lol
Regarding the voting guidelines: I don't really see the point of any of these
Except for maybe the first
But even that should be obvious enough imo
As for rule 2, I don't think it's needed to tell people to not vote on posts which break the rules
Such posts can just be disqualified imo
And as far as rule 3 goes, I don't think it really says anything. IMO it doesn't make anything less subjective, in fact IMO nothing could be much more subjective than "good" composition and "solid" design. People should just vote for what they like. The number of votes should say enough about what design is "solid" and well composed.
Also, are downvotes allowed?

1:11 AM
If they aren't, perhaps add a notice that only upvotes will be counted

@iKlsR the event on the homepage redirects to this room..?
@gandalf3 People give technically sound artwork up votes because they are impressed, which may defy the point. The third point was simply to remind people what makes a good image.... It makes it a bit more analytical then just saying "hmm I think this one look better."

What makes a good image?
It's subjective, everyone is going to have their own opinion.
For me, a good image is one that makes me go "WOW"
It may or may not have "good" use of color or some people's opinions, but does that make it a "bad" image?

Yes, but it is nearly impossible to makes an image that clicks for everyone.

Maybe it does for them, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't vote for it just because others say it has poor use of color.

You can still vote by your own standards...

1:23 AM
^^ exactly
What I'm trying to say, is I don't think those rules really end up doing anything
Everyone is going to vote by their own standards anyway, and that's the way it should be.

I provided tips to make people analyze, not go on impulse.

(IMO of course :P)

They are guidelines.

@GiantCowFilms Hm.. Is this meant to be a popularity contest or a technical contest?

Just read a blender guru competitions comments, then you'll realize how much guidance some people want when it comes to judging.
@gandalf3 More of an art contest.
A technically sound work that has no artistic merit is pointless in my mind.

1:26 AM
@GiantCowFilms hrm.. Maybe you could say something like "vote for the image that makes you go 'WOW'."? :P

@gandalf3 That is encouraging impulse voting. When given criteria, even vague ones people think harder

What's wrong with impulse voting?

@gandalf3 After all that work...... No expectation of something better?

?

Impulse voting is a very low standard. If art galleries were filled on the public's impulses you would see nothing but anime fan art :/.

1:29 AM
Technicalities like composition are based around making an image pleasing to look at. More than likely many impulse votes will be aimed at pleasing images which are pleasing because the artists spent a lot of time on composition :P
brb

Not always...
But maybe, I just put them there as a message that says think!
anecdote time:
Near(ish) to where I live, a clam chowder tasting festival is held. The public is unleashed on restaurants and they get to test chowder... They all vote and the best shop gets an award and more business. Without fail, the chowder restaurants at the begging of the walk win. Why? food tastes better when your hungry. Now if there where a guide for voting... a set of criteria if vague ones, like texture, size of chunks, originality smell etc. It would have made the people think about it harder...
I didn't think about the texture of the chowder when I participated... maybe it would have made my opinion better and more educated.
Also, imagine if people voted for politicians based on impulses... wait! wasn't Arnold Schwarzenegger once a governor Yikes!
If you want to get rid of the voting guide, you can, I won't revert it, I'm just sharing my opinion.

@GiantCowFilms yes

Could you post a link to the meta here?
Also, when voting begins, move the link to meta.

@GiantCowFilms Check the sidebar

1:46 AM
I think you could add the link to the description (Suzanize it! Challenge #1)... That is where I looked.

1:59 AM
@GiantCowFilms Well, it's true that the first entries listed will always have an advantage
I'm not sure the voting criteria will really help nullify that advantage though

Yes, this tries to fight that kind of voting.
@gandalf3 True, I was trying to make a point about impulse voting.
@gandalf3 I changed it... a bit.

I like it better now

Okay :)

Thanks :)
Too bad SE doesn't allow answers to be randomly sorted
That's the only way I can think of to nullify the "first entry" advantage..

After thought: Also a reminder to the artists to pay attention to composition and color... (It is way to easy to forget)
@gandalf3 It would be great if voting could only open after the deadline.

2:11 AM
Even then, the posts would be on chronological order..

@gandalf3 No, it voted order.. right?
It we could do a java script injection...

In case of a tie in score, SE sorts by time posted

@gandalf3 I see.
How should we break a tie...? @someonewithpc

@GiantCowFilms Just let them both win?

I personally think that the poster should choose.

2:13 AM
BTW, is this 1 entry per person?

@gandalf3 I'm very opposed to that for some illogical reason...
@gandalf3 Oh yes... I should add that to the rules.!
It seems logical, since it encourages more work on one piece, and therefor higher quality and more ambitious work.

@GiantCowFilms Why? I get the sense this is just a little friendly contest, the winner isn't too important..

@gandalf3 It is illogical

:P
Have another contest?

I have a pet peeve about the "Everyone Can Win" mentality....

2:16 AM
BTW, and opinions on downvotes?

@gandalf3 opinions after voting... down votes should be reserved for cheaters or people who put 0 effort into their entry.
Also, I think edits should be allowed right up to the last second. @iKlsR?

hm..
IMO edits are fine

Also, I think we should stop editing the rules soon, someone may get cross.

