3:00 AM
@Catija OUW, now I got it!

@NapoleonWilson Glad to help.

vzn
whats going to be on fox news?

@vzn Patricia Arquette's speech about equal pay for women.

@vzn I guess that equal women wages thing, as much as I understood.

@NapoleonWilson It is.

3:04 AM
Hmmm, this one is tough. I want Guardians of the Galaxy

Aww, melting away at the organ soundtrack, be it just for a second.

But that was expected.

got the special effects category

Yeah, give it to the practical effects guys!

Well, they also used input from physicists to craft the most accurate black hole for film.

vzn
3:05 AM
yeah there are some cool wired articles on that. looked it up for physics chat room.
in fact there may have been a published paper iirc.

I hope they're doing those score sessions for all the nominees, though they haven't done one yet, maybe they'll just put all 5 together.

Dirty Dancing theme?

@vzn Still waiting for that paper he promised for the computer graphics community. Hope I can have student present that thing in the seminar. ;-)

Feast. It's Disney.

My friend is pissed Apes didn't win.

vzn
3:07 AM
nap what seminar?

A Single Life was awesome, though

I kinda feel bad when Disney gets pulled into this category. It's like it's not even fair.

@vzn computer graphics seminar at my university.

vzn
cool. what do you guys cover? like raytracing etc? let me paste in those articles some might like

@MattD Yeah. It's totally unfair.

Action movie giants.

vzn
ah! not sure what you are referring to but did find the/ a paper! ...

She's so gorgeous... and I love her.

I have Big Hero Six in this category.

Haha, already read all those Wired articles. Sucked up everything about this movie in the 2 weeks after having seen it two times. As well as all the 50 questions here.

3:10 AM
Dwayne Johnson has surprised me. Going from WWE to being an actor, he transitioned really well.

vzn
hardcore man. try this, seen it? seems to be close to what you want

Big Hero 6 was great. I feel bad about missing the two

Anyone else pissed off they didn't show clips from the animated movies when they announced them?

@MattD Yeah. Trying to save time, I guess?

@vzn Thanks, will have a look at it.

3:12 AM
For some reason he reminds me of an older version of Wil Wheaton.

vzn
dwayne johnson, like his roles, indeed impressive, reminds me some of stallone yrs ago

@vzn God I hope Johnson doesn't go the way of Stallone.

vzn
lol what way did stallone go?
not actually a big stallone fan myself.

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG!

The way of the Expendables?

3:13 AM
Haven't seen Big Hero 6. May colleague was quite pumped for it, but I never was a big animation enthusiast, can watch that on TV some day.

@NapoleonWilson I'm glad it won, especially since LEGO got snubbed. If Dragon 2 won I was going to be pissed at the whole category

Hmm, what actually was the last thing Johnson did, I think it was some time ago.

Love how they're advertising the Galaxy S5 when the S6 is due out soon.

vzn
really like the science/ robotics angle in big hero 6, lots of robotics stuff in theatres lately, highly recommend spare parts

True story: Saw that there was activity on the actual site... thought, oooh, someone's actually still paying attention... nope. Community.

3:15 AM
@NapoleonWilson He was in Hercules last year....

vzn
Wayne Johnson seems pretty busy usually. maybe not quite as much lately.

And Fast and Furious 6 in 2013.

@MattD Right, that was pretty enjoyable, if nothing more than that. But a classic The Rock role.

Snitch was in 2013, really liked him in that.
@NapoleonWilson G.I. Joe: Retaliation? :P

I guess he was in 5 movies in 2013 but only one in 2014, so that is a bit of a downturn.

3:17 AM
@Catija Eh, dude doesn't need films to float.

I still think Walking Tall is way underrated, love that thing for some reason.

vzn
1 big movie a year a "downturn" lol
hercules had big budget.
5 movies a year totally unsustainable anyway...

So basically fuck you Sony hackers.

Ah, the irony of them finally having a non-white, female head of the academy and yet one of the worst years recently for non-white people and women.
2

vzn
spking of women/ sony/ hackers how about ceo fired? ouch/ killer
hollywood, one of the last places ever for "affirmative action"...

3:21 AM
It's got to be Grand Budapest Hotel. The design was impeccable.

Grand Budapest for Production Design.

Aw, those robots alone are worth an award. But I guess it's Grand Budapest Hotel again.

@Catija Yeah, made you feel the fake country was real.

vzn
unless you count precious lol.. star there recently said she was "blacklisted"
robots in what?

@vzn Interstellar of course!

