1:12 AM
anyone here used PaaS - heroku / open shift / google whatever? any regrets? thinking about building something wondering if I should just manage my own servers? or outsource it to the cloud

user4704
mk, let's see what newfound havoc I can wreak with my newfound repository-owner status of MacVim.

Joe
"pull request denied, not using proper style guide"

user4704
heh

user4704
There's only one PR open, which I already commented needed to be behind an option since it changes fundamental behavior.

user4704
I can delete my local fork though. :D

Jon
9:49 AM
Wake up

._.
Kinda tired

Jon
gf is driving to get me a coffee right now

lucky!

Noo don't wake up
Go to bed
Bed is better

Jon
it isbetter, but it is not an option
working class don't sleep, we are modern day slaves
What I should do, is find a celebrity and tape myself having sex with them
Insta-no more work for life right there

9:58 AM
Advantages of college: sometimes your weekend randomly starts on Thursday :D

Jon
Advantages of work -- no more summers off for the next 40 years
2

Disadvantages of college: it costs money (€2000 each year) instead of making you money

Jon
I read on Reddit the other day, this girl just got out of college with 90K in debt
HOW.
That is 22500 per year

Well if you're from outside the EU it costs €10000-15000 per year here, so if you have a super decadent lifestyle you can get there.

Jon
Yeah, but if I had such a crippling debt (this debt is not interest free) -- coming right out of school
Holy shit..

10:03 AM
Yep, it sucks.

Jon
My student loan debt was at like 15K when I got out - and that was crippling enough for someone without any money or foothold on life
I can't imagine it being 90K that is almost a mortgage
something needs to be done about this
At least... the VERY LEAST, eliminate or greatly reduce the interest made off these loans -- I lookd at the numbers and it is sickening how much money is made off student debt

I'll also finish college with some amount of debt, but at least it's nearly interest-free and I only have to repay 3% of my income above the minimum income each month.
Also the government gives me €373 each month so I can't complain. :P

Jon
Yeah, here we use the youth as a way to fund the old

I was fortunate, the only "debt" I got was because I didn't cancel "study finances" (money from the government for studying) on time, so I payed that with the received money

Jon
I got a couple scholarships
well, whatever they are called... freemoney
like 2000$ or so

10:06 AM
Probably scholarships
Those aren't really a thing in holland as far as I know

Jon
Here, you just have to apply for a bunchof them... your chances of getting some are pretty high

If your parents' income is low enough you receive some money, so everyone kind of has a scholarship anyway. :P

Jon
It just sucks to apply for -- most of them want 500 word essays or whatnot
Takes up a lot of time to apply -- but you cash out so its really worth it

€2000 for a 500-word essay seems like a pretty good deal.

Jon
naw, its more around 500-1000 each
I remember this rich kid in high school ended up winning a fully paid scholarship to the university of his chioce
What a joke that was -- like he already had a free ride

10:10 AM
@Lokkij more like an essay for a chance at that money

Jon
Yeah, a chance :) the game was to apply to as many as you qualified for

The money I receive to pay insurance with is also a bit more than my insurance actually costs, so that's another free €15 per month. :P

Jon
you are totally cheating the system man

1 hour later…
Jon
11:40 AM
wtf... iphone6S uses two differen processors?
Apparently its a crapshoot, if you get the bad one, you get 20% less battery life
Samsung and TMSC manufacturers

lol

Jon
game looks stunning

does

Jon
storm troopers are apparnetly wayyyyy too realistic

CppCon is releasing their videos! This one seems interesting (haven't watched it yet) youtube.com/watch?v=NTWSeQtHZ9M&ab_channel=CppCon

Jon
11:53 AM
lmao
I'm still not sold on entity frameworks for games

I've found them quite useful, it's allowed me to prototype way faster in my gamejams
It also has the advantage of being very easy to load entities from a file

user92578
Hi guys!

Hello

Jon
sup typster

user92578
no homework

11:59 AM
:O

user92578
and we have some career lectures in this course

user92578
so today in the morning a game dev artist from Frozenbyte (Trines) came to talk about his job

user92578
it was really awesome

user92578
the guy was super nice and explained good stuff

Jon
12:00 PM
should of taped it
put it on youtube so we could of benefit from it as well -- damnit typ

user92578
Oh, and @MickLH I thought I'd just let you know that we're done.

