8:21 AM
@Bálint [hefty groan] [adds a star]
@Curio conga rats!

Loaded up LibGDX last night
Man that stuff is complicated
Slick is the easiest thing ever compared to that

8:53 AM
The idea of an event-driven game engine is kinda weird to me.

Doesn't seem event driven to me
Just confusing with all the different modules and rendering styles it has

1 hour later…
user92578
10:01 AM
I found it really approachable

eeeewww java...
j/k :P

@ShaunWild oh, huh. somehow when reading about it a week or two ago i got the impression it was event driven somehow, but now i don't see anything indicating that.
@AlexandreVaillancourt i don't much like java either (syntax isn't nice, and now we have a company in charge of it that is litigating in ways they shouldn't) so that'd be a deal-breaker for me

@doppelgreener What I don't like about it is the editors used to develop in Java:they feel slow and sticky... at least that was my experience with it. Maybe there are new tools that are on par with VS nowadays :)

Don't trigger me

@AlexandreVaillancourt i agree. didn't ever enjoy using netbeans or eclipse the way i enjoy using literally any other editor.
but that was in 2010

10:08 AM
Yep :P
Me too ;)
Good old days at university!
Or was I still in university? I don't remember.. probably not; at least not doing Java at that time..

2010 was second year of university for me :D

it was probably my 6th :P
(my second B. Sc.)

@AlexandreVaillancourt university was a really hard time for me. i'm glad i only did 3 years. 😞

@doppelgreener Yeah :) I had no issue with it, so any regrets here. Different experiences for every one I guess!

@AlexandreVaillancourt definitely. at the time i was dealing with undiagnosed clinical depression that was making it extremely difficult to do my coursework, so my GPA and marks each year went downwards pretty much linearly from 6.5 (out of 7 being perfect) -> 5.5 -> 4.5.
4 is the minimum passing grade, and if i'd done a forth i wouldn't be surprised if that trend actually continued downward to 3.5, i.e. failing

10:23 AM
aww that sucks man ;(
Hope things are better for you nowadays?

it does!! i had some really enjoyable times but that made some of my assignments really awful.

@doppelgreener Yeah, nasty stuff :/ I know someone who dropped out of college because of that too.

How old are you? if you don't mind my asking?

@ShaunWild i am 27 as of last month
@ShaunWild yeah, things are great now. i got that diagnosed at the beginning of this year (so for those keeping count at home, "undiagnosed" lasted a long time) and have medication and have done a really helpful therapy course.
plus my managers & HR at work are informed and very supportive.

@doppelgreener Damn, that's a really long time you must have felt really bad :/

10:27 AM
Is there generally an underlying cause for depression? Or is it just a general thing?

user92578
@AlexandreVaillancourt Yeah this is a great point

@AlexandreVaillancourt i was doing really well as far as depression symptoms go, but there were a number of things in my life i was keenly aware were simply not working well at all, and yet they were working for everyone else, and i was having difficulty with those things & others that i could tell others were not experiencing, and i was not sure why things were different for me. i had been searching for years in finding ways to resolve those things & get them working for me properly.

@AlexandreVaillancourt I used VS and it was the most horrible clunky piece of crap I'd ever used, Netbenas is so fluid and beautiful

user92578
@ShaunWild What a great counterargument

turns out aaaaalll of it was depression symptoms, so frankly being diagnosed was an enormous relief: suddenly i had concrete treatment and ways to resolve what i'd been dealing with. i'd liken it to a marathon runner who was trying their best, not keeping up, and never knew why until a doctor came along and pointed out their foot was broken and that there's treatment for that.
@ShaunWild fair enough, each to their own. :) which version did you use though? was it a recent one from the past couple of years?

10:31 AM
2016

ok, 2016 was a pretty good version. older versions like VS 2008 and 2010 were pretty bad.

I was joking anyway, from my experience they're both the exact same.

well, 2010 was great, but only in comparison to 2008.

user92578
There was a 2016 version?

Like seriously, they're both text editors that auto complete stuff, they both felt the exact same to me

10:33 AM
@ShaunWild depression is different for every individual, but in general it comes down to a vicious self-perpetuating cycle between negative and disruptive thoughts, feelings, physical symptoms, and behaviours, which leads to isolation, low energy, and low mood.
for example: a person feels sad and lonely and like they're no good, so they withdraw from social activities because they don't feel well enough to go out, so they keep feeling lonely, and they stay up because they can't sleep, and then get up late, and miss opportunities to socialise and feel bad for getting up late and don't have much energy because they probably slept badly, so they don't feel well, and are definitely not going out to socialise today either and will feel sad about that.
that's not a cycle i went through exactly, but it's not too uncommon. depression would be made up of dozens of such cycles perpetuating themselves and each other.

