Q: Advertising in Friends

asmgxI am a big Friends fan and I watched it many times recently I kept noticing that Friends has many brands promoting embedded in the show. For example Be Your Own Windkeeper Book Porsche Cars Pottery Barn macy's bloomingdales Ralph Lauren Gucci Waxeen and many many more I am not sure if Frien...

I feel guilty for not watching Blade Runner 2049 in theatres or sooner... Glad I at least finally watched it now... Such a masterpiece! :)

3:26 AM
@NikhilEshvar i don't
i still havn't
i've seen the original one over 20 times

I watched neither of them and I'm not guilty.
Guilty for not watching a film?? @NikhilEshvar , you should learn something from politicians.

3:57 AM
@NogShine Politicians will say they watched the movie and if you verify their claim, they will proclaim you as Anti-Indian :P
@Memor-X The original one started out really slow since they favored showcasing the visual effects and the city over the plot but as it progressed, it was good too...
And seeing the original one made me identify some characters in 2049 right away and fleshed out the plot too

2 hours later…
5:46 AM
@NikhilEshvar I haven't seen it yet. I tired going to theater but got no company
@NikhilEshvar yeah I found original one way to slow and felt bored
@NikhilEshvar you have seen short films too?
@NogShine lol

6:13 AM
@AnkitSharma Yes, only the blackout short film mattered though... The others felt like extra add-ons... But it takes like just 20 minutes or so and so it can't been seen before the movie to understand the motivations

So who's got a bet on how many people are going to rage when Logan Paul gets hurt in this up and coming fight?
like people who thought that it was just going to be for show but the other guy was actually doing a real boxing match
(i totally forgot this was a thing until i just saw a phillip defranco video reminding me)

6:29 AM
@NikhilEshvar I have seen them long back but not the film. I even asked question about it

Q: Is it necessary to watch the Blade Runner short films before Blade Runner 2049 to understand the story?

Ankit SharmaI am planning to watch Blade Runner 2049 soon, and I'm going to watch the original Blade Runner (1982) film soon, too, to prepare for this film, but what about the three short films made in the same universe? I heard they made three short films: 2036: Nexus Dawn 2048: Nowhere to Run Blade Run...

Q: Is it appropriate to ask about movie plot points which I don't understand because the movie is in Chinese?

Rebecca J. StonesI'm studying the Chinese movie 妖猫转 (Legend of the Demon Cat) in an effort to improve my Chinese. There's major plot points I don't understand because my Chinese is insufficient. This particular movie also involves Chinese history and Chinese poetry. While it seems foreign-language films are on...

7:31 AM
@AnkitSharma Yup now I will scour all the blade runner questions now that I saw the movie. I did not want to be hit with spoilers on the way... Expect some sudden upvotes :P

@NikhilEshvar who can say no to free rep ;)

Q: Where did Han and Chewie take a shower in Solo?

Steven RandsIn the Solo movie Han and Chewie take a shower. Now I've only seen the movie a couple of times, but from memory this scene happens If so, this would imply that they take a shower while still on the AT-Hauler, which seems a little odd. Where did the shower scene take place?

A J
@MovieReel Never thought that someone would be interested about this scene. :P

A J
@Paulie_D I have watched this movie.
I think I have the answer
I am posting it.

@AJ good luck
@AJ if they can show bat-butts in BvS then why not solo-butt

@AnkitSharma Huh?
@Paulie_D Thanks for the video. I was looking for one to back up my last point.

hey guys and gals: quick question, aren't there any questions regarding Safe? I wanted to ask one and looked for a possible dupe
I guess the real question is: is [safe] the right tag?

I think if there's no tag for it, then it's fine to just use the tag "safe", however Wikipedia shows there's been two movies also titled "Safe", so "safe-tv" may be better and would clearly indicate it's for the TV show.
Also be sure to note in the tag's useage directions that it's for "the 2018 television series".
So wait, why was the TNG tag done away with?

2:43 PM
Huh? It wasn't.

Oh, I saw the RIP message that was starred and assumed it was.

Hey @MattD :D Did you go to that game convention?

I did indeed attend Origins last week.

Have a good time?

I did. Didn't do as much as I'd hoped due to stress from work and the fact I'll be a dad at the end of August distracting me, but otherwise a good time was had.
Picked up two new games and a kit that's supposed to help you get a game idea to the table.

2:48 PM
@MattD WHEE!!! That's so exciting. :D
Oh, that sounds cool! I didn't realize you like to develop, too.

