@watercollider Keep in mind that you'll not be the only one using those assets. They're useful to get something going during the development of your game, but you'll probably want to get your own set of models designed and created specifically for your game.

1:41 AM
I wonder what happened to TheMuffinCoder.
his models were so CUTE
holy shit he was a genius at that

I agree, yes!
Internet says he's been pretty inactive at what he was doing ;)
Can't remember where he hosted his models, and it doesn't appear to be listed on his profile.

1:57 AM
hi

Hello!

How are ya?

Tired.

awww....

And I blame thank DMGregory for it.

2:00 AM
LOL
whatcha up to?

Been playing The Return of the Ombra Dinn while I should have been doing other things.

Like sleeping.

ah, i see.

Oh noooo! Sorry!

2:03 AM
lol

@DMGregory Heh no worries, I'll get through this, someday :p

How goes the accounting?

Gotta catch up with work; I have called in sick yesterday and today cuz of the cold my kids brought us from daycare.
@DMGregory 42/60 up to now.

Wow, nice work! In the home stretch now.

2:07 AM
I have set the fate of some people, which appeared obvious, but it appears the game thinks otherwise, so I'll need to check a bit more.
@TheMattbat999 Yeah, kids do that ;)

that is why i don't want any

"hello daddy, let me kiss yo.." *aaachoooo*

none of that for me

@TheMattbat999 Heh kids are a big deal but that's the most fascinating thing I'll ever see ;) (And I'm not here to push anyone to have some, it is a big deal.)

my parents told me they want more grandkids. i told them to hold the ones they already have tight...

2:11 AM
@TheMattbat999 Argh... I've been lucky enough to not have felt any pressure from them.
Having kids to please someone else is not a good idea... :/

i think they were just kidding
but i was serious

(from them -> from my parents... obviously not from yours... :P)
That's okay, if they know what to expect :) (or what to not expect, actually)

yes
anyways i am happy to announce that after two years, my lazy butt is finally adding enemy death animations!

nice nice!

My sister and I are both queer so I think our folks have given up on grandkids. ;) But I'd like to raise kids one day - if I ever get into a stable enough situation and have my s**t together.

2:14 AM
So you're in blender and making those animation?

no, just using Unity's physics system to make their "corpse" fall backwards with a random rotation.
it is kinda fun to send small rats flying with a massive hammer

@TheMattbat999 Ah, well that's a first pass!
haha

i think i live the feature too much, ngl

Ooh, ragdolls!

wellllllllllllllllllll
kinda not really
their limbs don't flop around'

2:16 AM
Single-piece ragdolls then. ;)

@DMGregory Something like adoption? I don't know what are the options in your situation..

@DMGregory yes, but still fun to mess with

Most likely, yeah. Or raising a partner's kids from another partner.

i just highly doubt i will have anyone

mood.

2:19 AM
@TheMattbat999 Things can change. I've been single at least until I've been 18 yo, or something. I think.

@Vaillancourt maybe they will...

Oh, and I know someone that has been single until their 30's. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i have had dates, but eh..
ALSO i did make it to where my skeletal enemies blow apart

So it's ragdoll physics?

@TheMattbat999 Oooh, got a gif?

2:22 AM
You remove all the joints and give random forces to all the body parts?

no, it simply spawns a copy of the original body. they don't have animated joints :/
and lemme make a little clip real quick.
gonna take a second
don't worry, i am just horrible at my own game

@DMGregory That's fascinating! And good, in a way. My previous barber was gay but obviously had a relationship with a woman before because he had kids and all.
@TheMattbat999 You need more cheats ;)

@Vaillancourt i cheated myself to Max Lv, now i just gotta turn vid into gif...

@TheMattbat999 Cool! Can't you use something like ScreenToGif?

@Vaillancourt i... have that. i forgot about it, thanks!

2:37 AM
:)

there, it is converting it now

I'd accept a vid too. Not picky about format, just curious to see exploding skeletons!