I always feel lethargy when it comes to social occasions but I don't think I have depression
Say, I have weekend plans to meet someone, when I wake up on saturday morning, I'm just like, na I'll cancel and just play video games isntead
But I know that if I actually went out I'd be fine

@ShaunWild There is such a thing called "social anxiety", can lead to depression :)

There is! There is also just really preferring video games & not wanting to socialise too much, which can be entirely fine and healthy, except when it isn't.

"Based on your responses today it's unlikely you're suffering from depression."

10:46 AM
@doppelgreener ....so.. I could ditch all my responsibilities and go play?? :P

@AlexandreVaillancourt yes.
@ShaunWild \o/ yay!

Haha :P I won't, bad plan for the future :P

well. yes. probably. but you could. :D

Yeah, I could!

My entire life is working, gym, food atm
I don't get motivation to do anything else

10:50 AM
Ok, Blind Guardian won't work while trying to focus on work..

Apart hitting canal street on the weekends ;)

@AlexandreVaillancourt i cannot easily listen to music with words if i am also trying to do anything involving words. like programming or writing.

@ShaunWild I know someone who realized they had to start a family when they were waiting in line for a bar, freezing at -5°C, so yeah, need for change will come, someday :P
@doppelgreener Yeah; now I'm doing reverse engineering, so it's not just programming now (music with lyrics is ok when I program); I switched to goa/psy-trance...

Hi!

@Curio Morning!

10:55 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt try Silent Shout by The Knife :)

Afternoon by now here

@Curio Hello!

@doppelgreener It's on!
@Curio Oh. Well good afternoon!

@doppelgreener conga rats? Mice which are from Congo?

@Curio yes!

10:57 AM
seriously? XD

they are also doing the conga in a line
so you could say conga rats are in order

Fine!

movies.stackexchange.com has embedded youtube videos!!

Why is it not standard?
Couldn't we have it too?

11:13 AM
movies&tv probably has it as a special feature because of the nature of their subject.
frankly it's probably a good thing we don't have free youtube embeds

user92578
I can't see why that would hurt

11:36 AM
@doppelgreener oh, I read what you wrote an hour ago, I'm sorry about you :(
Here is Bàlint

@Curio i appreciate it. things are pretty good now. :)

Fine :)

@doppelgreener We get some "here is the effect I'd like to achieve: youtube video", or "here is the bug that I have: youtube video"; this could be useful.

12:32 PM
Okay, screw Tank Engineer, I'm making an AI game
I want to make the best 2D evolution simulator to date

Rock simulator is the best
You can't beat it

Except with paper (simulator)

@Curio I started using LibGDX yesterday

I read it :D

12:35 PM
Decided to learn it isntead of Slick
Because multi platform

yep
Is it satisfying you?

user92578
abandoning projects is no good way to complete anything

@Tyyppi_77 Quiet you ;)

12:56 PM
@Curio amazing
this one's nice

o_0
1 million...

safe to say there is a bit more to it than the title lets on :D

@doppelgreener That's chill and usable when working!

@AlexandreVaillancourt it is!!!

I wouldn't listen to it while driving, though :P

1:03 PM
fair decision

How is the "game"?

@AlexandreVaillancourt If you like that album, you'll probably enjoy the album Fever Ray, by the artist of the same name. She is one of the two artists in The Knife -- specifically The Knife is a brother/sister pair.
@Curio i enjoyed it. :D

I don't know the album :/

oh, that was directed at Alex. I recommended to him Silent Shout by The Knife earlier.

Oh, I didn't see the @
What can you do in that game?

1:07 PM
@Curio get it & see

I'm scared XD

i cannot meaningfully describe it without undermining the game

@doppelgreener I've queued that album right after The Knife's one :P That's google play music ;)

woo!!

1:24 PM
10 votes and i'm 10k on SO

1:35 PM
@Almo Nice!
3 2 to go :P

@Almo go forth and conquer, my child

@Almo gz man :)

haha holy shit thanks guys
:)

🤘🤘

user92578
I have this weird habbit of forgotting to put my headphones back on properly after I've talked to someone and adjusting them so that only one ear gets audio

user92578
1:49 PM
I only notice it once there's something missing from guitar harmonies

I always completley forget to press play
And just sit with them on in silence

ok so the 10k tools are how shit gets closed or deleted so fast
you get lists of most voted most downvoted most commented etc, which point out places where outliers are located

What's funny

I had always wondered how there was always a mod on the scene wherever there were huge comment strings

2:05 PM
@Almo diamond moderators have a separate flagging interface, and the system automatically raises flags in various circumstances. one of those circumstances is lots of comments in a small span of time.
but, yeah, we also use those 10k tools for some of our investigation.
you should also be able to see review queue history now, i think?

yeah

I'm back

@UriPopov Hello!

@doppelgreener woooaa! Haven't seen it before just now!

hi hi

2:08 PM
@UriPopov wb!