I've had an idea for a game for a while now, and figured a $30 kit designed to help with that could be a worthwhile purchase.
Played some of Academy Games' historical titles and picked up 1775: The American Revolution as a result.
Also got Viceroy and its playmat for $20. The game alone MSRPs for $35.

Oooh, nice!

Clerk mentioned they have a KS for an expansion to Viceroy hitting soon so I'm guessing the price was to get it in the hands of more people.

Good luck with that, and with parenthood :D We're adding another to ours in October. Not sure if you'd heard.

I think I remember you mentioning that.
Congrats! Know what you're having?

2:54 PM
Another boy. :D Makes things cheaper, at least. Less stuff to buy.

Gotcha. We're having a little girl.
2

@MattD Well, it was reborn in a better shape the same second.

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, I found the meta question about it.

Have you picked out a name yet?

We did, but I'm not wanting to type it in a publicly searchable space just yet.

3:02 PM
Shit, I forgot the John Goodman thing last night. Urgh! :'(

That's fair! I'm definitely one of the "I'm not going to tell you" camp because if you tell people, they often just argue with you and tell you how bad it is... once you have the kid, and it's stuck, they won't do that. :D

Actually everyone we've told has loved the name.

Sweet! That's so nice when you get that sort of support.

Like I literally do not know of a single person who's not liked it.

Oh, a baby? Congratulations then! \o/
2

3:03 PM
YAY!

Yeah, first name is from one of my wife's grandmothers, middle name is a shortened version of my wife's mother's maiden name, and she'll have my last name because I gotta get something. :P

Feel free to ping me in August if you come and introduce her. I'm usually pingable in here but I don't always read everything. I'm sure it will get tons of stars, though.

Gotcha, and maybe. There's part of me that's actually wanting to not post so much about her online.

Thanks to whoever is cleaning up the comments on my Mycoft answer.!

I've really come to dislike social media and the rampant "share everything" culture that's been built, and thus I'm not keen to the idea of sharing images and details about my daughter while she's young and can't really voice if she's fine with that or not.

3:05 PM
And that's definitely an option! A lot of people are avoiding publicizing their kids. :) I got started with Bennett in my avatar and now I fear that if I did anything else I'd scare people into thinking something awful had happened.

I'm actually deactivated on Facebook at the moment, have been for three months, so there's a ton of people I know who don't know I'm going to be a dad soon.

@Paulie_D Yeah, I already did part of it yesterday. I shouldn't have kept the Botswana thing in hindsight. But well, gone.

Gotcha. I'm absolutely in the "to each their own" category when it comes to such things, but given the way things have gone with social media in the last two years alone I'm just not as into the idea as I once was.
So Disney have upped their bid on Fox to $71.3 billion to counter Comcast's offer of $65 billion to buy Fox, which was a counter to Disney's original offer of $52.4 billion to buy Fox.

@NapoleonWilson I'm not worried specifically but it did seem to be edging to off-topic again. To be expected I suppose in these days of "social justice". I was tempted to flag it but you beat me to the punch.

Yeah, it was auto-flagged for too many comments already anyway.

3:12 PM
That's a lot of money floating around... and one huge company.

It's Disney's world, we're all just playing in it.

@Catija Yeah but there's a shipload of money to be made by the MouseMachine by owning Fox...even if they don't divest the stuff the don't need.

I'm not saying it's a bad call for them... my bigger concern is the slow reduction of the number of media sources that exist. It's kinda scary.

That and the fact the time frame for stuff entering public domain is coming up, so Disney's likely gonna pay out the ass to extend that shit even more.

Just think about the awesome Infinity War film with triple the character count and double the subplots! \o/

3:20 PM
But Sony has X-Men now, right? So buying Fox won't get them that... or does Sony just have the rights... I can't remember.

Oh, really?

@MattD Heaven help them if Mickey is public :P
Hmmm... that's what I'd been hearing but maybe I'm getting confused about something... I mean, Sony definitely had Spiderman but doesn't, apparently...

Fox has X-Men - Sony has the Spiderverse

If Disney buys Fox they should own all their Marvel properties except Spider-Man.
Sony is basically "lending" them the character because they occasionally have moments of lucidity and make smart decisions.

Q: Topic Challenge: John Goodman and his films/TV shows

Napoleon WilsonToday John Goodman turns 66 and can look back on an extensive career in film and television. So in honour of his life of acting and due to popular demand we're starting a new topic challenge. From 2018-06-20 00:00 UTC to 2018-07-01 23:00 UTC we're challenging you to all your great questions about...

