did you hear about what happened to nginx developers yesterday?

@trollingchar I heard something about it, someone lied, someone sold a company, or something to that effect? :P

a developer had a project and worked on it, and after 15 years he earned a lot of money, then a company where he worked suddenly remembers about it and says that all nginx belongs to that company, and police raids his office and arrests him

Did they give some warning or something? If they didn't do anything for 15 years, you can't just one day arrest someone out of the blue

Assuming that the project was public and the company was aware of it, I'm not familiar with nginx

The new UI on SE is worse than the old one. These bubbles about the question being locked or highly active should not be above the question itself, they are not so important. They should be hints, not distractions.

I don't understand why they try to fix what is working already

The appearance of a product is kinda related to marketing as well. I don't know how StackExchange handles it, but other products intentionally change their UI every so often, to appear better and updated (regardless if they actually are)

So even though I'd agree that if it works, don't change it, if a website remains the same after years, users might get bored of it or stop using it

but if a website changes, users might get angry and stop using it as well

I agree, but for the most part people get used to the new design, and stop complaining

It's one of those weird marketing things, where everyone seems to agree its not a good idea, yet when it happens a platform becomes more popular anyway

Numbers speak quite loud in such situations

"More popular" does not mean "better".

It does for the owner of the website, that earns more money by having more users

(Again this is not specific to StackExchange, as I'm not very familiar how it handles monetisation)

True, I'd say it qualifies for anything that has ads in it

including video games, but thankfully I can't think of a lot of examples where the UI has changed to a big degree in a video game

when I was developing the new UI, it was because many users said that something was wrong with the old one, not because of some abstract marketing thing that no one can explain

If you refer to the worms game you are making, its not really published yet, so it doesn't really count

but i have a real example

there was a RTS

they introduced a questionable game mechanic

the poll's results were that 60% players support it and 40% don't

they approved the mechanic and many users left forever

I think the poll was written in such manner intentionally to justify that mechanic. Beginners tend to vote up for each change without thinking.

I'm not surprised to hear that, it's one of the reasons I avoid updating games, especially ones that are "single player offline"

After so many apps taking away features after an "update", or swapping things around, or being forced to update, I feel less motivated to update

Software that is always online is kind of an exception, for security reasons

I don't like that "auto-update" feature in browsers which can not be disabled

I might be wrong, but I think they dont auto-update on linux. At least for firefox, I don't think it has ever updated on me without me actively doing it

When you open a tab and it says "Oops, we have updated your browser". Yes firefox on linux also does this. And that "Oops" really irritates. Even changing the configs doesn't help.

That interesting, I've been using firefox for over a year now on linux, and never had that happen

I always update it through the package manager

But maybe they fixed it in some update, because I'm no longer seeing this

it requires a browser restart so yes it does

I'm pretty confident that when I update it through the package manager, it updates and I see the error "Firefox has been updated and needs to restart"

The most terrifying thing is that even you don't update the software it will eventually deprecate

and you will be forced to update it

You at least have the option to update to keep using it, or change to another software

for online software (like a browser) I can understand it to some degree
