Q: Good practice in implementing multi sprite (as skins) in 2d unity game

Moses Apricoso, I want to make such functionality in my 2d game with unity : Multi skin character, with similar control and functionality, and with possible different gimmicks (such as crossy road's characters, which some modify game environment and / or have unique death animation, yet THEY CAN ON...

if you can help, then i'll really appreciate that
:)

Morning chat

Morning Kevin

Morning.
So I was on the "Spiel!" on Saturday, checking out all the cool new board games and whatnot, especially kid's games since I'll have three new nephews by the end of the year (one is already here).
In case one of you wants inspiration for a very well done puzzle game for young kids, here's a company I talked with: smartgames.eu
I had the chance to play a bit, and their games are well-crafted.
(... or if you're just looking for something for Christmas for the youngest members for your family).
(For the record, I have no financial ties whatsoever with that company, I just met them two day ago on the exhibition)

user92578
Good morningdaynight guys

user92578
I now have a two hour break and then one last exam returning

10:04 AM
One of Wikipedia's features articles today is about a man who just was really hungry. Really, really hungry.
> While stationed near Paris, he was recorded as having eaten 174 cats in a year, and although he disliked vegetables, he would eat 4 to 5 pounds (1.8 to 2.3 kg) of grass each day if he could not find other food.

10:31 AM
That's... a lot of food

2 hours later…
Pip
12:18 PM
yeah it is
@Wardy @Ali.S yeah, letter. It's 8.5 inches by 11 inches

user92578
Should I prefer writing two separate asserts instead of one with an && statement?

Two separate has the advantage that, on error, you immediately see which one triggered

I wish WinAPI was wrapped in a namespace...

user92578
Cluttering up Intellisense complection boxes

user92578
I also wish WinAPI didn't suck so hard

user92578
if(SUCCEEDED(res))

user92578
1:25 PM
There's FIVE levels of nested IFs like that in my code for filedialogs

try { doStuff(); doMoreStuff(); doOtherStuff(); } catch ( EveryExceptionImaginable ex ) { report("Stuff broke. Too bad."); } finally { cleanupAfterYourself(); }

user92578
That looks dirty I think

It's how I deal with if (resource1Allocated()) { if (resource2Allocated())) { if (moreResourcesAllocated()) { ... } } } chains.
That, or the Null Object pattern.

user92578
I guess the issue here is that cleanup() has to do specific stuff based on how far I got

Yeah, it typically looks like if (null != res2) { cleanupRes2(); } if (null != res1) { cleanupRes1(); } and so on.

user92578
1:52 PM
Hmm one day I'm going to have to start Linuxproofing the codebase

user92578
2:05 PM
E_INVALIDARG One or more arguments are invalid.

user92578
thanks for letting me know which one...

2:17 PM
Sup @Pip. How's it goin?

Pip
Pretty good
Not done a whole lot of game dev recently
mostly school and robotics

School going well?

Pip
yep!

That's good to hear, man.

so it happened again... i had a novel idea and now half my engine is obsolete and needs re-writing again

2:35 PM
Time to reset the "Time since last game breaking idea" counter.

but its totally worth it, it finally patches together a few rough spots properly

user92578
How do I specify a string with two forward slashes in C++?

and a ton of nice things like being able to render the entire scene with dynamic LOD in one draw call, and get accurate continuous collision detection almost for free
though, it's mutually exclusive with ideas like animations or bones
(of course you can still implement both, and actually it makes it much easier to mix animations with ragdolls on a per-limb basis)
The only downside to it all besides having to toss a lot of perfectly fine code... is that I'll need offline content processors and some kind of object builder and map builder tools

user92578
2:57 PM
"\\"

@Tyyppi_77 Aren't those backwards?

user92578
Oh right

user92578
Look at the star board

user92578
I mean backwards

"\\\\" then? :P

user92578
3:00 PM
Naw, it's just "\\"

Doesn't the first escape the second?

user92578
Apparently not

That's ... weird. :P

user92578
Yeah, but my string replace function works fine

@William'MindWorX'Mariager no? That's how every language ever works

user92578
3:01 PM
Anyways I'll hit the sauna now

First \: Escape the next character, second \: output an actual \ character
I mean, I suppose there are a few languages with different escape characters but that's not the point

