Campaign for more!

I'll make a post in that meta thread

Or roll 2 into the getting started one?

Should the first one be made into a clickable link?

A: Off Topic variations

TetradThe new off topic mechanism is in place, and we only have space for 3 custom close reasons. The top close reasons seem to be the following, so this is what I would propose: "Which tech should I use to X" (off topic because it'll usually just be a list of answers. More detail here: Are "What s...

yes but annoyingly you can't edit active close reasons
I'll fix it
or rather, I think I'll replace it with the "how do I get started" question
since I feel it's more prevalent

11:07 PM
Kind of a toss up between "how to get started" and "fix my code" as far as how frequently they come up isn't it?

well
actually I think we can delete the "should be on stack overflow" one since the migration path is different
either way, I added a new one, feel free to activate it if you want gamedev.stackexchange.com/admin/flags/close-as-off-topic
I'd also concede that "how should I get started" also fits with the default close reason "primarily opinion based"

Seems like you could easily merge to this:

Questions about "how to get started" or "what should I learn next" or "which tech to use" cannot reasonably be answered with anything other than opinion polling and therefore are off topic for the site. For more information on how to ask a better question, see the [help center](http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/help/dont-ask)
Just adding the which tech to use to that close reason...
Since it's essentially the same reasoning.

well specifically with "which tech" questions, if you can ask "how do I do X" instead of "what do I use to do X" and it turns into a good question it might be worth calling out explicitly in the close reason
either way it isn't something we have to solve immediately, I just thought I'd start the conversation up again now that we have the feature
I'd recommend mulling it over and being active in that meta thread in the mean time

That's a good point.
Will do.
I can approve it for now, and we can change it later if required.

wow

11:19 PM
That's why it's illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. :p
I guess she/he had no sense of smell. 'Cause that should have been pretty obvious.

lol

Does this person clean their windshield with gasoline often i wonder?

hey new moderator @Byte56

@PythonInProgress You may speak regular user. What is it?

LOL
just saying hi for now
@Byte56 cool video ^

11:31 PM
I've had that happen with beers before.
They must let it go flat first?
Mine would always freeze right when I opened the bottle
Oh, added pressure.
That makes sense.
It's pretty neat.

yep :D
it took a few tries for me, but it worked

Science!

Science FTW!

It works really well with bottled water

Super cooled liquids

11:35 PM
:P

The container has to be very smooth and clean.

yep @Byte56

Yep to that one too.

And the liquid needs to be relatively clear of debris

11:36 PM
yeah

Yeah, nothing that will start the reaction.

Boiling water gets an interesting reaction for the same reason.

really? i havnt tried water

Mozilla Firefox delivers 3D gaming to the web with new Firefox 22, available now at epic.gm/ff22

11:36 PM
Sorry, said that wrong.
Mind in too many places

people told me I was crazy when I said GTA 6 would be browser based

@AlexM. @Byte56 what programming language should i learn, im starting over, deleting all of my unfinished progects, etc

Does it do something that three.js or webgl don't do?

@PythonInProgress A high level language like C# or Java

11:38 PM
Or Native client?

C# sounds good

@Noctrine did not look deep enough into it, but I am sure they're relating it to their asm.js at least somehow
also, I've seen the Unreal Engine being embedded inside Firefox once

@AlexM. so, what language should i learn?

Like this
C# or Java, Byte just told you :p

@PythonInProgress pseudocode

11:40 PM
@AlexM. that does not count
@Noctrine yeah, want Alex's opinion :P
yours too

you heard my opinion

Still trying to convince him to hire you?

eventually

@Noctrine that made my laptop's vent go WOOOOOOSH
and reminded me it's been a while since I played any Quake Live
I'm wondering if it turned freemium yet
3D on the Web

WebGL brings 3D graphics to Firefox, opening the door for developers to create vivid games and new kinds of visualizations and experiences on the Web.
yeah, it's WebGL

@PythonInProgress What languages do you know now?

11:43 PM
@Byte56 some python, a tiny bit of C#

What is a ton of python?

not all of it (not a master) but enough to get by and read other peoples code

that's hardly "a ton"

:P i never said it was
LOL

Huh, I thought you did say that, but the chat clearly shows you didn't.

11:45 PM
:P
except for the little "edited" pencil icon

Do you know what you don't know?

There you go

@Noctrine I'd rather go with a classification of which I read in some book...
I can't remember the name

Where's the one that says, "Understands how these are ranked".
Oh

11:47 PM
there were a few categories of programmers, based on the programmer's knowledge and overall attitude

Heh: "is able to understand the relevance of the levels of this matrix."

the final was something like "transcendental programmer"
and how a transcendental programmer will never be sure he is one and will always consider himself to be a tier below it

Yes. When we're interviewing someone and they've been programming for 4 years and say they're an 8/10 with C++, we know they're actually more like a 2 or 3.
When someone has been programming for 15 years and say they're a 6/10 in C++, they're more like a 9/10.

That requires a bit of knowledge of C though.

well, this quote has been attributed to a lot of people
but I'm guessing Mark Twain is the most popular in terms of choices

bookmarking both of those links :D

11:51 PM
@Byte56 I think, being aware of the imposter syndrome kind of diminishes it. But it's weird.
People have been recently contacting me for senior / architect type positions and I honestly feel like I'm no where near ready for that.
@PythonInProgress I have a few more.

@PythonInProgress after you've gone through those links and actually studied what's in them, come back with a message for me

i have to go for a while

I guess you just have to ask yourself, what would it take for you to be ready for that?

will do Alex, about what?

I want you to answer these simple questions:
1. How smart are you?

11:53 PM
LOL

2. Why do you want to program computers?
I advise you to ask as many questions as possible on the SE while browsing through links

@AlexM. It's been around a little longer: "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding." -- Bible, 'Proverbs' 17:28

had no idea, thanks :)

I normally ask classmates who want me to help them out question 1)
makes it easy to weed out people who'd only waste my time with "I FOUND A BUG IN THE COMPILER" or "ECLIPSE IS SHIT, IT WON'T WORK"
but I want another answer from @PythonInProgress
if at the programming fundamentals course, students were taught how to take blame for anything that does not work on their computer while they're coding it...
students wouldn't be failing exams today because "eclipse is giving me some error!"

11:57 PM
1) Smart enough to not answer any of your questions.... DOH!

@Byte56 #swag

Stuff we all get?

sorry?

I don't understand how people use SWAG today

A wreath?

11:58 PM
I always knew it as Stuff We All Get.
Like free give aways at conventions or whatever.

A window valence?

I first found out about it when it was #swag

Stolen goods?

Now people use it like it means hip.

your reply sounded like it could be continued like

11:59 PM
Shortened form of the slang term swagger

1) Smart enough to not answer any of your questions.... DOH! #swag #toogood4u
that's what I meant

In the rich internet tradition of not using the full word.
@AlexM. No. No.