IMO you can downvote all you want, but they shouldn't count towards the winning tally

@gandalf3 Yes! ...It may influence people a bit, but there isn't anything we can do about it.

2:20 AM
Too much incentive to downvote the competition :P
I assume you can vote on as many entries as you want?
(as we don't really have a way to control that)

Yes...
I personally think that the poster should choose. - What is your opinion... They can still enter, but shouldn't chose their own entry in case of a tie.

?

@GiantCowFilms ?
Choose what?

The winner.
In case of a tie

2:27 AM
hm
Up to the OP, I guess
@someonewithpc What is the point of the 5 days of editing rule?

Food for thought proposed change to the rules @iKlsR @someonewithpc @gandalf3 @stacker @vader @David (I apologize if I missed someone):
Winner is chosen by poster if there is a tie.
Only up votes count towards total.
5 day editing rule killed.
@gandalf3 That was @iKlsR.

@GiantCowFilms Updated rules

@gandalf3 I think that others may want to have a say first... that is why I sent that message to everyone. We cant keep changing the rules...

oh
reverts edits

Thats okay... leave them there!
We can wait for somebody to kick up a fuss if they want to...
Better change them now than later.

2:38 AM
@GiantCowFilms @gandalf3 To prevent people from spamming edits or copying others ideas etc. Also, in any other competition, you get ONE entry.

I think someone reverted some of your changes @iKlsR...?
Wait no... I've just confused myself!

@GiantCowFilms Oops.. reverts reverting the reverted edits

Sigh, I wash my hands clean of this. I have exams anyway, it's up to you guys now.

@gandalf3 No....

no?

2:41 AM
@gandalf3 Oh good point.
I'm going to fast

??

Ok, here's the deal. One person makes the edits, share your opinions here.

@iKlsR Bingo!
Who is it: you? @someonewithpc? me? @gandalf3?

Can we at least spell "Suzanne" correctly?

@gandalf3 can do it.

2:42 AM
@gandalf3 Okay that makes sense since he is always here.

Okay (If no one else objects, I don't mind)

@gandalf3 I edited it for spelling, no idea who changed it back. I see like 10 edits after I fixed it.

@iKlsR I only added.
@iKlsR Why did you add the five day thing?

7 mins ago, by iKlsR
@GiantCowFilms @gandalf3 To prevent people from spamming edits or copying others ideas etc. Also, in any other competition, you get ONE entry.

in The Renderfarm, 4 hours ago, by iKlsR
It will prevent people from copying or stealing ideas

2:45 AM
I see.

You know what.

Will you allow small fixes for disorganized people like me...

It should be limited to ONE entry.

Not sure if it will really do that if someone is determined to go around stealing ideas though.

@iKlsR I added that

2:46 AM
@GiantCowFilms I did! o.O

@gandalf3 Oh!

lol

Because once the voting starts, someone might change something and it won't necessarily be what someone would vote for if you get what I mean.

I'm very disorganized

Well, someone did :P
@iKlsR hm... that's true

2:47 AM
@iKlsR That is why I said small.....

^^
small edits = fixing fireflies, better resolution, etc.

It think we need to appoint judges maybe you @iKlsR.

We could probably lock the posts and use something like strawpoll for votes.

@gandalf3 And little thing one didn't notice.
@iKlsR ?

@GiantCowFilms Isn't it run by votes?

2:48 AM
@iKlsR strawpoll?

But SE's thing is voting..

I like voting.

@gandalf3 This is why it's tricky, you vote for a dog and op edits it to a cat the next day.

That's not a small edit

2:49 AM
What defines a small edit?

Then you retract your vote?

@gandalf3 Yeah, once it's edited the vote can be retracted.

Sounds fine then..
Ah well, I think it's fine

It's in your hands now.
iKlsR washes his hands with holy water

@iKlsR Suzanne water? ;)

2:51 AM
dries them in @gandalf3's beard

@iKlsR Hey!
We're all nice people right? It should be fine..
I think I'm over thinking this..
Every one can just be friendly and nice and the world can be at peace. :)

Yes.. we are assuming cheating and such.... Can't we have faith in our community... Oh, I'm in it, never mind. :P
@iKlsR Tweaking

3:21 AM
Idea hatched! - Begging to work...

1 hour later…
4:38 AM
@GiantCowFilms I would purpose removing the restriction for "Blender only, non commercial add-ons are allowed" There are some great addons on the blender market. There is no way to police, if in fact someone did use a paid addon. Further I see no benefit to limiting the contest to just the "core" blender. If Greg Zaal enters are you suggesting that he should not be allowed to use gaffer?

1 hour later…
5:43 AM
@David If you wrote the add-on, you can use it. The reason is it can give people and advantage, not everyone can dish out extra money. Be keeping it simple and saying no commercial add-ons it keeps it fair among rule abiding blender users. Not all of the rules are enforceable, but I choose to ignore the cheaters, if there are any, since it is a battle I don't feel I can win.

12 hours later…
5:42 PM
@someonewithpc What do you think of the changes

Looks good