(i probably should have just recorded directly, but the enemies are dead now)

Taking gifs that are accepted by imgur is an art :P

and you will see it in a sec, but i must warn about the ridiculous FPS i get in editor
it's only like, a fifth of what i get when the game is compiled/built

2:40 AM
I usually crunch mine down with Photoshop first.

@DMGregory ...you have photoshop. :P
The normal person cannot afford photoshop ;)

I've found it not awful since they moved to a subscription model.

Trena's having trouble with photoshop

That's still ~250US per year..

it hangs while saving
like fucking worst time right

2:44 AM
@Almo Yeah, agreed

:D

OK FINALLY
got it
just gotta finish processing

@DMGregory Perhaps if you use more than two products of their suites and the price is capped at 650US/year, that could be a bargain.

Yeah, I get a decent amount of use out of Photoshop and Illustrator for answers here, and side projects.
Probably nothing I couldn't do in GIMP, I just have never gotten used to its UI.

Oh, I totally understand. I'd be really happy with the software, but I don't use it enough to buy it.
Was happy with my cracked version of CS6 :P

2:54 AM
I got by on a copy of CS3 for a good while there.

But paying for it remove some hassle, I find.

i tried uploading it, and it stopped at 69% ;-;
AAAAHHH

GIMP ARGH
it's UI isn't worth getting used to
I use GIMP.
but I hate it every time

wait... there is a size limit...

@TheMattbat999 Yes, 2mb

3:05 AM
@Vaillancourt ok, i have another idea. One way or another, you will get to see this skeleton go poof!

@TheMattbat999 Yes; I'll see it tomorrow, though, as I need to go to bed :/

oki..
well, just scroll back up through chat for the link to the image later ig

Yes, no worries ;)

WAIT I GOT IT\
THERE YA GO
@Vaillancourt @DMGregory

@TheMattbat999 Hey that's nice!

3:11 AM
@Vaillancourt Thanks! I am unsure how i will do some of the larger foes, since creating just giving them a ragdoll effect won't work
cause, well, they would block door ways

Remove their colliders once they've settled so you can get through it? Or make them "melt into the floor" once they have settled?

oooooooooooo
that second reminds me of an effect in Castlevania
have them, like, burn up

Could work too ;)

Or make them go poof to dust once you touch them with a nice sprite/bilboard animation

3:20 AM
LOL
that is also possible
OR have sorta portal open up and swallow them, since the biggest enemies are magic constructs

I guess you have lots of options ;)

yus
i shall work on them soon enough!

Good luck :)
I'm off to bed, good night!

thank you!
gn!
i'll be back in a day or two with a gif revealing what i chose

3:41 AM
@TheMattbat999 Haha, brilliant!

1 hour later…
4:52 AM
@DMGregory Thanks!

8 hours later…
1:07 PM
Sweet, I got our first gold badge for C# :)

nwp
Something something "C# bad" joke here.

All C-languages Are B******s?
I think all languages are bad. But you can still get comfortable and productive with a terrible language - look how much we manage to accomplish with the smoldering overflowed dumpster heap that is English. 😉

1:29 PM
"I challenge you to design and implement a language in 2 weeks and have it come out as well as Javascript did" - Douglas Crockford

Say what you will about JS, it's demonstrated serious staying power.

nwp
It has also caused huge damage to the industry.
I'm getting along with TypeScript fairly well though.

Newer versions of JS are way, way better

nwp
It's unfortunate that some features don't quite work the way they should because compiling them down to JS is not possible, or has huge overhead.
It could probably be a much better language if it didn't compile to JS.

user92578
TS felt like magic with the string unions or whatever those were called

user92578
1:32 PM
Like the amount of deductions that VSCode was able to do based on those was insane

nwp
Yeah, that's what I'm doing. It's pretty neat.

Ooh, tell me more. I don't know anything about that feature - what do you use it for?

nwp
I need to figure out if there is an "async/await debugger", but I don't know what to search for.
What feature?

