12:30 AM
Thanks, @leslie!

1:08 AM
@amWhy Sorry to ping you. I want to ask, since I am not sure. I am about to ask a question about PRIMES 2022. Should contest-math be included in the tags?

1:25 AM
you didn't ask me :), but questions about problems in pending contests or competitions (if that's what primes 2022 is - i don't know what it is) might be shut down fairly quickly. there have been meta threads about this in connection with other contests. there is a spectrum of opinion but the last i checked the consensus was that it's very much OK for people who care to close that stuff.
this seems kinda weird for people who aren't participating in the contest (and often may not even know that they're asking a problem from a contest) but many people in the community feel that the danger it poses to contest integrity outweighs the inconvenience to people who aren't participating (who i guess are supposed to wait until the contest is over)

Oh, no. I am really sorry @leslietownes
@leslietownes The deadline is November 30. It is December 1 now, if it's true for the other time zones

oh. it's still nov. 30 here for a few more hours :) i might check what the timing is on the deadline before posting.

We waited for this moment :D
Really? Oh, shoot. I might have to delete it and repost it later.

it becomes 12/1 on the east coast of the USA in about 3.5 hours. 6.5 hours on the west coast.

Our time here is UTC+8, so I am not sure since we are late for 8 hours.

1:32 AM
if the contest is any good it should specify an end time, or i would assume midnight between 11/30 and 12/1 at wherever time zone the contest is 'hosted' in, if they don't specify.
if it's just some online thing with no geography, maybe wait until it's 12/1 everywhere? i don't know :D
i can't count the number of times i've had to dig up this kind of information at work. someone will ask "when is this due?" "when will we know if the other side responded?" and the answer involves all kinds of digging into rules and time zones.

Time zones are dumb. Maybe the entire world should have the same time: Day, and night. Just kidding

haha, i've suggested this before.
who cares where the sun is? if you have electricity, and don't work in farming, you shouldn't care where it is. it shouldn't matter at all.

Maybe light and dark?

you never see people fighting about this on sci-fi shows with space travel, but in real life i think they would. they don't explain why everyone has the same sleep schedule and without a solar cycle there's no reason for them to do it. so someone on the ship has decided when everyone sleeps and wakes. you'd think this would be a cause of friction among the crew.

whenever i sleep late, i just say that i follow other time zones to prepare when i go there in that time zone

1:52 AM
in this increasingly connected world, who can know otherwise

3 hours later…
4:52 AM
Yay! Got my first vaccine now.

that's good news! i hope there are no side effects.

8 hours later…
12:36 PM
@leslietownes Here it is, posted earlier:

Q: Is this solution to the fifth question in PRIMES 2022 valid?

souplessThis is the fifth problem from PRIMES $2022$: (i) Describe an algorithm to find the closed ball (disk) of smallest radius containing a given finite set of points $(x_i, y_i), i = 1, \ldots, n$, in $\mathbb{R}^2$. (ii) Do the same for points $(x_i, y_i, z_i), i = 1, \ldots, n$, in $\mathbb{R}^3$....

1:26 PM
@soupless Congratulations!

@amWhy Luckily, I don't feel any side effect.

2 hours later…
3:51 PM
@amWhy What should I do, since I just got the vaccine? Things like avoiding this, doing that?

@soupless No worries. You are not a risk to anyone. You should still heed face mask advisories, to protect yourself from others and them from you, unless you tested negative prior to vaccination. It takes a little time to develop immunity after both shots.

No, what I mean is things like avoiding alcohol and stuff.

@soupless No, no need to avoid alcohol (always anyway best in moderation ;)). Nor any specific substance. There may be recommendations for immune-deficient persons, but not the general public.

@amWhy I don't drink alcohol though. There is really no need.

I would make sure to get enough sleep, just because prolonged lack of sleep can compromise one's immune system. Let the vaccine do it's work, and do your best to get sleep, at least for the next week or two.