@MattD And when they are insane and have one of those super dumb moments that everyone doesn't bat an eyelid to... they go and announce movies such as Aunt May standalone and more stuff...

Wut? o_O

3:58 PM
I have every expectation that Venom will be awful.

4:51 PM
@MetaReel OMFG!!!! I was just going to come in here and bug you about this, but you already did it!!! NO WAY!!!
@NapoleonWilson You are like the best thing...EVER!!! ;-*
Everybody is having babies up in here!!! How exciting!!!
Remind me not to drink the Kool-Aid. Hehehehe!

@steelersquirrel Woot! \o/
Why? I mean, it's true of course, but still.
@steelersquirrel Then you're definitely the second best thing. ;-P ;-*

But I am the first upvoter. @steelersquirrel

@steelersquirrel Why would you drink Kool-Aid? :'(
That's...really dangerous, you know?

@NapoleonWilson It's a figure of speech, silly! Like...I don't want to drink what Catija and Matt are since they are having babies ;)

That...sentence is even more confusing.

4:59 PM
Why?

You don't want to drink what they are? Huh?

It's.a.figure.of.speech.
I'm not literally drinking what they are.

Oh, I know you weren't actually going to drink Kool-Aid. You're not that irresponsible. ;-)

Is drinking kool-aid irresponsible?

But I still totally don't get what "drinking what they are" means here, not even figuratively.
@steelersquirrel A little maybe.
I feel like I'm totally wrong about what Kool-Aid actually is. Maybe I should check the dictionary. ;-)
Oh, apparently it's not coolant. Heh!

5:03 PM
Kool-Aid is a brand of flavored drink mix owned by Kraft Foods. The powder form was created by Edwin Perkins in 1927 based upon a liquid concentrate called Fruit Smack. == History == Kool-Aid was invented by Edwin Perkins in Hastings, Nebraska. All of his experiments took place in his mother's kitchen. Its predecessor was a liquid concentrate called Fruit Smack. To reduce shipping costs, in 1927, Perkins discovered a way to remove the liquid from Fruit Smack, leaving only a powder. This powder was named Kool-Aid. Perkins moved his production to Chicago in 1931 and Kool-Aid was sold to General...

@MattD Will do. And thanks.

@steelersquirrel Okay, I got that. Now back to how people are drinkable. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson It's basically following what others do. I believe the phrase derived from the Jonestown mass suicides. Like...everyone drank the poisonous kool aid and died. It's now used in a satirical sense of saying that I don't want to "drink the kool aid" because everyone is having babies i.e. drinking the kool aid.

@NapoleonWilson That is actually what the phrase "drinking the cool-aid" is about. :D
well not that. but using it mindlessly

@steelersquirrel Oh, so it was dangerous then. Hmpf, that's just confusing. :'(

5:07 PM
It's just a phrase that you use when you want to stay away from what others are doing. That's all.

Okay, I think I'm following so far. But how does "drinking what they are" figure into it?

Apparently it is totally confusing you. I should have just said "Wow, everyone seems to be having babies. I'm using birth control so that I won't have any" I should have just been all literal about it rather than using a figure of speech ;)
@NapoleonWilson It just means following what they do.

Oh, so it's a another figure of speech then?

Drinking the kool aid = doing what everyone else is doing.
That's the figure of speech or saying or whatever for following what everyone else is doing.

Oh, wait a second, I think I got it now. "drinking what they are" actually means "drinking what they are drinking", not "drinking what they are" (in the sense of being something). I think that's where I had my problem.
Got it now. Woot! \o/

5:11 PM
Oh my. Wow.
Glad that you got it!! ;)

Awww, me too! Yay for understanding!
@steelersquirrel Thanks for your patience and not giving up! ;-*

would someone with 300+ rep mind creating a new tag for Safe?

Should it be or now?

5:19 PM
the 2nd one :)

You...first have to ask the question, though. Tags can only exist if they have questions asked about them.

hm.. any proposal what tag to use for it?

Just use something generic like plot-explanation and it can be fixed.

