By the power vested within me... Awaken!
Lol :P

hummmphhh
WHO CALLS UPON THE MIGHTY ALEX M.
squasher of IRL bugs
2

killer of kittens
and king of frost

well those are some good questions

3:40 PM
I've found if I just live and do things I normally do, for some reason I get people who want to be friendly. I don't really understand it. They're probably crazy.

Fast qustion: if i have a server which implements physics is it okay to have a thread for every 2 players in which i run a Box2D world for them?

Ah, Hi Romeo

Hi John :D

So @JohnMcDonald It appears we can already "invite" users to chat rooms we create.

@Byte56 Oh, nice

3:44 PM
@IcyDefiance lucky you I guess

@Romeo I wasn't quite sure what to your comment with, because it really depends how you've built the game
For some context to others:
1
A: How to implement server side physics?

John McDonald How should I implement the physics on the server? As per rasmuses answer to a similar question, you want to run the physics simulation on both the client and server. If the physics does not run on the client, then it will look very choppy. And if the physics does not run on the server, then ...

The info page for the chat rooms has this: i.imgur.com/Ajm33Al.png

I kinda gave up on the idea of finding a "friend"

@AlexM. not really. I still don't have more than a couple people I call friends. I can't entirely hide my contempt for idiocy even when I try to be nice, so a lot of people end up disliking me soon enough.

@JohnMcDonald well I will have the physics simulation on both the client and the server.

3:46 PM
I just maintain reciprocal dependency relationships with others

But i don't know if it is okay to open a thread for every 2 players.
When they decide to start a game

Well, that kind of depends on how many simultaneous games you expect (or hope for)

And in those Threads to have game loops....
Well...

worse part is, most of the things I need I get from people I'd normally not stand otherwise

Let's say about 100

3:47 PM
so I just try to get along

hi agan :D

and if the need arises, I do something for them to keep the scales in balance

If the game becomes popular I will create a cluster.

My first thought is that you can design it to work with 1 thread, and each game is updated back to back within the main loop

perhaps figure out how many games can be updated in a single loop while still maintaining performance, then make a new thread for every x games? I've never made a server, just throwing something out there.
err, game server, that is

3:49 PM
Not a bad idea

/me thinks he is being ignored by everyone

debates whether to say "yep" or just continue ignoring

Yeah, but that means to have a World (with many objects on it; {2 objects per player + 10- 15 objects per map [every game will have a map] + spells/arrows(bullets)} * n. of games )

@IcyDefiance "yep or just continue igoring!!!!!!

@Romeo Are the maps all identical? There are probably a few opportunities for memory optimizations, but I wouldn't worry about that at this stage

3:52 PM
so @CodeAssassin

ta fuk?

@JohnMcDonald Well, no, i will provide the gamer with more than one map, so he can choose one. I think i could create on the world the objects for each type of map then add users who choose that map to collide only with it and each other.

Doesn't hurt to start thinking about what bits are specific to a pair of players, and what can be shared among games. But I wouldn't try to optimize that at this stage

Excuse my spelling and english. I am a little tired, all day programming and learning for exams xD

3:54 PM
I would just have one map per game

no one uses spelling and ingles around here.... :P

@JohnMcDonald so I should stick with one map per game for now huh?

Hey Toddlers

@PythonInProgress i see! xD

:D bye all

3:56 PM
@PythonInProgress Bye bye.

cya later

right now I am trying to develop clone of zuma deluxe, so I need suggestion on that

@Romeo don't worry mate

right now I am doing something before I got suggestion on that

io-ti inteleg engleza
e oke

3:57 PM
@Romeo Not knowing a lot about your maps, I'm assuming the memory overhead would be minimal

previous time I got suggestion from "Jon"

@AlexM. e bun :D

@PythonInProgress huh

@JohnMcDonald they will look something like the maps in this game but customized, but only rectangles in principle. (armorgames.com/play/666)

Yeah, the map overhead will be minimal

4:02 PM
Can't play gams
;-;

Ohh ok. So one Thread for the whole server to rule them all and one map per game.. I see.