3:23 AM
The assistant robots in Interstellar were great.

vzn
robots in interstellar? wow maybe gotta go see it now ha

I have Birdman for Cinematography.

Oh that category is made for stuff like Birdman, I guess.

@NapoleonWilson Yep.
He won the Cinematography category last year for Gravity. Might that be the first back-to-back pull for this award?

Who's doing the announcer VO for this? It's a bit saccharine.

3:27 AM
@MattD Oh didn't know. I guess cinematographers belong to those guys nobody really knows, like screenwriters or all those costume/production designers.

Yeah, buddy of mine pointed it out.

3 time already? And 20 times nomineee, I guess.

Q: Why was The Lego Movie not nominated at the Oscars?

TivepGiven that The Lego Movie displayed a new style of animation, was there any specific technical reason why it was not nominated in the category of "Best Animated Feature Film" at the 87th Academy Awards I'm not looking for a general opinion on if the movie was good enough or not. I am more curiou...

@MovieReel Nice question actually, challenge is starting early this time.

The pastel/watercolor art is really nice.
Heart breaks

3:36 AM
Quite some surprises, James Garner, Tuco, Bob Hoskins. Just saw James Rebhorn in Scent of a Woman, one of the all-time supporting-rolers.

Bob Hoskins was one of my favorites. So sad to lose him.

Ahhhh, nothing like the older members of my family wishing Billy Crystal was hosting over NPH. I like Crystal, but he doesn't play to the generation these shows go for nowadays.

vzn
pitbull did a new (music) video "fireball" that refs "who framed roger rabbit"... :)

@MattD Well, they tried to reach the younger generation with Franco/Hathaway in the past and it didn't really play out (though, they beat Chris Rock anytime). But sure, Billy Crystal is just a safe bet.

vzn
wow there were a lot of hathaway haters...

3:39 AM
@NapoleonWilson Ugh, the Franco Hathaway year was horrible. Talk about something that should have worked and it just crashed and burned.

Wait, who hates Anne Hathaway? She's awesome.
2

Oh, she's just cute, gotta love her.

I like Hathaway, but when she and Franco hosted it was a disaster.

vzn
like her in the movies but saw articles at the time, maybe she got to be too successful for some (overexposed?) & didnt she recently get married?
theres always internet haters for something...

So at this point I'm just wondering if I'll have enough time to watch Walking Dead before going to bed.

3:43 AM
@MattD Oh, totally forgot that this is continuing already. Well, sometihng to do at my free day tomorrow today.

vzn
hathway on the haterz / huffpost (other articles there too)

Boyhood for Editing.

She got married in 2012.
Boyhood has to win. My friend is going to go crazy, Sandra Adair is her mom.
WTF.

Wow.

Editing's something I can't really judge at all.
Well, at least in Birdman there isn't really much to edit.

3:45 AM
That's disappointing.

Friend of mine brings up a good point: could Birdman and Boyhood be splitting the vote too evenly and canceling one another out?

I liked Terrence as Rhodey better than Don Cheadle.

What was wrong with Howard. Was the teleprompter broken? Can't tell he was really breathless just because of The Imitation Game.

Stage fright? Maybe he was panting because he got rushed onto stage?

Oscars!
Just me or NPH sucking tonight?

3:50 AM
Maybe he's not singing enough.

He hasn't really shined lately, yeah. But the intro was amazing, as well as the Birdman thing.

Have you guys seen The Grand Budapest Hotel? Winning lots of awards, I haven't seen it yet

@Maximilian I've watched it some days ago, quite fun.

Ill have to watch it then:P
I saw Birdman and Whiplash, I can't decide which I liked more, both were amazing

The intro was great.

3:52 AM
I watched it the weekend came out. Loved it.

@Maximilian Welcome by the way, and be sure to take the poll: docs.google.com/forms/d/…

Wow, that was low hanging fruit.

Woo hoo! Got the Outspoken badge!

lol thanks

@Catija Oh, love bad word jokes.

3:54 AM
Yeah, I do too... but that was a bit far.
Did you guys see the Samsung commercial?

I voted:P

Maybe I have a dirty mind, but the stylus that comes with that phone looks like an unrolled condom.

lol

Apparently I killed the chat.

Not a big rap fan, but that's a nice song, my favourite for now. But this guy's arm definitely has to ache already.

4:00 AM
Im still here

Nah, it's 11PM where I'm at so i'm sort of fading.

I loved The Lego Movie but I thought it was terrible at the Oscars lol

5:00 am here, but I'm quite awake still, and glad there's still quite a bit to go.

