4:12 PM
off with their heads!

user92578
I don't think I can find a reasonable priced free standing dual monitor stand

They're expensive because who uses them
They're... a bit niche

cant wall mount or desk mount the stands?
I've seen some pretty tidy desk attached mounts
clamps on to the desk and holds up to 3 screens (depending on what you get)

user92578
I don't think wall mounting is an option

user92578
And my desk is not very good in quality, and there's only a quite tight gap for the desk mounting portion

4:15 PM
ok ... step 1: get decent desk ... every programmer needs a good desk

user92578
If the standard monitor stands just weren't so fucking huge

user92578
They come like almost 10 cm out of the monitors

user92578
So I can't fit anything right between/front of the monitors

user92578
Well, I can fit my super small keyboard in between them

user92578
But if I'd want a bigger one... no chance

4:23 PM
I had a question

user92578
Hi

Well
I want to learn Java game development
So I need a place to learn (website)

Shall I just link your question from the site? =p

Q: Java Game Dev Tutorial Sites

TechyEngineerI'm currently learning how to code in Java, and I want to learn how to actually program a game (I used Unity but want to use code). I looked around online and I can't really seem to find anything good for teaching me. I hate using YouTube videos because they are hard to learn from by watching so...

(I'm the one who commented btw :) )

user92578
Aaaaand flagged. :)

4:26 PM
Yes that's what I did which is why he's here @Tyyppi_77 =p

I had the question but you said it would be closed

user92578
Yeah, it will be.

Yeah but it still exists so we can reference it in chat

Anyway, first question I have to ask you; how much programming do you know?

4:27 PM
I know the basics. Variables, the original syntax, while loops, if else, do while loops... That's about it. But I'm learning the basics like arrays and things
Also printing and user input

Okay, cool. I'd recommend against doing stuff with 3d then to be honest, 3d makes it really a lot more complicated

user92578
Yeah, starting with 2D games is a lot easier.

Yeah I was thinking about a 2d game like dodging falling objects

Now, personally I don't use java (don't like the language) so I don't have much experience with it

All I really need is a link to one of those rare interactive websites for java

user92578
4:29 PM
I haven't watched a lot of these, but in general the maker of these seems like a pretty smart guy, so you might find something out of these:

On Java I recommend LibGDX or if you want even more low-level then LWJGL

user92578
However in general I'm not a huge fan of the direct Java-approach he is taking.

user92578
Nor do I like video tutorials in general.

user92578
LibGDX seems to be a (good and) popular solution these days.

user92578
4:31 PM
Anyways I gotta get going, see you guys tomorrow!

I don't like video tutorials. They aren't productive for learning plus
What language do you use to program? And do you make games with it?

Me? C++, with a bunch of libraries

Oh ok
I find that a difficult language

It is
Which is half the fun =p

I'm using mostly C#

4:33 PM
@Tyyppi_77 I can very much vouch for that

Do you think there are any interactive websites like CodeAcademy for Java?

Java? Probably, games + java? Doubtful

I guess your right

(codecademy has a java section btw codecademy.com/courses/learn-java, mostly empty though)

@TechyEngineer Java seems to be good for "flash like" games or simplified versions of things (eg minecraft) consider c# ... similar in syntax but a much stronger tool set for game construction

4:35 PM
@Wardy java is not good for minecraft, source: minecraft

Thats personal opinion by the way
@KevinvanderVelden I didn't so much mean that it was good for minecraft, more what it was / is typically used for because of the available tooling

Are there any good sites for C# game construction?

@TechyEngineer Anything targetted at unity
unity also supports unityscript which is essentially a javascript subset if that's your preference

Minecraft could perform so much better if it was programmed properly, with or without Java.