String unions and deductions

user92578
I swear I had some code that used that but I can't find it now ._.

nwp
1:38 PM
function f(x: string | number) {
    x.split() //error: x is a string or a number and numbers have no .split method
    if (typeof x === "number") return
    x.split() //x is a string and VSC knows that and this is fine
}
That's probably not what you asked for, but I find that impressive.

user92578
Yeah not exactly what I meant but a very similar concept, it seems like magic since it's not strongly typed

nwp
I spent some time changing static types at runtime like this in C++ and ... it was rather painful.

...wow. I agree, that is pretty magical!
I wish I could do stuff like that with C# generics. Trying to write something that would be line-for-line identical with either floats or ints as a generic to handle both is either complicated or impossible a lot of the time.

nwp
1:54 PM
The thing TS cannot do is take a template parameter and create a new instance of that type and I blame JS for that.
Inline interfaces also work out pretty well.

4 hours later…
5:25 PM
Lol. I installed ubuntu on an old laptop and now I don't remember the password...

hahasha

5:37 PM
I can't remember the pin for my old phone for the life of me. I replaced the phone with a new one right before I broke my knee, so I was away from it for several months during which time I'd ordinarily have done all my data back-up stuff.

Err I hope there was not too many important things on it..
mainly picture, I suppose?

Yeah. Still hoping I'll guess it right one day and be able to recover them.
It's running an older Android version, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has a cracker that can bypass it too...

heh that would not be a good news :P

user92578
6:16 PM
Say someone, not necessarily me, had an answer to this: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/184961/… But the answer was aqcuired perhaps via decompilation, which might be against an EULA somewhere or something... Does it seem like a bad idea for someone to post an answer stating that?

It does sound like a bad idea to post such an answer, but I don't know for sure

user92578
Yeah, that's what I was thinking...

user92578
Closed source tooling sucks.

How many game mods go against a EULA?

user92578
6:22 PM
Fair, but a bit different, and also still sketchy because the developers could choose to chase those

Hello!

So, uh, i added a death animation for the monstrous Cave Dragon
lemme get a clip of it, it is somewhat silly :p

@Tyyppi_77 Yes. I think the "worst" aspect in going with this is that Unity could change the way it does things internally, making the answer valid for only a subset of the versions available.

user92578
I think the anonymous user who contacted me is still a bit wary about posting an answer starting essentially with "This is what was found by doing something against Unity EULA"

Although they're not my favourites, we do have quite a few answers that simply assert a conclusion without revealing how that conclusion was reached...

6:31 PM
Big enemies in my game will slowly burn away

Nice!

Yeah, and, i don't think we're here to enforce EULAs. If Unity is annoyed, they'll contact SE which will take the post down.
@TheMattbat999 Nice! Do you lose health when you touch their burning bodies?

user92578
And/or sue the user who performed the activity against the EULA.

@Vaillancourt No, but could be an idea? But would be annoying to barely take down such a strong enemy to only step on it and die :P

user92578
One of the most fun mechanics I implemented in GunHero was burning enemies dropping their weapons and starting to run aimlessly in panic, making other enemies / players they touched also catch on fire.

6:35 PM
The terms do say...

> you may decompile the Unity Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) assemblies solely to inspect their functionality for purposes of understanding or improving performance of your Project Content or any editor extension to the Unity Software.
So I'd say this falls under "understanding or improving performance of your project content or editor extension" - if the salient bit is in the CLI assemblies.

user92578
I'm not sure the anonymous user knows which assemblies are exactly the CLI ones

@TheMattbat999 yes, it would be annoying :)

@Vaillancourt I will think about it tho, for now, i will try and wrap all of these animations. didn't realize just how many enemies i had added.

