12:00 AM
It's good if you want to make that type of game.

ok sweet

woah time flies

ooook?

i thought i came here yesterday, but it seems there've been some days in between

12:10 AM
hey John McDonald

RPG maker is pretty good if you want to make "old school" japanese rpgs

And back
For a little while.

yeah that was the style i was getting at kinda like pokemon

you'll probably need a few megabytes of space, though
2

Looks like I didn't miss anything interesting....

12:11 AM
haha yeah no

Hey @PabloAriel

@thedaian i have something like 150 Mb left that enough

@JohnMcDonald how u doing? how was the trip?

The trip was amazing. Food in China is fantastic

12:13 AM
I swear, you travel constantly @John.

you went to China, cool!

I gained weight while I was there, then lost all of that and then some in Nepal

@JohnMcDonald you dident eat dog did you :P

@DeveloperAaron probably just barely enough

hah, no

12:13 AM
@thedaian yes!!! :D
@JohnMcDonald good

I should do something to gain weight

@MindWorX This was the only trip recently, it's just that Pablo hasn't had a chance to catch up since I got back

from the RPG Maker VX system requirements page: 100MB available hard disk space

Ah. :P

YES!!!

12:15 AM
right, sorry, I've been kinda lost

ok so its all installed now and i have a problem

gaming too much

heh, I can't blame you
I'm at around 60-70 hours in BF3

lol nice
I was playing minecraft, I didn't knew it

@thedaian rgss-rtp standard is installed but it keeps on popping up with the error message

12:16 AM
now I'm coding some libs to make a minecraft clone, I liked the game

@PabloAriel Oh nice, that can be a real time sink eh?

I finally settled on the theme for my game. :D

yea it is, I try to not get too addicted, but had some weeks of fun, couldn't help it

It's going to be themed pretty much just like Stargate: Atlantis, but instead of stargates, you'll be traveling to other dimensions with portals/rifts.

yeah, I had a lot of fun with the train system in my server
@MindWorX nice

12:17 AM
@DeveloperAaron so, what version of rpg maker did you get, and did you read and follow the instructions for installing it?

@MindWorX now you're thinking with portals!

@thedaian did everything by the book

@thedaian I'm actually planning a portal gun, as part of an easter egg, Aperture Science inspired realm. :P

lol

12:19 AM
@JohnMcDonald I made a few things, some machines, then I tried to copy a house from a picture of a real house to minecraft cubes, it worked nice enough, and then I drawn something, in a 100x100x50 space, then I didn't want to play anymore for a while
I think I've played like a month

Well, gotta head to bed. Got a day shift coming up in... 4 hours... Oh boy...

i've been in and out of minecraft addition for... a long time now.

4 hours x_X

have fun

ah yeah. One of my last creations was a lighthouse, complete with a "rotating light"

12:21 AM
@thedaian I'd got more hardcore if I had the time >_<

You should see how many redstone torches that one took

ahh cool, I've seen one in a video, they look nice

Oh, and a kick-ass "shifting" cart delivery system

that must be really big too
haha nice
how's the shifting?

<3 waves

12:22 AM
The second image there

most of my minecraft worlds were short term though. i lost my original infinite world and kind of wandered around various servers for a while, improving the transit systems when i could

good =)

I've been too lazy to make a youtube of it, but not lazy enough to not write about it

I didn't play much with the minecarts yet
well it's better to write about it, I think

Oh man, that's like the best part

12:23 AM
high five, openttd!

:D
High five

I never got enough iron to build huge minecart systems
it's easier now that I can raid abandoned mineshafts for supplies

and these are some pics about my minecrafting days picasaweb.google.com/101852552240853074237/…

A few of us on our server did a craptonne of mining and building: minecraft.writhem.com

12:26 AM
now I want a similar system for prototyping

wow thats really good aye :D

Our whole train system was underground, so you have to click the Cave mode to see any of it

I wish I had so mcuh time XD

Yeah, I wish you could buy time... wait...

i would show you my castle that i made :d
its like almost 500 blocks high and 750 wide

12:29 AM
yeah, most of what you see there was built by my friends

its built half way into the ground

that would be great, buying some time, so my life gets longer...

i got really bored at work so i started playing minecraft

my youth

12:31 AM
one of the walls is pure obsidian

first minecraft world i ever really messed with: thedaian.dreamhosters.com/sa/mc_map_2.png (ages ago, prior to infinite worlds)

it took like a whole day

I made a machine to make obsidian in my survival game and made a lot of obsidian

and a map of the first infinite world i had with a 1km road to nowhere: thedaian.dreamhosters.com/sa/minecraft/map1.png

@PabloAriel: buying a person's time happens all the time... I think it's called a "job"

12:32 AM
ah but I want to do everything myself

you can make obsidian? I thought you had to mine lava for it

I don't want other people to play for me

I mean, if you pay yourself your salary, you can stop going to work
thus buying your own time back.