Jon
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

@Tyyppi_77 very cool

user92578
yeah

user92578
really basic stuff, I'm guessing I was the only one who really understood what he was talking about

Jon
12:01 PM
What is the most important thing you got out of it?

user92578
"rigging" and stuff

user92578
hmm

user92578
that's a good question

user92578
I guess what I really learnt that in the game dev industry, your education is not the whole deal. You really need to be into it and work on stuff on your own, so that you can present your work when applying.

user92578
I'm not sure if I actually want to be a game dev.

user92578
12:02 PM
But programming sure is something I'd like to do for a living

user92578
The guy went trough different positions in the business

user92578
He mostly focused on the stuff he did, rigging and animation

user92578
But he explained how programmers often have different focus areas in the team

user92578
Oh man, I'm still so hyped about it

yeah it's not just like "can you operate a spreadsheet?"
you need to be able to be creative, whether it's coding game logic, or modelling/rigging/art/texturing, or music

user92578
12:06 PM
I can't believe I thought about going to listen to an engineer

Games are fun

user92578
Yup

user92578
All tough I gotta say that he did not have a clue of how to use the Powerpoint-like tool in libreoffice

user92578
Which is kinda funny for a guy who can probably operate perfectly in Maya or something :D

user92578
But hey, what's up with you guys?

user92578
12:10 PM
@Jon oh and this. there were like 15 of us listening in a small class room, so whipping out my phone/magically getting myself a good camera and a stand would have been really weird

Jon
Not with this on

user92578
LOL

did networking today, spruced up a pause menu, and now seeing about rigging eyeballs

user92578
that's a lot!

user92578
sounds cool

user92578
that's awesome!

user92578
would take like 6 months for me to get working :D

Unity is great when it works

Hey all.

user92578
Hi

user92578
12:18 PM
Look who shows up when hats are posted!

Damn straight.

user92578
Have you guys used pomodoro in game dev?

Not exactly

@Chris how do I tell lady tallowmere about the update, despite all advice?

@Jon press (at least gaming-press) these days don't ware fedoras. They wear glasses, beards and blue hair.

Jon
12:21 PM
wow Chris, that is impressive

I've used a program called instant boss to have 10 minutes work, 2 minutes break

@MickLH she's not much of a listener
I've tried Pomodoro stuff
but it was a waste of time

user92578
really?

Just code

I noticed @Chris, you should probably give her an ALICE clone with an extensive library of cybersex techniques

12:22 PM
take a break when you really need to, not when some timer says you need to stop

^

user92578
aight, sounds good

@MickLH sounds like the perfect occasion to create some fanfic or fanart ;p

@Chris I mostly use it at work, not to take breaks when needed, but to keep the break time short

ah yeah

12:25 PM
I don't use it during making games because I have something else to keep break times short: I want to do this
Work, not so much

@Chris Really that's how it goes? You're just gonna sit there being god... capable of giving this woman a golden heart and good sense of freakdom... and you're just like "lol just fantasize about it bro, I don't feel like it"

lol

Jon
The response came very quickly from both companies, who denied the rumors. While Microsoft’s response was "Microsoft declines to comment as they do not comment on rumors or speculation," Canonical's CEO Jane Silber responded with "Your sources are wrong; there are no such discussions."
LOL, why tf would microsoft buy Ubuntu? They could just start their own distro

lol they could just run Windows on top of Xenix and call it a distro
If people can get away with referring to BSD based desktops as simply "distro"s, I get to pull the same card on Xenix

user92578
Oh one day I gotta clean my level class... again

user92578
12:32 PM
Way too much stuff exposed

Jon
since i have been coding in unity, i got super lazy with that

@Tyyppi_77 Write how you want it all to work down somewhere as you think of it, but keep working on your existing code.
Eventually, you'll converge somewhere in the middle, with some usable code and some plans on how to design some parts better
That way, you wont have to refactor things back and forth extra times

Jon
@Chris how do you deal with sounds in unity?

AudioSources on each actor... occasionally I'll use AudioSource.PlayOneShot at a position for like an explosion

Just opened 8 boosters in Duelyst, and every pack had at least 2 rares (out of five cards) or better :D

user92578
12:35 PM
Nice!