Top active user games..?

@AlexandreVaillancourt superpowers!

@AMahaRaja ?

banner for a upcoming games convention

looks cool

2:12 PM
@Almo android game..

its hella cool :D

@AMahaRaja I don't know what you mean by "top active user games"

@AMahaRaja I gotta be honest with you, you're not writing coherent meaningful sentences

@Almo number of active user higher then other game

oh I don't know what the android game is with the highest number of active users.
but I would bet on Clash Royale being near the top

2:17 PM
@doppelgreener now a day most of user liked game..?
@Almo yeah okay

Q: What is the purpose of confirming old password to create a new password?

ronaldtgi Suppose that someone stole my password, he/she can easily change it by confirming the old password. So, I am curious that why do we need that step and what is the purpose of using old password confirmation?

wow this actually has some interesting answers I hadn't thought of
like "make sure keyboard is working the way the user thinks it is"

oh yeah :D
like making sure it's not in dvorak

Why do you have to change the password if you have this one? mostsecure.pw

lol

2:52 PM
@Almo hmm. ever since playing kings of chaos and astro empires, i've kinda had a desire to make a somewhat-competitive semi-pvp game that doesn't have horrific exploits where people can just destroy all your crap.

hehehe :)

browser-based, etc

the main exploit is that matchmaking systems can be fooled by deliberate losses
the trick is to make sure that the rewards scale with rank so there's no incentive to sandbag
clash of clans suffered from this problem so badly I quit playing
they fixed it in clash royale

in astro empires, the combat system was 100% solved to the point absolutely any attack could be made profitable -- enter the enemy composition into a spreadsheet and it will tell you the optimal attack composition. there was absolutely one exception, which was to guard your planet with 1 dreadnought and 1 planetary ring -- and keep all the rest of your fleet on the move because they were invincible in transit.
that's not ok

that's definitely not ok

2:55 PM
in kings of chaos, people would have sabotage smurfs. you'd have, say, this 100k strength / 100k defence dwarven army high up in the rankings, and then threaten in your description that anyone who dares attack them will get sabotaged. then they have this 10,000,000 sabotage rating smurf down low in the rankings, capable of absolutely exceeding the sentry defenses of anyone who'd raid their dwarven army, so they get reprisal by sabotaging absolutely every single thing their attacker owns.
next time the attacker attacks or defends, every single item they have vanishes
they're left with an army and techs and nothing else
this sabotage retaliation was common, unpredictable, and unstoppable.

:(

it became pretty common for me to see people saying "you attack or spy = i sab you for everything" in their description. either i ignore that and get sabbed, or i let a threat in the description be the ultimate defense (basically defense rating: infinity) and not attack at all.

:(

both games are broken formulas

yeah very

2:59 PM
there's this thing i read recently in a Magic: the Gathering design philosophy article. They have a Standard rotation, where you play with cards from approximately the last 1.5-2 years, and new cards get introduced approximately every 3 months which significantly change the metagame.

yeah

They said all formats get solved eventually, but their hope for standard was that it would take long enough to solve that nobody would solve it before standard changed again.

MTG is very smart

it is!!

I saw RG talk about it when he visted ubisoft to help us with a game design i was working on
he approved my player-motivation system, said it should motivate the kind of behavior we wanted
then they changed it
idiots

3:01 PM
aweso---nooooooooo!!
(who's RG?)

richard garfield

whoa
cool!

yeah
he's a really good guy
had him sign one of my magic cards
in true spirit of how he designed it, I had him sign a common from Fallen Empires
Combat Medic
come to think of it... I'm not sure where that card is :(

haha, I just saw he has a magic card of himself: Richard Garfield, Ph.D.

he said the common/rare system was designed for this: all cards have same power level. more powerufl cards cost more, so they're all roughly even.
what does an invested player do with his excess commons? GIVES THEM TO SOMEONE ELSE. That person can build a playable deck since commons are not "Bad" cards.
that was designed to spread the game around
god damn that guy is smart

3:11 PM
@Almo nowadays that's not so much the case -- rares and mythic rares are frequently flat-out more powerful -- but there is still intelligent decision-making about rarity levels.

yeah

the current head developer, mark rosewater, is also damn smart about the game's development, and talks about e.g. how they're actually developing lots of games at once, not just the one: a knife-edge competitive winner-takes-all game, an enjoyable relaxing game between friends, a dueling game, a multiplayer game, a game about exploring cool flavour, a game of collection, a game of puzzling through deck assembly, etc

yeah
it's an impossible-to-manage-perfectly gmae like LoL or DotA

yuss
it helps that it's sorta OK if some cards just suck and some cards just rule

3:32 PM
Isn't LoL boring?

that's subjective, but there's enough people who find it exciting that there's a thriving professional scene

D:

LoL as in the MOBA?

yes

it's not boring
My favourite game

3:41 PM
doppelgreene is right

3:52 PM
doppel is always right

doppel is always greene too

@Curio LoL is not remotely boring
I've been at it for over 4 years
still tons to learn and do

doppel is right pt 2

doppel is rainbow

4:01 PM
Curio is curious
Is there a way to disable the touch with the second finger?