@CodeAssassin you can't play violent games
but you can play secret of the magic crystals!

games
all of them
Banned

what kind of parents would ban secret of the magic crystals
it's goty

Lol
Looks like a mobile game

4:04 PM
trust me, this game will make your video card scream
see that hors?
there's freaking tesselation on it

@Romeo That's what I would try first, yes. Keep the games fairly separate so that you could make small handful of threads to do the jobs, if you end up needing it
2

see that arrow?
it bounces

@CodeAssassin it's very nice that you started programming so young :D

@AlexM. Just for the hair lol?

but for each variation in position, a new thread is started

4:04 PM
@Romeo Thanks man ^_^

see that water? there's a shitload of CUDA stuff in it

@AlexM. Is this Tomb Raider Pony Edition?
2

nope
it's...
I don't even know how to say it, I'll paste my steam recommendation for it
this game has hors in it and you can do quests and all kinds of objects have levels and stats and you can run with the hors or something shit it I dont know but its better than call of duty
I only played half an hour though

I remember something like a quest with the horse, the neighbor, and plowing
but I don't remember if you plow his garden or his wife
or if the horse is involved in any way

4:07 PM
@John thanks man. I really appreciate your help! :D

Yeah, no problem. And good luck!

Also, how to make my loop run 60 times per second. :D
Oh, thanks, i really need luck. xD

what if there actually is a way to make a game run at X FPS constantly
but game companies keep it hidden and simulate lag
so we keep on buying new hardware
:O

Q: Fixed time step vs Variable time step

Nick SonneveldWhat is better for games when developing game loops, fixed time steps or variable time steps? What type of games are better with one or the other? Variable time steps: With variable time step, I mean physics updates will take in some sort of "time elapsed since last update" argument and hence ...

I think I should let the creator of Thomas Was Alone know of my game 'Minimal'. It would make him very happy.

4:10 PM
I think that is what I have implemented for my server loop.

@CodeAssassin depends on what you say
if you say "this is inspired by your awesome game :D" you'll get him to like it

@AlexM. I've talked to him via email before(and have talked to him about making a fan-game before).
He already knows I like it - like I said I have talked to him via email :D

if you say "LOOK AT THIS YOU PIECE OF CRAP, THIS WILL MAKE YOUR GAME DIE"
then he'll probably dislike it

@JohnMcDonald

public void runServer() {
final int TICKS_PER_SECOND = 25;
final int SKIP_TICKS = 1000 / TICKS_PER_SECOND;
final int MAX_FRAMESKIP = 5;

long next_game_tick = System.nanoTime();
int loops;
float interpolation;

boolean game_is_running = true;
while( game_is_running ) {

loops = 0;
while( System.nanoTime() > next_game_tick && loops < MAX_FRAMESKIP) {
//update game
world.step(1.0f / 60.0f, 6, 2);
next_game_tick += SKIP_TICKS;
loops++;
}
interpolation = System.nanoTime() + SKIP_TICKS - next_game_tick

@AlexM. Lol

4:16 PM
But i don't know if System.nanoTime() is really what i need.

:/ I don't know either

ohh ok :D

Email has been sent!
Oh snaaaaaap
kk guys afk

5:02 PM
now you all friends have to answer my question
sorry if you have time
for that
because I am waiting for long time

I haven't seen any question yet.

right now I am trying to develop clone of zuma deluxe

@Siddharth you need to stop asking to ask questions
imagine if the PC worked the same way

I have done some work on that but doesn't get enough result

if (pcWouldLikeToExecute()) execute();

5:05 PM
previous time I got suggestion from "Jon"
my basic question is, how to move ball on particular path?
right now I am work with andengine

mm, I have nearly no experience with engines, so I'll back out.
yay tetris clone is now playable. perhaps I should set up version control on this thing now...

6:07 PM
speaking of tetris
this is madness

1 hour later…
7:19 PM
saw that vid before
that instant-fall tetris is actually easier, once you get used to it
not that it's easy to be as insanely good as he is at it

I should write an article about using drawer menus inside an Android app w/ the default control
it's a pretty new functionality so the most decent article is Google's
ah yes, finally, some rain <3
it's a storm actually, but can't be picky in times like these

7:48 PM
it's funny how I used the GitHub for Windows thing for a while, and it worked fine, but I never really learned what I was doing until BitBucket forced me to use the Git Bash

I'm using GitGui on Windows

I have that too, but it actually looked more daunting than the bash, lol

also this is one of the most beautiful things I've heard in a while
@IcyDefiance nah, I got used to it :)
I only used the git bash once on Windows, and it was to batch rename some files that were totally unrelated to git
I just wanted a unix-like bash on windows for a simple op
Git sure saved my ass last time
I was crazy enough to do a solution-wide search and replace for something involving brackets
for my scripts obviously it worked fine
but I forgot that scripts by others (unity plugins) are included in the solution
so I messed up more than 1500 scripts
were it not for git, I'd still be fixing things
because MonoDevelop can't undo regex replaces

wow, yeah

I also like MonoDevelop's integration with git
I can do diffs and reverts right from within the IDE

8:08 PM
and that song you linked is a whole lot better on my stereo than on my headphones. very nice the second time.

hey guys
@CodeAssassin how old are you again?