4:01 PM
@amWhy Ok, thank you. Going to let my body recover from 3-hour sleep to longer periods.

@soupless ;D. You're young, so your immune system can rebound nicely, provided you give it a chance.
@leslie enters the chat

@amWhy fights with my own self whether i should sleep already or not

i celebrated my booster shot with some wine. i scheduled it on a friday when we would have been having wine anyway.

@soupless If you are sleep deprived, why not? Oh, and given you are past 9:30 pm, yes, you deserve the sleep.

you read some stories saying that your immunity boost from a vaccine isn't immediate, but takes a week or two to reach its height. i don't know if this is vaccine specific, or significant. i didn't change my behavior pre- vs. post-vaccine
and yes, go to sleep.
:D

4:09 PM
@leslietownes Yay! Mine comes in two weeks.

@amWhy I wake up at 6:30 am. Wow, I sleep at 3:00 am. Astonishing.

weird 'side effect' of my booster: i had a bruise on my arm where it went in for over a week. sometimes bruising is a consequence of the person mishandling the needle, but i didn't notice that at the time of the shot.

@soupless Then your assignment is to head to bed now, with head on pillow no later than 10:30 p.m.

I really want to. The problem is that, I think about it unintentionally, and the thoughts go in a loop. It's really hard to break that loop, so I either tire myself mentally, or physically.

@leslietownes That can happen with insufficient pressure applied, post injection. Ideally, they trap a piece of gauze covered by a taught bandaid, and will often advise the hold one's other hand to apply pressure as well, for a couple of minutes.
@soupless I understand. You need to learn how to help counter such loops from happening, by finding something enjoyable and relaxing to do, before bed. It comes with practice. Music can help some. (Just don't pick heavy metal!). Imagine box under your bed, where you table all your wonderings, until morning. It will it be waiting for you to open when you wake up.

4:16 PM
@amWhy I really don't know with music. Earworms are problems that no one needed.

@soupless No problem.

That's why I don't want to play music before sleeping. They tend to repeat over and over again, and it's worse if you know how the music goes.
Imagine hearing Kevin Macleod's Fluffing a Duck again and again. You can make yourself think that it plays in a loop.

@soupless I know! I still have a song in my head I can't seem to stop, mostly when awake.

What I try to do is to imagine listening to the music's harmony. This somehow makes me escape the loop.

4:32 PM
@soupless Simon and Garfunkel have are awesome in terms of harmony.
\o @AlexanderGruber

4:54 PM
and their major influence the everly brothers

@leslietownes Yes, indeed!

funny dialogue this morning. "i've got fire in my hair!" "what?" "my hair is fire!" "did someone tell you that?" "yes" "who?" "[name of kid at school]." "he's right, i guess." "mama's hair is fire too! mixed with orange!"

5:09 PM
@leslietownes Love it!
Fire is red and orange, so mama's hair is on fire, too! And I'm coming up with comebacks, like "you're hair is vanilla pudding", or "you have bear hair" or ....

5:23 PM
But better for Helena to be proud of who she is.

@amWhy Hello! Still awake! Oh, no

@soupless Then don't get up for 7-8 hours after you go to sleep! ;P

I really wish that there are night classes.

5:37 PM
It seems moderators on this site feel the need to be present in every chatroom I'm currently participating in. Heh, @AlexanderGruber? TheSimplifier in CURED, taking the shift after Xander, and Pedro appearing the moment I enter the math mods' site. Have fun, y'all! Hah!

6:03 PM
she also included me in having fire hair, which is nice. my hair is darker than hers and i shave it so you can barely see the color.

@leslietownes Yay! Fire hair unite!!! ;D

3 hours later…
8:57 PM
So tell me about this leek dish, @leslie, only when you have the time.

oh, it's a recipe ted recommended. i can dig it up somewhere.
back when it looked like munchkin was OK with trying new foods i was going to make it. then there was a lot of backsliding.

