1:47 AM
the flash movie just lost its director. not really a big loss. he's a shit writer and this was his first director gig.

serious question
whats the most famous older sci fi book
off the top of your head

something jules verne
not sure which of his is older
or princess of mars by ERB

not dune
>.>

not in the least
dune was 1965

by older i ment
not in the last a10-20

1:55 AM
yeah, i'd stil do with anything by verne or burroughs or asimov or bradbury

that normal people would know
wow
AWTREYTA
everyone failed me tonight

i litterally had never heard of ANY of them until this site, other then the guy who made time machine

hg wells

dune to me is the single most famous sci fi book, and the internet agrees but no one here does

user132126
2:18 AM
STING

user132126
>_>

the internet agrees
im justified

by "most famous sci-fi book" you aren't counting Lord of the Rings?

thats fantasy
not counting fantasy

I would probably rank 2001 ahead of Dune. Maybe Stranger in a Strange Land.
any sci-fi geek worth the name would say Foundation

2:30 AM
have never heard of eather of those
foundation ive only heard of because of mos

you're an utter failure as a sci-fi fan.
how in the name of god do you know Dune but not 2001?

BECAUSE DUNE HAS MOVIES
its far more famous

2001 IS A BETTER AND MORE FAMOUS MOVIE

when you google best sci-fi
dune is number 1

user132126
"Best" != famous.

2:34 AM
I just googled "best sci-fi" and not one result said dune.

user132126
@KutuluMike You have to remove the "-dune" part

first result
best sci-fi book
on google

NPR says #1 lord of the rings #2 The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
rotten tomatoes says #1 ET

et isnt a bok

user132126
Ender's Game, Childhood's End, I, Robot are all ones I read early on. You can find them almost anywhere.

user132126
2:35 AM
As in, public school libraries.

i figured enders game was more famous
because its current
and has a very current movie

and has been around for some 30 years

late 80s
and hes re-written it about 10 times

user132126
Ah, I know it.

user132126
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

user132126
2:36 AM
or The Time Machine

books, yes. short story since the late 70s

no NORMAL person has read those books
let alone even heard about them

no normal person has read dune

user132126
hahaha

most "normal" people havent read dune

2:37 AM
sci-fi fans have read dune.

dune has movies tho
it has pop culture references

SO DOES 2001!

and most normal people havent watched iit

chuck they dressed up like shi'hulud

I SWEAR TO GOD YOUR ARE MAKING ME PHYSICALLY ANGRY

user132126
2:37 AM
Sam Jackson read 20,000 Leagues in Sphere.

"i can't let you do that, HAL"

user132126
It didn't end well.

google it
ima go throw up
brb

come back when you are sober and thinking straight

user132126
2001 is the hallmark of science fiction motion pictures.

user132126
2:38 AM
It's super dull, now (to me), but we owe decent scifi movies to it

2001 has always been dull
everything by kubrick has

user132126
I won't argue that.

plus, Dune the movie was crap.

user132126
But lots of old movies were.

2 movies

2:39 AM
even the guy who made Dune thought it was crap.

and a mini series

not that it isn't "good", but dude has shit pacing

user132126
They SciFi Channel Dune stuff was awesome.

user132126
I'll just say that Verne, Clarke, and Asimov are probably the most famous SciFi authors of all time, and then you have guys like Heinlein and Hubbard.

Douglas Adams.

user132126
2:41 AM
Yup.

i'd argue that most muggles dont dont adams by name

user132126
OSC is pretty famous, too, but some of that is because he's a jerk.

verne, wells, asimov, bradbury, clarke

user132126
Now, modern guys, Alistair Reynolds, Ben Bova, and Neal Stephenson are my jam.

and just to throw things on topic, stan lee
(but let's be honest, a lot of his dialogue was crap)

2:44 AM
im hanging myself
as the only person to read all the dune books

himarm is that kid that was like, "who the hell are prince and david bowie? i've never even heard of them. TAYLOR SWIFT AND BEYONCE"

ive heard of them
asimov has no pop culture referances
like
fo real/.

the three laws of robotics are referenced like any time ai comes up
and on the simpsons
and there is a will smith sort of based on his stuff
is will smith in a dune movie?

user132126
Which is funny, because everyone holds them as "Laws"

user132126
But Asimov meant to show they didn't work.