8:36 PM
yeah, forgot about the worst thing about home
the internet is blazing fast but...
let just a stronger wind pass by, and it drops

8:51 PM
whys that @AlexM.

how the hell should I know
I'm not my isp

hmm. now you are
:P jk
that would be weird

9:04 PM
@PythonInProgress Does it matter >:| (OFFENDED BEYOND COMPREHENSION)
I am 90 years old man..... you shouldn't ask ppl their ages!
Want to know my weight too :(
Lolololololol jk
13 yrs old
Accomplishments: I can tie my shoelaces with one hand.

I'd proudly state those 13 years if I were you
especially when asked by another 13 yr old

No... It must be kept sekrit!
Nah I'm out of his class!
Turning 14 on the 28th!

awesome! :D

@AlexM. 4200 Entries in the 2013 Stem Compo
Winners announced on the 30th I think
So no one has been notified
(or knows who they are)
(except the judges)

what was the topic of the compo again?

9:10 PM
There was no topic. It was just to make a game. Educational or not Educational

ah
seeing the Stem there I thought it was having a defined topic

Nah it's just to promote "problem solving" and all that jazz
Spending my whole day on twitter
it is fun.
@AlexM. When do I become junior programmer?
ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL PLOX

mine or someone else's? :D

ur's. Asking because I don't want to fail horribly. Trust me - the code for minimal was shaaaaaaaaaammeeee so I need to read up more on good coding practices. List books I need to read if necessary :D

the problem is, I'm pretty closed to other programmers atm :(
and you're too young for me to exploit
I'd rather use my college classmates to make money instead

9:20 PM
kk, no probz

you should totally finish the pragmatic programmer though
I'm almost done with it, 30 pages to go :D catch up on me

@AlexM. haha I totally forgot about that
I was too busy reading Rework by Jason Fried O:

tell you what
I'm planning to build up a few structured 'courses' for certain stuff like Android development
so I can get a couple of my classmates to actually be able to DO something valuable
evil grin
if you want, I can share those with you
I should also have a somewhat stable foundation for Ars Ignis by August
maybe you can join in then

:D YAY

hey if you're willing to share them with me as well, I was planning to experiment with android dev at some point anyway, might be cool

9:30 PM
sure

9:41 PM
I found this really cool piece of software on the ubuntu center
for home planning and decorations
I'll share a screenshot in a bit
here

Oh wow

anyone ever wondered why the sims is one of the few games with no competitors
it literally has a monopoly

there aren't many games like the sims

i know thats what i mean

there was one: singles - flirt up your life

9:54 PM
oh that was aweful xD
im just surprised no company has considered trying to take the sims on

well
candy crush saga is more popular so...

GTA used to have a monopoly for its style but now everyone is doing open city worlds
a persistant online sims would probably be only way to defeat the sims

I don't think the open city world was what made GTA be GTA

its one of the few games persistant online world is kinda the logical step for it
well i dunno it was quite an achievement on PS2 when GTA 3 was out

I'm pretty sure not even Saints Row is competition for GTA
they both try to achieve diff things

9:57 PM
well i was thinking like watch dogs.

candy crush saga is unpleasant.

I always thought Watch Dogs was more like Mafia
Mafia was trying to GTA, yeah

well its based on different aspect of criminal life
GTA is gangs normally
and of course cars :P

GTA is satire normally

i got to a particular level, and it was clear that it was a matter of luck if it was even doable

9:58 PM
Mafia is srs bzns

the chocolate stage put me off candy crush

Unlike LoL, I feel at every turn it is saying "Pay me!"

plus the quests to slow me down even more

LoL says "pay me if you want. or don't. I don't care."

I'm not even sure why you'd try such casual bullshit in the first place
if 10yr old girls on Facebook are crazy about a game

9:59 PM
because bejeweled blitz and zuma blitz are excellent games

you can be sure it's not good

I was hoping someone else had come up with another good one

i took a look to see how they made it in a browser
they don't use Canvas
which i was surprised by