@leslietownes That's going to come and go. My brother's daughter was very picky: she'd it chicken nuggets, and ham (sliced like for a sandwich). She refused hamburger, beef, meat in general. That didn't last past 8, she'll try anything now.
I think parents sometimes mess it up for kids when they force a child to eat something at the dinner table. "You're not leaving this table until you take a bite!!!!"
Sometimes a child might seek comfort in what they do like, and other times, more often by your munchkin's age, it's a matter of independence and control, not at all in a bad way. It's actually healthy. But hey, I'm not the parent of a three year old. Instead of thinking of it "backsliding", maybe think of it as a "phase" in the process of her development.

9:41 PM
yeah. phase is a good way of looking at it.
we've also had honest backsliding. she was sitting on the actual toilet in the week before she broke her leg, which necessitated using a potty. she doesn't want to go back to trying the toilet.

9:55 PM
thick fog outside. i love days like this.

10:13 PM
1 message moved to Sandbox
@leslietownes Sorry, I did not mean to offend.
^^^ if I offended.

you didn't, but it's also nice that you didn't mean to. :D
better than the alternative.
munchkin was doing some very risky spinning in her bedroom the other night. i got nervous because this is what she was doing in day care when she broke her leg. i said something like "i dunno, do you want to do something else?" and she said "no! this is the kind of spinning where you don't break your leg"
i didn't even mention the broken leg, but she was clearly thinking about it. :D

10:54 PM
@leslietownes Oh, that's sweet! Instead of "Ten little monkeys, jumpin' on the bed, one fell off and hit her head!" Or in addition to it, "Ten little kitties, spinning on the floor, one fell down and broke her leg..." Too late for that one.

broken legs feature commonly in the stories she makes up

@leslietownes That likely was slightly "traumatic" for her, not in the "scarring for life" sense, but in the sense it was the biggest disruption, I imagine, in her life.

yeah. she likes doctors now, which is good.

@leslietownes The first book I wrote about a girl who wowed everyone she knew, when trying bowling the first time, I wrote during the week after I went bowling. Illustrations, and all! (Can 10 pages folded in half, with staples to bind the book, count as a "book"?)
@leslietownes Yay! That is very good.
Pediatric care, these days, is wonderful. I grew up with a family practice doctor, who helped deliver me and my siblings. He wasn't bad, but he looked like Abraham Lincoln!
And for some reason, I would leave feeling bad that my mom took me to the doctor, only because, while he'd prescribe medicine, he'd go over board reassuring my mom and I "not to worry, no big deal", leaving me feeling like "I'm sorry mom, I didn't know it was nothing!"
That's mini-me, very sensitive, from the start!

11:12 PM
there was a period after her cast and 3-year checkup where she wouldn't stop imitating a doctor at home. she wouldn't go to bed until every stuffed animal and sometimes also our live cat had received a "checkup"
she has a toy blood pressure cuff and stethoscope and other things. she was bothering everybody with them.

@leslietownes That's so sweet!

she also loves masking her stuffed animals. about half of the stuffed animals have masks on right now.

@leslietownes Awesome!
@leslietownes She's a strong girl, who is also nurturing. Great combo, and I'd say the same for any boy with that combo!

11:26 PM
@leslie, No ideas for a New Search phrase/title/slogan have surfaced. I'm not in any hurry, a solicited a number of people. We likely won't see much from @ParamanandSingh these days. Others are likely busy with classes, or what have you. I certainly do not want to twist arms for participation. I really do not like doing things unilaterally, (hence I'd fail as a mod).

I've never seen @AlexanderGruber's ghost in this room for 24 hours straight, either.

the mobile version of the chat is weird.

11:45 PM
@leslietownes Are you trying it now? I have never used my phone to access the site.

i'm not, it would probably crash my phone (from 2015). but people who report weird behavior tend to be using it on a phone or ipad and not a desktop computer.
