I think there can be at least three good reasons for not explaining downvotes. 1. Someone else has already explained what's wrong. 2. Spam or offensive posts that don't deserve the courtesy of any reply. 3. If the OP has a history of bearing grudges, ad hominem replies, revenge downvoting, etc. I can recall several downvotes that were detectably from someone I've often disagreed with (a person no longer active here).

My bafflement at the many questions in the unbalanced-classes tag, and specifically in the oversampling tag has gotten the better of me, and in my quest for enlightenment, I humbly ask the wise: Are unbalanced datasets problematic, and (how) does oversampling (purport to) help?

I'm looking forward to investing some of the rep I'm increasingly uncomfortable at being showered with in rewarding the many helpful answers that will show the errors of my ways, so that the young shall be led along the path of wisdom.