Its 8:02 pm here

okay yeah, wow, if glory doesn't win best song, and lego movie does, that's going to be huge talk tomorrow

4:03 AM
Nice... John Travolta reamed.

Yeah, Travolta pun, that gotta be! And right before Adele Dazeem herself, amazing!

They should have Cumberbatch say Penguin on stage:D

Wow, what a perfect pairing.
Whoever had that idea should get a raise.
Does he say it oddly?

Still got to see Selma, but I think it isn't even out here already.
@Farooq Welcome!

user116848
@NapoleonWilson Hi!

user116848
And hi all.

hi!

Well that speech is going to be all over Fox News tomorrow.

vzn
max what do you mean you think "lego movie terrible at oscars"?
mattd you seem preoccupied with faux foxnews

When they sang Everything Is Awesome
I didnt like it that much

4:10 AM
They'll have to cut around the mentions of god somehow. If they leave it in, someone might disagree with them.
@Maximilian Oh, I think it was off because they're using the orchestra instead of the instrumentation from the film.

ya probably.

@vzn Because I hate them and I like calling out things I know they'll single out the next day because they're horrible.

vzn
conservatives hate hollywood. they are probably rejoicing in their pews over american sniper...

And I'm still waiting for that session for all the score nominees, to hell with them if the just sprinkle in some 3 seconds for each nomination.
I'm not sure if NPH is aiming for some kind of meta humour, but really guy, it doesn't work so well.

lol ya, NPH is terrible right now

4:14 AM
Ugh, Sound of Music, such a classic.

Don't know that at all, some kind of total US thing, I guess.

He's usually so awesome on the Tonys. I think Hugh Jackman should come.

@NapoleonWilson You've not seen The Sound of Music?

@MattD Uh, I guess, now I have at least seen parts of it?

Love the Sound of Music.

4:16 AM
@NapoleonWilson You really should see the whole thing. But yeah, I can see it sort of being an, "American thing."
Sound of Music is easily one of the biggest classic films in the US. I don't know of anyone who says they hate it outright.

Why so much songs

But hey, Lady Gaga can actually look normal? Makes her even more awesome! Terrificly diverse artist.

It's shown on TV every year still, and I still feel it should be shown with absolutely no commercials. It's not a film that should be profited from.

I didn't realize she can actually sing.

lmfao

4:18 AM
Oh yeah, Lady Gaga is actually incredibly talented with music. She was accepted to Juliard afterall.

Wow, really Lady Gaga?

Now that is a performance I'd call anything but Lady Gaga. Amazing!

ya, its good!

Amazing performance! She should sing more like this.

I love Julie Andrews. She's one of the most amazing people.

4:22 AM
Aw, now get Zimmer this gold guy already.

@NapoleonWilson If you liked that, seriously seek out The Sound of Music and watch it from start to finish. It's long, but it's so, so good.
I have Zimmer in this, but I honestly kinda want to see Desplat win.

Did you hear, she said Budapesht... so cute.

And they didn't do a special score performance, crap!

The Imitation game was great.

@MattD For me it's the other way around, actually. Wanna have Zimmer, but I fear Desplat.

4:23 AM
WOW WOW WOW

Aw, I knew it, now the day is ruined, best and most original Zimmer work ever!

HOLY SHIT WOW

And by that I meant the music was great.

Now they just gotta snub Nightcrawler's screenplay.

Seriously, GBH is the wild card tonight that can fuck up so many movie's shit.

4:26 AM
Nightcrawler was amazing

@MattD Not sure if that was so much of a wild card, though, seemed like a clear Oscar favourite all the time to me.
But sure, rather Grand Budapest Hotel than Boyhood. ;-P

@NapoleonWilson To me it's a movie that's good, but doesn't seem to be a clear frontrunner in many of the categories it's in.

@Maximilian For sure. and Gyllenhaal's missing nomination a scandal.

Do you guys thing The Grand Budapest Hotel will win best picture since its winning all these awards?
I want Birdman to win

@Maximilian Likely not, unless the votes for Birdman and Boyhood were mad split.

4:29 AM
I'm not sure, I'd still rather guess (and want) Birdman, I think.

GBH has just been winning artistry awards, which is Anderson's wheelhouse. They're low-hanging fruit for him.

and NPH strange joke again

I have Birdman for Original Screenplay.

Boyhood.

Hard competition, but I still have hopes for this movie....Aw, scratch that, no luck for Nightcrawler either. ;-(

4:31 AM
what just happened?
My TV cut off:/

Birdman won.

