SVN serves the same purpose, the main difference being that git is distributed where SVN is centralized. With SVN, you have one server, it's the master, you sync from it, you commit to it, when you search for history, it searches from that server.
You can/should do that with git, at some point, but git allows you to create branches locally, commit to these branches, revert, sync, merge, whatever you want locally, without affecting anyone.
If you create a branch, you create the branch on the server, it's available there, and anyone can tamper with it (unless you have a friendly admin or workplace policies).
You don't "clone", you "checkout", but yes, when you commit, it's sent to the central server.
Oh, well it comes along using the tool. And if you work with others that have a hard time using the tool. git is a powerful tool, and like any other tools, it can go bad if you make a mistake.