@Jimmy I'm working on it

12:33 AM
how did you make the machine @PabloAriel

:) yeah, @Jimmy got it

you can get some lava sources and then drop water on it

yeah but you said you made a machine

(redstone plus water plus lava plus magic plus whatever)

yeah, but you still have to bring up the buckets of lava right?

12:34 AM
my machine just allows to let a water current into a big pool where you comfortably place the lava, then turn a lever and doors closes and water flows

i would say so

yoiu can always drop water over a natural pool of lava

I prefer to just mine obsidian underground -- dump a layer of water over the obsidian you're mining and it usually prevents it from falling into the next layer.

but you can then leave some lava sources in the lower layers

you could always use sticky pistons

12:35 AM
yes but I hadn't when I built it

gtg ttyl!

later =)

ok bye
do you guys use any mods?

I didn't knew minecraft last month
no I don't, yet

12:38 AM
oh :D they can be so fun

I guess

theres one called the weeping angels mod
have yo seen doctor who

but now I don't think I play much minecraft until my client is working >_<
mm no I don't remember

the state things
statue

1:02 AM
ok boys i think its time for lunch :D

1:38 AM
hey all

hey again

hows the girl thing going?

shit
i got a little bored so i Downloaded pokemon hacking tools and im editing pokemon

2:01 AM
ha, still at work?

yeah
i am fucking done with girls
for like a month or so

yeah, it sucks man. Sorry you're going through a rough patch.

yeah nah tis all good

haha, "for like a month or so"
date guys for a month
tell your ex she turned you gay

2:18 AM
At work, I've got two gorgeous 24'' 1920X1200 monitors...
then I come home to my very 'bleh' 19'' 1280X1024

ive got 1 24" 1920X1200 moniter and an aleinwar laptop

@justnS you should work a while with my 17'' crt then your 19'' one will feel awesome

hahaha

so true
They let me pick between an alienware and a dell precision

2:24 AM
oh of course, the dell precision
:)

But then they murdered it with encrypting the harddrive
so now i have an eMachine

haha
FML

2:48 AM
Working on a corridor 3D flight sim. Trying to get the 'feel' on the controls right, but its still not perfect. Anyone know of any games like this on steam that utilize a controller?
Think 'StarFox 64' for the feel of the 3D flight corridor

idk sorry

3:07 AM
thats just confuzing :(

3:48 AM
@PabloAriel Working with a 2560x1600 30" monitor, will make everything else feel like crap. ;)

4:09 AM
haha
@MindWorX lol thats soo true

2560x1600? dang, I bet you dropped some stacks for that

HE PROBABLY DID

Actually, it was a gift from my ex. :P

wtf
lucky bitch

But it was still expensive, ~$1500.

4:19 AM
Can I have her/his phone number? ;)

Haha

hahaha
classsic

Nice timing. :P

it was aye
what did you do for that

Turn 24? :P

4:20 AM
ok then

mustve been hard to turn 24 :P

As you can see, I severely needed it.
I keep running out of screen estate when reversing.
That's a screenshot from my old dual 19" setup.

yeah i mean all that cheating
:P
should hook up 3 moniters

That's my new setup, shows the difference in screen estate.

4:24 AM
niice i see the warcraft 3 map editor there

@Developer_Aaron It's actually nothing to do with cheating, Cheat Engine is just a great and light weight debugger.

i know

You done much WC3 development?

yeah i have made like tonnes of maps but i mainly specialise in creating vampirisim maps

Ever heard of Reinventing the Craft?

4:25 AM
yeah i heard alittle bit about that

That was my project, and the screenshot shows me working on it. :P

yeah nice how long did that take you?

On that screenshot, I just found out I could modify abilities on the run, like change their duration, their damage, everything.
Oh, it was a project I worked on for years.
It's abandoned now, since I wanted to move to something I could actually make a living of instead.

are you serious
ahh yeah nice

But all my years hacking has taught me a bunch of useful things. Like memory consumption and optimizations.