CLI would be any managed code. If they needed to decompile native binaries to C++ code or similar, then I think that is not covered by this permission.

user92578
In that case it sounds like posting an answer explaining the steps taken would be safe to post for the user

6:40 PM
I believe it should be OK. I doubt this port selection is something Unity considers a trade secret. (Of course, I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. I'm just speculating based on my understanding of the terms)

user92578
I don't quite understand why their managed code is closed source if decompilation is explicitly allowed for code reading

They do have substantial parts of the source published. May I ask what type the relevant bits are in? I can check if that's been published.
I was digging into their source for transforms and quaternions recently to answer some questions. ;)

user92578
I tried looking into their GitHub but found nothing with searching "web" or "gl"

user92578
They are under PlaybackEngines/WebGLSupport

user92578
Specifically UnityEditor.WebGL.Extensions.dll

6:47 PM
@TheMattbat999 An option here would be to associate the animation to the weapon you're using, e.g. if you have a "fire enabled" sword, then it burns like what you have, while if you have a cold weapon, it "freezed and shatter" somehow...

@Vaillancourt oooo sounds neat! i will also look into trying that!

Sorry I'm adding more work on your list :p

it's fine :]

The group noun for multiple game designers is "a scope creep of game designers" ;)

interesting

user92578
6:54 PM
There we go, I'll remember you guys in prison :)

p r i s o n

hahahaha

user92578
:D

7:00 PM
oh no
hiccups

Unity would send me to jail simply for the bullcrap code that runs my game.
and hiccups suck

Confession time! Why are each of us going to Unity jail?
I think this is one of my more egregious sins so far:
9
A: How can I get all DontDestroyOnLoad GameObjects?

DMGregoryHere's a cheeky little hackish method that works only in the Editor. We can't find the DontDestroyOnLoad scene by name, but every DontDestroyOnLoad'ed GameObject holds a reference to it. So, if we have a reference to just one such object (or create such an object) then we can get to all of them: ...

0
A: Destroying 1 of 2 GameObjects with that same script attached in UNITY

The Mattbat999Pretty simple. Have the one you don't wanna destroy with a public bool and check it true in the inspector: //other variables... public bool doNotDestroy; //other code... function OnTriggerEnter(Collider collision) { //other statments... if (collision.gameObject.name = /*name of needed object...

1
A: Can I force a manually created texture to not be divided with low quality?

The Mattbat999On the import setting of the image, you could try changing the setting, that by default says "Bilinear" (hope it is spelt correct), to "Point (no filter)". Also, there should be a setting that, by default, says "Compressed", to something else.

i mean, honestly, every post I have on Game Dev is probably a sin
@DMGregory

next time, make them cos ;)

There's this one too (I seem to have a theme of ritual sacrifice in my hacks)
https://twitter.com/D_M_Gregory/status/672973048899702784
@Vaillancourt If anything, they're probably tangents. ;)

7:08 PM
i might actually try and post something useful today

Oooh, ooh, this one's a life sentence I'll bet! twitter.com/D_M_Gregory/status/780780950208872448

that needs a lot of explanation for us lesser-folk

The compiling one?

Imagine you wrote some components in your game, and then released it. Then while your game is running, those scripts conspired to write some new components on the fly (maybe with player input), and compile them to use them as new game scripts that can be attached to objects in your game.

7:12 PM
that is insane

It opens the door to a form of self-modifying code, or untrusted plugins, user-generated scripts, etc. It's... a bit of a can of worms. I do not recommend it.
But it is super cool that it's possible. 😈

@DMGregory ;)

I had an idea to use it for a jam game, that's about being a Unity game developer. So you can write Unity code inside the game, and have it change the behaviour of the fictional game-within-a-game your character is developing.
But then you notice that the code can "escape" from the game-within-a-game world, and start altering things in the "real" world that your character inhabits, since it's all the same stuff in the game engine...
Going for kind of an existential horror, seeing the tenuous threads that hold together our fragile reality, kind of vibe. 😋

Sounds interesting, but above my pay-grade :P