2:51 AM
eh. just one of those things that got away from the author

user132126
Uh... Even Big Hero 6 had a reference to the laws of robotics. "Robert Callaghan? As in Callaghan's Laws of Robotics?"

like how fahrenheit 451 is not about censorship

user132126
If there's a book about AI, Asimov is inevitably mentioned or referenced, however obliquely

user132126
References to Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics have appeared in a wide variety of circumstances. In some cases, other authors have explored the Laws in a serious fashion. Other references, like those made in the satirical newspaper The Onion, are clearly parodic. == Print media == The satirical newspaper The Onion published an article entitled "I, Rowboat" as a pun on Asimov's I, Robot, in which an anthropomorphic Rowboat gives a speech parodying much of the angst experienced by robots in Asimov's fiction, including a statement of the "Three Laws of Rowboatics": A Rowboat may not immerse...

user132126
There's a wiki page just for pop culture references of just one part of Asimov's SciFi contributions

2:55 AM
in less infuriating news... orphan black is awesome
i continue to be floored by maslany

i can't talk about awesome stuff right now.

user132126
lol, why?

my brain is still struggling to process the concept that himarm knows Dune but not 2001

user132126
lol

awesome stuff is just bouncing off the veil of fail

2:57 AM
seriously. i expect this from the sort of person who's never watched star wars
or my mother

user132126
IMO, people only need to know 3 things from 2001. The obelisks. The primary HAL references. The music leading up to "my god it's full of stars"

user132126
Movie-wise.

user132126
I've not read the book, to be honest.

A: When does Arrow S04E19 occur in relation to The Flash?

Sgt_GingerIn S04E01 of Arrow, saw the timeline of the end of the season, which is six months past the ending of S04E18 of Arrow, which also occurs concurrently with the recent episodes is S02 of Flash. Therefore, it could be safely assumed that the last episodes in each shows reflect roughly the same timel...

i'm not typically a coconut rum guy. but this shit will change your life.

mail me some i dont think they sell it in chicago

siesta key rum just won like 5 awards for best rum

ill buy a league sculpture from your wife for extra to include the rum
:P

drank like 5 fingers worth of captains private stock tonight, and am still sober enough to not think dune is the most famous old SF book

@CreationEdge you are aware that he doesn't ever say "my god, it's full of stars" in the movie, right?

3:10 AM
for double points

also, you forgot to mention that 2001 retroactively included Ric Flair's entrance music.

user132126
@KutuluMike It's in 2010 though, right?

no, IIRC it's a line from the novelization of the movie.

3:12 AM
confession: i dont think i've ever watched 2001 straight through
i'm fairly certain i've seen the whole movie, but always in pieces
mostly because i always fall asleep

holy shit
im so mad
that if from that movie

maybe, but watership down isn't on topic.

:DDD:DD:D:D:D:D:D:DD:

@Himarm it's actually a rather famous orchesta piece from Richard Strauss that is > 100 years old

thank god

3:15 AM
that song + ric flair combined are so awesome that their awesome was passed on to future generations.

user132126
I'm pretty sure it's in 2010, and I see a couple reports confirming that, but I don't have a copy.

user132126
I admit I fast-forwarded through 75% of 2010, after experiencing 2001

I'm pretty sure you could dress a broomstick up in wrestling boots and lean it against the ring and play ric flair's music and it would sell out an arena

user132126
@KutuluMike WTH did you just make me watch?

3:17 AM
nothing... you know where the [stop] button is.
men. they used to have a bunch of those dance mashups set to "Shut up and Dance" but they were all taken down.

user132126
@KutuluMike What?! Why?

@phantom42 just last month I learned that they tape pro wrestling every week in the Full Sail arena, for like the past 4 years.

not like crap backyard wrestling. WWE wrestling.
@CreationEdge copyright violation i assume. they pop back up again every so often.

