam in five hours I need to cram some more on...I'll let that question sit and see what comes out of it in a couple days' time.
Night (or morning, or whatever...it's 4am here, and I get confused when I'm on a nocturnal cycle)
I appreciate the discussion, by the way

sure, it's a discussion worth having. good look on that exam :)

9:06 AM
The point is that it is one question out of hundreds of thousands of questions. It doesn't really make sense to implement such a complicated feature just for one question.

10:00 AM
@OctavianDamiean I'd also argue against an age limit on that specific question

Indeed, it is not our responsibility to protect minors on the internet but their parents'.
Basically what I wrote in my answer to the meta question.

hey there folkds
folks*

I'm writing my own answer now, and I didn't manage to make my point as concisely (:
Hi @gideon

just wanted to know, with regard to this answer (askubuntu.com/a/61422/38120) if its possible to install win8 on a new external usb hdd. (I have two regular HDD's on my system one with Win7 and the other with ubuntu 11.10)
or maybe that would be a highly stupid thing to do and I should just buy another harddrive?
hey @StefanoPalazzo

10:08 AM
@gideon I know you can install Ubuntu on USB hard drives, no idea about windows. But that's a question you can ask on superuser.com

aha!~
So I can plug in my external and install ubuntu on it!!!!
how would I boot into it though?
just plugin?

mh. I'm not 100% sure.
Either it'll just work (i.e. appear in the installer like any other hard drive) or you have to use something like the usb disk creator

hmm

if it does appear in the installer (which I vaguely remember) you would boot it like you'd boot from a CD or a usb key
that is, plug it in :)

i see.

10:10 AM
my computer always tries to boot from my external hard drive (because it's not been formatted, and there used to be ubuntu installed on it)
It's going to be very slow indeed. of course

ah.

I'd recommend asking a question like "how do I install windows 8 on a USB disk" on superuser. That should be the best way to try it out I guess.

will do.
thanks! so much @StefanoPalazzo

quite alright; I hope I remembered correctly ;)

From what I gather so far, installing ubuntu on a external seems easier and would suite my situation much better (since I don't use ubuntu now but plan to later when I know crazy things like bash, the terminal and apt.get a little better =P )

10:20 AM
Mhmm, I'll have to create my LoCo website this week.

A: Should questions/answers dealing with "adult" software be flagged as offensive?

Stefano PalazzoYes, they must be allowed We don't even have a choice in the matter, because we're unable to form any policy that would be fair and respectful to the vast majority of users if we start deleting any content on moral grounds. We don't make the moral rules. And if anybody is offended by any kin...

long answer again :\

Very nice answer.

Q: Should questions/answers dealing with "adult" software be flagged as offensive?

As Roland Taylor and I commented on the answer, we have concerns over whether this material should be posted at Ask Ubuntu. Besides the fact that someone under legal...

google docs - yeah, i like google knowing everything. >:D

Of course you do. After all you want even better customized ads for you, don't you?

yeah, i want them to put maximum resources into creating ads i ignore. :>

google already knows everything.
there is no escape

@htorque It's still PG, I couldn't find anything in that post which would change the rating otherwise.
Talking about software which performs and action, and actually posting the results of said action directly on the site are two completely different things. Just because you talk about "pornography" doesn't actually make your site "pornographic" It's lacking the "graphic" part.

@htorque likely a small series of little popping sounds

@htorque I wouldn't blame you, and as a parent you have every right to do so. When I'm a parent though, I probably won't block AU because it tells people how to install something :)

Then I screamed more than my girlfriend because I hate spiders like that.
