Great! The SVN server does not respond! I'll have a hard time working remotely!

1:41 AM
:D

@AlexandreVaillancourt sounds bad

@TheMattbat999 Yep.
And obviously, because it's SVN, no one will be able to work until it's back up again.
Apparently, the switch died.

@AlexandreVaillancourt ouch

12 hours later…
1:35 PM
is it possible to do alpha blending when i cant change the rendering order....i use a scene graph as base.
it gives me the order..

1:46 PM
There seems to be not a lot of users able to answer your question right now :/

2:19 PM
Hey, everybody!

Hello2

@AlexandreVaillancourt Did ya ever get that server to work right?

@TheMattbat999 I'm not the one in charge. The guy who's in charge found an old switch laying around at work and could replace it. But they'll have to buy a new one for the job.
That allows us to work, at least!

Better than nothing!

2:24 PM
Yep!
And now we know that we have something to fix,.
Just like my fridge :P

Ah well. I am sitting here waiting on a thunderstorm to pass. Don't wanna be working then BOOM lights out and unsaved data lost!

@TheMattbat999 Why don't you work but save often?

@AlexandreVaillancourt that is smart. I just get to rolling and forget to save often! Storms about passed anyway!

If that happens often, you could also save up and buy yourself an UPS :P

2:35 PM
uninterruptible power supply
a fat-ass battery pack that gives you enough time to save work and shut down if the power goes out

2:51 PM
That's nerd stuff.
At least if you have one at home ;)

3:12 PM
This is my Boxer, Bo.

@TheMattbat999 [pats]
On Christmas I got to meet and make friends with a rescue dog who is usually freaked out by new people. They became relaxed around me within half an hour, and then I got to pat them until they were drooping to sleep in my lap. All of it was wonderful and apparently pretty rare according to his owner, which felt extra special. :D

@doppelgreener Awww....
Bo is... pretty lazy sometimes, but is extremely friendly. Will always try to lick you and watch you when you have food :P
And now my other boxer is licking my leg to death :)

Does he help you with the goats?

3:27 PM
No. I can't let him off in the field. He would try to eat them. One got their head stuck in the fence and he was chewing on it's face.

Ok, this seems counter productive.

Ok.
My bad

I mean, the dog chewing on the goat's face is not productive, when you want healthy goats :)

Oh. Ok!
Oh yeah, and the male sheep we had at the time also made that goat's day awful...

3:44 PM
Oh :/

Yeah... let's just say that sheep fell in love pretty quick :|

4:36 PM
hi

4:46 PM
@Jimmy I actually meant how do I create a server

Hi. I'm on a train and cannot Google this for you but you should just search for "tcp listener in Java" or something similar

I probably will cover this in my tutorial but I was interested
@Jimmy I will explain this properly
I have a copy of a program on every computer
They connect to a server which is ?

One of the most is the server

@Jimmy Where do I put the server

I mean one of your programs on one of your computers is the server
When it is running that is the server. You don't need any further putting.

4:58 PM
@Jimmy So the computer has to be on 24/7
@Jimmy Is there other places you can put the server

Yes, on someone else's computer

@Jimmy Can you put it on an internet space

Like you can pay for access to a cloud computer and sometimes the small ones are free
aws has a free micro tier, for instance

thanks
@Jimmy and then you use a sniffer to connect to the server

uh no, there's no place for a sniffer in this equation
your program connects to the server
I guess you could use something like netcat or telnet as a fake client to make sure you can actually connect to the server

5:14 PM
@Jimmy then what is a sniffer

can you not google that
from wikipedia: "A packet analyzer (also known as a packet sniffer) is a computer program or piece of computer hardware that can intercept and log traffic that passes over a digital network or part of a network."
are you "intercepting and logging traffic"? Y: you are using a sniffer. N: you are not using a sniffer

the video above might be interesting
@Jimmy I probably will use a sniffer to gather data about what is passing across the network

A sniffer is kind of like a debugger. You don't start off intending to use it, but it's very handy when things go wrong and you need to figure out why

@DMGregory hi

Hello

5:23 PM
@DMGregory how are you doing

Fine thanks.

@TheMattbat999 We were talking about servers and connecting computers over wifi

5:37 PM
@Jimmy and then I use a database in java to store the usernames on the server, right?

that's one option, yes

are they any other options?
apart from storing the usernames in java database

Text files?

@AlexandreVaillancourt Hmm.. good idea

Yay! Added a snow and blizzard effects to my game!

5:48 PM
@TheMattbat999 gif please

@TheMaskedRebel I don't know how to make a gif.

@TheMaskedRebel I don't have photoshop, nor do I need it

@TheMattbat999 Image please

I like to use LICEcap for gif captures on Windows ( licecap.en.softonic.com )

5:52 PM
@TheMattbat999 Can you not edit trivial typos on ping posts

@TheMaskedRebel sorry

@TheMattbat999 Can I see an image of your snow
@TheMattbat999 It's fine :)

@TheMaskedRebel snow and blizzard effects in the frozen wastes of Solsavire

@TheMaskedRebel better shot
@TheMaskedRebel gif through ScreenToGif

6:08 PM
That's cool!

Thanks

6:52 PM
@DMGregory Are you guys allowed to work remotely from time to time?

I did it while I was out with my knee injury, but it's not a regular thing.

May I ask why not (out of curiosity)?

For my role in particular as a designer, a lot of the job is coordinating with lots of folks, so it's not something I can do as effectively remotely.

@DMGregory Yeah, ok, that's understandable!
Slack is useful, but face to face is better!

7:10 PM
at my old job we had a few telepresence robots sitting around the office, never saw a single person using them :)
what worked for us was conference rooms with the TV / room sound system hooked up to Google Hangouts that anyone could easily dial into remotely
if you needed face to face time

@Jimmy Oh, I did not know this was a thing. This seems.. odd.. :P

in theory, you could just roll your roboself over to someone's desk or to a meeting. But why would you do that when you can just IM them or project yourself onto the projector? :P

@Jimmy Yeah. And having the robot driving around with your face on it seems hmm.. Futurama-ish.

7:27 PM
I'm considering building one for fun and to annoy my cats remotely
2

That's an interesting challenge for a noble cause!

2 hours later…
9:40 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt Team meeting reminded me, we've also had folks work remotely for a few weeks or months when they've had to move away from the studio for various reasons.
