8:52 AM
did you hear about what happened to nginx developers yesterday?

2 hours later…
10:27 AM
@trollingchar I heard something about it, someone lied, someone sold a company, or something to that effect? :P

a developer had a project and worked on it, and after 15 years he earned a lot of money, then a company where he worked suddenly remembers about it and says that all nginx belongs to that company, and police raids his office and arrests him

Oh wow
Did they give some warning or something? If they didn't do anything for 15 years, you can't just one day arrest someone out of the blue

10:43 AM
@TomTsagk there were no warnings

That doesnt sound right ... aren't you supposed to take this to court instead of calling the police?
Or at least let the person know that they should pay some fine or something?

@TomTsagk this is not going to work

What country is this?

This is my country.

I'm not sure how the law works there, but it sounds so wrong

10:46 AM
yes it is

In most courts, this would have rules in favour of the developer, because the company did nothing for 15 years
Assuming that the project was public and the company was aware of it, I'm not familiar with nginx

11:36 AM
The new UI on SE is worse than the old one. These bubbles about the question being locked or highly active should not be above the question itself, they are not so important. They should be hints, not distractions.
I don't understand why they try to fix what is working already

The appearance of a product is kinda related to marketing as well. I don't know how StackExchange handles it, but other products intentionally change their UI every so often, to appear better and updated (regardless if they actually are)
So even though I'd agree that if it works, don't change it, if a website remains the same after years, users might get bored of it or stop using it

but if a website changes, users might get angry and stop using it as well

I agree, but for the most part people get used to the new design, and stop complaining
It's one of those weird marketing things, where everyone seems to agree its not a good idea, yet when it happens a platform becomes more popular anyway
Numbers speak quite loud in such situations

"More popular" does not mean "better".

It does for the owner of the website, that earns more money by having more users
(Again this is not specific to StackExchange, as I'm not very familiar how it handles monetisation)

11:57 AM
this is not even specific to websites

True, I'd say it qualifies for anything that has ads in it
including video games, but thankfully I can't think of a lot of examples where the UI has changed to a big degree in a video game

when I was developing the new UI, it was because many users said that something was wrong with the old one, not because of some abstract marketing thing that no one can explain

If you refer to the worms game you are making, its not really published yet, so it doesn't really count

okay(
but i have a real example
there was a RTS
they introduced a questionable game mechanic
the poll's results were that 60% players support it and 40% don't
they approved the mechanic and many users left forever
I think the poll was written in such manner intentionally to justify that mechanic. Beginners tend to vote up for each change without thinking.

12:16 PM
I'm not surprised to hear that, it's one of the reasons I avoid updating games, especially ones that are "single player offline"
After so many apps taking away features after an "update", or swapping things around, or being forced to update, I feel less motivated to update
Software that is always online is kind of an exception, for security reasons

I don't like that "auto-update" feature in browsers which can not be disabled

I might be wrong, but I think they dont auto-update on linux. At least for firefox, I don't think it has ever updated on me without me actively doing it

When you open a tab and it says "Oops, we have updated your browser". Yes firefox on linux also does this. And that "Oops" really irritates. Even changing the configs doesn't help.

That interesting, I've been using firefox for over a year now on linux, and never had that happen
I always update it through the package manager

But maybe they fixed it in some update, because I'm no longer seeing this

12:23 PM
Does it always show a notification when it does?

@TomTsagk hm.........
it requires a browser restart so yes it does

I'm pretty confident that when I update it through the package manager, it updates and I see the error "Firefox has been updated and needs to restart"

The most terrifying thing is that even you don't update the software it will eventually deprecate
and you will be forced to update it

That's another topic
You at least have the option to update to keep using it, or change to another software
for online software (like a browser) I can understand it to some degree

@TomTsagk or WRITE YOUR OWN!!

12:32 PM
But there's always browsers out there that you can use that update rarely
Well, good luck with that :P
Good luck supporting javascript, which is the biggest obstacle
I love text-based browsers, wish they had more support from websites

I don't plan to do this with browsers, but I will do this with games

You mean text-based games?

no, worms games
and clones

ah

I'm not satisfied with them
except Worms Armageddon and Worms 4 which are good

12:43 PM
That's fair, usually on games, I like creating something new
Worms Armageddon was so amazing

I still play it sometimes

have you ever thought of making a new kind of game? like a gameplay that you came up with or something like that?

Oooh have you made something like that already? I like to see new things

It's yet to be made.

12:48 PM
Fair enough, I like the mystery too :P

3 hours later…
3:32 PM
Friday!

nwp
Friday 13th.

Oh, right!

Time for the friday dance!

What's the Friday dance?

It looks like that

3:45 PM
Oh my!
They all look happy :p
Almo will like us for those gifs ;)

Haha yeah that's how you do it!

4:29 PM
Funny: at some point in the past, I noticed that a user did not come anymore in chat. I saw today that they deleted their account.

Oh :/
Hope everything is alright?

Me too, but I honestly don't have any way to know!

nwp
People who get hit by a bus tend to not delete their account. Probably alright and it's all Monica's fault.

What if someone pointed a gun at them and asked them to delete it?

@TomTsagk "and never go back to StackExchange again"

nwp
4:33 PM
"You can take my life, but not my account!"

"Not my internet points! Take my money instead!"

I wonder how often there is rep smuggling...

nwp
You should declare War on Illegal Rep™.

It was bound to happen, rep is getting too precious

@nwp Yeah.. ♦'s job!

4 hours later…
8:36 PM
You know when you'd like to be slacking off at work but you can't?

9:06 PM
hahah
our party is tonight
so very little work done this afternoon

2 hours later…
10:50 PM
Haha yeah I guess so!