4:29 AM
yeah yeah

Each tile in my game engine only takes 4 bytes of space in memory, which means I can have 250+ million tiles in 1GB of memory, which is the internal limit I set.
On top of that, I have procedurally infinite worlds and filebacked worlds.

yeah aye

Sounds nice. Is there a homepage where I can take a look at what you are working on?

Latest debug has a procedural world, Latest stable has a static world loaded from a png file.
I'm still in engine development, so don't expect awesome graphics and stuff like that. ;)
And expect bugs.
Also, left mouse fires a laser, right mouse fires a projectile. AD and Space for movement.
Later W and S will be for climbing.

Similar to a steampunk/sci fi terraria?

4:33 AM
Going to be scifi when I get a proper artist. Stargate: Atlantis inspired.
So current/near future technology, but you'll find lots of other technology as you explore.
The engine supports multiple realms, so you can have your own home realm, and hundreds of alternate realms where physics will be completely different, and you find other types of tiles.
One example of an alternate realm may be somehow getting to the moon orbiting your home planet. Lower gravity, no oxygen realm, barren of resources.

nice idea

Yeah, I think it'll work out great.
Bring along my Circuit system which is something like Redstone from Minecraft and Wiremod from Garrys Mod, and you can do all sorts of interesting things.

Terraria's proved there market for this sort of thing and the scifi will make it stand out from the flood of minecraft clones, so I like it.

interesting :D should turn out good
i hate work
im still at work

I like work. I hate college. College is always :(

4:41 AM
@ClassicThunder I agree, the scifi theme will give this a new look, and make it look like less of a clone.
Also, I'm adding a bunch of dynamic objects, like conveyor belts, a railing system, pistons and moving platforms, which is all things Terraria is missing, which is things that are important for a 2D platform game.
Dynamic objects is my current todo. So I've just reworked the physics a bit, and the next step is adding something like pistons or moving platforms to test things.

collio

A lot of those things are coming Dec 1st. Terraria is adding something very similar to the red stone from minecraft.
It will be interesting to compare the two when yours is done. Terraia was made with XNA also.

Yeah, Terraria inspired me, and after Tiy was a douche after I offered my help for free, I decided to make my own game, better.
Did you know that Terraria has a limit of 40mil tiles? And that's if you hack the engine.
That's two large worlds, and you can't have more.
And they're talking about implementing a system similar to my multiple realms thing.
Going to require a lot of refactoring to get that off the ground.
Well, off to work, I may be back later.
waves

later

3 hours later…
7:39 AM
@mindworx: your game seems pretty good. the most amazing thing is that I was digging for more than 20 mins and your application almost didn't consume any memory! also it was still fast enough, after that much going down.
but the pattern created are all most all like each other. it would be nice if you add more types of tiles (like gold/ lead/ silver/ carbon/ platinum/ oil/ lava/ ...) which behave different.
for example fireing projectile near oil tiles, can explode them, which will destroy huge area.
you can get more idea, from [motherload game](www.miniclip.com/games/motherload/en/).

6 hours later…
1:46 PM
@Gajet, Yeah, I'm planning on adding lots of tiles. I have room for 254 base types(dirt, stone, metals, etc.), 254 over types(grass, ice, etc.) and 254 background types.
The limit can be increased at the cost of memory, but my engine is getting more and more effecient, so another byte wont be a problem.
The only reason I don't have all sorts of tiles right now, is because I only just recently settled on the theme for the game, and because I'm going to focus on tiles once I hit the gameplay stage, where I start making the different combinations of tiles, and what tiles should be used for.
Each tile needs a purpose, if they don't have one, I need to reconsider why I even want the type in the game.
Metals are obvious since they're the base for much of the things you're going to craft. Dirt has the purpose of being a filler type. Stone is a harder filler type, with a few uses. Sand can be used to make glass, which in turn can be used for an array of things.

2:11 PM
@MindWorX Did you check DwarfFortress' block types for inspiration? :)

I did not. Do they have a wiki?

Nice. Definitely worth keeping in mind.

Oh, and ores and gems too ..

1 hour later…
3:37 PM
Boom!

Headshot!

Shit just got real!

Now we're mixing fiction

Good morning ... Western Hemisphere-ians

I'm not western.
Well, I guess that depends on where you're located.

3:47 PM
Good evening?

It's evening.

Good TIME OF DAY!

