While it's not medically dangerous, some alternative medicines are exuberantly expensive and thus harmful in a financial sense. I'm not saying that's a given (I wouldn't care to judge want someone does with their disposable income), but a close family member ended up taking a second mortgage to fund an alternative medicine course. Their spouse, in the "pro-science but it's not replacing actual medicine" camp (much like your answer suggests), was left with a stellar debt (their partner died for a completely unrelated reason). Finances do not outweigh medical "ideas", but there is a limit. — Flater 1 min ago

@Astralbee: I'm aware, but the cost is not always negligible, depending on your financial situation. Like I said, if it's disposable income, I fully agree with your answer. But once you tread into the territory of spending money that was needed for other necessities; this becomes more of a problem (and thus more of a reason to be concerned when you see it happen). The difference between a placebo and a scam that fools you is just how much money you're spending on it. The emperor's new clothes are funny to observe, but not if he trades away the kingdom for them. — Flater 57 secs ago

+1 for offering the possibility that others don't have as much money as you. They might feel that because of all the treats, they should indeed return the favor, but they don't have the same finances as OP and might feel burdened by all this "debt" piling up. Maybe they don't want coffee as often as you. When doing unorganized stuff like this (i pay this now, he will pay next time), you always risk that one will pay more than another and that some tensions will appear, even if the initial intention is good. For example I don't like to do such things, I pay mine and you pay yours. no confusion — Manuki 1 min ago