@KevinvanderVelden It's not how C# works :P

user92578
I'm confused

"\\" would only print one \

@William'MindWorX'Mariager yes

3:02 PM
You'd need to do "\\\\" to print two.
Which is what he asked for :P

thats how C++ works too

Oh 2
Yeah nevermind

user92578
Yeah

@KevinvanderVelden <3

user92578
But two work fine

3:03 PM
Okay @Tyyppi_77: that's how every language works

user92578
It's not for printing tough, just for a simple replaceAll function

probably because of your buggy code lol

Irrelevant, string literal is string literal

user92578
Weird

Output in said context defined as "Output it to the string literal"

user92578
3:03 PM
Why the fuck does two slashes work then?

lol

The replaceAll function replaces all? :P
So you input one \ and it replaces all \'s :P

user92578
No I call it path.ReplaceAll("/", "\\")

@Tyyppi_77 because \ is the escape character
\0 is "output a byte with the value 0", \n is "output the newline character", \r is carriage return
\\ is \

user92578
Yeah, but "Custom/Path/Here".ReplaceAll("/", "\\") => "Custom\\Path\\Here"

3:06 PM
Where?

user92578
In my code

Did you print it out or in the visual studio debugger?

user92578
debugger I guess

The visual studio debugger is helpful and let's you copy it in a method that would give the same string

place bets now, is he just seeing an escaped version of the string, or is the code buggy, aww nvm lol betting over

3:06 PM
i.e. it escaped the \ for you because otherwise you'd get \P

user92578
ah, so that explains it then

user92578
Thanks

user92578
cya guys

being limited in typing speed by my phone feels shitty

being limited in thinking speed by my brain feels shitty

3:09 PM
ikr
I'm still in bed dreading my medications because I woke up with a clear mind today

Well looks like I missed something fun.

Talking about yesterday? =p
It's not often that after hearing someones arguments for their actions I flip from being in support to them to being opposed to them, but it happened

Ow, I missed some drama. Too bad.

Don't you worry guys, there seems to be almost always some drama in here

Jon

3:18 PM
That's pretty nice!

Jon
Those are my daily sketches, enjoy

I wish I could draw
would make producing programmer art easier

3:35 PM
Just a matter of doing it. It's a skill that can be trained like everything else :P
It's just harder for people like us :P

so im guessing nobody wants to write a shitload of C++ for me?

there's something wrong with my brain, I went to an art course and I learned nothing in a year

Did you apply yourself? :P

well, I was young and my parents asked me if I wanted to go
I didn't want to any more after the year

I used to think there were skills that were out of my realm. But after being forced to be creative as a Game Master, I found out I could learn to make engaging stories.

3:36 PM
it could just be that art courses must be taught by artists, and artists are hit and miss
and sketchy, and on drugs

Pip
@William'MindWorX'Mariager speaking of GM... what game?

@Pip I used to GM Dungeons and Dragons, but for the past few years we use my own homebrew. :)

Pip
cool
I'm trying to get a D&D 4.0 game together atm, looking for tips. Got any?

I just started running a game of D&D 5 though. To try it out.
@Pip Power Cards, they'll make life much simpler for new players.

Pip
How is it? I've heard mixed reactions to 5E
Power cards.... alright, I'll look into those

3:38 PM
I've never finished a game of D&D because I always made the GM ragequit

Keep combat simple at first. Ignore most of the rules at first and then start to include them as you get more familiar. It'll hurt balance, but it's not too bad, and it sure beats grinding the game to a halt.
I'd suggest giving players some leeway with deciding their actions at first, but after a while, you should really encourage them to decide beforehand.

Pip
oh cool power cards look awesome
Thanks!

Yeah, they're god sent.

In case nobody bothered to look up earlier, I had the pleasure to check out the games by Smart Games on this year's Spiel!, and they are awesome - especially those for kids. Totally consider them for Christmas presents if you have very young family members, or as inspiration if you want to make a puzzle game.

Also, goblins, kobolds, skeletons and zombies have some nice beginner opponents.

Pip
3:40 PM
opens Google Drive to write this down
good info :D

Hmm, what else... traps are nice, and are found in the dungeon masters guide.
Treasure parcels help with some loot incase you don't have anything planned, and most people tend to love the randomness :P

Pip
Awesome
I have to grab a DM guide, only have the player stuff for 4E

I had a teacher who played DnD very seriously, sometimes with students. I invented the name BazzleFazzle for him after learning this.
After a couple months of referring to him this way, he decided to have a sit-down talk with me about taking class more seriously. He picked the only one day I came to class on acid..