@Curio Send special gloves to your users.

Ok, thanks!
found another solution, but not good like Alexandre's solution

@AlexandreVaillancourt genius

Days shorten :(

4:11 PM
@Curio :(

nooo the dark nooooo

at least it's not .......
... pitch black.

Down to less than 150 questions with the tag! A long way from the original 900+!!

5:19 PM
@Tyyppi_77 Do I have to have particular musical dowries to create music with that program?

user92578
Well it doesn't automatically create chord progressions or melodies for you

user92578
So yes, you need to be able to compose

I know the music lexicon, is it enough?

user92578
Not sure what you mean by that?

For example, I know the notes, the times and so on

user92578
5:24 PM
Reaper also has its own learning curve but it's not terribly difficult. You'll need to find some instruments from the internet for it too, it doesn't come with anything really.

user92578
Well I mean I guess you could start putting notes after another.

user92578
I'm still not sure what you were actually asking.

I'm asking if it requires particular music abilities

user92578
Particular as in what? Do you have to know how to play the oboe to make music on a computer? No. Do you even need to know music theory? No, if you're into trial-and-error work.

not knowing music theory will limit how much you can do, but you can get stuff that sounds good in a certain way without it

5:30 PM
Ok thanks
I'll try it

the program will literally not start up if you do not feed your bachelor of music composition into it

@Curio here's an example of what you can do if you know some music theory

and then it shuts off and deletes all your work if you don't submit to it a marked and well-received music theory PhD thesis after 4 years

:D
and here's what I wrote not knowing much of music theory. I know some, but not a lot.

:D

2 hours later…
7:09 PM
Why do people use var so much in C#?
I even seen some using it like var myObject = new MyObject();

I need an English opinion

@Bálint lazy is my opinion

Is "Run more road possible" correct?

not really
I have no idea what that's supposed to mean

I imagined

7:11 PM
I'm not saying you're a dork or anything; I know how hard English is to learn :)

Don't worry man :)

There' a verb for that though

You have ro run and jump some obstacles. If you touch these ones you lose
So I'm finding a way to say the goal

The goal is to run farther without touching these obstacles

Yes
I need a sentence which reassume it

7:14 PM
That's a sentence, that tells you everything
Oh, finally got it, you cover the road

Cover more road possible...?

Not that it's useful for you or anything, but I couldn't remember it

I'll probably write: Run farther without touching enemies

Simply write "the goal is to cover the longest distance without touching the [obstacles]"
Replace [obstacles] with the obstacle's name

Because it has to be an imperative sentence
Cover the longest distance without touching tubes and goombas
Fine

7:19 PM
@Bálint I var when it's obvious what the type is

Yeah, that works

var position = new Vector3();

@doppelgreener First of all

I also var when I don't care, and don't want to have to care, what the type is. For example: var position = Tower.Position; dragon.MoveTo(position). I don't care which kind of object I'm using for my positions, and this way when I change the object type for my positions I don't have to change those two lines as well.
@Bálint hahaha

Ok, you are right in that case, using var there is completely fine
However, I still can't understand why some people write var something = somethingElse / 2;
What' the type of something? Imt? Float? Double? Something else that overrid the / operator
And yes, I've seen that in production code

7:28 PM
English opinion:
Use it (fireball) to shoot the goombas. You can earn munitions jumping on goombas. You can keep only one at time.
You can't shoot two consecutive times:there is some time between two shots.
Is it right?
Or simply: Note: there is some time between two shots.

@Bálint i completely believe you and would never want to use var there, because i'd want to document what kind of result i'm trying to keep.

user92578
Yeah var when obvious or when it really doesn't matter

@Curio "Use your fireball to shoot the goombas. You can earn munitions by jumping on goombas. You can only keep one munition at a time."
or if you mean munitions = fireballs, then i'd just say "earn fireballs" and "you can only hold one fireball at a time"

user92578
"Please note that your firerate is limited."

Space after a colon ("times: there is...")

7:37 PM
And the second part?

user92578
I want to mention though, that I don't think walls of text like these serve as a good tutorial.

Ok

sony dev net have asshole password requirements
so I will write it down, defeating the purpose

@Tyyppi_77 "Move your finger upward to jump. More you move it upward, more you jump"
You can stop the game exiting from the game with the home button for example. You can resume it touching the screen.
Any corrections?

7:58 PM
give me a sec
"move your finger upward to jump. Move your finger further to jump higher."
the other sentence is confusing
if you're telling people they can exit the game with the phone's home button, they already know that
