@DMGregory Hep, I stand corrected!

Mmm?

The edit of the edit :)
w.r.t. the wayback machine

1:37 AM
Ah, yeah. I find the wayback machine can be a bit slow sometimes, so I figured Unity's archive might be better for the time being.

Oh, well if Unity has it, yes, we should use Unity's version!
I'm not clear on the "minor" digit in unity's versioning system, though; e.g. is "2019.3" enough, or is the .5 really needed?

2:07 AM
Probably not. The second decimal is usually bugfixes and the like, not API changes.

Yes, that's the common practice. Not sure if Unity follows it, though. /shrug.

@Vaillancourt is it though? In my experience bugfixes are the third number. the second is new features. the first is incompatible changes

11:32 AM
@dot_Sp0T yes, that's what I thought too.

Some us the third or forth number as a buildnr tho

5 hours later…
4:08 PM
@dot_Sp0T yes, I suppose it's easier to use that for internal tracking.
Marketing uses the first three numbers, while the dev team uses the last one.

8:12 PM
@dot_Sp0T its harder
what can you possibly write that wasnt written already?

oh wow, it's that again.

what?

user92578
Any software field can have cool & innovative hobby projects that take off

user92578
Vue is a good example of something that "was already done"

user92578
Not technically a hobby project but also not something he was directly paid to do as I recall it was just a framework he built to make his job at Google easier

8:20 PM
why its a good example of something that was already done?

You don't need to invent new stuff to make something good and noteworthy. You don't need to create your own thing to be able to show projects you worked on (e.g. most open-source projects live from people contributing instead of reinventing; e.g. GLFW which is the basis for many game-frameworks). If you think that people ahve to do new stuff to make good stuff, why does call of duty still sell?
@0x00004 because it's the umpteenth javascript UI framework

user92578
@0x00004 Because Vue is heavily in use even though it's essentially competing Facebook

The notion of having to invent new stuff to prove your own worth is so wrong
society would not be where we are if everybody always only made new stuff instead of improving old stuff

@Tyyppi_77 because it s framework?

user92578
What?

8:32 PM
tool for developers not an application for users

user92578
What point are you trying to make? That game devs have it easier because their hobby projects can be user-facing applications?

In game development you have more room for building something new than in other fields i guess

user92578
Web devs making websites?

user92578
Mobile devs building apps?

yes kind of
Thats what i like about gamedev. Even beginners can build something new.

user92578
8:46 PM
Well personally I find coming up with new or novel mechanics really hard

user92578
But that might just as well translate to websites or apps or VSTs or Photoshop plugins or wherever

yeah i guess
@dot_Sp0T yes but it can be less motivating to write something that was already done unless you really into it

@0x00004 then better not think of the idea that everything has been done already. Imagine if writers go like: oh no I can't write a fantasy novel, Tolkien already did all of it

9:02 PM
now that you mentioned that i d say that eventually you ll have to create something new so in my opinion its better to start doing that early