Pip
lol

I'll never forget the uh.. distorted fragments here and there, of that?
Long story short, he failed the shit out of me but could not withold my state certifications since I met all the course requirements lol
For the record, and to finalize the topic, I was respectful even while being playful, I always said his nickname as if it were an informal title for a desirable person... and I did actually learn the bits about structural engineering that I didn't know already by the end of the course.
But now, it's 9am and I guess I have to force myself to get out of bed and write more C++ than anyone wants to

Pip
4:06 PM
mhm

4:17 PM
If you're simply planning on doing some dungeon crawling, finding some online maze generators is great too
Especially if they contain a few tidbits about the rooms they generate

1 hour later…
5:19 PM
Alrighty, caught up.

With the review cue? =p
45 close votes, more 3k+ people need to vote =[

No, not that one yet. The chat history.
I wonder if there is anyone on the 3k edge.

I'm at 2k =[

:| Why 2k~

2019
To be precise
I dunno
I don't ask stuff cause I can google

5:35 PM
What's your best answer?

And I don't see that many things I can answer because I don't use unity or the other popular stuff

A: How could I implement something like Minecraft's crafting grid?

Kevin van der VeldenYou have to remember that Minecraft only uses a very small set of possible recipes, so there is no need for anything all that smart. That said what I would do is find the smallest grid that fits (i.e. ignore empty rows and columns to find out if it's a 2x2 or 3x3, or 2x3 (door)). Then loop throu...

Which do you think is best though?

(I also like that my best tag on both gaming and gamedev is minecraft)
Uh, hmm
That one is pretty good, gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/87883/… might be better I think

Woo, 2 new 3k users.

Now to see if they'll actually vote =p

5:47 PM
I'm almost at 3k so I should probably start giving out some good answer, or "take out this question" bounties.
But we're coming up on our winter refactor again soon.

Pip
>:D
Hopefully getting to 1500 during the winter refactor

Jon
sup mah nerds

... your nerds?
I'm pretty sure I'm @Tyyppi_77's nerd.

There we go, not actually gaming anymore
Now on to... other stuff
Maybe more games! Maybe finally updating my resume and sending it out
Let's do the adult thing

Pip
@KevinvanderVelden you mean more games, right. Because that's obviously the adult thing to do here.

5:58 PM
Alas it is not, given that I want a new job with more free time for games(dev)

Pip
What's your current job desc?

Programmer
C#/ASP.NET/SQL/bash scripts-only-I-use-but-save-so-much-time
The latter meaning that there are several tasks that only I ever do

Pip
ah I see

Pip
@William'MindWorX'Mariager can you recommend a good first-level premade campaign? A few of us have played before (myself included) but I definitely want to start out the group with something that's already been put together.

@Pip I never played any 4E premades, sorry :(

Pip
3.5 seems like what we're been playing actually. The others have experience with 3.5 so that's what we're going with.

Ohh
Very different game :P
Power Cards are useless :P

Pip
Yeah, I found that out :P

7:25 PM
D&D eh?
I found the game great fun, but only because the social experience was amazing and not because the rules were any good.
We're going to try Apocalyspe World soon; it seems to be much less gamey.
It also has a very well-written manual, especially the part for the GM. Also very nice 'class' descriptions:
> Even in the filth of Apocalypse World, there’s food that isn’t death on a spit, music that isn’t shrieking hyenas, thoughts that aren’t afraid, bodies that aren’t used meat, sex that isn’t rutting, dancing that’s real. There are moments that are more than stench, smoke, rage and blood.

Anything beautiful left in this ugly ass world, skinners hold it. Will they share it with you? What do *you* offer *them*?

Pip
7:43 PM
@Lokkij That's exactly why my dad has kept playing for like 15 years with the same group, even after the group has spread out all over North America
They originally started all working together at a company in Pennsylvania (fairly north, east coast).
Now, people are in western Canada, Seattle, Pennsylvania, and here near Washington, DC
And they still play every week or so
Using a website called Roll20

Depending on what game they're playing, you should recommend Fantasy Grounds. I prefer it whenever possible.

Jon
7:59 PM
wish star wars battlefront was cheaper
cuz the beta is pretty good
if they only have those 7 scenes in the full version though... not enough content
next monday is ELECTION DAY !!!!
Our bigot tyrant corporate spokesperson is HOPEFULLY going to end his career

1 hour later…
9:07 PM
@Pip and why do you think I'm interested? You know I dislike microsoft. :)

Jon
main reason to hate microsoft right now, is that they are making halo 5 xbone exclusive
game like that needs to be played on the PC

heh