(I've heard no good things about using unityscript, CC @Chris)

4:37 PM
completely agree Lasse

@Lasse yeah I suppose java could run it properly, if it were better coded

Having played with voxels for some time now I have unity (which I consider to not be great for voxels) to be able to spit out much better results and much faster with reasonably well written code
A decent async game engine can probably handle voxels even better
I'd like to see minecraft / some sort of voxel engine built from the ground up and given away for free
failing that, I will continue to build my voxel framework for unity and maybe one day chuck it on the unity store

I had one coming up but I have somewhat forgot the project
Maybe one day

aww my planets have 2 gaps in them :(

4:43 PM
i take issue with polyvox
when I put it under pressure it died
:(

Off by one error?

i hate spherical meshing math

that's one huge ravine
call it a feature

yeh i think it is but the mesh gen works mostly apart from this region and another about 1/3rd the way round
I think its something to do with my converting a region defined in degrees to radians
public class PlanetRegion
{
    public float North { get; set; }
    public float South { get; set; }
    public float West { get; set; }
    public float East { get; set; }

    public PlanetRegion ToRadians()
    {
        var radian = (float)(Math.PI * 2) / 360f;
        return new PlanetRegion {
            West = West * radian,
            East = East * radian,
            North = North * radian,
            South = South * radian
        };
    }

	public override string ToString()
	{
		return string.Format ("[North={0}, South={1}, West={2}, East={3}]", North, South, West, East);
any ideas how I can fix this?

I think you're just off by one =p

4:48 PM
yeh but how do I detect that?

Show me the rendering bit?
Or alternatively, print each of the regions

or should I say ... how do I detect that the region I am working on wont line up with the next one

Debug print min and max, make sure that it actually ends at max, not before

for(float inc = -90f; inc < 90f; inc += incStep)
	for(float az = -180; az < 180; az += azStep)
	{
		CreateRegion(new Voxels.Objects.PlanetRegion {
			North = inc + incStep,
			South = inc,
			East = az + azStep,
			West = az
		});
	}
that generates the regions in degrees

Yup, off by one
Try replacing < with <=
(At least, if I'm reading this right)

4:50 PM
I think the issue may be in here (the code that builds the verts) ....
// determine range and stepping variable
var range = region.ToRadians();
var verticalStep = (range.North - range.South) / (verticals - 1);
var horizontalStep = (range.East - range.West) / (horizontals - 1);

//range.South -= verticalStep;
//range.East += horizontalStep;

// define result containers
var vertList = new List<Vector3>();
var uvList = new List<Vector2>();
// ok lets do this
for (double az = range.West; az <= range.East; az += horizontalStep)
{
    for (double inc = range.North; inc >= range.South; inc -= verticalStep)
sry bout that
browser acting wierd
No idea why these 2 commented out lines are here ...
//range.South -= verticalStep;
//range.East += horizontalStep;
I get the feeling I may have seen this before then started to think about solutions and stopped
My thinking is that the conversion ....
degrees > radians > spherical pos > cartesian pos
... is introducing rounding / precision problems somewhere

5:08 PM
Probably, but at that scale?

the whole thing is only 500 in radius
hmmm ... wonder what happens if i make it render an earth sized planet
at this scale 1 pixel on the surface texture = 1KM^2 on the ground

Try rendering every other column
If the gaps are the same size as the one you have now then it's an off by one error

This week's Sunday Papers contains some really good articles on games once again.

@KevinvanderVelden I'm fairly confident thats what it is ... just not sure how to resolve it without breaking it for other parts of the planet

Jon
5:43 PM

Is it "sup dog"?

Jon
meet superdog

Nope, headcanon established, that is no "sup dog"

Jon
He flies just like superman, but he is a dog
here he is saving a plane
demonstrating his super canine strength

Jon
6:28 PM

Teh fck?

Jon
i write small prototypes for fun
that one took about 5 minutes lol
15 with the art

What method did you use for animation?

6:48 PM
@Jon you should publish them on a blog or something
have the explanation and the source

7:04 PM
@Jon and is that super worm?