Birdman won original screenplay.

Awesome!

What, Opra was nominated once? Was that for The Butler (which I sadly haven't seen yet at all)?

Adapted Screenplay I have The Imitation Game.

4:34 AM
Hard to judge, don't really know.

Did you guys see Inherent Vice?

@NapoleonWilson No, was a Supporting Actress nod for her role in The Color Purple.

That was ages ago.
He's so cute and young.

@MattD Oh, now that's a long time ago, didn't know she was acting that early already. (But haven't seen that one either yet).
@Maximilian I might plan, sounds spretty interesting. But I don't know when that actually comes here or if it already did.

I haven't seen Inherent Vice.

4:37 AM
I saw it, I liked it, but left confused a bit:P

Oh, that was the one I told my husband I wouldn't watch.

Uh, wait, did we already have Supporting Actor. Am I that forgettable or does the Academy staff update Wikipedia life?

Lol

Supporting Actor was at the beginning. Ethan Hawke, right?

@NapoleonWilson That was the first award of the night....
@Catija No, J.K. Simmons won.

4:39 AM
OH yeah. that's right. My stupid head.

@MattD Oh ok, then that was that crappy 20 minute technical difficulties thing.

Paul Thomas Anderson movies are slightly less interesting to me than Wes Anderson.

@Catija Or Paul W.S. Anderson?

LMFAO
Ok the Gone Girl joke I thought was kinda funny

@NapoleonWilson Who?

4:41 AM
Director I have Linklater.

Birdman!

hard to guess

I think Linklater... the novelty deserves it.

@Catija Uh, I only say Resident Evil 1-376.

I didnt see Foxcatcher but I really want to, It only played in 2 theaters here and not close:/
BIRDMAN
I called it

4:42 AM
Well then.

lol

Ah, that's definitely a director's movie. Technically that thing was just perfect.

@NapoleonWilson Ah, I actually like the Resident Evil movies.
... but that's probably because I love Jovovich.

What is he talking about :/

lol
Theaters NEED to play all of these movies next weekend

4:45 AM
@Catija Oh, and Mortal Kombat, AVP and Death Race. Though, I love Mortal Kombat.

Ben Affleck should have worn the batman suit

Did Keaton wear the birdman suit?

Hmm, The Judge is sometihng I missed, too. But I actually like courtroom stuff.

I saw it, it wasn't as good as I was expecting

Well that was a shitty McDonald's commercial.
Keaton for Best Actor.

4:48 AM
Someone just texted me about that? what was it
Michael Keaton!

Yeah, sure, Keaton. Only saw Cumberbatch otherwise anyway, but he was good, too.

Aww

Well alrighty then.

I saw the movie but didnt like it that much

WUT? Well, "you never go full retard!"
Can't we just cancel this one with Jupiter Ascending?

4:52 AM
LMFAO
It was so bad

@NapoleonWilson Except he didn't go full retard....
Or even half retard.

Yeah, I know, haven't seen it anyway. Wasn't meant too serious. I know if there's anything Hawking still has, it's his mind.

@NapoleonWilson That movie was such a joke... from what I've heard, anyway.

Wow. That beard.

MATT! My fellow Austinite.
And UT grad.
We're practically the same person.

4:54 AM
LMFAO
Eddie Redmayne is, like, gonna fuck that Oscar.

I hated how all the people bitched about his speech last year (McConaughey, that is). I found it was great and very original compared to all that canned thank you stuff.

I have Rosamund Pike in this category.

I hope she wins

@MattD The only one I saw anyway.

@NapoleonWilson She's the bitch you love to hate in that movie.

4:57 AM
OMG!!! Good for her. She's amazing.

:/ Boo

Man, I am not winning on any of the big categories tonight.

She was my pick on the poll.

Oh wow, he does look a lot like Matt Damon.

LMAO they put the camera on all of the actresses, they're all like "I HATE HER!"

5:02 AM
Ha. Wow. This is hilarious.

This is magic.

This is all a lie!
It was changed from the bottom!
Birdman better win

Boyhood.

Definitely Interstellar Birdman.

Whomever made these title cards should make movie posters. For real.

5:04 AM
They've all been beautiful.
NOOOOOOOOO

YAAAA!!!!!

Wow. Boyhood basically totally snubbed.

Wow, they got ... just Supporting actress?
Nice... "Two Mexicans in a row, that's suspicious."

And what was with that Green card line from Penn? Was this just a totally inappropriate joke I didn't get?

5:07 AM
No clue...