Depends on the question. There are some broad tags independent of the work. But that depends if it's a question asking for a , deeper of the themes, background on s, the used to accomplish something,...

yeah
just did that

Done!

would you mind editing it in?
cool, thanks a lot

@NapoleonWilson Of course! I would have given up a long time ago if I didn't have patience ;)

@steelersquirrel I was afraid you would. So I'm super glad you pulled it through. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson Wuuuut? Awwwwww. You know that 99.9% of the time that I am totally playing with you when I am "losing my patience" ;)
I was NEVER seriously annoyed just now when you didn't understand. I was just playing around with you. Awwwwww. It makes me feel bad that you think that I would actually get so annoyed so quickly or something. I thought that you knew me better than that :'(

Why is this under a spoiler? We only follow spoiler in titles. — Nog Shine 5 mins ago
@TomK. Why did you use spoiler tags?

He's also a new user and may have simply been unaware of that rule.
Oh, he's been here two years. Okay, well, he's a low rep user and may not have known! :D

5:52 PM
lol
I thought the thing is spolier-y

It's also less of a rule and more of a guideline, as long as the spoiler blocks aren't excessive. ;-)

it had passcode. It's definitely spoilery and secret. ;)

Man, two or three times today a post has made me want to throw in a movie gif. SE really should add gif search and post to chat.

Meh. Some chatrooms had bots that could throw GIFs at you, with...foreseeable consequences.
If people want to spam GIFs, at least have them work for it. ;-)
Then the GIFs that do get posted, do so with dedication.

Q: Why would it be dangerous for a host to reach The Forge and get all the guest data?

BrettFromLAIn HBO's Westworld S2E9, Bernard says that in addition to The Cradle, which contains all the hosts' personalities, there is a digital repository called The Forge which contains all the guests' personalities. 6:37 PM
@MattD @MattD I was simply unaware of the spoiler rules/guidelines.
I have to say, I never quite understood them.
Everything that seems "hideworthy" to me is put into spoiler tags

It's all good man. I don't think anyone's legit upset about it. Mainly just razzing you. :P

I'm not feeling bad, don't worry ;)
just wanted to maybe help your "new user experience" out :P

Gotcha. Feedback is always welcome.
The general rule is to avoid spoilers in titles because those aren't as easily avoidable.
As for the content of the actual question? Usually not needed there.
If it's for a movie or show you haven't seen, it should be super obvious that you probably shouldn't be reading the question if you're concerned about spoilers.

Q: Movie ending with woman watching for nuke test from space station

EricI watched a science fiction movie 20 to 25 years ago. It was very prescient on tech with people using tablet computers, etc. One of the main character develops some kind of super sight and was used as an observer for nuclear tests from a space station. I think David Byrne was involved in the m...

Just wanted to ask the mods why my last flag was declined?
You still deleted the answer so I don't know why was it declined then

@Plexus I'm not a Movies.SE mod, but what flag did you raise?
Also, there should be an explanation for why it was declined in your flag history - it should say "declined - <reason>"

9:37 PM
@Plexus It was declined because there wasn't really a need to involve the moderators in this. You could have just deleted your answer yourself.
The decline reason should say something like "flags should only be used to make moderators aware of content that requires their intervention". While I did delete the answer, I still declined the flag with that reason as a learning experience as that is the standard reason to decline flags with that shouldn't have been issued.

10:05 PM
... and the side effect there is that, since a mod deleted it, you can't ever undelete it @Plexus If you'd deleted it yourself, you could edit it and undelete it whenever you wish.

Q: Stealing bad guy gun move - The Equalizer

Reginald KincaidIn the movie The Equalizer (2014) the protagonist manages to steal the gun a bad guy is pointing at him with a cool sleight of hand. Does this move make any sense (is it a known technique?) or in real life it will probably result in the death of the protagonist?

@NapoleonWilson well it was the only flag option I could raise, if there was "Not an answer" I would raise it, but there was only the mod one

There is a "delete" button, though. There doesn't seem to be a need for any flag if you just wanted to delete a -3 answer.

@Catija @NapoleonWilson I made a mistake making it an answer, when it was a comment. So I know there is an option to flag it as "Not an answer" and that "answer" becomes a comment if it was commentary. That's why I wanted to raise the flag so the answer is converted to comment.
But that option was not there so I did what was available -> mod flag.

I wasn't really keen on converting it to a comment, though. You yourself said it would have looked odd as a comment (and I'm not sure it would even have added anything anyway). But if you just wanted to make your answer a comment, delete the answer and post a comment. There's not really any more magic to it.
But don't worry about it. Your mistake got rectified and it's deleted now.

Ok, glad we sorted it out.