Ok so i appear to have cracked the art of "running heavy voxel stuff the crashes windows"
that's twice in the last 5 mins

7:29 PM
ok wow
my voxel code really does produce some epic results

hi guys

sup @nathan
some edging issues, but this is to scale ... this particular generated planet is roughly 15k to earths 12.7k in diameter
yay ... just realised i got some productivity this weekend and completed something cool :)

7:50 PM
@Wardy looks cool : ) i've been kinda productive myself this weekend

@nathan thx :)

Pip
8:32 PM
HOLOLENS DEV KITS $3000
FUCK
@Jon @Almo @JoshPetrie @Wardy @William'MindWorX'Mariager @Tyyppi_77 @TheMuffinCoder @KevinvanderVelden @Ali.S See above

@Pip seriously... everyone but me?
:P

@Pip you know that news is about a week old right?

Pip
Pretty cool features though... totally untethered
Yeah, just finding out now though :/

@Pip im more interested in the surface book
I mean ... wow what a machine!!!

Pip
8:36 PM
That looks cool as well

@Pip well the video presenting hololens was shared in this room about last week, and the price was mentioned in that video

I would pre order right now if i had the cash

Pip
That looks pretty awesome

@Wardy I'm waiting for razer... to see what kind of monster are they going to bring to the table

Pip
Probably not getting one but it looks cool

8:37 PM
have you seen what they offered last year?

@Ali.S whatever it is it wont be 7.7mm thick ... thats some serious achievement
also the current thinking is that the gpu in the surface book is a 950M or 960M ... no one really knows yet

@Wardy it sure was not... it was 18mm, but they offered such a monsterous processing power...

All I know is it's been customised for the book so it may be pretty pokey

I mean it has GTX970M for graphics
and 4720HQ as cpu
with 16GB ram... while offering 5 hours of gaming on battery

@Ali.S microsoft claim the book will give you 12 hours
same spec basically (its a 6th gen i7)

8:41 PM
@Wardy not at all... both graphics and the cpu are way more efficient)

you don't think its possible to get 12 hours from a surface book?

@Wardy I think it's possible but I don't consider it to be a fair comparison...
for example 4720HQ uses about 3 times more power compared to 6500u

the fact that the surface uses less power is a plus to me
I want to play games, I don't want to pay the electricity bill for power I really don't need to use for that experience

@Wardy I'm saying if razer introduces a new version this year, it might be on par with surface book on that page

yeh that might be an interesting machine to see
What I do like however is that the surface is still a surface, you can remove it from the base if you don't need the gpu
or turn the tablet round to use it whilst walking about with the gpu
@Ali.S however looking at that ... its 2 generations of CPU behind ... so a 6th gen razor machine ... certainly worth some serious taking note!
yay .. my planets now generate and render in the unity editor
editable procedurally generated planets :)
anyone know the difference between material and sharedmaterial properties on a unity renderer?
its telling me there's some reason I should only setup shared material in code due to memory leaks ... seems like an odd error

9:21 PM
Skip to 1 hour 16 mins
I can't find a reason to not want to do game dev on this

@Wardy hololens?

na surface book
although earlier in that same keynote video there is a segment on hololens

@Wardy the only thing I don't like about surface (family) is the aspect ratio
why is it 3/2

instead of 16/9 ?
americans huh
its designed to be the same size as their standard sheet of paper (we have A4 they have letter or whatever they call it)

@Wardy we do use mostly use A4 too, but there is also a size called "vaziri" which is mostly used for books and those kinda things
and used by those who want to express their nationality
I just noticed it's 3/2 too

9:31 PM
what is ?

It doesn't have an english wiki page
the page size called vaziri, which is used widely in iran
reading more... it used to be 3/2 but the same name is given to papers of size (20x13cm)

1 hour later…
10:51 PM
wow continuations are fun to implement :)

11:11 PM
yay got it working :)

11:48 PM
do you guys know any site to download sound effects?
