Hey room

user4704
2:43 AM
Hello.

@Josh How is your night going?

user4704
It's going.

user4704
Well enough I suppose.

user4704
Following this news of impending layoffs at ArenaNet.

user4704
That part, not so well.

2:50 AM
ohh.
Is it something that will likely impact you directly?

user4704
No, it's been years since I worked there, but I know a few folks there still.

ahh, sorry to hear about your friends. Hopefully they all manage to rebound well.

5 hours later…

7:46 AM
Yet a again a big layoff. I actually like ArenaNet due to guild wars 1, which I still play at times. I never really liked GW2

did some1 played FF XI?
this was a damn good game

1:44 PM
@Chris I stopped at VII

@AlexandreVaillancourt XI < XII ^^

Kay
I'm currently trying to figure out how I should configure my API to handle events, nested events, parralel events enqueue them properly visually without crying myself to sleep
At this very moment I am struggling both at the "figuring out" part as well as the "without crying myself to sleep part"

2:05 PM
@Chris I don't see what you're talking about :p (I mistyped, apparently!)

@AlexandreVaillancourt oh damn, for some strange reason i though you wrote "XII" instead of "VII", i may need new glasses lol

@Kay what kind of events?
@Chris I did, but I have superpowers that allow me to edit stuff outside of the usual 2 minutes; sorry if it mislead you :/

Kay
@AlexandreVaillancourt as in Events I trigger myself. Like if I would have a DashAttack spell. Events could be ExitTile, EnterTile, PreviewAttack, Attacked, Damaged

@AlexandreVaillancourt hahaha really, wow dont mess with my brain, cheater!

Kay
@AlexandreVaillancourt if that answers your question :p

2:12 PM
@Kay ah, that's a nice challenge, are you considering queing them all at once with delays, or firing the first with a series of the subsequent ones and have them queued one at a time?
@Chris yeah, I'll try to avoid that in the future :)

i have a really good idea for a game, but no skill and time to develop it :/. any idea how i still can accomplish the game being developed beside paying lots of money?

Kay
Basically once I trigger a command such as activating that DashAttack. I want the state to update immediatly whilst the animation will try to catch up. This way the player can keep on playing while the animations are still runing and doesnt have to wait for the animations to be processed
this would probably mean i'll have to process the state right away which means I would have to enqueue all events at once
this becomes especially hard if I'd make a spell which changes the state of multiple objects at a time. Like a gust ability which pushes surrounding objects away and dealing damage to them. Like what if another unit has an effect which triggers on moving or being damaged
At this point challenge is an understatement I think

2:37 PM
@Chris Get the skills and the time ;P Other than that, there are unethical ways, so I will not suggest any.

no unethical is not my thing as well. thanks tho

Once you get the skills, things generally take less time. But as one grow older, one also get less time, so it's all the same (at least it was that in my case ;P)
@Kay Could you pass with the first event the series of following event to trigger once the first is completed?

Kay
I mean I could but what would that do

Blocking? What if an event triggers another event that cancels the series of event? If you have all your events in your queue, you have to look into it and remove them because they're no longer valid. If you hold on to them until it's time to queue them, you could just not queue them in the first place. (?)

Kay
You mean if an initiator of an event dies within the eventchain ?

2:54 PM
For instance, or if event initiator A starts the sequence of events targeting enemy B, and at some point B realizes they're about to be attacked and raises shield, that would make it so that the event chain about "damage" is no longer valid.. But I don't know if it applies to your situation.

Kay
Yeah at this point I'm not sure. I am like overloaded with the overhead of that problem :D
But yes I've kept that in mind that I can intercept events which would change the outcome

Taking a break sometimes help :P

Kay
Don't need a break if my will is already broken.

or working on other things for some days, this helps me often. when i then force the "old" problem i sometimes have completely different ideas

Kay
Jokes aside I'm just trying to dive into it and try to figuring it out by just coding and thigns might resolves themselves

3:04 PM
Hehe

2 hours later…
5:26 PM
@Kay that's why you need a break in the first place :P

1 hour later…
6:41 PM
Spent the 3 last days documenting the code I wrote.
Feels like a race.

:O

Because, really, what programmer enjoys writing doc :P
I enjoy having nice doc, but writing it is a chore :P

Kay
@GabrieleVierti taking a break is to recover from being broken. Noted :p

@Kay It can also act as a way to prevent such a thing from happening :P
I heard, years ago, that some people had their doctor prescribe them anti-depressant as means of preventing a burnout, because they were working so hard.
That's... something else.

Kay
I think I should get these as well. Totally the right move
