I have a small web-project. I want to daily backup the database. Ideally I'd use a master-slave architecture but the budget is not there. So I need to stick to mysqldump. What would the estimated time to backup a database with mysqldump if the database would never contain more than 1.000.000 records with all tables combined?

15 seconds? 15 minutes? 15 hours? Who knows (owls, I guess). May be you could try on your hardware, with your data, and see?

Never mind. I was asking the question because I was told that when you back-up your database using mysqldump your database is inaccessible while the backup is taking place
hence why I wanted to know for how long my database would be inaccessible
but now I found out that when you use InnoDB with `--single-transaction` and `--lock-tables=false` you can backup/dump your database reliable and consistent without it being down,

@O'Niel For future reference, this is the dba chat-room. It is not the forum for asking questions - this is for meta-chat about the questions themselves, other issues of possible/potential interest to dbas, other ICT issues and then there's the whole slew (vast majority?) of stuff/topics/complete-and-utter-rubbish that's exchanged here on a regular basis.
Recently, we've had many informative threads on vaccinations, the Olympics, tennis, molecular biology and human rights as well as the perennial favourite JEAGL(™). Scroll up a few (hundred) pages to find out if all of this fascinating material is your gig and, if so, come on down!!!
@ypercubeᵀᴹ Hmmm... interesting that somebody thought it worth reporting? What was it about? More importantly, does it still apply?

just a general FYI folks; while this isn't a particularly big problem on our site, referring to it as a "forum" gives folks the wrong idea about how we operate. Refer to dba.se as as "community" instead of a "forum".

Q: Sunsetting Jobs & Developer Story

Puneet MulchandaniTL;DR – On March 31, 2022, we will discontinue Stack Overflow Jobs and Developer Story. This includes all job listings, saved searches, applications, messages, recommended job matches, job ads, developer story, saved resumes, and the salary calculator. I had missed that news

@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW nah, it was about a timezone having wrong value: postgresql.org/docs/7.2/timezones.html

Morning
Good Morning Paul
@PaulWhite I hadn't missed that feature when it was introduced.

@JohnK.N. Yeah it's no loss

8:44 AM
Total of 19 Omicron cases inside NZ now (not confined to border quarantine)

Wow. So actually next to none.
@PaulWhite we had 39'800 cases on Friday alone.

@JohnK.N. Yes but we had had precisely zero before yesterday. A little Delta still, but no Omicron.

Omicron shouldn't be that bad (they said). Makes you immune (they said).
Better to have Omicron than Delta (they said)

9:01 AM
Yeah not looking forward to it
Could well be a tough few months

@JohnK.N. the details are killing (;)
I mean Omicron is likely less bad (on average) than Delta regarding effects on the body and likelihood of leading to hospitalization and death.
But far more bad is spreading speed and efficiency.
So in a country like NZ with very few cases so far, even a small number of omicron infections can lead to a big surge on cases
Better to not have any version that Omicron or Delta ;)

@JohnK.N. We're down to about 11! Not gloating or being happy or anything - but it shows that Omicron has a sharp spike (and not too serious for those vaccinated/boosted) and then fades. That may change with new/other variants?

Jan 11 at 12:03, by Paul White
I heard yesterday that the medical definition of "mild" is where supplemental oxygen isn't needed.
Not quite the definition I'd use!
@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW 11 Omicron cases? Or 11,000?

About the job thing - I'm a bit confused (wouldn't be the first time! :-) ) - surely that was (apart from straight ads) one of the few areas where dba.se (or all sites) could monetise the users... er... us?
Re cases - 11k!

9:16 AM
@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW Jobs was an SO-only thing.

11k/day is 1% of the country is infected in 5 days!

Well I hope we don't get to that sort of number, but I guess we'll see

Yes, but many/most of us here would also look over at SO from time to time! Still begs the question as to where the money is coming from?

Teams
and a bit from advertising I suppose
AFAIK they don't publish detailed financial statements though

I don't understand it myself - I wore masks, I washed my hands (my mother is elderly), but I never became infected. Did those who became infected just completely ignore restrictions?
Neither did my fiancée?

9:21 AM
I imagine luck plays a part. Along with whether you are required to frequently associate with others inside.
e.g. at work

Maybe I have become infected and didn't know it? The best man at my sister's wedding was tested (in hospital for an unrelated issue) and was positive and didn't have a clue!

Also possible yeah

@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW so you went to a wedding. how many people? was there a party afterwards?

I did have to take public transport - anything filthier, I can't imagine. Full of scumbags not wearing masks. Lost patience one time and said I'd give a mask to a woman who didn't have one. The language out of her would have made a trucker blush. I shouted back at her. The staff had the nerve to talk to me - I said "If I came in here smoking, you'd tell me to stop or throw me out soon enough..."
Wedding was long before Covid!
Unrelated temporally!

@JohnK.N. I must admit I had no idea the numbers were so high in Switzerland.

9:27 AM
Puzzled also by Irish numbers - we're one of the best for vaccination!

But then I have an image of Switzerland based on The Sound of Music and Heidi
@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW Isn't it the case that vaccines aren't v effective against transmission of Omicron?

That's like basing your knowledge of Oz on the film "Walkabout" with Jennifer Agutter - sitll have (ahem...) flashbacks to that one...
It appears, at least to me, that many/most of the infections are among the young/lesser vaccinated cohorts?