@Lokkij buy me a lotto ticket

@Jon and I think with Unity 5 you can use the audio mixer to put music and sound effects on their own tracks and adjust volume with that

user92578
Oh right, I need a cool sound system too... I gotta see if SDL_Mixer will do... or if I'll just go hardcore with OpenAL

Jon
hmmm
didn't know about audio mixer

@Tyyppi_77 OpenAL makes positional audio way easier

I ended up creating my own VolumeManager class and passed every AudioSource I wanted to play through that to adjust volume

SDL_Mixer is actually a more manual-laborey way to go

Jon
This mixer is feature packed, holy shit

user92578
Man that looks awesome

user92578
@Chris Also this sounds like a good idea

12:38 PM
@Tyyppi_77 oh, and OpenAL gives you acceleration from the sound card for most things
(while SDL_Mixer, is basically married to doing everything manually on the CPU at the final stage)
Either way you go, it's a trivial amount of code.

Jon
i'm running the techno demo
it is a bit intense

@Jon I'd probably change it to a link instead of inlining, to prevent accidentally inducing epilepsy or something.

You know, ever since this hospital thing, we've been pretty lenient about genetic defects... but being sent into convulsions by highly available sensory input seems a bit extreme? Will we eventually have people that are born allergic to gaseous Nitrogen and require an Oxygen tank at all times to survive?

user92578
Awesome:

12:49 PM
@MickLH Epilepsy doesn't have to do with genetics, necessarily. My brother had problems with it due to a part of his brain being damaged. In the end, they took that part out, and he's better now.

Jon
yeah I can't change it now
All we can do is type stuff to get it to flow upwards

I take that as supporting evidence, @MartinSojka

Flagged for mod attention then.

Jon
heh hopefully no one died

@MickLH You take mechanical damage to the brain causing epilepsy as supporting evidence that it's a genetic defect? Interesting.

12:50 PM
Not at all, lol
That's actually so ridiculous that it gave me a true smile
I'll clarify: I consider that example to show that it's a "repairable glitch" which should be dealt with immediately

user92578
This is a screenshot from my current test level where I test the level editor:

user92578

It's "repairable" in the sense that his offspring won't have the same problems.

user92578
I just realized that accidentally I have made the perfect spot for teaching the player about passable thin bridges

user92578
He can't just walk straight

user92578
12:54 PM
So, "there's gotta be another way"

Jon
burn it

user92578
y?

Jon
burn the bridge to get down

user92578
oh

user92578
or, you could just instead of adding fire to the game, just hit the down arrow

Jon
12:55 PM
down sets bridge on fire, perfect

user92578
lol

Du you have a background tower model you can add to the game? Because that spinning wheel of death needs something to rest on, visually.

user92578
ah, yeah, I just realized that

user92578
A background tower might work

user92578
Currently I just did this:

12:56 PM
Looks like Broforce

user92578

user92578
damn right it does

user92578
but I'm working on de-broforceing it

looks really good tho

I'm looking forward to someone using the game to recreate Lemmings gameplay.

12:57 PM
@MartinSojka My calculations suggest you might possibly have some kind of emotional investment in the previous topic, I would like to offer sensitivity and assure you that my views represent those of the "Devil's Advocate"

user92578
@nathan thanks!

is the gameplay similar?

user92578
yeah, kinda

user92578
My terrain isn't destructive

Jon
yet.

user92578
12:58 PM
and the "goal" is to free prisoners for cages, kinda like in rayman

user92578
right, "yet".

@MickLH I have in general an investment in the topic, because I have a running wager with my brothers who of us kicks the bucket first - me with my heart problems, one brother due to epilepsy, or another brother due to diabetes.

user92578
but yeah, shoot and blow, jump and kill is the main gameplay stuff

@MartinSojka Well with that in mind, I'll aim to optimize your heart rate in our correspondence. Optimize in favor of your health, of course.

What technologies do you use for the development?

1:06 PM
the good (ol') ones

Unity3D? :')

AFAIK, raw C++ and SDL2

Jon
RAW
WE LIKE IT RAW~!

GET SOME!!

raw cpp sucks

1:08 PM
How do I say this...

how many persons are working on the project?

