He seems to have missed that finding out if a question that looks like basic homework is in fact homework changes the character of the answer; a candid response relating to the source of the underlying problem would assist in getting a helpful answer (and directly asking about that in comments would likely have had a more fruitful outcome for all that it might be less comforting than running to twitter).

At the same time, if you're posting a problem is of the sort that would be set as an exercise for undergrads, you probably haven't done the search and research you're supposed to do before posting.

I was saying "there's a simple answer, but if this is homework I'm not flat out doing your homework for you". He also could have given better context there -- I did offer a very useful outline of a method not long after, in spite of him offering no useful clarification in response to the question about homework but he doesn't show that.

Giving people the benefit of the doubt cuts both ways there; he didn't give any and misrepresents how much help he got.

If he'd been more responsive that outline may have been turned into a full answer.

Even if he'd responded "yes, it is actually homework" he would had some suggestions more quickly

As it was, Mark clarified my suggestion into a complete description of the solution in comments.

If he needed that for a work problem ... i.e. if he was getting statistical consulting that his company should have been paying for, for free (and making himself look good on the expertise of others to boot) -- he could definitely have shown more interest in holding up his end of the bargain, and so help himself in getting to a solution he could use.

But since he's not here to defend his choices, I'll stop at that.

@Glen_b I had the sense the twitterer was not the OP, even though they made it sound like they were. Regardless, that tweet was -- I'm searching for a strong word meaning "the very opposite of classy."

Having said that, I think we all have something to learn here (especially me). One is that many people get the wrong impression of CV because they do not read carefully or completely. We ought to take heed of that and think of some ways--within the 500-character limitations of comments and the limitations of our own time--to sound more overtly friendly (without appearing forced or fake about it).