Good evening, @MindWorX

But I'm heading to bed. Turns out 1 hour of sleep in 26 hours isn't optimal.

I've heard that before.

3:49 PM
Lucky my passengers didn't know that. ;)
Anyways, cya. waves

ha, later man.

4:40 PM
So...
That didn't work very well.
About 5 minutes after I went to bed, I got company.

2 hours of sleep in 27 hours
oh

well
take a handful of no-doze

@MindWorX Cats? Girlfriend? Other attention-grabbing entities?

3rd choice.
A friend who owed me money. And in a few minutes, another friend who has no money is coming over to get some dinner.

take money from friend A, give to friend B so they can buy dinner, go back to bed

4:51 PM
leet problem solving skills, @thedaian

Considering the money I just got back would cover dinner for two weeks, I think it's cheaper to just give dinner tonight, and sleep later. :P

if money from friend A > cost of dinner for friend B, give friend B enough money to cover dinner for one meal

So I'm stuck on some stuff here; a bit tangential, but I'll take my chances.
Working on a ray tracer (for fun!)

Fancy word.

But having some troubles with my ray/sphere intersection code.

4:54 PM
hah, i see what you did there

I think it has to do with my ray transformations.
And I'm getting frustrated, and that's no good.

I have 2D ray code. :P
I should have a blog or something for my random thoughts.
The assembly trick I did is something I haven't seen anywhere before.
Even though there's a lot of people requesting __fastcall help when using C# for things like injection.

@MindWorX I'd read it.

I guess when I start my Legeria devblog, I could also throw random thoughts in it under a different tag.

@MindWorX: inline IL would be cool too

5:03 PM
Can't you do something like that with Emit?
I've never used Emit before, I'm just assuming stuff.

hmmm perhaps I haven't used it either

Did you see my __fastcall trick @Jimmy?

Bah.
I think I've found the problem.

It's both unbelievably crazy and awesome at the same time.

I've been using premultiplied transformation matrices.
But it seems as if that is in fact a bad idea, maybe.

5:05 PM
@MindWorX yeah I saw it

5:26 PM
Bah
I'm going to have to reduce my transformations to a stack of standard matrices.

stacks are nice

1 hour later…
6:59 PM
Arhglbargl!
Why won't this work?

7:10 PM
Cause you're a murloc?

You're thinking of "mrgl".
The Murloc goes "Mmmmmrrrrrgl!"

7:23 PM

Q: Line/Ray-intersection not working as expected

Williham TotlandI've been working on cobbling together a ray tracer. You know, for fun. So far most things are going as planned, but as soon as I started transforming my test spheres, it all went awry. The fundamental concept is using one of standard shapes as origin, transforming the camera rays into object sp...

Hey, anyone experienced with Flash/AS3 around?

1 hour later…
8:47 PM
@MindWorX hey im back

9:22 PM
hey all
anyone around?

Barely

tredub
man it's been like a year lol, how you doing man?

Putting one foot in front of the other

im back

lol
wb
BRB one sec

9:30 PM
ok

Back, so do any of you guys use flash still?

kinda
no as much as i used to

i think XNA is the main choice for a lot of people in here right now

I haven't looked at flash in quite a while

my buddy and I are going to be using unity but before that we want to get the fundamentals under our belt with flash

9:33 PM
yeah
umm unity i use and it mainly runs on javascript

yea

yes! :D

there's.... quite a bit of difference between unity and flash, seems like it'd be better to just dive right into unity

yeah it is ithats pretty much what i did

yeah I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good short references or literature on flash games

9:38 PM
nah sorry

and your opinions of working from scratch or utilizing a framework

i'd probably use flixel or flashpunk, myself
and i'm pretty sure both of those have tutorials

i used a framework but i comes down to personal preferance

yeah I will research into them and then figure out which way is the best to go
unity will be fun though

9:43 PM
3D modeling is the ez part, wish I was a better dev lol

yeah same
dosent everyone

@Twinborn seriously, just start with unity. if you're a 3d modeler, then it's a better option all around, and there's not enough similarity between flash and unity to make it worthwhile to actually learn flash if you'd rather use unity

yeah true eh

10:31 PM
anyone here still

not really

yeah true
are you like a moderator or something

nope
just really really good at watching the chat

sup
god I love canabalt :D

10:57 PM
@Twinborn ok then

11:12 PM
@DeveloperAaron okay what my friend

ok then

?

ok then

11:44 PM
yep cause im retarded