You know how they say: "Don't kill me I'm just the messenger!" ?

lel

@nathan I like libgdx, but then I'm just making small one-person mini-games for my own enjoyment. :)

come at me brah

user92578
1:09 PM
@nathan I'm using SDL2, so C++

user92578
So basically my own engine

user92578
@nathan And just me

They say that because the messenger gets killed. Nathan. The messenger gets killed for delivering the painful truth.

@MartinSojka i used to use libGDX, it's an awesome framework
the only issue for me with libGDX is Java, i like C# much more
so i'm using mono atm

Do you know how painful, exactly, @nathan? I think you do.

user92578
1:11 PM
monogame is a good choice I believe

@MickLH what the hell are you talking about?
monogame is good, lower level than libGDX, but still good

user92578
checks transcript no clue

i don't feel like mono/xna brings a lot more features than SFML for instance

monolame!
(just kidding... never used it)

@nathan Just about pets and random life stuff, over a cup of coffee with your mother in law at the local park on the bench in the early morning

1:13 PM
it's rather low level compared to what others people usually use with C# or Java

user92578
@nathan oh, could you elaborate on this?

user92578
i'd be interested in hearing

@MickLH sigh Did you just let your chat bot take over, by chance?

Sadly that was actually my immediate response, although to be fair I am outright playing with him at this point.

@Tyyppi_77 it gives you a simple api to draw things, handle inputs, play audio etc. the minimum you can expect from such framework
does not give you really high level features

Jon
1:15 PM
I'm a monogame expert

It's actually a really vivid image, there is dew on the grass and everything, the coffee is hot and we have blue and white mugs with a trail of steam coming off them.... ok enough of that lol @nathan lets get down to business.
You invited me at you, brah.

@Jon well, i'm not, just a feeling that i have after using mono for few weeks
with mono you will definitively have to write your "engine" on top of it

So @nathan I decided to come at you via the star board. It's looking kinda.... 10 and 0... gg

Jon

oooooooo shiiittt it's really happening

1:19 PM
@MickLH you are making me uncomfortable

Jon
I was trying to inspire myself a little

user92578
I don't know what he's saying, but that's his thing @nathan

Jon
I'm gonna need photoshop

@nathan For your comfort, I will reveal the true nature of my intentions: Entertainment.

Jon
who wants to buy me photoshop?

user92578
1:20 PM
lol

gimp

user92578
did you make that?

get over it

@Tyyppi_77 i'd like to hear why you decided to use C++/SDL2

Jon
naw, its a screenshot from a video

user92578
1:20 PM
ah

Jon
I was trying to pull inspiration from it

@nathan Because C++ is awesome!

it's always a choice i find difficult to understand when it comes to making a game

@Jon.. you phat mother loving father of a son. making me think we're already that far...

(Related: I also use C++ and SDL2, though not the rendering bits of SDL2 (well, excepting for a splashscreen and loading) )

user92578
1:21 PM
@nathan GunHero (that's the name of my game) is actually my first game in C++. I started over a year ago. I wanted to use C++, and SDL API is close to Pygame API, which I was already familiar with.

@nathan he does that.

And I enjoy it honestly

Jon
@MickLH lol, yeah no not quite y

user92578
I just really like the power I get with C++

GIMP ARGH

1:21 PM
muahaha

user92578
I might be changing the rendering to OpenGL one day

Today!

@Jon Nowadays, I prefer to make my visual design work in Inkscape. I found vectors to be just better suited to moving and tweaking picture elements until they "fit".

power?

Jon
eh?

user92578
1:22 PM
yeah, like memory management with pointers

aw i see

user92578
low level access

Jon
I should go with Vector art i guess

user92578
being in control of the things I want

Yes, absolutely @Jon

Jon
1:22 PM
I haven't gotten too much XP in that area though

Inkscape is close enough to acceptable to make a cactus...

I used Inkscape for my LowDown ad. turned out pretty good

@Tyyppi_77 that's a good reason, i used to work a lot with unix system and C language, when i develop games, i love the comfort of Java or C#

Jon
i'll try it out

50x better than GIMP, as far as its quality as an open source piece of software.
it's an SVG editor though, not an image editor.