@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW Crocodile Dundee

@JohnK.N. Pretty accurate. Also see Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

9:30 AM
Yes, indeed, and Ireland is just like what happens in "The Quiet Man"!

Switzerland is more like Wall Street with Michael Douglas, except all the important bits are redacted and blacked out.

@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW Father Ted for me.
@JohnK.N. So it's not all green fields, lakes, mountains, cows, watches, and chocolate?

@PaulWhite Yes, we are doing out best to reach top of the chart.

Oh and yodelling.

@PaulWhite Yeah, but that wasn't Heidi

9:34 AM
I saw a recent documentary about Ronald Regan's visit to Ireland in the 1980's and a man on a donkey went into a pub and he had a pint of Guinness and the donkey had beer in a saucer - I've been to many bars in Ireland in my lifetime and I've never seen a man on a donkey being served!

@JohnK.N. Wasn't it? I don't remember it that well. Long time ago.
You'll be telling me next England isn't like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrells

Heidi was goats and mountains and Peter and the Alp Ohi and Frankfurt and possibly cheese and goat milk.

@JohnK.N. Oh yeah so it was!!!
Ha ha

And the southern states of the US aren't like "Deliverance"?

Zorro I think
Might be way off with that one

9:37 AM
@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW "Squeal like a pig"

Or "Southern Comfort" - always did like that film - it's the Francophile/Francophone in me!

@PaulWhite That would be the Southern bit outside the U.S. of A.

@JohnK.N. "Squeal like a pig, boy!"!
Don't you know your classics?

@JohnK.N. Ah a bit too south then. How about Interview with the Vampire?

Zorro was pre-statehood California?

9:38 AM
Does New Orleans count as Southern?
@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW Too far west then

N'Olins is deffo south!

That'll do me then

I do like Antonio Banderas - he's so convincing as a rep. of US values and culture!

@Vérace-getVACCINATEDNOW my bad
> The film takes place in San Mateo County, California and was shot in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, with **second-unit photography in Wellington, New Zealand.**[2] (Wikipedia)

Goodness
I did not know that
So it was at least primarily shot in Mexico

9:44 AM
> In The Curse of Capistrano, Señor Zorro became an outlaw in the pueblo of Los Angeles in California "to avenge the helpless, to punish cruel politicians, ...
the story is set in California, during the Spanish era

France = The Three Musketeers

Britain - Oliver Twist?

Battle of Britain
But also James Bond films

France = La Boum
(w/ Sophie Marceau when she was really young, before she became Bond girl/baddy)
England = Dad's Army

Mary Poppins!

9:51 AM
The Vicar of Dibley

I thought we were just doing films
Unless there's a VoD film?
Anyway there's far too many for England
Must be v confusing for their national identity

@PaulWhite oh ok
Trainspotting

Oh crikey yeah
Greece = Troy

No, much more modern, Alexandria!
Or Smyrna!
Read a (couple of) book(s) about it - a real tragedy!

Jason and the Argonauts!

9:59 AM
Zorba The Greek

Or Alexander himself - reputed to be an Albanian dwarf by some!:-0

Oh Troy is no good, there were a lot of Greeks but they were headed to Turkey

What is now Turkey was Greek for many millenia!

Roman too, probably, but I thought we were looking for definitive modern-era films
Highlighting exactly how life is in those countries today

Anthony Quinn (Alexis Zorba) had a broken foot during filming, and thus couldn't perform the dance on the beach as scripted, which called for much leaping around. The dance is called "syrtaki", and contains elements from various traditional Greek dances. It was created especially for this movie.

10:02 AM
All I really know about Greece is they like olives and hate crockery
Scotland = Highlander
Or maybe Braveheart

@PaulWhite They aren't allowed to break crockery any more. Instead they throw tissues around.

Much safer, I'm sure

10:27 AM
@JohnK.N. there is no law against it ;)

In 1969, the military dictatorship of Georgios Papadopoulos, that had suspended democracy and ruled Greece autocratically from 1967 to 1974, banned plate smashing[citation needed]. Nowadays specially-produced plaster plates are used. Another modern variation on the custom is for diners at small Greek restaurants or tavernas to buy trays of flowers that they can throw at singers and each other
In Crete where my dad used to go for holidays, they threw paper tissues around.

I can't imagine throwing flowers is anything like as much fun

@ypercubeᵀᴹ so that law was removed again?

well the quote does say [citation needed]

@JohnK.N. not 100% sure, I have to search more.
the custom started in the 30s and peaked in the 60s-80s after some popular movies made it more known
Yeah, wikipedia doesn't have all the the info.
there was a law/decree during the dictatorship but - due to people not obliging - also an adjustment that allowed smashing plates if other customers didn't object.
and the custom was popular even until the 80s but declining.
and you are right, it was replaced with throwing flowers
If anyone interested, you can still buy plates for smashing: piata-gia-spasimo.gr
delivers all over theworld ;)

Anyone have a good source for generating data that is biased? Like I have a histogram of birth years that is anonymized from a hospital's data. Now I want to generate a set of 50k patients, and I want the distribution of birth years to be roughly similar. i.e. if 5% of their patients were born in 1964, and 4% in 1965, but only 1% in 1966, I want that to be reflected in the birth dates I apply to the patients I create.
I would be doing this in T-SQL. I was thinking I can generate a random number for each patient, but then I would have to see which percentile it falls into in the histogram and then assign it that year? Wasn't sure there was an example of that already somewhere.
I guess I can just add a start and end number column for each birth year and then join where the random number falls in the range.
