Q: Questions about reviews and reviewers

iandotkellyWould a questions asking for suggestions for good online blogs or podcasts where movies are reviewed be on-topic? There are some questions like this on Stackoverflow, e.g. 'single most influential book every programmer should read'

Q: How do we promote our site (when it goes public beta)?

AlonzoI figured I would push this question out there to get the ball rolling (Early bird gets the worm no?). I think extended discussion of promotion should be in the chatroom http://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1888/movies, it is alot easier than refreshing this meta page and then come here when we ha...

Oy.
I'm just going to leave this here.
in The Overlook Hotel, Jan 4 at 23:36, by Jeff Atwood
the issue with feed-as-messages is it tends to overwhelm the room. The overlay is much .. friendlier
Mainly just because I've seen the wisdom of leaving "wall-of-questions" for the main site so the chat room can stay "discussions between people".

@mootinator I don't know why @phwd set a feed for meta questions but not for main site questions
But it's not as if there were any “discussions between people” going on

Well, when there are, the feeds make it difficult for anyone to find them.

@mootinator There hasn't been a single discussion between users of the site since the room started
I can remove the feeds, if you want
let me clarify this: I have the technical ability, and will do it if I think it's a good idea

I just think that if, for instance, someone new comes to chat and sees even a vaguely interesting conversation in the log, they may stick around or try to come back.

for that to happen, we'd have to start discussing movies

If they see an RSS feed of questions, they aren't seeing anything not already on the main site, so there's no point coming back.
Well, we're in private beta still.

Gilles has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

I expect the meta to tone down eventuallly.

The meta questions will now be in overlays
And I've added a feed for the main site questions, in overlays too

Awesome.

@mootinator OTOH, if they see no activity at all, they won't stick in a dead room
Having posts with the questions tends to trigger discussion about these questions

sec...
Inline feeds are a good idea on busy rooms to incite discussion.
We should just make sure the room is actually busy first.
I just don't think it's a useful way to drive traffic into the chat.

@mootinator I'm unconvinced. The feeds at least make the room appear not dead
> The last message was posted 8 days ago
^^^ this doesn't make people stay on
OTOH when the room is busy the feeds are a distraction

But neither do feed posts. really.
Feed posts with no feedback are just a non-searchable main page.
Better to know nobody has actually spoken for 8 days than to have to add up the 7, 8, 13 hour intervals between feed posts to find out.
Anyhow. I don't really feel stringly about it.

For a view from a low-traffic site (Cryptography): I like to have the feed in the chat to get notified about new questions (with the "bing" I configured to occur on every chat message for me) without having to reload the main page. Of course I could have the same thing in a RSS feed reader.
We have an one-digit number of new questions each day, so this stays manageable. I don't know about your traffic, though.