@KutuluMike wait.. they have an arena now?
i was there at stuffmas and i dont remember an arena

3:20 AM

what time is it
only 1020
yall need to drink

its not like a huge arena

and agree with me on dune

looks pretty small in reality
for a while, they were holding graduations at the hard rock live

yeah, set up for NXT I doubt it holds more than 500

user132126
3:21 AM
That's one of my fave songs right now. My 3yo sings along, too

what song

user132126
Shut Up and Dance

"Shut up and Dance" ?

user132126
I also like Work This Body by them.

user116211
@phantom42 Not because he returned but the way he returned.

user116211
3:42 AM

(ihate him tho for real)O

user116211

im like 4 eps behind

user116211
@Himarm oh.

3:44 AM

the original web series or the tv show

4 hours later…
8:39 AM
@phantom42 Rumour has it that this is just the first bit of backlash from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice; Faraci seems to think that James Wan may leave Aquaman as well.

3 hours later…
11:15 AM
holy hell himarm that was the funniest thing you have ever said.

1 hour later…
12:24 PM
@DrRDizzle why? did they have something to do with DoJ?
@Himarm has she watched star wars?

1 hour later…
1:35 PM
hm. i remember barry saying he ran away to iron heights when he was 11, and i've seen a bunch of sources saying it was in s01e02, but it's not in the transcript.

1 hour later…
2:57 PM
from the Trickster episode:
That guy called himself The Trickster.
Whoa.
Someone was rocking the unitard.
James Jesse? Like Jesse James, only more twisted.
Where is this Mr.
Jesse now? He's serving several life sentences at Iron Heights.
that's the only mention of Iron Heights I see in the entire first season.
oh wait. nm.
these aren't in order.
stupid unix
I'm not your kid, Joe.
And you're not my father.
My father's sitting in Iron Heights.
S01E02

2 hours later…
4:46 PM
yawn
quite a night

5:29 PM
i have decided, vandal savage is a moron.
why would you wait until after they invented time travel to conquer the world?
also, why do none of the resistance forces in london have british accents?

5:55 PM
UGH
How the hell did Snart just sit there and let her rattle off the story of Per Degaton and not even try to correct her?

6:17 PM
ok.
i hate kendra, and f$ this show.

3 hours later…
9:37 PM
@phantom42 No, but WB simply don't know what direction they want to go in with various properties now. That leads to conflict

the directors might also start getting bolder about telling WB they don't know what they're doing.

10:14 PM
@KutuluMike yah, that's the only reference to iron heights i found there, but there are a bunch of people saying that there was a line about how barry ran away when he came to live with joe, and he made it all the way to iron heights before joe caught up and found him
@Himarm seriously. you must have been on quite a bender last night, trying to tell us that dune was the most famous old SF book around.
re: iron heights: the arrow wikia says that iron heights serves star city, central city and keystone city, and is in keystone city
but doesn't have any sources that i can track back reliably
we know that the quake from the undertaking damaged it, so it needs to be relatively close to star city

I remember that conversation, too.

and based on comments about pizza from keystone city recently, it's gotta be a fair distance away
because it's a big thing
i remember the conversation. i just can't find where it was
everyone swears it was in s1e2
but it's not, according to the transcripts

they mention keystone city a lot, actually.
in a way that makes it sound really close.
Eddie transferred from there.
Iris is writing an article about a battered women's shelter there.

running away and making it as far as iron heights makes it sound like it's not in central city or right outside it

well, he's a little kid.
running away and making it "as far as" the local bus stop could be considered a feat

10:24 PM
maybe. seems a stretch for an 11 year old kid

wally lived in keystone and he seemed to come and go a lot

i thought he was living in a dorm

I'm gonna guess this is a case of the flash/arrow writers have no concept of scale
when he first shows up he complains that "no one in keystone" will race him anymore.

he just decided that he didnt want to spend money on a dorm or apartment or something

OTOH
Keystone City has that pizza place that they only get to eat from when Barry trains.

10:26 PM
5 mins ago, by phantom42
and based on comments about pizza from keystone city recently, it's gotta be a fair distance away

These guys started in Keystone three years ago.
Began moving west, hitting banks along the way.
This morning, they hit Starling City Trust.
^-- the bank robbers run by the guy that Oliver's dad fired, from Flash S01

well, we know star city has to be roughly coastal
to get out to the pacific
unclear if central city is on the ocean or a big river

I'm pretty sure it's on the coast.
I think we saw barry run along a river out into the ocea
and there was that tsunami wave, no river would be big enough for that, i don't think