Its all inappropriate tonight

@NapoleonWilson Immigration is a huge topic in the US right now, especially illegal immigration from Mexico. It also happens that this has been a big night for the Hispanic community given how many people of Hispanic descent won awards tonight. Off color a bit, but not meant to be mean.

Hmm, no Zimmer, no Nightcrawler, no special sountrack performance, a great and surprising Lady Gaga and a Neil Patrick Harris that wasn't really bad but also not memorable at all and stayed quite, well, pale afterall. Not a disaster, but also not a show to remember that much, I guess.

@Catija There's your Top Gun again.

My Top Gun? I didn't say that earlier... I pointed out Dirty Dancing.
Moon River.

5:11 AM
Oh, thought you did. My bad.

What did you guys think about Patricia Arquette's equality speech?

@Maximilian Loved it.

@MattD I was the one who pointed out Berlin's amazing Take My Breath Away. Love that song, but ok, I love anything 80s.
Thanks for reminding me, listening to that right now ;-)

Well, thanks all for coming to chat.

Welcome

5:19 AM
But a nice chat event. Achieved to drag some non-regulars in and personally it was a nice addendum to the usual all-alone early morning TV session.
But Kelly McGillis was really beautiful!

You think this guy at Slate wrote a celebratory article on the chance it won, too? slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/02/23/…

@Catija Meh, drenched in subjectivity of course. Just happens, get over it (not you, the author of course).
But wait, do you say Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. were nominated for Best Picture and there isn't a place for Interstellar? Bah, as much as I don't share Wolfgang Schmitt's negative attitude towards the Oscars, I got to somehow agree with him about the self-imposed pseudo-pretense. You're not going to nominate really groundbreaking indie-films anyway, so where's the good old Hollywood cinema?

5:37 AM
@NapoleonWilson Of course... The Academy has a history of awarding good films and bad... and some years there's more depth of quality. If this had been nominated next to Gladiator, it would have certainly won... but there was a ton of quality films to choose from.

Well sure, the Academy just goes wild over biopic stuff like Imitation Game and Theory of Everything, what am I complaining about.
@NapoleonWilson You could at least complain about the artificial limitation to 8 nominees. But ok, let's face it, Interstellar just wouldn't have fit to all those (supposedly!) deep movies anyway, so that might be the reason for just 8 nominees in the first place. Meh, at least I liked Birdman and it was a technical masterpiece afterall, rather that than 12 Years a Boy.

Q: What's the name of the film where villians are eating sushi off a naked woman?

DaveAll I can remember is that at some point in the filmm, there is a scene where the villian/villians are eating sushi off a naked woman, then some ass gets kicked by the hero. Any ideas?

@Catija yes

@AnkitSharma Ah! Cool. Just wondering if you can advise me on what to do about the answer on the Lego Movie question. Should the answer be added to the question somehow?

@Catija i don't think so
Answer is still valid
As it it

Ah, ok. I guess I just am not clear on the difference between valid and correct.

@Catija Sometimes valid point should be kept to guide the further answers
Take this question as an example

Q: Does Iron Man 3 have any other Avengers in it?

tcbcwAre any of the other Avengers going to be in Iron Man 3? Or is he flying solo?

Where top answer is valid but incorrect after movie release
So this kind of answer are good for future use
@Catija maybe my comment made it downvotable but i think it provide a good point and doesn't deserve downvote

That makes sense :) Thanks

Why did everyone want Big hero 6 to win? ..Both the Box trolls and How to train Your Dragon 2 were better movies!

I loved How to Train Your Dragon but the sequel was disappointing to me. Didn't see Boxtrolls.

@Catija Ah... that was my vote: very funny movie. Also very visually beautiful... the 24fpx claymation with the camera movment was stunning and really effective.

5:16 PM
Anyone here felt speechless after watching the Red Wedding episode on GoT.

@MattD The problem is though, that probably every one has just seen a single version either, so comparisons are quite hard to do.
Interesting, though, that they really made this R in the US, seeing how much they chase PG-13 nowadays and how this movie seemed to target youth audiences anyway.

6:01 PM
@NapoleonWilson I thought it interesting as well, but then again Vaughn pretty much went for a hard R rating with Kick-Ass, but then again that film likely wouldn't have been as good had they gone for a PG-13 rating.
Kingsman got there by virtue of the amount of "fucks" it literally gave in the dialog, coupled with the, ahem, ending scene....

However I recently watched the original Journey to the Center of the Earth with James Mason again and was delighted to find the same scene is used here were he too and his par...
