Same. :) Fortunately most of my day-to-day is email and Excel, so that hasn't been too negatively impacted (and I might have a bit more focus this way, even)

Using Remote Desktop / Citrix to do in-engine work or testing can be a bit of a complication though. :/

We're pretty security-focused, so that's been a tough sell for our org, outside of specially-approved laptops.

Our track record for leaks is.... not spotless... so I understand the reluctance. ;)

I don't like clouds

When you have a game installed on your machine, you can play without worrying that something breaks somewhere

When you use a cloud-based game/app, the connection can fail, or the cloud can fail, or the cloud owner will increase the price of their services

you control nothing here

cloud based gaming sucks ass. I don't want more latency in my controls. Unless it's turn-based... that's fine.

I guess cloud based games will need to be designed for high latency. Just like multiplayer games?

you can't substitute cleverness for input latency

at least the client knows what you want to do immediately

but if the client doesn't even know what your input is until many frames after you got it, the controls will necessarily be sluggish

It's one thing to shoot and miss due to latency. It's another to hit jump and jump later.

It's why Kinect games mostly could be played without input

at 250 ms input latency, they couldn't demand anything with any precision

Dance Central worked because it had scripted input, and could wait until the input came in then back-date it and see if it had matched.

you get negative feedback late, but that's ok.

worse, people who never played with 0 latency and only play on laggy systems won't know it's the input latency and not their own ineptitude.

@DMGregory I was going to ask how to approach class design for units when you are using components that will ultimately lead to dozens of permutations. I was initially planning to hardcode all of the permutations that I was going to allow. But that would be tedious and unmanageable. The more I thought about the more I thought it was exceedingly unnecessary.
