To answer your question: No, a chopping board is not a better option. The rim all around is important so that if (or rather when) something spills, it’s contained and can’t reach the bed below.
It can be a serving tray, oversized platter, any decorative object with a comparable setup... As long as it’s solid enough that it won’t warp or wobble and has some kind of rim as explained above. The rest is up to you. If you find it aesthetically pleasing, even better. A bit of hedonism is nice.