1:23 PM
I found it to be functionally great, but something about the interface actually annoyed me more than gimp lol

you're weird if you got along better with GIMP (crazy bastard) :D

ty

user92578
@nathan I've never used C# in a game project (I've done a couple of tools in it), but some times I miss the safety of high level languages

user92578
Earlier this week I would've loved to have enum.ToString() like in C#

coming up upon the Towers of Dub, with some of the strangest uses of dog-bark samples I've ever heard.

1:25 PM
and i guess (not sure though), that you make games "faster" in such languages

user92578
actually I don't think that has anything to do with the language

user92578
maybe a bit

@Almo You know dog bark samples are considered a delicacy in dubstep womps

user92578
But mostly it's about the engine/framework you pick

did not know that :)

1:26 PM
lol well the fact that it's somewhere between 20% - 50% bullshit might have something to do with it
although it's nice when someone knows how to use animal sounds in dubstep properly

it's only a matter of choices after all

user92578
yeah, choices that you're stuck with :)

user92578
well, some of them

can't find the image of towers of dub with the dog in a little flying saucer. was funny

user92578
I don't regret my decision at all

user92578
1:27 PM
For sure I'd love to use shaders

@nathan What genre would you pick if someone put a gun to your head and said TAKE CREATIVE CONTROL AND COME UP WITH A GAME NOW!
And then, what technology would you prefer to use for said game

Me... if nothing mattered but getting the gun away from my head, I'd probably do a pychadelic shooter like N20 or Rez.

<-- *releases the slide on his glock, drawing a bullet into the chamber, clearing his throat as he switches it to full auto*

WHICH ONE? ALMO WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE MORE LIKE IF YOU DON'T MIND ME ASKING AT THIS STAGE?

user92578
hmm, randomly when I test the level, a wild blade appears at spawn

lol I think @nathan blocked me

user92578
1:33 PM
I really should redraw the blades

user92578
ugly as hell

@MickLH it's starting to look like psychological harassment mate

user92578
that's his thing too

user92578
join the club hands a club cap for nathan

@MickLH More like N20.
less work, more likelyhood of people buying it
people don't get Rez
:(

1:34 PM
lol almo you're infected
...infected with a sense for your target market

Rez and N20 are both great games though
so I don't lose much picking N20 over Rez
N20 had this trick... you shoot coins 4 times to get most value out of them, then you pick them up.
it trains you that you can run into something that blocks your bullets
then in the bonus levels, there are eggs to shoot the release coins, you shoot them and pick them up
but there are spikes that block your bullets but kill you if you run over them
and the speed just increases until you fuck up.
was a one-man game by Anthony Crowther, who made C64 games I played
N20 was one of the games that sold me on getting a Playstation. That and NFL Blitz.

@Tyyppi_77 I like how, shortly after me unignoring mick you ignore him

user92578
lol

oh wait does he seriously ignore me? lol

user92578
"the circle of ignoring"

1:38 PM
@Tyyppi_77 @MickLH is wondering if you're seriously ignoring him, I'm fairly sure I already know the answer but =p

user92578
Yeah I am

user92578
That was just too much

lmao I thought it was all humor, I didn't realize it was actual butthurt
I'd totally say sorry if he could read it, not something like that :P
Oh! on that note....
@nathan I guess it could be construed as such, but really I'm just trying to get a feel for who you are when the mask comes off.
Also I didn't realize you are the type to use the word "mate" casually, otherwise I would have "come at you" much differently.

i always use mate
that's the way i talk mate

I do feel justified in my actions though as you had literally communicated in a native "bro" language that I should "come at you"

1:43 PM
ya feel me mate?

Choffel, brawski.

take more data before coming at someone :)

Ugh but coming at someone is an easy way to get a nice flood of data

also a good way to get ignored or flagged :|

How could I pass up that upon offer though? It would be plainly illogical.

1:46 PM
can i flag people?
interesting...

If anyone is unable to translate, "Choffel" means "Cha feel", or in this context "Yes, I feel".
Although "Cha feel" can also translate to "Do you feel?"

@nathan Do you feel more comfortable now, knowing there is no room for IRC style bullcrap, and thus being able to infer that I am utterly playful?
(Because I'm still looking pretty 10-star over here, brah)
