11:47 AM
My work is remote now, hello everyone

user92578
Welcome to the club

1:52 PM
Same. :) Fortunately most of my day-to-day is email and Excel, so that hasn't been too negatively impacted (and I might have a bit more focus this way, even)
Using Remote Desktop / Citrix to do in-engine work or testing can be a bit of a complication though. :/

user92578
Ooh yeah that sounds annoying, we got our work PCs moved home

2:20 PM
We're pretty security-focused, so that's been a tough sell for our org, outside of specially-approved laptops.

they stuck bitlocker on our drives, so everything is encrypted.
but they do still have to trust us not to put work files on a home computer

2:51 PM
Our track record for leaks is.... not spotless... so I understand the reluctance. ;)

3:10 PM
hahah I can understand THAT

3:56 PM
I use virtual machines for everything work-related. I don't let their software into my system!

user92578
What kind of software do you work on?

it's a set of custom compilers and debuggers that requires d
oops hit enter accidentally
requires dirty hacking with the system to work properly
such as downgrading system utilities and messing with bashrc

user92578
Right but the product is something that can be ran on a VM
VMs unfortunately aren't really usable in game dev, or at least so I've found

I have a VM with Windows 7 for some of my games

I'm curious to see what Stadia will do for our remote testing/demoing capability...

user92578
4:06 PM
Probably not much to those who don't have great internet at home :)

Might still be an improvement over what we get from remote desktop, though that's faint praise.

I don't like clouds
When you have a game installed on your machine, you can play without worrying that something breaks somewhere

user92578
The accessibility aspect is cool, no need for hyper hardware on your PC

When you use a cloud-based game/app, the connection can fail, or the cloud can fail, or the cloud owner will increase the price of their services
you control nothing here

user92578
Yes that indeed is how streaming works

user92578
4:16 PM
But basically I'll need to play games a shit ton before buying a new CPU and GPU becomes worth it over something like Stadia

4:42 PM
You ever type out a long question to ask only to realize the answer as you were thinking over how to ask the question clearly...
Anyway. Thanks for the help ;]

user92578
anytime

@brug Yes.

4:53 PM
Hello!

5:04 PM
cloud based gaming sucks ass. I don't want more latency in my controls. Unless it's turn-based... that's fine.

I guess cloud based games will need to be designed for high latency. Just like multiplayer games?

you can't substitute cleverness for input latency
at least the client knows what you want to do immediately
the server has to work out later how that interacts with everyone else
but if the client doesn't even know what your input is until many frames after you got it, the controls will necessarily be sluggish
It's one thing to shoot and miss due to latency. It's another to hit jump and jump later.
It's why Kinect games mostly could be played without input
at 250 ms input latency, they couldn't demand anything with any precision
Dance Central worked because it had scripted input, and could wait until the input came in then back-date it and see if it had matched.
you get negative feedback late, but that's ok.
worse, people who never played with 0 latency and only play on laggy systems won't know it's the input latency and not their own ineptitude.

5:22 PM
But 5g will solve it all, right?
And fry our brains, and make us sterile.

And muck with weather forecasting... :(
@brug That's why this room is tagged "rubber ducks" ;) It can still be worth asking & answering anyway, so next time someone has a similar question they can find it via search.

Oh, and probably steal all your data and send them to China.

hahah :D

@DMGregory I was going to ask how to approach class design for units when you are using components that will ultimately lead to dozens of permutations. I was initially planning to hardcode all of the permutations that I was going to allow. But that would be tedious and unmanageable. The more I thought about the more I thought it was exceedingly unnecessary.

Nice! I'd be interested in seeing the solution you come to. :)

5:36 PM
Nothing. I just decided that limiting the potential permutations was unnecessary.

^ Just came through my office game design chat - relevant to recent discussion. ;)
Sweet. No code is the best code. :D

i just found it as well

ohh nice

6:26 PM
Is Trump in the US perceived as becoming a dictator?

not by his cult, they don't see it that way
the rest of us... some are worried about it
I think he'll use the epidemic as an excuse to say the election in Nov isn't valid if he loses.

I don't even live there and I am worried about it.

yeah

Yes, something like that.

the signs are all there about impending dictatorship

Q: Why did Wisconsin Republicans oppose postponing the April 7th election despite COVID-19 shutting down nearly all polling places?

divibisanAfter last minute, party-line decisions by the US and Wisconsin Supreme Courts, Wisconsin will hold their presidential primary and a hotly-contested Supreme Court election tomorrow (April 7th) despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The state's Democratic governor has been pushing to delay the ele...

the answers to this are pretty scary

6:33 PM
Yes, they are!
Not sure if there is anything that can be done. I heard that Canada has witnessed tests of tampering with some elections from foreign countries, so I wouldn't be surprised this happens in the US too.

There has also been a very systematic replacement of government officials at every level to those that are loyalists.
It has been taking place in the military as well. Which should be even more alarming.
With the additional militarization and expanded zone of authority for his border control who report directly to him. All signs point to yes.

I'm sorry for you guys :/

6:48 PM
I just want out. But the borders are shutting down. That is getting increasingly unlikely.

Yes, and that kind of behaviour is also an issue (I don't blame anyone for it): the less opposition there is, the more power they get.

And we are seeing more and more suffering in response to opposition.

7:04 PM
Yep.
And of course, we won't do anything about it because Money.

Yup. The almighty dollar demands its human sacrifices.
